Newsies: the real story | Calling Extra callingextra.com

“..The major differences between the movie and the acutal events have much to do with the basis of Hollywood movie-making and I do not fault the screenwriters or producers in their modification.

Below are a few false portrayals of the history and some clarification:

1. Jack Kelly was not the leader of the strike – and falsely, as other websites and books report who relate the real history of the newsboys strike, Kid Blink wasn’t either. There was a “Jack” Sullivan and he is mentioned in one newspaper as someone who spoke before the crowd and ignited the newsies to strike. But reporting of him stops there. Kid Blink, an Irish newsboy of fifteen who was blind in one eye, is peppered throughout the papers with rousing speeches. There’s no description that he wore an eye-patch, despite how he is portrayed in my novel as well as in Newsies…”

“…The true fact is that Newsies is based on the 1899 Newsboys’ Revolution, which was triggered by Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst’s decision to raise the prices of their papers, The Evening World and the New York Evening Journal (which the newsies had to buy in order to sell). The protest was semi-violent, brief, and openly mocked by the New York Times, which delighted in poking fun at the the newsies’ uncouth manner of speaking. It was also completely successful…”

“.. When Disney created the movie based on a true story of course certain facts would have to be left out as it is with any movie. How accurate is Newsies though? Were they able to keep to the basic premise and slip some clever details in or were they completely off the mark? First, let’s look at the characters themselves. Was there really a boy named Jack Kelly that led the newsies to strike along with his friend David Jacobs and went by Cowboy and wanted to move out to Sante Fe, New Mexico?

“..All the newsboys want is fair recompense for hard work – and if boys selling “papes” on street corners are too difficult to relate to in 2017, there are plenty of examples of exploitation among the youth, new citizens and the broader working class to inspire empathy in contemporary audiences. Think of employees suffering in major fast food chains, afraid to speak out in case they lose their livelihoods, or prisoners whose labour yields them as little as 17 cents an hour.

“..Charles Phillip Ingalls or “Pa” (1836-1902)

Charles had a wandering foot in all his various incarnations. In real life his family had long been farmers, moving several times while he was growing up in search of a better chance. Charles followed this same pattern with his own family after marrying Caroline Quiner, always in search of better financial opportunities, specifically a successful wheat farm. After many moves and attempts, with his family’s help Charles proved up his homestead, but due to health issues he retired from farming almost immediately afterward. Together Charles and Caroline built up one final home in De Smet, South Dakota. It’s known in Laura circles as the Third Street House and is where Charles and Caroline spent the rest of their respective lives…”

“..Laura was both a pioneer and an author. She helped her family create a homestead, worked as a seamstress and taught school before marrying Almanzo James Wilder. They set out to build their own farm. They had several failed attempts before finally making a last fresh start in Mansfield, Missouri. They were able to improve their farm slowly until they had a modestly successful farm of over 200 acres. Laura’s work sharing information to improve farm life led to a semi-regular career writing mostly magazine articles for the Missouri Ruralist. Her own ambitions and her daughter Rose’s prodding led her to write and publish a fictionalized account of her childhood in the Little House books. The process of creating the series and later answering her fan mail would be her big project for the rest of her life…”

In the mid-1950s, and again a decade later, the Army used motorized blowers atop a low-income housing high-rise, at schools and from the backs of station wagons to send a potentially dangerous compound into the already-hazy air in predominantly black areas of St. Louis…”

This piece analyzes a covert Manhattan Project spin-off organization referred to here as the Manhattan-Rochester Coalition, and an obscure aerosol study in St. Louis, Missouri, conducted under contract by the U.S. military from 1953–1954, and 1963–1965. The military-sponsored studies targeted a segregated, high-density urban area, where low-income persons of color predominantly resided. Examination of the Manhattan-Rochester Coalition and the St. Louis aerosol studies, reveal their connections to each other, and to a much larger military project that secretly tested humans, both alive and deceased, in an effort to understand the effects of weaponized radiation. Through this case study, the author explores how a large number of participants inside an organization will willingly participate in organizational acts that are harmful to others, and how large numbers of outsiders, who may or may not be victims of organizational activities, are unable to determine illegal or harmful activity by an organization. The author explains how ethical and observational lapses are engineered by the organization through several specific mechanisms, in an effort to disable critical analysis, and prevent both internal and external dissent of harmful organizational actions. Through studying the process of complex organizational deviance, we can develop public policies that protect the public’s right to know, and construct checks and methods to minimize the chance of covert projects that are contrary to societal norms.

