Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast” is a live-action re-telling of the studio’s animated classic which refashions the classic characters from the tale as old as time for a contemporary audience, staying true to the original music while updating the score with several new songs. “Beauty and the Beast” is the fantastic journey of Belle, a bright, beautiful and independent young woman who is taken prisoner by a beast in his castle. Despite her fears, she befriends the castle’s enchanted staff and learns to look beyond the Beast’s hideous exterior and realize the kind heart and soul of the true Prince within. The film stars: Emma Watson as Belle; Dan Stevens as the Beast; Luke Evans as Gaston, the handsome, but shallow villager who woos Belle; Oscar® winner Kevin Kline as Maurice, Belle’s eccentric, but lovable father; Josh Gad as Lefou, Gaston’s long-suffering aide-de-camp; Golden Globe® nominee Ewan McGregor as Lumiere, the candelabra; Oscar nominee Stanley Tucci as Maestro Cadenza, the harpsichord; Oscar nominee Ian McKellen as Cogsworth, the mantel clock; and two-time Academy Award® winner Emma Thompson as the teapot, Mrs. Potts.”

Why Some Parents Say Christians Should Watch Disney’s Beauty and the Beast 03-19-2017 www1.cbn.com
“..When Disney announced it would feature an “exclusively gay moment” in its new “Beauty and the Beast” remake, Christians everywhere vowed to boycott the movie. Despite the backlash, some Christians say parents should think twice about prohibiting their children from seeing the film.
CBN News caught up with folks who saw the movie opening weekend to find out what they think about the controversy. Click the video above to see what they said.
One of those parents is Sarah Wallace, a blogger for The Gospel Centered Mom, and mother of four. She says the movie gives parents the opportunity to teach their children how to interract with a world that loves sin.
“This is the culture God has appointed for us to raise our children in. We need to know how to live in it and interact with it,” she says. Instead of ignoring a culture that celebrates homosexualtiy, Wallace argues that Christians should send their children out into the world with strong knowledge of what the Bible says. ..”

Sal: I’ve seen various versions of this story, but somehow this particular movie inspired me to write about this one. One major reason was the character…
Hattie Morahan as Agathe /en.wikipedia.org
“..– a reclusive, old woman who lives in Villeneuve who, in reality, is a beautiful enchantress in disguise responsible for cursing the Prince. She watches and manipulates the events between Belle and the Prince, secretly acting as their guardian.

I saw her as the “guardian” angel and a particular symbol in the Bible of someone we “humans” need to watch for in life. Can’t let looks disguise you as the theme of this movie pretty much teaches..
What’s Up With Agathe In ‘Beauty And The Beast’? She’s A Complicated Character, To Say The Least By Olivia Truffaut-Wong bustle.com
“..Just a nameless and vindictive creature in the animated film, the Enchantress depicted in the new Beauty and the Beast, as played by Hattie Morahan, has a life beyond just cursing a spoiled Prince who refused to give her shelter. Named Agathe, the Enchantress appears in the prologue scene to curse the Beast, but she also pops up throughout the film as a villager. Agathe makes her debut in the film as the provincial town’s local old maid. She is an unmarried woman left begging on the streets, used by Gaston as a cautionary tale after Belle tells him she doesn’t want to go out with him. Pointing to Agathe, Gaston warns Belle that, in this town, an unmarried woman is destined to end up on the street…
Perphas the most significant change to the story in the live action Beauty and the Beast is the presence of Agathe at the end of the film. In the movie, the last rose petal has already fallen when Belle tells the Beast that she loves him. Belle didn’t break the curse at all, Agathe did. When the townspeople rush the castle, she enters with them, slipping in among the angry mob and making her way up to the West Wing of the castle. After witnessing Belle’s declaration, Agathe makes the conscious decision to lift the curse. In other words, she plays an active role in creating their Happily Ever After. Ultimately, the power to break the curse is in her hands and hers alone. She’s not just a random witch, she’s a woman with agency….”

Beauty and the Beast (2017 soundtrack) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia wikipedia.org
“…Condon originally planned on not only drawing inspiration from the original film, but he also planned to include most, if not all, of the songs composed by Alan Menken, Howard Ashman and Tim Rice from the Broadway musical, with the intention of making the film as a “straight-forward, live-action, large-budget movie musical”. Menken returned to score the film’s music, which features songs from the original film by him and Ashman, plus new material written by Menken and Rice. Menken said the film would not include songs that were written for the Broadway musical and instead, created four new songs. On January 19, 2017, it was confirmed by both Disney and Celine Dion, singer of the original title track, that she will perform one of the new original songs, “How Does a Moment Last Forever”, to play over the end titles. The film will also feature a new version of “Beauty and the Beast” by Ariana Grande and John Legend. Some songs contained Ashman’s unused lyrics that were cut from the animated version…”

What does the bible say about barren women who had to wait til late in life to have children? What is the lesson for us?
“Thank you for asking a question on http://www.thisisyourbible.com
In the Bible just 6 women are described specifically as ‘barren’.
By nature the women who were barren would have borne no children. Each had children by the direct intervention of God.
Barrenness in women and infertility in men are evils of this present world of sin and death brought about by Adam’s disobedience. Barrenness is not punishment on individuals, but like disease, accidents, famines, floods and earthquakes, just another evil that many have to endure.
The promise to Israel, had they kept the covenant made with God at Sinai, makes clear that God can and would intervene and ensure fertility of both people and livestock…

