On Monday, January 19, 2015, 14-year-old John Smith had spent the night with two friends,- Josh Rieger & Josh Sander – after winning a close basketball game the night before. John scored the winning shot. Joyce had spoken to John and was prepared to go pick him up when she got a chilling phone call minutes later from friend Cindy saying, “There’s been an accident.” John had fallen through the ice on Lake Saint Louise. First responders had pulled him out but “he didn’t have a heartbeat.” Stunned, after calling husband Brian & her sister, Joyce raced to the hospital praying all the way. Joyce burst into the ER as doctors feverishly worked to bring life back to John’s lifeless body. Sensing little hope, Dr. Stutterer finally told her, “You can go up and talk to your son.” “In that moment I knew I had to get desperate with my Lord. I had to get a hold of God and get a hold of him fast,” she says. Remembering a Beth Moore Bible study, she knew that the Holy Spirit had raised Christ Jesus from the dead. That same power was available to us. “All of a sudden, everyone and everything in that room faded away and it was just me and John and God. With a voice I thought was quiet, but that actually bellowed through the room, down the hallway, …. I declared, ‘I believe in a God who can do miracles! Holy Spirit, I need you right now to come and breathe life back into my son!” She closed her eyes and wept, and at that instant, she heard the sound of a miracle. John’s heart monitor sprang back to life. John’s recovery was slow but sure. Doctors expected and wanted to prepare the family that massive brain damage would affect him, but every test showed remarkable healing. His recovery defied every medical & scientific expectation, and 16 days later he walked out of the hospital under his own power, completely healed.
POWER OF PRAYER
Joyce knows that prayer really does work. As John lay in the hospital she marveled at how the Lord had brought John into her and Brian’s life unexpectedly when most parents were entering the empty nest stage. Looking back she remembered that at 17 years old she fell in love with a man six years older and a divorced father of two. Headstrong, she didn’t listen to her parents and became pregnant after high-school graduation. She was happy until Charlie told her to get rid of it. She hid her pregnancy, wearing baggy clothes, etc, and turned down a music scholarship for college thinking she would get married. Charlie never changed so she agreed to give the baby up for adoption. She never told her parents. He took her to a hospital where the doctor induced labor. “I gave birth to a baby boy with a round, chubby face, huge blue eyes, and a light covering of blond hair on his head,” she says. She adored him. On the third day she awoke and her baby boy was gone, taken away. “I begged for death to take me, as I sobbed into my pillow,” Joyce says. It was four days later her stunned parents found out she had given birth and had not told them. She did stay with Charlie and a subsequent pregnancy lead them to marry. During the hard years of this marriage Joyce turned to God again in her life. He answered her prayer and she didn’t miscarry her son Tom. She went back to church but eventually divorced Charlie.
A single mom with two boys, she met Brian who loved her boys and they married. Brian, a videographer, had a heart for missions and went on several trips . His heart for the children lead them to seek to adopt a child. In February 2000 they adopted a little five-and-a-half-month old baby boy from Guatemala they named John when she was 49 & Brian 46 years old! So much joy! Strangely Joyce never told Brian about giving up her first son for adoption. Never sure how he would take it. But one day when John was three years old, as she did devotions God spoke to her heart – I want you to find your son. She went to the computer. Miraculously, He led her step-by-step and within 10 days she had found and spoke with her son. Less than two weeks later she says, “I met my sweet son Joe for the second time in my life. And he was everything I hoped and prayed he would be.” Brian had proved to be so welcoming in hearing of her oldest son.
TOTAL RESTORATION
Joyce continues to marvel at the goodness and grace of God. He totally restored her oldest son and family to her. John is doing remarkably well, is totally restored, a good student with a 3.5 gpa and is very articulate. If we have just a little bit of faith, He will do wonders. She says it could be that God healed John over two weeks so that man would exhaust all his efforts. God restores hope. People want to see a God who cares and is above all things. She thanks God for the role of adoption in her life, restoring Joe to her and bringing them John. He cares for the hopeless and the lost, and adopts us into His family. Joyce just wants people to know that God does the impossible, she says. Their story is slated to be made into a movie by Devon Franklin and 20th Century Fox.

LMFAO. Just to clarify, that guy was an albularyo (from spanish herbolario, “herbalist”). They’re not really the ones who gave Siquijor its reputation. Honestly most of it is just sleight of hand. Don’t feel bad at laughing.
The original “witches” of Siquijor were actually shamans, called babaylan, who escaped Spanish prosecution. And they were almost always women or homosexual men. As shamans, they were the religious leaders of the villages. They didn’t need theatrics and magic tricks. Their main job was interceding. Talking to the spirit world for advice or healing or cursing enemies. Hence why it’s mostly women and gay men because they were believed to have female spirits who had a stronger connection to the spirit world (giving birth and all that).
This also meant that when the Spanish arrived and introduced Christianity they were the first to go. They were reduced to being “healers” (usually doing things like therapeutic massage or hilot, setting bones, or midwifery), while Catholic priests took over their religious roles. A few babaylan attempted to lead revolts against the Spanish because of this, but all of them failed. As a result, almost none of the traditions survived. Modern albularyo are a far cry from the babaylan.

