On Cinco de Mayo, newspapers across the country reported that Secretary of Labor W. Willard Wirtz wanted to recruit 20,000 high schoolers to replace the hundreds of thousands of Mexican agricultural workers who had labored in the United States under the so-called Bracero Program. Started in World War II, the program was an agreement between the American and Mexican governments that brought Mexican men to pick harvests across the U.S. It ended in 1964, after years of accusations by civil rights activists like Cesar Chavez that migrants suffered wage theft and terrible working and living conditions.

But farmers complained — in words that echo today’s headlines — that Mexican laborers did the jobs that Americans didn’t want to do, and that the end of the Bracero Program meant that crops would rot in the fields.

“They can do the work,” Wirtz said at a press conference in Washington, D.C., announcing the creation of the project, called A-TEAM — Athletes in Temporary Employment as Agricultural Manpower. “They are entitled to a chance at it.” Standing beside him to lend gravitas were future Baseball Hall of Famers Stan Musial and Warren Spahn and future Pro Football Hall of Famer Jim Brown.

Despite such skepticism, Wirtz’s scheme seemed to work at first: About 18,100 teenagers signed up to join the A-TEAM. But only about 3,300 of them ever got to pick crops.

Problems arose immediately for the A-TEAM nationwide. In California’s Salinas Valley, 200 teenagers from New Mexico, Kansas and Wyoming quit after just two weeks on the job. “We worked three days and all of us are broke,” the Associated Press quoted one teen as saying. Students elsewhere staged strikes. At the end, the A-TEAM was considered a giant failure and was never tried again.

But he says the experience also taught them empathy toward immigrant workers that Carter says the rest of the country should learn, especially during these times.
“There’s nothing you can say to us that [migrant laborers] are rapists or they’re lazy,” he says. “We know the work they do. And they do it all their lives, not just one summer for a couple of months. And they raise their families on it. Anyone ever talks bad on them, I always think, ‘Keep talking, buddy, because I know what the real deal is.’ ”

A village schoolteacher, he immersed himself in Confucian scholarship for the civil service exam, but he just kept failing.
“He fell into what I suppose was some kind of depressive fit and he had a vision,” says Jonathan Fenby, who has written a history of modern China.
“He imagined he’d gone up to the skies and there he had met a very tall man with a long beard and thick belt who had told him to come back to Earth and eradicate the demons on Earth.”
Some time later he was given a Chinese translation of the New Testament by a Christian missionary.
“He decided on reading that, that the man he had seen up in the sky was the Christian God, that he, Hong, was the brother of Jesus, and that the devils he had to exterminate on Earth were the Qing dynasty, which was then ruling China and of course was not Chinese.”..”
“..The Europeans brought Christianity which, for Hong, was a convenient alternative to the Confucian creed which had rejected him.
“Seeing that everyone in high heavens scolded him, Confucius escaped down to earth with the leader of the demons,” goes an account of Hong’s vision, set down in writing by a follower.
“The heavenly father then sent the angels to chase after Confucius, tie him up and bring him back to the heavenly father who was exceedingly angry and instructed the angels to whip him. There was plenty of whipping and Confucius asked for mercy repeatedly.”

Famine and unemployment made peasants vulnerable to utopian thinkers
For the most part, China’s emperors had not bothered much with religions. Buddhism had become very popular at a time of upheaval in the 6th Century, but it appealed mostly to people at the bottom of society.
Christianity was one of the novelties which had come in with the colonial powers. They used gunboats to open China to trade, and shattered the image of order and invincibility cultivated by the Qing emperors. Vernacular translations of the Bible helped loosen the grip of the Confucian elites.
The Europeans saw Hong’s claim to be the brother of Christ as heresy, but he was not preaching for their benefit. He accompanied his spiritual message with a political one – a vision of equality and shared land ownership. This appealed to poor farmers, who were suffering from a sense of hopelessness, according to Guo Baogang of Dalton State college.
“Peasants have a very miserable life in the middle of the 19th Century,” he says.
“There’s a lot of famines and unemployment, most peasants have no land. So they’re very vulnerable to the utopian thinkers prescribing a perfect society as a way to escape from the existing society.”..”

Hundreds of thousands of Hongkongers have taken to the streets to protest a controversial extradition bill that could send Hong Kong residents to mainland China to be tried in court. But its opponents fear that Hong Kong would be exposed to China’s flawed judicial system, which would lead to further erasure of the city’s judicial independence.
At first Lam was determined to move forward with the bill. But after a series of massive protests, she announced she would “indefinitely suspend” the bill. But protesters aren’t accepting the suspension, and have started demanding its complete withdrawal. They’ve also begun calling for Lam’s resignation.

