“I ran the route, my QB gave me a great throw. God took care of the rest,” Diggs, a former standout at the University of Maryland, told ESPN after the game. “If you watch the play, a guy ran into another guy. I give all the glory to God. I give him the praise on this praise Sunday.”

“I still don’t know what just happened. I really don’t,” Diggs added when asked what he was thinking when he scored the game-winning touchdown. “I give it to God because without Him nothing is possible and I wouldn’t be here.”

Fellow Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen, a Minnesota native, agreed after the game and remarked, “That was God.”

“That play right there was God,” Thielen said, according to Sports Illustrated.

The 29-year-old quarterback, Keenum, who had a breakout season in 2017 after struggling through early parts of his career and will now be quarterbacking in the NFC Championship game, also praised the Lord.

“God is so good,” Keenum told Fox in a televised interview after the game. “It’s probably the third best day of my life; the day I gave my life to Jesus Christ, the day I married my wife, and probably this one.”..”

Eight years later, the Vikings can get some revenge against the New Orleans Saints.

With the Saints defeating Carolina 31-26 in a wild-card game Sunday at home, they advanced to face the Vikings in a divisional playoff at 3:40 p.m. next Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. It will be the first playoff meeting between the teams since New Orleans defeated Minnesota 31-28 in overtime in the 2009 NFC championship game.

The Vikings are the No. 2 seed in the NFC while the Saints are No. 4. The teams met in the Sept. 11 season opener, with Minnesota winning 29-19 at U.S. Bank Stadium.

The Vikings have a 2-1 playoff series edge over New Orleans, winning a wild-card game in 1987 and a divisional game in 2000. But the Saints won the most important game between the teams on Jan. 24, 2010 at the Superdome and two weeks later beat Indianapolis 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV.

Afterward, many on the Vikings alleged Saints players were trying to take quarterback Brett Favre out of the game. In 2011, the NFL initiated the “Bountygate” investigation.

In 2012, the league ruled there was a system in place in which Saints players were illegally paid bonuses for injuring opposing players. Penalties included coach Sean Payton and then-defensive coordinator Gregg Williams suspended for the entire 2012 season.

The only Vikings player remaining from the 2009 NFC championship game is defensive end Brian Robison. When asked last week about the possibility of rematch against the Saints, he said, “I’m not worried about that. This is 2017. That’s a long time ago.”

The Vikings went 13-3 during the regular season and won the NFC North while the Saints went 11-5 and won the NFC South. New Orleans didn’t look like a playoff-caliber team in the loss to open the season at Minnesota and started 0-2 before winning eight straight games.

“..At one point while tailgating Sunday afternoon, Mike decided to walk over to the Vikings’ tailgating section along with former Bethel football player and Eden Prairie native Ben Wahlquist and Ben’s younger brother, J.J. To get there, they had to cross paths with a sea of Eagles fans. They paid the price for doing so.

“I took two hot dogs and a beer can (to the body) and a football almost went by my ear,” Mike said. “The hot dog actually hurt, me getting hit in the back with a hot dog.”

Said Ben Wahlquist: “That was more verbal abuse in five minutes than I’ve taken in my entire life.”

Asked what the worst thing said to him was, Wahlquist said, “I probably shouldn’t repeat it. I went to Bethel.”

That was a common theme among Vikings fans who tailgated outside Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday…

“..However, his treatment as a young player coming from his native Puerto Rico to the states was far less dignified and truly shameful. When Clemente left the island to play professional baseball in the Los Angeles Dodgers organization he experienced unexpected discrimination based solely on skin tone — something African Americans here had long experienced.

Years earlier, as a starting pitcher for the Chicago Cubs in 1942, Hiram Bithorn became the first Puerto Rican to play in the major leagues. That was five years before Jackie Robinson “broke the color barrier.” But there was a big difference: Bithorn had light skin like all the other players in the majors.

Slugger Vic Power became the first Puerto Rican to play in the American League. But due to his dark skin, he received a different reception.

While racism is a most serious matter, Power was known to confront it with his quick wit. A long-told story from the 1950s recalls Power entering a diner and being told by the waitress, “We don’t serve Negroes,” to which he replied: “That’s OK, I don’t eat Negroes; just bring me some beans and rice.”..

..Black Pirates players were also excluded from viewing a film at a downtown theater that highlighted the 1960 World Series — as well as the annual Pirates golf tournament at the Fort Myers Country Club.

