It was certainly an “adventure” driving earlier today from Morris to St. Paul for the Christmas holidays. It was the day after our first winter-storm-blizzard of the 2020-2021 Winter Season. I was checking the road conditions from Morris to the Twin Cities and was expecting “good” conditions from Morris to Monticello. However, I saw the map that there will be some “rough” conditions from Monticello to the Twin Cities based on the 511mn.org site. I kept thinking to myself that the road conditions will be improved by the time I drive through this area after this sunny day.
When I left Morris, the amount of snow in the ground was about an inch or so. It depends on the area as we had snow drifts created from the 60 mph winds (blizzard). We didn’t even have work despite the smaller amounts of snowfall, but the “blizzard ” wind conditions made it “crazy” to drive in. Fortunately, it was a “nicer” day despite the below zero weather (high was only 0 F). I chose to drive when there was daylight, which I was aiming to get home by sunset. It took a little longer than I wanted to depart from Morris as it was around a little after 2ish. There was some patchy snow conditions in various parts along Minnesota State Highway 28, which I learned from the past (had a small car accident last month while driving to work ; pt-job during the weekend) to “eye” far ahead and be ready to slow down to avoid slipping and driving off the road like my past accident (see map) . I finally made it to Sauk Centre to go much “faster” on the interstate (I-94) after some uneventful driving (went through Starbuck without the State Patrol driving the opposite way nor the local police squad car pulling me over)…thank God!
I got to Sauk Centre around a little after 3ish and the sun was still out. Driving on I-94 was pretty smooth sailing most of the way that I can remember..driving the speed limit and just a little over (no more than 5). I even passed by a State Patrol by the St. Cloud (north exit) as he/she was making sure all of us were driving “safely”. It wasn’t until I reached Monticello , which I remembered looking at the “road conditions” that the challenge will start. Part of some lanes were still covered, which I drove the other at times. I kept looking ahead to determine which lane to go on as there were cars behind me and wanted to keep that safe distance.
It was worse around Elk River and the “fun” started. While driving, I was listening to various radio stations that would play “Christmas” music. I started singing my own “parody” (“White Christmas”..”I’m wishing we didn’t have a white Christmas…”). The timing of this snow might be great for others, but “hectic” for us drivers. Anyways, I would pass by so many cars that ended up on the ditch. I was tempted to help one particular vehicle that crashed into a pile of snow in the concrete median. Thank God there was snow there or it could’ve been worse. I wanted to stop and see if I could help them, but notice I had a low tank. I wanted to fill my tank earlier , but I was in a rush to beat the sunset and wanted to take advantage of the “sun ” while it was up (Winter Solstice was earlier this week, so we are slowly going to gain some daylight…woot woot!)
There was one semi truck that was stalled on the right side of the highway going east and many cars were pulling to the exit ramp beforehand in Maple Grove. However, as I slowly drove pass it from the inner lane , I notice it was probably a running out of gas issue or some maintenance issue. Thank God it wasn’t serious..no other vehicles involved based on my observation. There was some type of pick-up truck with it’s emergency lights flashing, so probably some road side service waiting for a tow. As I write this, I do remember passing a huge “semi-truck ” tow vehicle during my drive , which was probably heading to this situation.
Minnesota Weather: Following Winter Storm, Bitter Wind Chills For Christmas Eve By Mike AugustyniakDecember 24, 2020 at 12:00 pm minnesota.cbslocal.com ” …According to meteorologist Mike Augustyniak, Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport received 8.8 inches of snow, but totals varied widely around the metro area. Maple Grove saw 9 inches, while Shoreview and Forest Lake picked up only 5 to 6 inches. Downtown Minneapolis and St. Paul received about 6 inches, while Woodbury picked up 6 inches. Other areas, like Cambridge and Anoka, saw about 9 inches.
You gotta remember the temperatures were single digits, which it’s always important to have a full tank of gas to keep your vehicle running in case you get stalled or land in a ditch to keep warm while waiting for help. I fortunately had my emergency supplies (e.g. sleeping bag, food, water, etc..); however, low gas tank! I was taking a gamble driving with a low tank, but again I wanted to beat the sunset and take advantage of the day light. However, it really started to get dark by 5ish and was still outside of the Twin Cities.
After passing the stalled semi-truck, I was heading to Highway 694 to the Twin Cities… yeah! However, this stretch to St. Paul was still a challenge. I notice so many vehicles! It was probably “late Christmas” shoppers trying to get their “last minute” gifts or groceries before stores close early or close Christmas day. The roads were still “bad” as I was driving 35mph most of the time along the stretch to St. Paul. I didn’t see many stalled vehicles, but just heavy traffic. It was rush hour too! I remember seeing some accidents on the other side of the highway going west on 694. I try to remember to pray (silently or audibly) all the time I hear or see emergency vehicles rushing with their sirens and lights flashing. I saw this ambulance going pretty fast the opposite direction.