Christians are playing an important role in Hong Kong’s ongoing protests, which aim to preserve the city’s freedoms and autonomy.
While the Chinese government has been accused of cracking down on religious freedom in the mainland, religious groups in the former British colony of Hong Kong are flourishing.
During the campaign against a now-dead extradition bill, Christians were among those taking to the streets.
Churches have become temporary support centers. The hymn ‘Sing Hallelujah to the Lord’ has become the unofficial protest anthem for Christians and non-Christians.
As clashes erupted between protesters and police over the weekend, some Christians tried to reduce tensions between the two sides by standing between them.

Based on his comment at 1:19 he clearly has no idea what he’s talking about…. There is no “Investment” and #2, the portion of the premium that goes into the policy IS NOT going into “Indexed funds”. Indexed is a growth strategy. The money that goes into the policy value simply mirrors the performance of the market. If the market goes up the account is credited the positive percentage up to a cap (some are uncapped but have a margin). If the market goes negative, the account is protected by a guaranteed floor, which is 0% in most cases. This means you’ll never be credited less than 0% regardless of how negative the market drops. ..

I’ve been a fan of Dave Ramsey for several years and I’ve followed a lot of his advice, especially when it comes to getting out of debt. However, he totally bombed this! He is so wrapped up in term insurance and very close-minded. I can’t believe he gave that woman the answer he did. HE IS WRONG! An indexed universal life (IUL) policy is NOT an investment. None of your money is ever invested in the stock market. He left out so many facts. What Dave doesn’t realize or chooses not to accept is that many wealthy people use life insurance, especially IUL to build wealth. You don’t have to put all of your money at risk in the stock market in order to build wealth. Any money that is put into the stock market is at risk, regardless of the product. I’m am pro-stock market but I also believe that some of your money, especially retirement money, should be put into other products that don’t involve risk. And, oh yeah, you CAN receive very decent rates of return on your money without it ever losing value. Dave, you really need to get your facts straight! Open your mind dude. Shame on you!..

Former Scientology member sues church, claims child abuse and human trafficking

The Church of Scientology and its leader David Miscavige are the targets of a lawsuit by a former member of the church, who alleges child abuse, human trafficking and intimidation.
The lawsuit was filed Tuesday in Los Angeles. In court documents, the defendant was called Jane Doe to protect her identity.
According to the lawsuit, Doe was born to Scientologist parents in 1979 and lived from ages 6-12 at the spiritual headquarters of the church in Clearwater.
She claims she was forced to work from 8 a.m. to midnight and only instructed on Scientologist teachings.
Doe claimed at age 10, she was subjected to a ritual called “bullbaiting,” where she says she had to sit in a chair while obscene things were shouted at her. According to the lawsuit, she was expected to show no reaction; if she did, she claims the practice would start over.
The lawsuit says when she was 15, Doe was lured to Los Angeles with promises of fair pay and a simple job. Instead, she claims she was forced to work long hours for little pay.
She became a member of the Sea Org, which the suit describes as a military-like “sub-organization for Scientology’s most dedicated members.” The suit claims members sign a “billion-year contract” dedicating their lives to the church and work an average of 100 hours a week for $46.
Doe said she started working as Miscavige’s steward seven days a week and became close to his wife, Shelly.
Miscavige, though, had a falling out with his wife in 2005, Doe said. That led to Doe being sent to “the hole,” a pair of double-wide mobile homes where those accused of ethics violations were kept under strict surveillance, the lawsuit alleges.
She claims she was kept there for three months, then sentenced to three months of hard labor.
Doe claims she witnessed a crying Shelly Miscavige being dragged into a car. Shelly Miscavige has not been seen or heard publicly since, according to the lawsuit.
Doe said she tried to escape the church in 2016 but came back because of her family connections. She finally left for good in 2017 and now works with actress Leah Remini, who has become an outspoken critic of Scientology.
Doe’s story became part of an episode of Remini’s TV series “Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath,” which told the story of defected church members.
The suit claims the church set up a hate website — leahreminiaftermath.com — that targeted Doe and the others featured on the show. The website contains what the suit calls “false, defamatory and inflammatory information about Jane Doe, all under the (Church of Scientology) copyright.”
The suit claimed similar articles and videos about Doe appeared on the official website of Freedom Magazine, a Scientology-run publication.
The lawsuit seeks damages for multiple complaints, including false imprisonment; kidnapping; stalking; libel; slander; invasion of privacy; intentional infliction of emotional distress; human trafficking; failure to pay minimum wage; exceeding maximum work hours and overtime, failure to provide days of rest and meal periods; violation of California labor codes; fraudulent inducement of employment; negligent misrepresentation; and negligence.
“Scientology for decades has sought to quash dissention, cover up its long history of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse of its members, including its most vulnerable members, its children, and weaponize its doctrine against those who escape and find the courage to speak up,” said Attorney Brian Kent of Laffey, Bucci & Kent, LLP, which filed the lawsuit. “This is just the beginning and we are not going to stop until they do.”
In response to the lawsuit, a spokesperson for the Church of Scientology said the lawsuit was filled with nothing more than unfounded allegations. The spokesperson said Jane Doe’s complaint was littered with “anti-religious slurs culled from the tabloids” and accusations that have already been disproven in courts.
“We are confident the lawsuit will fail,” the Church of Scientology wrote in an email. “Federal courts have already determined that service in the Church of Scientology’s religious order is voluntary and protected by the First Amendment. Moreover, the evidence will establish that while serving the Church, Plaintiff came and went freely, traveled the world, and lived in comfortable surroundings. The Church will vigorously defend itself against these unfounded allegations.”