Wendell Smith, the groundbreaking African-American sportswriter who featured prominently in Jackie Robinson’s story, led the public campaign against training camp segregation.

Not mincing words, Smith wrote in the Pittsburgh Courier to and for black stars of the Chicago White Sox who trained in Sarasota: “Despite all your achievements and fame, the vicious system of racial segregation in Florida’s hick towns condemns you to a life of humiliation and ostracism.”..

Clemente and other dark-skinned players, who broke into major league baseball in the ’50s, would be forced to stay on the team bus while the white players enjoyed a meal in a nice restaurant. Their food came later when teammates would bring a burger or something else back to the bus.

Clemente, who was unfamiliar with such racial discrimination in Puerto Rico, saw the practice as insulting — what he considered to be “begging for food.” He told the other black players that anyone caught doing such a thing would have to fight him to get it.

It is gratifying to remember Roberto Clemente — deemed by biographer Maraniss as “baseball’s last hero” — for his gifted athleticism and the altruism that brought his earthly life to an early end.

But we need to remember more — especially this weekend. Racism is ugly, awful, sinful and inexcusable wherever and whenever it is found. It is not the will of God, yet it is not easily overcome. It lingers and even gets resurrected….

..A younger black player for the Pirates, Al Oliver, considered Clemente a mentor and person of sterling character. He told Maraniss that Clemente “had a problem with people who treat you differently because of where you were from, your nationality, your color, also poor people…”

Well, Jesus had a problem with that too. We should all see that as a problem — and give voice to it.”

Laying Down Roots

The roots of baseball in Latino nations can be traced back to Cuba, when young Cubans studying in the states returned home with a working knowledge of the sport. It took at least a decade for the U.S. pastime to catch on, but in 1878, the first Cuban baseball league held its inaugural game. During that time, in which Cuba assimilated the sport, Estevan Enrique “Steve” Bellán — the first Latino player to play in professional leagues in the states — made his debut in the U.S.’ National Association of Baseball Players (NABBP). Born in Havana, Cuba, Bellán studied at St. John’s College in New York, then embarked on a career in early American baseball leagues. He played big league ball from 1868 until 1873, before returning to his native Cuba to help cultivate the county’s growing infatuation with the sport as a player/manager. To this day, Bellán is credited as one of the forefathers of Cuban baseball, shuttling his experience in the states to his birthplace and using his position to infuse the first crop of Latino baseball players with the necessary fundamentals and skills to excel in the growing competition..

Breaking Barriers

Citing the growing talent of the Cuban leagues, the Cincinnati Reds visited the island in 1908 to engage in a series of exhibitions against some of the country’s top talent. In a five-game series, Cuba’s Almendares club bested the Reds, winning four of the games played. The American organization was highly impressed with two specific players: Armando Marsáns and Rafael Almeida. Marsáns and Almeida took their skills to the American minor leagues for a few seasons, but in 1911, the Reds called up the players to join their major league team, the pair becoming the first athletes from Cuba to become major leaguers since Bellán. While Almeida struggled to get off the ground — after three seasons, he was sent back to the minors — Marsáns became a rising star, ranking in the top of the National League for batting average and stolen bases. Following a career full of injuries, Marsáns ended his tenure in the majors in 1918 — last playing for the New York Yankees — then later serving as the first Cuban manager of an American minor league team….

The 1930s saw a spike in players of Latin decent entering the major leagues. Baldomero Almada debuted with the Boston Red Sox in 1933 as the first Mexican to join the upper echelon of baseball. Almada played professionally for seven seasons, and shortly after his arrival, José Góme — the second Mexican major leaguer — made his debut, becoming the first Latino player to join the Phillies organization. In 1938, a milestone was reached when Miguel Angel González — a Cuban player turned coach — became the interim manager for the St. Louis Cardinals, marking the first time a Latino held that position in the majors…

Jackie Robinson struck his fist through the racial barrier in 1947. Robinson’s signing to the Dodgers signaled that the color line, which had prevented African-Americans, as well as black Latinos from reaching the pinnacle of the sport, was about to dissolve. In rabbinic and Islamic law, a distinction is made between a judge engaged in arbitration (tahkim in Arabic, borerut in Hebrew) and a peacemaker engaged in conciliation (pius in Hebrew, solh or sulha in Arabic) or mediation (al wasata in Arabic, peshara in Hebrew). [5] This paper examines four questions regarding the peacemaker as found in Jewish rabbinic and Arab-Islamic traditions:

Who is the ideal peacemaker?
Should the peacemaker pursue peace only through acts of humility and nonviolence, or do certain situations warrant the use of force?
Should an offender approach a victim directly or send a peacemaker first?
Is the peacemaker permitted to lie in order to promote peace?