“..Children are a blessing from the Lord, and motherhood is a gift to mankind. In many cultures across the ages a woman’s value was based on her ability to reproduce, and her worth went up even more if she gave birth to a son. Not everyone can have children, though, so it has been a source of pain and suffering for many families through the years. Fortunately, a woman’s value today is not based solely on her fertility, but rather on the many other gifts and talents she might possess. The Scriptures do provide a source of hope and comfort to those who desire children, so here are my top 7 Bible verses about barren women…”

After Menopause, 52 Year Old Woman Delivers Her First Baby
“Published on Aug 11, 2013
Mrs Kate Fezigha, a 52-year-old woman, has given birth to her first baby, which came after 19 years of her marriage.
Mrs Kate Fezigha got married in 1994.
For years, the new mother, who is a midwife at the General Hospital, Sagbama in Bayelsa State, has supervised the delivery of many children but she never had a child.
She got frustrated after her attempt to adopt a child from a Bayelsa-based orphanage home was scuttled, as she was duped by the coordinator of the home.
Her menstrual flow ceased sometime last year and Fezigha concluded that menopause had set in and her chances of having a child gone.
Afterwards, she started experiencing regular dizziness and pains in some parts of her body and went for a test and the scan showed she was pregnant.
Nine months after, she gave birth to a baby girl named Prudent on June 3, 2013.
Fezigha said at the dedication of the child and thanksgiving service, in Yenagoa that the conception and birth of the “miracle baby” was “the Lord’s doing and it is indeed marvellous”.
She said the pressure on her during her 19-year wait was unbearable, especially as the children she assisted their mothers to be delivered had become parents.
She said: “I was worried that all the children I had taken delivery of while on duty in the hospital were now parents.
“I reflected and declared to myself that in spite of the fact that no child had died in my hand during birth as a midwife, why shouldn’t I have mine?
“But a voice kept telling me to redouble my effort and I shall be blessed.
“But the mysterious voice started reducing in my head as I was fast losing hope. I decided to adopt a baby from an orphanage and I was swindled.
“At this stage, I ignored the voice and handed the matter over to God. And now I am a happy mother.”
It emerged that it was a mysterious sickness that led her into going for a scan that revealed a fibroid or cyst.
Another scan revealed that she was pregnant.
“I had mixed feelings after the second scan. I even told my husband that it’s false pregnancy.
“When my husband asked me what that meant, I became his lecturer, telling him what it meant and saw the expectation of a pregnancy in his eyes.
“A few months later, I started seeing some changes in my body. Throughout this period, I could not go to work and had to be hospitalised twice before I was delivered of the baby.
“Those who knew me could not believe it and screamed when they saw my protruding stomach. They screamed and shouted praise the Lord.”
Basking in the euphoria of her new bundle of joy, Fezigha said that her family is full of praises to God.
“All the period of waiting was not easy, but I am comforted by the word of God. Women who are hoping to have children should put their trust in God.””

The case of the ‘world’s oldest mom’
Assistance in knowing how old is too old has now been provided by a Romanian woman named Adriana Iliescu. The 66-year-old unmarried professor and writer gave birth by emergency Caesarean section to a baby girl on Jan. 17 at the Giulesti Maternity Hospital in Bucharest. She is now the oldest woman in the world ever to give birth. Her doctor, when asked why he would use reproductive technology to permit a 66-year-old woman to become pregnant, said he helped her because that is what she wanted to do, and because he was impressed with her faith in God and with her “determination.”…

“..That first meeting was so amazing! Listening to all the women’s stories, their successes, and their struggles, it was nice to not feel so alone! I began to see that the Lord led me to this group. I began to understand that I was in need of spiritual healing. Karen was so dynamic and passionate about helping us through our struggles. The meeting left me emotionally exhausted, but with a sense of renewed faith and peace! Through Karen’s teaching, I learned that the Lord will fulfill His promises to me and that my past sins cannot separate me from His love—if I ask for His forgiveness. I learned that the Lord is never early and never late! He has a plan, which I can now see unfolding little by little. I now know that He will direct me to the path I should follow—whether IVF, adoption, IUI, or natural conception. WOW, what a weight that has been lifted off of me! Knowing that He is in control and I don’t have to be, I no longer feel pressure to do IVF or even know all the answers. I have put all my faith in Him, and I am giving Him my dreams! ..”