The study came to light recently when Wellesley College researcher Susan Reverby found the archived but unpublished notes from the project as she was researching a similar study that was conducted between 1932 and 1972 in Tuskegee, Alabama. That study included nearly 400 poor African-American men with preexisting syphilis whose disease was allowed to progress without treatment. The Right To Refuse Service? Businesses and Discrimination Louis Marlin — February 4, 2014 business2community.com
“..Restaurants and stores qualify as “public accommodations” even if they’re a private business. As such, discrimination laws apply just as much on private property and to private businesses as they do in any public place.

Whether you post a sign or not, businesses never have the right to refuse or turn away customers because of their race, gender, age, nationality or religion. In addition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, several states have their own civil rights legislation designed to prevent discrimination. The Americans with Disabilities Act also prohibits discrimination in public accommodations, making it illegal to refuse service to individuals who are disabled or handicapped…

..there are some valid reasons for asking customers to leave. Individuals or groups who are causing trouble or being disruptive may be asked to leave, while restaurants or other businesses with a capacity limit can turn away customers to prevent this limit from being exceeded. Businesses can also refuse service to those who come in just before closing time or to those who are not making any purchases during their visit. There are various other examples – the key thing to note is that in each example, the decision to refuse service is not arbitrary or based upon an individual’s specific characteristics. Declining to serve someone has to be reasonable and justifiable. If customers are not properly dressed, you can ask that they leave, but if a person is wearing reasonable religious apparel and you dislike their beliefs, you can’t use that as an excuse to send them on their way. Magazines and television are often blamed for portraying an ideal body image that causes people to question their looks and lose confidence in themselves. But what about the role social media plays in moulding attitudes to the way we look?
“..”I’d always been tall, and I was a bit podgy too,” she says.

“No-one seemed to notice at primary school, but then in Year 7 everyone started pointing at me, noticing things, making me think I was ugly and not special.”

She became increasingly conscious of even tiny things such as the shape of her eyebrows and size of her forehead.

“I would have been subject to much more abuse if I’d had more friends on social media,” she says.

Kelsey describes the bullying she experienced between the ages of 11 and 16 as “absolutely awful”.

“It was all about my body and how I looked,” she says…

“You put forward your best self, and that can be a bit dangerous, because you naturally compare yourself to others,” she says….”

    The Media’s Effect On Women’s Body Image Posted on July 30, 2017, at 11:19 p.m. claudiap4f1030a7e Community Contributor buzzfeed.com
“..According to an article by the University of the West of England, over 10 million photographs are uploaded to Facebook every hour, approximately a quarter billion every day. Many of these photos being shared online involve some form of editing to enhance body appearance. The use of photo editing software in mass media advertisements has been prevalent for more than two decades but with the increased use of social media to share photos, more and more people are using photo-editing apps to alter their online appearance. For example, men might edit their photos to enhance their muscular physique in an effort to meet a socially idealized appearance. Today, a major concern is not the idealized appearances of models in mass media but rather the idealized appearances that have developed on social media between peer groups. It is thought to be because mass media pictures are perceived to be unrealistically achievable, whereas the appearance of a friend seems more realistic..”

    -Former Models

I gave up modeling for God By Post Staff Report April 24, 2013 | 4:00am nypost.com
“..“This is what Victoria’s Secret models do,” he said. “This is why they hired you. If you want to be like Gisele, this is what you have to do.”

That’s when it hit me. I was being paid to strip down and pose provocatively to titillate men. It wasn’t about modeling clothes anymore; I felt like a piece of meat.

The next day, I broke down and started sobbing. I was in my bedroom and dropped to my knees and started to pray.

“God, why did you have me win the Victoria’s Secret Angel competition if it was going to make me feel this way? I’m not honoring my husband. I just want answers!”

That was two years ago. Today, I’m living in Montana with my husband, enjoying the fresh air and volunteering with our church.

The old me would never have believed that I gave up my career for this quiet, country life. When I was a little girl growing up in Las Vegas, surrounded by billboards of half-dressed women, I dreamed of becoming a Victoria’s Secret Angel…

Over the next two years, New York really opened my eyes to the dark side of the modeling industry. One of my roommates was so bulimic she would involuntarily throw up when she ate. She would go to sleep crying every night and just look at herself in the mirror thinking that she was so fat. And she was so thin.