Each of these questions is examined in light of normative rabbinic and Islamic legal sources as well as descriptive accounts of peacemakers acting within Arab and Jewish societies. [6]
The Ideal Peacemaker

In Jewish rabbinic tradition, Aaron, the older brother of Moses and the first high priest of the Israelites, is the ideal peacemaker, known for “loving and pursuing peace.” [7] Aaron would “pursue peace between a man and his fellow, husband and wife, family and family, tribe and tribe.” [8] Aaron himself is described as never having fought with anyone: “If a man curses him, he says to him, ‘Peace be upon you!’ Should a man quarrel with him, he keeps silent.” [9] In rabbinic literature, the high priest (and eventually the rabbi) was the model peacemaker. One early legend found in the Babylonian Talmud tells the following story:

There were once two men who, being egged on by Satan, quarreled with one another every Friday afternoon. Rabbi Meir once came to the place and stopped them from quarrelling and settled them down for three Friday afternoons. When he had finally made peace between them, he heard Satan say, “Alas for this man [Satan] whom R. Meir has driven from this house!” [10]

In this story Rabbi Meir, one of the most respected rabbis of his time (second century CE, Palestine), made peace between the two individuals just by staying with them, thereby exorcising Satan from the house. [11]

One of the primary roles of the local rabbi, or hacham, was to promote peace in the community. In the sixteenth century, however, a small Jewish community under Ottoman rule believed it better for the communal peace that they not have a hacham. As time went by, communal conflicts increased and the community came to the realization that only a hacham could unite them all again and “mediate the peace, love and brotherhood” between them. [12]

In Jewish rabbinic tradition, the peacemaker was not always a holy or religious leader. Even jesters, according to a legend in the Babylonian Talmud could bridge differences:

Rabbi Beroka Hoza’ah was standing in the market of Debey Lapat. Elijah came and appeared to him. [R. Beroka] asked, “Who, in this market, has a share in the world to come?” He replied “No one.” … In the meantime, two [people] passed by and [Elijah] remarked, “These two have a share in the world to come.” [Rabbi Beroka] asked them, “What is your occupation?” They replied, “We are jesters. When we see people depressed we cheer them up; furthermore, when we see two people quarrelling we strive to make peace between them.” [13]

These jesters, while not appearing to the human eye to be particularly righteous or holy, are identified by the prophet Elijah as having a share in the world to come for their meritorious deeds, such as making peace through the use of humor. [14] In a similarly-themed legend, a distinguished character, though not a rabbi, identifies himself as a peacemaker; according to the legend, he is portrayed as more righteous than the rabbinic figure in the same story who focuses solely on the study of Torah. [15]

In Jewish history, there were individuals referred to as rodfei shalom (pursuers of peace) or mitavchey shalom (peace mediators). These peacemakers were active in communities from eleventh-century Muslim Spain through fifteenth-century Christian Prague and until twentieth-century Morocco. Unlike earlier traditions, such as Aaron, the pursuer of peace, these peacemakers were not holy or religious leaders but generally well-respected laypeople. Also in contrast to Aaron, these peacemakers did not act alone in their pursuit of peace. [16] It is interesting to note that mentions of these community peacemakers ended with the immigration of Jews to Israel from North Africa in the 1950s.

In Islamic tradition, Muhammad, known as the Prophet and Allah’s Apostle, is considered the ideal peacemaker. For example, in the hadith of Sahih al-Bukhari, several accounts of Muhammad making peace are narrated by Sahl bin Sad:

There was a dispute amongst the people of the tribe of Bani ‘Amr bin ‘Auf. The Prophet went to them along with some of his companions in order to make peace between them. … Once the people of Quba fought with each other till they threw stones on each other. When Allah’s Apostle was informed about it, he said, “Let us go to bring about reconciliation between them.” [17]