During worship service this morning at my local church, I shared some thoughts that I felt eager to share with the church body during “shares” after the worship music:
I shared that I’ve been interested in the recent news in Oroville, California…
… and been following up on it. I felt that their is a lot of symbolism with “man-made” dams that have been constructed around the world with our “spiritual” walk. The dams can be a symbolism of “lies” (e.g. “Your not good enough” , You are a loser”, etc..)that has been spoken to each of us in various ways that hinder us to receive more what God can do through us.
Before writing this, I was reminded of this “old-school” worship song..
I feel that we need to let God destroy that “spiritual dam” in our personal lives in order for His “Holy Spirit” to move in us mightier as His children.
What are you currently personally “struggling” with? Do you trust that God will get your through it? I then shared one of the songs that was sung during worship on “I’m NO longer a slave to fear..”, which I shared last year at church that we can substitute “fear” with whatever (e.g. sin, depression, alcohol, deception…
…drugs, an orphan, anger, cancer, PTSD, shame , jealousy, greed, stress, bullying, sexual impurity, lost, past, etc..) is keeping you “bondage”.. Keep repeating this to get it in your head until you have been release from these. This is part of meditation w/ God’s word (Bible verses on each one).
After my share, the guest speakers (Dennis & Zoe) from Pillager, MN shared about their recent trip to the Philippines. This family duo modeled how God can use us . They went to the Philippines to minister to the people there in different barangays/villages in various ways (e.g. healing, words of knowedledge, encouragement, etc..) This was such an encouragement for all of that we don’t have to depend on “ministers” or “church leaders” to do God’s work. We all can be used by Him to bring the taste of God’s kingdom on earth.
Hope and pray this will touch you and may God use each of us mightily in these days and please pray for the people of Oroville and the communities in the valley downstream of the #Orovillespillway or #Orovilledam. Feel free to share your thoughts, prayer requests, etc..

“…Among the veterans at Standing Rock Monday was Bill Means, a Vietnam vet who returned from fighting a bloody U.S. war of aggression overseas to take on the U.S. government at Wounded Knee. Bill Means is a founding member of the International Indian Treaty Council and co-founder of the American Indian Movement (AIM). Means is a key adviser to the Standing Rock Tribe on their resistance to the pipeline. I spoke with him shortly after he met with the Standing Rock leaders this week about future strategies for the tribe on its continuing resistance to the pipeline…
Bill Means: I feel a brotherhood to those veterans. I was there in Vietnam representing the United States, but one of the things that was beautiful about coming home from that terrible war was that our people still honored us, not because we fought for America but because we fought for the honor of our people. When I returned from Vietnam my cousin gave me an Indian name, my friend gave me a horse, and I was welcomed back to the community with open arms. I think that helped us in our healing from what they now call post traumatic stress. “

“..Before World War Two, Vietnam had been part of the French Empire. During the war, the country had been overrun by the Japanese. When the Japanese retreated, the people of Vietnam took the opportunity to establish their own government lead by Ho Chi Minh. However, after the end of the war, the Allies gave back South Vietnam to the French while the north was left in the hands of the non-communist Chinese. The Nationalist Chinese treated the North Vietnamese very badly and support for Ho Chi Minh grew. He had been removed from power at the end of the war. The Chinese pulled out of North Vietnam in 1946 and the party of Ho Chi Minh took over – the Viet Minh…
South Vietnam also had a population of 16 million. Its first proper leader was Ngo Dinh Diem who was a fanatical catholic. As communism hated religion, Diem hated all that communism stood for. This is why he got America’s support – he had a poor record on human rights but his rule was in the era of the “Domino Theory” and anybody who was anti-communist in the Far East was likely to receive American backing – regardless of their less than savoury background. Ngo ruled as a dictator along with his brother – Nhu. Their government was corrupt and brutal but it was also backed by America…”

