Just want to make it clear that I’m NO expert, but just sharing my personal tips based on my own experience putting a metal roof in my house. I did this for anyone that is considering putting one or is in the process of doing it. I want to share my feedback, so readers won’t make the same mistake as I did.
How to Climb a Metal Roof?
“There is no “one right” way as each house has a different roof pitch or height difference from ground level to top. The pic above is my set-up I created based on my project: putting up the last ridge and caulking. I used a rubber floor mat (black) to put under both my ladders to prevent any quick sliding movement to lessen the friction and also to protect the metal roof from any scratching of the metal ladder. As you can see, I put two ladders (see article that encouraged me on this): 1- regular ladder as a “back-up” in case the other falls. 2-Fold up ladder to go with the angle of the roof pitch, so you can climb it far enough to reach a certain part of the roof that you can “cling” your ropes too.
Mistake: Notice something “wrong” in the pic above? It’s a safety issue?
Learned Lesson: The fold-up ladder kept moving as I was trying to climb it, which I had a friend/housemate hold it every time I went up and down the roof. Well, this took too much of his time, so I decided to use bungy cords and tied it to prevent it from sliding or moving…
I also used a tow rope (yellow) and wrapped it around the sewer roof pipe to prevent the ladder from sliding down with my weight too…
Safety Harness
I HIGHLY recommend getting some type of harness kit=> FallTech 7595A Contractor Harness with Roofer’s Kit, Universal Fit because if your work boots fail, you at least have something as a back-up. I never fell during my climb, but I did use the rope a lot while climbing my 8/12 roof pitch.
Anchor
I did some searches to find the “best” anchor and found this one (FallTech 7431 Permanent Roof Anchor as the best, which you can use “long-term” (leave it underneath the ridge).
In order to get to the top, I had to find a part of the roof, where I can have a firm footing. I chose this area because of the “sewer pipe”, which was mid-way.
Caulking Sky Windows
First clear any debri (e.g. leaves) where you intend to put the caulk. I recommend applying this in “hot” weather, which it dries quicker in order to do the next step-> I then used a aluminum color tape along the top that somehow we missed the “flashing” when we got the kit.
Another note for ways to climb a metal roof is: I contacted the manufacturer (Midwest Manufacturing-via Menards) of my metal roof and they told me to use padded carpets, which I had some scraps from my basement carpet I laid earlier this year. I notice it would slide. I just left the carpet on top of my metal roof through rainy weather and it somehow stick to the metal roof. This is another way I found by accident to get it to stick!