I finally would reached St. Paul around 5:45ish; however, still rush hour traffic. I remember passing this vehicle going slow on the “fast lane” and a car behind it was honking. I feel for that person as I drove very slow after my “car accident” last month when I drove off the state highway. I was nervous and worried I’ll do it again, so cars would pass me as I would turn on my flashers to give them ahead notice I’ll be slowing down every time I would see an up-coming snow patch…just drove more cautiously ever since, which we all should! However, drive to the “slower lane” if possible to let “dare devil” fast drivers take their chances on these slippery roads!
When I reached my destination, I wanted to get some groceries and gas. I went to Sunray shopping center to find out the Cub Foods grocery store closed early 😦 I then went to get gas on my way back home and saw I had about 2-3 or less gallons of gas..close to empty! Thanking God I was able to get home with enough gas. After filling gas, I decided to checkout Target after googling on my phone that it was still open…yeah! I was hoping to get some groceries even though my parents didn’t need any after texting and calling them while waiting for my tank to be filled with gas at the nearby gas station.
As I drove towards Target (1/2 mile or so from Sunray) , the roads were still bad! I was going up a hill towards White Bear Avenue from Old Hudson Road past the new Capital View Apartments. Besides me there was a van stuck and couldn’t go up the hill. Fortunately, there were some “good Samaritans” helping and would end up helping me later as I was trying to turn left when the light turned green. I had no luck going up the icy hill, so I ended up turning right (opposite direction to Target) with the help of the “good Samaritans”. I opened my driver side window to yell thank you and wave my hand as I drove off to show my appreciation, While driving the opposite direction of my destination on White Bear, I was looking for a time to turn back. I drove to my old church (St. Pascals) and turned around the side road. However, as I was turning, I ended up getting stuck. I would drive back and forth (tires burning ), which I finally got out safely and drove back to White Bear going to my destination. As I was driving towards Target, I realized so many cars going the same direction. It was packed! I even saw the Target lot parking lot packed with shoppers! I decided to not even go there and just head home. However, the road (going down hill) going to Suburban Avenue from White Bear pass the interstate 94 bridge was icy!! I saw my vehicle slowly going to the right lane nearly colliding with the vehicle right side of me. I also notice vehicles ahead of me sliding down the hill , so I kept my distance to avoid a head on collision. Fortunately, I was able to get some traction and got back to the left lane to turn to Suburban. After that ordeal, I just felt I needed to “do something” about that icy stretch. I pulled over to the BP gas station on that corner and decided to get some sand or gravel. I saw an open bag of sand an gravel outside of the gas station. I went inside and asked if I could buy that bag and put some on the icy hill. However, the attendant told me it’s only for the store. She suggested me using the salt. I decided to buy a bag (blue) of salt and I went to icy hill and spread this bag after seeing so many other cars after me sliding ..of course I did this safely as I waited for that opportune time (e.g no cars and would put my hand up to tell them to stop and have me put some salt in front and back of their tires.
After using the whole bag, I decided to buy 3 more! I took another bag out and waited to see any more opportunities. I would spray as much salt again on the icy road . One car had trouble going up the hill (towards the bridge), so sprayed some in front and back of the tires. The passenger in the back asked me to help push their vehicle and put salt on the back tires area. I then started pushing on the icy road and was having trouble. Fortunately, the car behind her had a willing passenger (teenager) to get out and help me push this vehicle up the hill. This teenager said..”wow, it’s icy” as he was slipping ” but we both manged to push this car! I thanked him and we went are separate ways.
“Pic taken December 23rd 2010”
It was getting too cold for me as my hands were getting cold. I decided to “retire” and head home. I took the 2 extra bags as part of my driving emergency kit. I also used one of the bags to add some extra weight on the back of my car and hoping this will help me later on. As I drove off from the gas station on Suburban Avenue, I notice many cars struggling up the hill. There was one vehicle that was stuck blocking my entry way towards Burns Avenue. I ended up getting stuck as I lost my momentum going up the hill. I found my car turning left and doing a 180 degree turn. Fortunately the car behind me gave me some distance, so I can drive off and went back to Suburban Avenue. Since I grew up in this neighborhood of East St. Paul, I knew the other detours to get home…
I took the detour and finally got home. The driveway wasn’t shoveled really well on my parent’s home. I decided to shovel it before I parked my car and finally got home a little after 7ish..halleluah!
As I write this (10:24pm -yesterday now as it’s 9:05am Christmas Day) , I was curious if the road conditions between Monticello and the Twin Cities improved..
Looks like it hasn’t. Stay safe out there as we are expecting new storm system later next week.
Christmas Day (Friday, December 25th 2020) Update:
Use common sense – if public safety officials say not to travel, don’t
Keep cruise control off – powertrain engaging when wheels are on ice (say on bridge surface) can send you into a spin
Allow more following distance – tires don’t stop as quickly on slippery surfaces
Wear a seatbelt – goes without saying
Fuel up when you reach half a tank – can keep vehicle running and warm in case of emergency
Keep a phone charger in your vehicle..”
I hope this will encourage you to “pay it forward” and help those who might need it this “holiday” season and “every” season. God bless and stay safe!