Confronting the Ugly Truth about America’s Dirty War in Vietnam by William J. Astore 2-11-13 historynewsnetwork.org
“..“to kill Communists and to kill as many of them as possible. Stack ’em like cordwood. Victory was a high body-count … war a matter of arithmetic. The pressure [from the top] on unit commanders to produce enemy corpses was intense, and they in turn communicated it to their troops. This led to such practices as counting civilians as Viet Cong. ‘If it’s dead and Vietnamese, it’s VC,’ was a rule of thumb in the bush It is not surprising, therefore, that some men acquired a contempt for human life and a predilection for taking it.”..
..A line that has always stayed with me from Caputo’s memoir came from one of his NCOs, a Sergeant Colby, who in 1965 told then-Lieutenant Caputo that, “Before you leave here, sir, you’re going to learn that one of the most brutal things in the world is your average nineteen-year-old American boy.” Turse’s study plumbs the depths of such brutality, to include a racist subculture (dehumanizing the Vietnamese as “gooks” and “slopes”) within the U.S. military that facilitated it. Draft an American teenager, teach him to kill, send him to an utterly foreign land in which he can’t distinguish friend from foe, give him power over life and death against a dehumanized enemy, and reward him for generating a high body count in which “If it’s dead and Vietnamese, it’s VC,” and you have an ineluctable recipe for murderous violence…
It’s time our nation found the courage to face those twenty (or fifty) walls of Vietnamese dead. It’s time we faced them with the same sorrow and same regret we reserve for our own wall of dead. Only after we do so can our nation stop glorifying war. Only after we do so can our nation fully heal.
“How the U.S. Got Involved In Vietnam”
By Jeff Drake vietvet.org
“… By the end of 1943, small groups of Vietminh commandos were penetrating into Tonkin, led by Vo Nguyen Giap,(13) the future strategist of Dienbienphu and eventual Commander in Chief of the armies of North Vietnam. By 1945, the Vietminh controlled wide regions of the northernmost provinces and had engaged the full attention of most of the Japanese 21st Division.(14)
Being the only recognized force of some strength opposing the Japanese, the Vietminh received support from the American OSS (Office of Strategic Services). In return, the Vietminh helped rescue downed pilots and provided important intelligence information to OSS agents. A number of OSS officers voiced their admiration for the Vietminh and helped convince OSS leaders to back the Vietminh’s struggle for independence.(15) The Vietnamese fully expected American support due to Roosevelt’s Atlantic Charter, which emphasized self-determination for all peoples — not merely Europeans. In addition, the Vietnamese listened to broadcasts from the US Office of War Information, which often cited US support for colonial peoples struggling for their freedom. ..
As Japan faced defeat at the hands of the Allies, the Vietminh looked forward to Allied support in any future struggle against French colonialism. After all, the Vietminh had given valuable support to the Allies, and Ho expected support and recognition for his newly-established government, the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, in turn. A statement to this effect was even included in his government’s Declaration of Independence, established on September 2, 1945, which stated: “We are convinced that the Allied nations… will not refuse to acknowledge the independence of Viet Nam.”…
With the British and the Chinese finally gone, the Vietminh came under direct pressure from the French. By this time it was obvious that Ho Chi Minh would be receiving no aid from either the US or Russia. Indeed, from Ho’s perspective he had been abandoned by the international community and left alone to deal with France. Economic disaster, spurred by the Chinese occupational forces, and starvation due to Allied bombing of Northern damns, strengthened France’s position. On March 6th, 1946, Ho Chi Minh felt compelled to reach a compromise with the French. Essentially, Ho was forced to make the maximum concessions possible short of forfeiting his dominant position within the Vietnamese nationalist movement. It took everything Ho could do to quell the dissatisfaction of other various nationalist groups with this agreement.
[Note that during 1945 to 1946, Ho Chi Minh had written at least eight letters to Truman and the State Department, asking for America’s help in winning Vietnam’s independence from the French. Ho wrote that world peace was being endangered by French efforts to reconquer Indochina and he requested that the four powers (US, USSR, China and Great Britain) intervene in order to mediate a fair settlement and bring the Indochinese issue before the United Nations.
This was a remarkable repeat of history, for in 1919 following the First World War, Ho Chi Minh had appealed to US Secretary of State Robert Lansing, to gain America’s help in achieving basic civil liberties and an improvement in the living condition for the colonial subjects of French Indochina. This plea was also ignored and no admission was even made that the US had even received the letters.(19)] ..”
What Really Happened in Vietnam The North, the South, and the American Defeat Review Essay November/December 2012 Issue By Fredrik Logevall foreignaffairs.com
“…Victory never came. Despite the more than half a million U.S. soldiers President Lyndon Johnson sent to Vietnam, and the more than eight million tons of bombs the U.S. Air Force dropped on Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia from 1962 to 1973, Washington could not achieve its core objective: to preserve an independent, noncommunist South Vietnam for the indefinite future. In January 1973, U.S. and North Vietnamese negotiators signed a cease-fire agreement in Paris; two months later, the last U.S. ground troops left South Vietnam. Both the North and the South soon violated the cease-fire, and large-scale war resumed. On April 29, 1975, the South Vietnamese government collapsed, and Vietnam was reunified under a communist government based in Hanoi. By the time the fighting stopped, it had claimed the lives of three to four million Vietnamese, hundreds of thousands of Cambodians and Laotians, and more than 58,000 Americans. Now, Hanoi’s War, a pathbreaking new book by the historian Lien-Hang Nguyen, illuminates the decision-making behind the North’s relentless resistance, helping readers better understand why the struggle lasted as long as it did and why all those people died. ..”

The Vietnam War: 5 things you might not know By Katie McLaughlin, CNN Updated 3:47 PM ET, Mon August 25, 2014 cnn.com
“..The Vietnam War began in the decade before, but the conflict, and especially U.S. involvement, escalated in the 1960s. For the first time, Americans witnessed the horrors of war, played out on television screens in their living rooms.
This week’s episode of “The Sixties” explores the war and its impact on American culture, then and now. Here are five facts from the episode that may surprise those too young to remember the Vietnam War:..
“What Vietnam did to America via television was introduce us to a new kind of America,” said author Lawrence Wright. “One that was not pure, one that committed the same kinds of atrocities that are always committed in war, but we had never allowed ourselves to see them.”
Reporter Morley Safer recalled the shock of witnessing Marines burn down 150 houses on the outskirts of the village of Cam Ne. An officer told the newsman that he had been ordered to level the area. Three women were wounded in the attack, one baby was killed, and four people were taken prisoner.
Safer asked a soldier if he had regrets about leaving people homeless, and the soldier replied, “You can’t expect to do your job and feel pity for these people.”
Another soldier told Safer, “I think it’s sad in a way, but I don’t think there’s any other way you can get around it in this kind of a war.”
Americans back home were stunned when the CBS report about the Cam Ne village hit the news.
After the broadcast, Johnson reportedly called then-CBS president, Frank Stanton, and said, “Frank, this is your President, your boys just s–t on the flag of the United States.”..”