Deep Thought: Why people have “suicide” thoughts ?

Suicide Rates In America Are Up. By A Lot. – Newsy – YouTube

    Newsy
    Published on Apr 22, 2016
    “Transcript:
The number of suicides in the U.S. has been steadily rising since 1999, especially among women.
Between 1999 and 2014, the overall suicide rate climbed 24 percent, according to a study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. That’s a rate of 13 per 100,000 people.
While rates for males remained higher, suicide among females rose 45 percent.
And among young girls between the ages of 10-14, the rate rose 200 percent to 1.5 per 100,000 people, though the number of suicides within that group still remained comparatively low.
Women ages 45-64 had the second-largest increase: 63 percent to 9.8 per 100,000 people.
The CDC report doesn’t go into what could be behind the change, but it’s worth noting the greatest increases happened between 2006 and 2014 — during and after a major economic recession in the U.S.
Counselors with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline are available 24/7 to help those in crisis. The number is 1-800-273-TALK.”

Ever thought about “suicide”? Why ? What was going on in your life that might’ve gave you that thought. You might be actually “currently” thinking of it right now? I thought of it “a lot” growing-up when I was in my “pre-teen” years. Why? There were many reasons (e.g. bullied, family-life, life overall, etc..). Here are some other similar related stories..

Why we choose suicide | Mark Henick | TEDxToronto

Sal: I’ve talked to some “friends’ out of suicide before , which I’ve learned to just “listen” and be always “open” for God to use me. However, it wasn’t like this all the time. During high school, I had 3 classmates (one was a former close friend of mine) from my class that committed suicide. It was very difficult for me back then and somewhat still to this day as I’ve wrestled with some “thoughts” of regret (see story of forgiveness) .

    Finding Hope?

I found “hope” when I got to college. Suicide thoughts became a non-issue for me as I found a personal relationship with God. My friends would tell me the “good news” and I saw a lot of joy and hope in their life, which drew me to want that same “thing” they had. I would later also get a “bigger” perspective of life by listening to other people’s “more” challenging life issues. I started to realize what I was going through was “less challenging” compared to others. I learned about the blessings I really had along, which I never thought about it until I reflected how much more “grateful” and “thankful” to God more of what I have despite the “challenges” I’ve faced.

    Tiberias (Tveriah) – Israel – Chabad.org

“..Tiberias sits off the pebbly beaches of the Kinneret Sea.

Built along the shore of the Kinneret (Sea of Galilee), near seventeen natural hot springs, the northern Israeli city of Tiberias is known as the “City of Water.” It is considered one of the four “Holy Cities” in Israel.

Some 2,000 years ago, Tiberias was the center of Jewish study and the last seat of the Sanhedrin (Supreme Court of Jewish law). After enduring constant wars throughout the Middle Ages, the city was revived by an influx of kabbalists in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The city’s major attractions are the Kinneret, its natural hot springs and the graves of many historical luminaries…”

    Sea of Galilee in Israel

The Sea of Galilee is also known in the Bible as the Sea of Gennesaret, Sea of Tiberias, and Sea of Kinnereth. The Sea of Galilee isn’t really a “sea” per se – it is actually a freshwater lake fed by nearby mountains and springs, which combine at the head of the Jordan River to the north. The Jordan River then passes through the lake, which is about 13 miles long and 8 miles wide. The Sea of Galilee is 686 feet below sea level, making it the lowest freshwater lake in the world.

The landscape around the Sea of Galilee is unique. To the east and west, the ground rises steeply from the shore to fertile plateaus above. The black basalt boulders that cover the hillsides are typical of a landscape that was once volcanic. From the southern shore, you can see the twin peaks of Mount Canaan to the north, with the snow-covered Mount Hermon way beyond in the distance. From the west, you can see the small white houses of Ein Gev over on the eastern shore. Beyond Ein Gev rises a hill that was the site of the Hellenistic town, Hippos. From the east, you can see Magdala Bay on the northwestern shore, which lies just below biblical Tabgha and Capernaum.

The land surrounding the Sea of Galilee today appears rather quiet and barren. However, history tells us that this wasn’t the case during the time of Jesus. This was a hub for agriculture and trade.