In several Arab-Islamic societies today, such as rural Jordan, [18] northern Israel, [19] Bedouin groups of Israel’s Negev region,[20] and Sunni communities in Lebanon, [21] the mediator or peacemaker is a well-respected lay leader. [22] These peacemakers may be referred to as members of the jaha (delegation), which in Arabic, according to Elias Jabbour, a peacemaker in northern Israel, “suggests that these people have attained a high level of respect in the region.” [23] The respect given to the peacemaker may be due, for example, to his advanced age, leadership position in the community, or wealth. [24] These peacemakers almost always act as part of a delegation and not alone. [25]

Alternatively, in some Arab-Islamic societies, the peacemaker is a holy or religious leader. For instance, amongst the Berber Bedouin in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco, it is insufficient to be a respected member of society; to be a peacemaker one must also be born into the sect of the “saints.” [26] According to Gellner, these saints serve the Bedouin people living around them, “not only to mediate with God, but also to help with inter- and intra-tribal political mediation.” [27] Gellner also writes that the saints “claimed not to feud or litigate at all. A mediator who was himself involved in a network of hostilities and alliances would not be much use for mediation and sanctuary.” [28] According to Ginat, the saint, as opposed to the peacemaker of Bedouin and rural Arab societies, works alone in mediating conflicts. [29]

Hamzeh has noted that in Shia communities in Lebanon there has been a shift in recent years from the model of respected lay leader as peacemaker to the model of religious leader associated with the Hizbullah as peacemaker. [30] Abu-Nimer also notes that in Gaza, the peacemaker is often a religious leader, such as an imam who may be “the most trusted person in the community because of his strict observance of Islamic values and traditions.” [31]

Both Jewish rabbinic and Arab-Islamic traditions regard the identity of the peacemaker in two ways. One way is that of the religious and holy leader—a high priest, rabbi, saint, or imam, for example—who acts alone in making peace. The second is that of the respected lay leader who generally acts as one member in a delegation of peacemakers. Both of these models sharply contrast with the Western image of the peacemaker or mediator where the peacemaker rejects any claim to power or authority over the conflicting parties; The peacemaker is, instead, responsible only for the mediation process itself. [32]

But in reality, it simply illustrates the increasing involvement of the media in deep political warfare. Likewise we must go beyond the public and Spielbergian narratives on the Pentagon Papers to understand what was really at stake. In both scandals, I believe the leadership of both the New York Times and the Washington Post, the two biggest propaganda machines in the US, were acting not only in the service of truth, but also in service of a power deeper than the deep state they were exposing. It was during that period that Israel chose to launch its operation to annex Egyptian, Syrian and Jordanian territories, by creating the illusion that it was acting in self-defense. Johnson had given Israel a green light in a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, dated June 3: “I want to protect the territorial integrity of Israel […] and will provide as effective American support as possible to preserve the peace and freedom of your nation and of the area.”[7] Johnson also asked the CIA to transmit to the Israeli army the precise positions of the Egyptian air bases to be destroyed….

The survivors received a medal in an unadvertised ceremony, accompanied by a formal order never to mention the incident. Only recently have some broken the silence.[9] Johnson accepted Israel’s spurious “targeting error” explanation, and rewarded the unprovoked attack by lifting the embargo on the sale of offensive military equipment to Israel….

However, the ongoing tensions and conflicts there have led to the dispersal of Arab Christians and the decline of the church. Of the three major religions that claim Jerusalem as a special place, only Christianity lacks a concrete role in its governance. Christians should have a vested interest in peace in the Middle East and a desire to rebuild Christian influence. Christians should have a stake in the outcome of peace efforts, including a role in the administration of Jerusalem. Although placing Jerusalem under international control benefits Christianity, Judaism, and Islam, Christians have been forced to back off because of heavy pressure from Jews and Muslims. This has created additional hurdles to overcome for Christians contributing to peacemaking…”

Sports: Minnesota Vikings-NFC Wild Card Playoff Game Reflection

Monday, January 11th 2016– I’m no expert in football as I never played an “organized” game. However, I did play pick-up games in school and in my neighborhood growing up. I love playing the sport and watching it too. I’ve been a Vikings fan since I can remember growing-up as I started to get into it through peers (e.g. football cards). I decided to share my personal thoughts as a Minnesota Viking fan of yesterday’s heart breaker game. First of all, they had a great season (11-5) and congratulations on winning the NFC North last weekend by beating our own rivals (Green Bay Packers) at Lambeau Field!