Facts, information and articles about The Vietnam War historynet.com
“..Vietnam War summary: Summary of the Vietnam War: The Vietnam War is the commonly used name for the Second Indochina War, 1954–1973. Usually, it refers to the period when the United States and other members of the SEATO (Southeast Asia Treaty Organization) joined the forces of the Republic of South Vietnam in contesting communist forces comprised of South Vietnamese guerrillas and regular-force units, generally known as Viet Cong (VC), and the North Vietnamese Army (NVA). The U.S. had the largest foreign military presence and basically directed the war from 1965 to 1968. For this reason, in Vietnam today it is known as the American War. It was a direct result of the First Indochina War (1946–1954) between France, which claimed Vietnam as a colony, and the communist forces then known as Viet Minh. In 1973 a “third” Vietnam war began—a continuation, actually—between North and South Vietnam but without significant U.S. involvement. It ended with communist victory in April 1975.
The Vietnam War was the longest in U.S. history, until the war in Afghanistan that began in 2002 and continues at this writing (2013). It was extremely divisive in the U.S., Europe, Australia and elsewhere. Because the U.S. failed to achieve a military victory and the Republic of South Vietnam was ultimately taken over by North Vietnam, the Vietnam experience became known as “the only war America ever lost.” It remains a very controversial topic that continues to affect political and military decisions today..”

There is a correct order to show your children the Star Wars movies October 24, 2014 theweek.com
“…Let’s say you grew up watching the Star Wars trilogy, then had children sometime after 1999, when George Lucas started releasing the prequels.
When your kids are old enough, what order should they watch the films in? The order they were released — Star Wars (A New Hope) (1977), The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983), then The Phantom Menace (1999), Attack of the Clones (2002), and Revenge of the Sith (2005)? Or the order the events happened in the Star Wars universe: Phantom Menace (I), Attack of the Clones (II), Revenge of the Sith (III), New Hope (IV), Empire Strikes Back (V), and Return of the Jedi (VI)?
Rod Hilton, a computer programmer in Colorado, has given this a lot of thought, and he probably has the best solution. His (correct) instinct is to start with New Hope (IV), because if you start with Phantom Menace (I) you lose the essential shock of learning Luke’s parentage in Empire Strikes Back. But he also wants to end on a high note — so, none of the prequels. Here’s Hilton’s “Machete Order,” named after his blog, Absolutely No Machete Juggling:
Next time you want to introduce someone to Star Wars for the first time, watch the films with them in this order: IV, V, II, III, VI…”

It’s Never Too Late for Redemption
“At the very end of The Return of the Jedi, just when it seems that all hope is lost, something incredible happens. Darth Vader, the longstanding antagonist of the series, sacrifices himself to save his son and defeat the emperor. Vader had believed he was too far gone to ever find redemption. He had done so many terrible things, betrayed so many people. How could he ever be forgiven?
Luke, on the other hand (no pun intended), never lost faith in Vader. In fact, he believed so strongly he was willing to pay the ultimate price for his forgiveness. There are many people like Vadar who look back on their mistakes and think it’s too late, but they are wrong. I doesn’t matter how far we’ve strayed or how mangled we’ve become, Jesus gave his life so that we could be forgiven (John 3:16). God doesn’t need to save you, He already has…”

Rogue One review: this is the first Star Wars movie to acknowledge the whole franchise is about war Updated by Todd VanDerWerff@tvoti Dec 16, 2016, 11:14am EST vox.com
It’s often incoherent and messy. But it’s also beautiful and has a strong central theme.
“..But if the film is politically relevant, it’s only accidentally so, not intentionally. I say that not just because Rogue One was completed long before Donald Trump’s election or even Brexit, but because Edwards uses a kind of scattershot approach to political content in his films — he’ll give you just enough of an idea of what he’s going for, but he’s uninterested in pushing any further than that.
An early shot in Rogue One features Stormtroopers patrolling the streets of a city rife with tension between various factions, rolling around in a tank. At various moments, it calls to mind the US occupation of Iraq and police militarization of American cities. But it’s not entirely clear whether Edwards has thought about what these similarities might mean in the larger tapestry of Rogue One beyond “Do you get this reference?” It’s political commentary as Family Guy joke…”

“..The sun also provides enough energy that can be stored for use long after the sun sets and even during extended cloudy periods. But making it available is much easier said than done. It would be cost prohibitive to make solar energy mainstream for major world consumption in the near future. The technology is pretty much ready for many business and consumer applications, but it would be way too expensive to replace the current energy infrastructure used for fossil fuel energy. Still, according to the European Photovoltaic Industry Association, solar power could provide energy for more than one billion people by 2020 and 26 percent of global energy needs by 2040…”

Pros & Cons of Wind Energy windustry.org
“In the U.S., the greatest source of human-caused greenhouse gas emissions is the power sector, at about 38%. The largest source of power is coal, which, even though it produces less than 40% of the power, produces over 70% of the power sector’s greenhouse gas emissions. (20% of the greenhouse gas emissions are from natural gas-fired power plants.) Although wind turbines have become familiar in much of the U.S., wind power still (2013) only accounts for about 4% of the power sector.
The potential for wind energy is immense, and experts suggest wind power can easily supply more than 20% of U.S. and world electricity. The advantages and disadvantages of wind energy are detailed here to help you decide what the future of wind should be in the United States.