Alton Chase cites several other participants in the study who were quite disturbed by the experience, and remembered years later how angry, frightened and violated they felt. Chase suggests that feelings of this kind might have driven Kaczynski to lash out against society.

Kaczynski hinted darkly that the Murray Center seemed to feel it had something to hide. But the truly disturbing aspect of Kaczynski and his ideas is not that they are so foreign but that they are so familiar. The manifesto is the work of neither a genius nor a maniac. Except for its call to violence, the ideas it expresses are perfectly ordinary and unoriginal, shared by many Americans. Its pessimism over the direction of civilization and its rejection of the modern world are shared especially with the country’s most highly educated. The manifesto is, in other words, an academic—and popular—cliché. And if concepts that many of us unreflectively accept can lead a person to commit serial murder, what does that say about us? We need to see Kaczynski as exceptional—madman or genius—because the alternative is so much more frightening….

The tension created by the family’s efforts to look good to the neighbors increased significantly when, in the fifth grade, Kaczynski scored 167 on an IQ test. It was easy for Americans to unite in condemning the World Trade Center and Oklahoma City bombings, because few approved of the bombers’ goals: the destruction of the state of Israel and of the U.S. government. But some conservatives seem to be untroubled by anti-abortion bombings or by the rise of armed militias, and some liberals consistently condone or ignore the proliferation of terrorism putatively committed on behalf of animals or the environment…”

As part of this program, Murray and other CIA-funded scientists were — allegedly — tasked with exploring the means of making and breaking an individual’s personality, and developing techniques for brainwashing and mind control including torture, sleep deprivation, and psychedelic drugs, all of which were often used on unsuspecting victims.

Murray would record the data of the subject’s anger and embarrassment and then would take the time to show the subject the video recording of their experience and specifically point out their expressions of impotent rage. Then, in July of 1979 — after having already mailed two bombs in the span of a year — having hiked far out into the woods, Kaczynski was relaxing in a hunting camp as far from humankind as he could manage. He heard the sound of airplanes going on for about an hour, followed by what he called a sonic boom. Kaczynski became so enraged and depressed at the interruption that he called off the excursion and returned to his cabin….
He began trying to shoot passing helicopters and low-flying planes with his hunting rifle, but he never succeeded, and it never helped. He remained so upset by the incident that he kept writing about it in his journal for several months….
He pointed to the automobile — once a luxury and now a necessity — to argue that “advancement” eroded personal freedom and created new norms that individuals had to adopt in order to remain in society. He argued that “progress” in the political, economic, and media structures, would destroy individuality and ecological stability. He attacked “leftism” and the push for “social reforms.”…
Kaczynski’s defense attorneys, against his wishes, prepared a convincing insanity defense. Their key piece of evidence would be Kaczynski’s cabin and argued that no sane person would willingly spend 25 years in the brutal Montana winters in such a small and rudimentary structure…

Investigators said one reason Mosser might also be linked to the other victims was that he was mentioned recently in The New York Times. At least three of the other victims, including the two last year, had been featured in articles in The Times that characterized them as leaders in their fields…”
As reported by The Independent, the initials FC stand for Freedom Club. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, a letter from the Unabomber identified that Freedom Club was a terrorist organization whose goal was the “destruction of modern industrial society in every part of the world.”..”

Actor returning to the heaven he found in E. Iowa “..Brown played John Kinsella, a former minor league player and late father of Ray Kinsella, played by Kevin Costner. The two never reconciled after a rift when Ray was 17. They argued over the guilt or innocence of John’s idol, Shoeless Joe Jackson, one of eight White Sox players accused of throwing the 1919 World Series in a gambling deal, in what became known as the Black Sox Scandal.
Now an adult, Ray is the novice farmer who heard a voice saying the movie’s other famous tagline, “If you build it, he will come.” Believing the “he” to be Jackson, Ray builds the ball diamond, against all the warnings that he’d go bankrupt tearing up the cornfield.
Spoiler alert: At the movie’s end, Ray discovers the “he” actually refers to his father, who has emerged with the other ghost players for a game there. After an awkward meeting between father and son, as John turns to disappear back into what’s left of the cornfield, Ray mends their broken hearts with a simple invitation: “Hey, Dad? You wanna have a catch?”