My heart goes to Blair Walsh as I cannot “totally” relate as I’ve never was a kicker or a organized football player. However, as a person that played baseball in high school, I had “many” mistakes. One that has stuck out at times was making a “mistake” as a pinch runner and got caught leading off 3rd base, which was the 3rd out. If I stayed in a safe distance, I could’ve scored a key run in the game against the best team (Cretin Durham Hall) in our conference (St. Paul Conference). Yeah, it was NO big deal as it was just a J.V. game, but it really broke my self-esteem as a sophomore in high school. Anyways, this is my only way I can related to Walsh.

We talked about whether Walsh kicking the laces made a difference, how the weather affected Walsh, and how he rebounds from this….

I watched the swing a few times right away, and the technique looked clean all the way. The problem that I saw is that the plant foot of Walsh was a little too close to the ball, and because of that, his foot did sort of hook around the ball a little bit. That essentially caused the ankle impact there. From my perspective, the plant foot being a little too close there was probably what did it.

That being said, there are a lot of things that could have happened that would be impossible for you or me to know having not been there. The kick before was almost blocked by Richard Sherman coming around the edge, so maybe Walsh speeds up his mechanics a little bit to try and avoid that. You have icy conditions out there, so maybe it’s a case where he’s just trying to make a solid plant, and he ends up in the wrong place because he’s changing his mechanics just that little bit. All these things could have factored in, but it’s impossible for us to know.

The icy conditions were really the X-factor here. Was Walsh keeping his leg warm? Was that a factor?

The NFL does a lot to keep players warm on the sidelines. You’ve got heated benches. Even on those benches, you’ve got areas where players can click in to keep their feet at least a little bit heated up. But when it’s -4 degrees out, there’s only so much a heated seat and foot warmers can do.

When I was kicking in college, the coldest I ever kicked in was probably 20 or 25 degrees, and even then, it’s like kicking a brick. If you make contact with the laces like that? I wouldn’t be surprised if you look at Walsh’s foot today and saw bruises up and down because of how hard it was. It’s a heavy ball, you don’t have a lot of feeling in your feet, and it’s not an easy situation to kick in…”

Sal: I just played indoor soccer several weeks ago and didn’t have the best shoes. Every time I kicked the ball, it hurt the side of my feet. I just can’t imagine Walsh’s feet after successfully kicking 3 field goals (the only points for the Vikings) in that cold weather yesterday. I’m sure his feet was already in pain and this probably played a factor.

After watching this episode, I questioned myself-“If Whittemore had some prior counseling of his abusive father in his upbringing, could all this been prevented?”

It seems like people who grew-up in a abusive environment, some take it to their own future partners/relationships? What can be done?

Healed from Head Concussion?

After a softball game injury (e.g. nose fracture), I started to have some symptoms of a head concussion:

-headache

-dizziness

– nausea

-dazed feeling
(see medicinenet.com)

..however, after “googling” the above list and not having the others (e.g. visual symptoms, irritability, etc..). I didn’t quickly react to feeling I had to see a docter..yet! I did share this with some people and a friend (nurse) actually told me I should at least get it checked (e.g. brain scan) out. I remember my college days when I had a skiing accident (e.g. knee injury), I went to see a doctor in the ER. I was more worried about the “financial” costs than the “medical’ issue. Two months later still feeling these symptoms (mentioned above), I had the opportunity for a short prayer service for healing at a local church in Fargo, North Dakota after participating in this event (see Impact World Tour) in October.

..Well, I had several friends from this local church lay hands and prayed for healing! It took a week after when I realized I haven’t been feeling any of the symptoms (mentioned above). Praise God! I’m thankful to God for his healing power! I feel bad I haven’t had the opportunity to share this until now (3 months later) as I’ve been caught up with the “busyness” of life. I’ve been hearing so many stories on the news of this increasingly “health issue” and want to encourage the rest of the world that they can “at least try” to get prayer for healing…

“Heavenly Father, we thank you for sending your Jesus Christ on died on the cross for the forgiveness of our sins so we may have eternal life. We also thank you for the abundant life you promised too. We believe healing is included in that “abundant life” because you give freely to those who ask in Your name. Thus, we ask you for your healing touch in our head and that you take our “head concussion” (or any health ailments you ay have you) away..in Jesus’ MIGHTY name..AMEN!”