This symbolic installation was taken down in 1986 during the Reagan presidency. As the industry grows, so does concern over the environmental impact.
“..Fabricating the panels requires caustic chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and hydrofluoric acid, and the process uses water as well as electricity, the production of which emits greenhouse gases. It also creates waste. These problems could undercut solar’s ability to fight climate change and reduce environmental toxics…

France Solar Roads Could Power 8% of Country
“Published on Feb 2, 2016
The French government has announced plans to install solar panels on 621 miles of road over the next five years as part of the “Positive Energy” initiative. The goal of the project is to supply electricity to 5 million people, or about 8 percent of the country. The “Wattway” photovoltaic solar panels that will be used in the project were jointly developed by the French road construction company Colas and the National Institute for Solar Energy and were unveiled last October. We look at the major step forward for green energy on the Lip News with Jo Ankier and Elliot Hill.
Solar Road Panels Offer Asphalt Alternative By Sören Harder .spiegel.de
“..The idea is as simple as it is ingenious. Wherever roads are laid, solar panels could go instead. They would generate electricity, which would in turn be fed into the grid. Thus, oil is conserved twice: Electric cars could be charged with the energy produced by the panels, and the panels would replace the use of asphalt, the production of which requires petroleum…
The Brusaws’ work was impressive enough that this spring, they are launching a pilot project, for which the state awarded them $750,000. In their hometown of Sandpoint, Idaho, near the Canadian border, the couple has built their first parking lot made from solar panels…
There’s just one catch: Currently the solar road panels cost about three times as much as conventional roads, the Brusaws say. But over time, they add, the technology could begin to actually turn a profit. It sounds almost too good to be true. “
First AMAZING Solar Roadway UNVEILED!
“Published on Oct 11, 2016
The words failure of epic proportion are thrown around a lot these days….. however Solar Roadways grand unveiling may have just raised the bar on what that actually means.
We were promised roads that would generate power, be computer controlled, modular, replaceable, with programmable lights that would function as road markings that would be visible during the day.
What was delivered was a ‘road’ that couldnt be driven
DIDNT GENERATE ANY POWER
had LED lights on that just cycled
LED that were not visible even when the STREET LIGHTS WERE STILL ON, let alone in full daylight!
and of course 75% of them died within a week of instillation.
You too can now watch the brilliance of the REALITY of solar freakin roadways live!
You would have thought such a failure to achieve anything would have dampened their bold claims…. but not at all, they are now claiming the road will recharge your electric car while you are actually driving……sigh…. and they STILL get wall to wall favorable media coverage!
Could Solar Panels Replace Concrete Or Asphalt Roads? Quora , Contributor Jun 5, 2014 @ 11:54 AM forbes.com
“Yes, they could. The basic engineering of Solar Roadways seems robust and fairly well thought through. Could they do so economically? It’s very difficult to see how…
Solar Roadways make them a lot more expensive — 10 to 40 times more expensive depending on assumptions — and in theory create the ability to avoid some costs and make some other costs more viable, but a lot of the additional value seems pretty flimsy. They will be unable to overcome this massive cost increase through generating electricity.
For example, they want to replace painting road markings — which would degrade the light hitting the solar panels — with LED road markings. Well, this just adds a lot of cost and heat, won’t necessarily be particularly visible during the day and will put LEDs and their wiring between the panels and the sunlight too. Ditto magically moving lane markings allowing shifts in traffic patterns will likewise be an expensive technical solution to some paint which needs to be restored every year or two and maybe some overhead signage…
So what’s the problem with snowplows? Well, they have heavy metal blades that scrape across the road. And the road in this case is a bumpy glass surface, because a slick surface would become a sheet of ice in the rain, so it needs to be textured. And the snowplow blade is going to be blasting across these bumps at 30-50 miles per hour scraping them off and shattering them. Oh, and leaving a lot of snow packed into the cracks between the bumps, degrading the effectiveness yet again. Salt, gravel and other substances will likely be required as well, which is fun when you have a bunch of glass panels with cracks between them allowing salty water in among the solar panels, LEDs, wires and heating coils…”

The bill would penalize utility-scale solar and wind because those producers are less able to respond quickly to fluctuating demand for power. Natural gas power plants can fire up quickly when millions of people turn on their air conditioners during a heat wave.