Gary Gygax was a lot nicer than I would have been. When asked about that kid’s suicide, as soon as the Mom said she had never heard of the game before seeing it in his notebooks, my immediate thought was maybe not paying enough attention to know he plays D&D had something to do with why he was suicidal. Next thought, “Wait, he never had any previous psychological problems? He didn’t know how to separate a fantasy game world from real life… I’d say that’s a sign of a psychological problem. Again, the fact the parents didn’t pay attention enough to notice something was wrong has far more to do with the suicide than a silly game we like to play.”
The idea that because 12 people who committed suicide also shared a hobby, therefore the hobby must be the root cause, is beyond ridiculous. What about everybody else who committed suicide and don’t play, and what about the other 2,999,988 people who play D&D who haven’t killed themselves? …”

The Game is Time Consuming and Can Lead to Idolatry & Addiction..
…if you start getting addicted to Dungeons & Dragons and it becomes, or begins to become, an idol, you need to stop playing it.
There are no two ways around it; idols are devastating to your faith. If you have spent any time reading the Old Testament, you’ll see Israel falling into that trap multiple times. Now I know their idols were wooden, stone, or metal dolls or statues, but the sentiment is the same: Don’t put other things before God. So stay in prayer and if you see yourself slipping with God and giving time to the game that should be dedicated to Him, drop it like it’s hot!
So if the game consumes time and isn’t beneficial in any way, why waste time playing it? I mean, Philippians 4:8 says, “Fi..”…
So when introducing D&D to a younger audience, the parent or guardian should take special care to ensure it isn’t more than a game to them. Monitor them closely or wait until you are sure they have matured enough to be able to make the distinction. This is advice I have had to follow myself. I have wanted to sit down with my son, who loves fantasy games and movies, but I have had to cut him off of some video games due to him having genuine fear from the characters on the game in the real world. (We’re talking cartoony games, too. I don’t let him play Resident Evil or anything gruesome.) Some games he makes the distinction with easily, others he’ll have to wait until he is older to play. I’m playing it safe with D&D and starting him later, since you engage more in the world in some ways than with video games.
Dungeons and Dragons Leads People into the Occult
There have been a number of controversies surrounding D&D, the most prominent of which was popularized by William Schnoebelen. He was a Wiccan Priest before becoming a Satanic Priest who eventually dedicated his life to the Lord. Schnoebelen published his first article with Chick Publications titled, Straight Talk on Dungeons and Dragons, and a subsequent article, Should a Christian Play Dungeons & Dragons? (Coincidence? Nah, it’s a good to-the-point title.) I could go point-for-point with you and explain where I agree and disagree from the standpoint of a player, but most of the points he makes are covered in this article, so I will save the word count here…
…Again, the destructive nature lies in the person, not the game, and I agree someone with those tendencies should not play Dungeons & Dragons. And if you do play D&D, and get into a game with someone who wants to make the game about things that make you uncomfortable spiritually, you should politely walk away and decline to play with them…
The Creator of Dungeons & Dragons Was A Christian
gygax-xmas-sYou read that right. Gary Gygax, the creator of D&D, was a professing Christian at the time he created the game. This isn’t necessarily a little-known fact, but to some it is news. He didn’t make that well-known in his life in what he described as an effort to protect the name of Christianity from the controversy that surrounded his creation.
Now, there are Christians at all stages of their walk with Christ, and as I’ve highlighted in this article, no two walks are the same. But Gygax was mature enough and firm enough in his faith to stand by his convictions. I thought the cast at the University of Minnesota-Morris theater group did a superb job “performance” wise. They are one very talented group (e.g. singing and acting)!
During one of the scenes when the student was going to tell his dad the “bad” news that he ‘ll be expelled or something. He was seen as a “failure” and “embarassment” to his dad, which he would get physically abused. Unfortunately, he would commit suicide. This brought up my indirect experience in high school when 3 classmates from my class were killed in different ways (one commited suicide too with a gun). This also brought me to one of the scenes from an old school movie called “Dead Poets Society”..

On Saturday, September 15th 2017-I was just exiting of Highway 280 going to University Avenue (towards Minneapolis to visit a friend) from I-94 (St. Paul side). I saw one of those “homeless guys with signs” again, which I was prepared. Earlier, I got bag of bottle water read with invitation “tickets” for a free meal at Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities‘ homeless shelters, which anyone can print online…
..this would be the first person to “hand this ticket” too…
I ran quickly to my trunk as there was a red light and handed to this guy saying “God bless you” as the green light came on. I didn’t have time to chat, but I quickly prayed for him again as I might’ve drove by him again (can’t tell with the pic) across the bridge (pic above) when I was going back to St. Paul.