The Deepwater Horizon oil spill (also referred to as the BP oil spill, the BP oil disaster, the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, and the Macondo blowout) began on 20 April 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico on the BP-operated Macondo Prospect. Following the explosion and sinking of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig, a sea-floor oil gusher flowed for 87 days, until it was capped on 15 July 2010. Eleven people went missing and were never found and it is considered the largest accidental marine oil spill in the history of the petroleum industry, an estimated 8% to 31% larger in volume than the previously largest, the Ixtoc I oil spill. The US Government estimated the total discharge at 4.9 million barrels (210 million US gal; 780,000 m3). After several failed efforts to contain the flow, the well was declared sealed on 19 September 2010. Reports in early 2012 indicated the well site was still leaking.
A massive response ensued to protect beaches, wetlands and estuaries from the spreading oil utilizing skimmer ships, floating booms, controlled burns and 1.84 million US gallons (7,000 m3) of Corexit oil dispersant. Due to the months-long spill, along with adverse effects from the response and cleanup activities, extensive damage to marine and wildlife habitats and fishing and tourism industries was reported. In Louisiana, 4.6 million pounds of oily material was removed from the beaches in 2013, over double the amount collected in 2012. Oil cleanup crews worked four days a week on 55 miles of Louisiana shoreline throughout 2013. Oil continued to be found as far from the Macondo site as the waters off the Florida Panhandle and Tampa Bay, where scientists said the oil and dispersant mixture is embedded in the sand. In 2013 it was reported that dolphins and other marine life continued to die in record numbers with infant dolphins dying at six times the normal rate. One study released in 2014 reported that tuna and amberjack that were exposed to oil from the spill developed deformities of the heart and other organs that would be expected to be fatal or at least life-shortening and another study found that cardiotoxicity might have been widespread in animal life exposed to the spill.
Numerous investigations explored the causes of the explosion and record-setting spill. Notably, the U.S. government’s September 2011 report pointed to defective cement on the well, faulting mostly BP, but also rig operator Transocean and contractor Halliburton. Earlier in 2011, a White House commission likewise blamed BP and its partners for a series of cost-cutting decisions and an insufficient safety system, but also concluded that the spill resulted from “systemic” root causes and “absent significant reform in both industry practices and government policies, might well recur”.
In November 2012, BP and the United States Department of Justice settled federal criminal charges with BP pleading guilty to 11 counts of manslaughter, two misdemeanors, and a felony count of lying to Congress. BP also agreed to four years of government monitoring of its safety practices and ethics, and the Environmental Protection Agency announced that BP would be temporarily banned from new contracts with the US government. BP and the Department of Justice agreed to a record-setting $4.525 billion in fines and other payments. As of February 2013, criminal and civil settlements and payments to a trust fund had cost the company $42.2 billion.
In September 2014, a U.S. District Court judge ruled that BP was primarily responsible for the oil spill because of its gross negligence and reckless conduct.
In July 2015, BP agreed to pay $18.7 billion in fines, the largest corporate settlement in U.S. history.”

30 Years of Oil and Gas Pipeline Accidents, Mapped George Joseph @georgejoseph94 Nov 30, 2016 citylab.com
The sheer number of incidents involving America’s fossil fuel infrastructure suggests environmental concerns should go beyond Standing Rock.
The 1,172 mile Dakota Access Pipeline, stretching from North Dakota to Illinois, would carry 470,000 barrels of crude oil a day if completed. But its future is still uncertain. Last week, the Army Corps of Engineers announced plans to close the Standing Rock Sioux camp by Dec. 5, but later claimed it had “no plans for forcible removal” and “is seeking a peaceful and orderly transition to a safer location,” after public backlash. In recent weeks, police have used increasingly aggressive means to confront protesters, including water cannons, tear-gas grenades, and sound weapons. In response, thousands of veterans have pledged to travel to Standing Rock next week to serve as human shields for the protesters, who call themselves “water protectors.”
Regardless of what happens at Standing Rock, Zizi says he expects deadly pipeline accidents will continue to flare up nationwide. “I live in Richmond, California and experienced the 2012 Chevron refinery explosion,” says Zizi. “That was scary, living six blocks away and seeing the black smoke covering the sun. They said there’s nothing wrong with this, just stay in your house. But this is contaminating our land, our soil, our air, our water. Once things are contaminated, it is hard to go back.”..”
Federal data: As oil production soars, so do pipeline leaks By Tribune wire reportsContact Reporter May 22nd 2015 chicagotribune.com
“The oil pipeline leak that fouled a stretch of California coastline this week reflects a troubling trend in the nation’s infrastructure: As U.S. oil production has soared, so has the number of pipeline accidents.
Since 2009, the annual number of significant accidents on oil and petroleum pipelines has shot up by almost 60 percent, roughly matching the rise in U.S. crude oil production, according an analysis of federal data by The Associated Press.
Nearly two-thirds of the leaks during that time have been linked to corrosion or material, welding and equipment failures, problems often associated with older pipelines, although they also can occur in newer ones, too. Other leaks were blamed on natural disasters or human error, such as a backhoe striking a pipeline.
Industry officials and federal regulators say they have adequate means of gauging the safety of pipelines, but the aging infrastructure is a source of lingering concern for outside experts….
With new drilling techniques such as hydraulic fracturing, the U.S. is in a period of sustained growth in oil production. New frontiers, such as parts of North Dakota, Oklahoma, Texas and Pennsylvania, have lifted domestic output to near historic highs.
The federal pipeline safety agency recently issued guidance — though not a rule — that lays out steps pipeline operators should take to evaluate the risks of aging pipelines.
After previous pipeline spills, federal safety regulators have considered requiring greater use of valves that can automatically seal off breached lines. Also proposed are better leak-detection systems and an expanded definition of areas that are considered “high-consequence” during a pipeline break, such as heavily populated or environmentally sensitive locations….”

“…The Suncor oil refinery upwind of Denver that recently belched pumpkin-colored gas and dust into the sky, worrying residents and prompting highway closures, released far more sulfur dioxide than previously known — 75,600 pounds, 150 times beyond a 24-hour limit that triggers an investigation, according to a company letter obtained Friday.
Suncor spokeswoman Lisha Burnett told reporters shortly after the Oct. 14 event that no sulfur dioxide had been detected near the refinery, but company officials later acknowledged the sulfur dioxide release had exceeded the daily limit of 500 pounds. The company and state officials say the release did not pose any health risks…”

Largest Leak In State History: North Dakota Pipeline Leaks Crude Oil, 3mn Gallons of Fracking Fluid
“…Published on Jan 23, 2015
Nearly 3 million gallons of saltwater and an as yet unknown amount of crude oil have leaked from a northwest North Dakota pipeline into a creek that feeds into the Missouri River. Officials have called the leak the largest of its kind in state history.
The leak in the 4-inch saltwater collection line, owned by Summit Midstream Partners LP and operated by subsidiary Meadowlark Midstream Co., was discovered earlier this month and was reported to the state on January 7, according to Reuters.
Yet some of the brine made it to the Missouri River, the Williston Herald reported, and the state found “high readings” of contamination at the confluence of the Little Muddy and Missouri Rivers southeast of Williston, according to Karl Rockeman, the director of water quality at the Department of Health.
Williston sits in the middle of North Dakota’s oil boom, and the saltwater is said to be a byproduct of hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.
Weather Affects Oil Pipeline Spill Cleanup in North Dakota By james macpherson, associated press BISMARCK, N.D. — Dec 8, 2016, 5:32 PM ET abcnews.go.com
“..A company with a history of oil field-related spills in North Dakota and Montana is being hampered by winter weather in its cleanup of a “significant” pipeline break that leaked crude oil into a tributary of the Little Missouri River in western North Dakota, a regulator said Thursday.
Bill Suess, an environmental scientist with the North Dakota Health Department, said the Belle Fourche Pipeline Co. spill was discovered Monday by a landowner near Belfield. The cause of the leak is under investigation and the amount of the spill is unknown, in part because of recent blizzards and subzero temperatures throughout North Dakota, he said.
“Anytime you have cold temperatures, it’s going to hinder cleanup and the investigation,” Suess said.
He said the spill migrated about 2? miles from the spill site along Ash Coulee Creek, and it fouled an unknown amount of private and U.S. Forest Service land along the waterway. He said state and federal inspectors have been monitoring the spill and that it appeared to be contained. The creek was free-flowing when the spill occurred but has since frozen over.
The spill in the creek is about 20 miles upstream of the Little Missouri River. Suess said it did not appear that any of the oil reached the river and no drinking water sources were affected.

Oil Train Spills Hit Record Level in 2014 by Tony Dokoupil
News Jan 26 2015, 8:49 am ET nbcnews.com
“..American oil trains spilled crude oil more often in 2014 than in any year since the federal government began collecting data on such incidents in 1975, an NBC News analysis shows.
The record number of spills sparked a fireball in Virginia, polluted groundwater in Colorado, and destroyed a building in Pennsylvania, causing at least $5 million in damages and the loss of 57,000 gallons of crude oil.
By volume, that’s dramatically less crude than trains spilled in 2013, when major derailments in Alabama and North Dakota leached a record 1.4 million gallons — more than was lost in the prior 40 years combined. But by frequency of spills, 2014 set a new high with 141 “unintentional releases,” according to data from the federal Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA). By comparison, between 1975 and 2012, U.S. railroads averaged just 25 spills a year. ..”

“..According to EPA’s website the best way we can best avoid the environmental and economic effects of oil spills by preventing and containing them in the first place. For more than two decades, EPA’s Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasures, or SPCC program, has worked at several hundred thousand oil storage facilities to prevent the discharge of all kinds of oil into the waters of the United States. EPA’s approach to preventing oil spills combines planning and enforcement measures. To prevent oil spills, EPA requires owners or operators of certain oil storage facilities to prepare and implement SPCC Plans that detail the facility’s spill prevention and control measures. EPA also enforces the oil spill liability and penalty provisions under the Oil Pollution Act of 1990, which provide incentives to facility owners/operators to take the necessary steps to prevent oil spills. EPA also conducts on-site facility inspections to ensure that facilities take adequate measures to prevent an accidental discharge…”

Forget Ebola The Only Thing That Americans Have To Fear Is Republican Fear Mongering By Rmuse on Sun, Oct 26th, 2014 at 10:38 am politicususa.com
In America’s National Anthem, the last line in the refrain claims this country is the “land of the free and the home of the brave,” but it does not apply to a large segment of the population suffocated by irrational fear robbing them of their freedom. There are millions of brave Americans whose courage makes them truly free, but only because they have not played into the hands of cowardly Republicans who are terrified voters will notice their gross incompetence. No American is free when fear causes a change in their brain function and behavior, particularly when it induces cognitive paralysis, but that is precisely what is occurring in America. One often wonders why and when Americans became so terrified of so many innocuous things such as who someone loves, how they worship, where they came from, when a woman gives birth, the government, foreign religious wars, or an African virus; all things Republicans use to incite irrational fear and hatred for other Americans..”