In 2014, the world avoided a horrific global outbreak of Ebola, thanks to thousands of selfless health workers — plus, frankly, thanks to some very good luck. In hindsight, we know what we should have done better. So, now’s the time, Bill Gates suggests, to put all our good ideas into practice, from scenario planning to vaccine research to health worker training. As he says, “There’s no need to panic … but we need to get going.”

Responding to Pandemics: 4 Lessons from Church History
March 16, 2020 | Glen Scrivener thegospelcoalition.org “…Here I’ll briefly mention four pandemics in history and how the church has responded in the way of Christ. As we note their examples, let’s be inspired by their faith—even if we might make some adjustments for our own time and circumstances. Their impulse to move toward the needy, displayed in heroic sacrifice, is entirely Christlike; we dare not be less sacrificial in the love we seek to embody. At the same time, the wisdom of such moves in our own day, when we may ourselves be carriers of the infection, needs careful thought. As we look to these historic examples, let the Spirit lead us in our application. But let our own spirits be stirred toward faith, hope, and love. And may we—with our own pandemic—live out the wisdom and way of Jesus before a watching world…”

Same strain of influenza was released by accident three decades ago “…Almost 6,000 Britons have now been infected with the influenza “A” (H1N1) strain of swine flu. But two medical researchers believe that this strain of the virus had been extinct in the human population for more than 20 years until it was unwittingly reintroduced by scientists working in a research lab somewhere in the world, leading to a pandemic in 1977 that began in Russia and China.
“Careful study of the genetic origin of the [1977] virus showed that it was closely related to a 1950 strain, but dissimilar to influenza ‘A’ (H1N1) strains from both 1947 and 1957. This finding suggested that the 1977 outbreak strain had been preserved since 1950. The re-emergence was probably an accidental release from a laboratory source,” according to the study published in The New England Journal of Medicine…

10 Misconceptions About the 1918 ‘Spanish Flu’ PUBLISHED 17 MARCH 2020 THE CONVERSATION snopes.com
In the pandemic of 1918, between 50 and 100 million people are thought to have died, representing as much as 5% of the world’s population. “…Especially remarkable was the 1918 flu’s predilection for taking the lives of otherwise healthy young adults, as opposed to children and the elderly, who usually suffer most. Some have called it the greatest pandemic in history.
The 1918 flu pandemic has been a regular subject of speculation over the last century. Historians and scientists have advanced numerous hypotheses regarding its origin, spread and consequences. As a result, many harbor misconceptions about it.
By correcting these 10 misconceptions, everyone can better understand what actually happened and help mitigate COVID-19’s toll….
1. The pandemic originated in Spain
No one believes the so-called “Spanish flu” originated in Spain.
The pandemic likely acquired this nickname because of World War I, which was in full swing at the time. The major countries involved in the war were keen to avoid encouraging their enemies, so reports of the extent of the flu were suppressed in Germany, Austria, France, the United Kingdom and the U.S. By contrast, neutral Spain had no need to keep the flu under wraps. That created the false impression that Spain was bearing the brunt of the disease.
In fact, the geographic origin of the flu is debated to this day, though hypotheses have suggested East Asia, Europe and even Kansas….
3. The first wave of the pandemic was most lethal
…Scientists now believe that the marked increase in deaths in the second wave was caused by conditions that favored the spread of a deadlier strain. People with mild cases stayed home, but those with severe cases were often crowded together in hospitals and camps, increasing transmission of a more lethal form of the virus….
8. Widespread immunization ended the pandemic
Immunization against the flu was not practiced in 1918, and thus played no role in ending the pandemic.
Exposure to prior strains of the flu may have offered some protection. For example, soldiers who had served in the military for years suffered lower rates of death than new recruits….
Why the 1918 Spanish Flu Probably Didn’t Originate in Spain

100 years ago, celebrations marking the end of the First World War were cut short by the onslaught of a devastating disease – the 1918-19 influenza pandemic. Its early origins and initial geographical starting point still remain a mystery but in the Summer of 1918, there was a second wave of a far more virulent form of the influenza virus than anyone could have anticipated. Soon dubbed ‘Spanish Flu’ after its effects were reported in the country’s newspapers, the virus rapidly spread across much of the globe to become one of the worst natural disasters in human history.
To mark the centenary and to highlight vital scientific research, the University of Cambridge has made a new film exploring what we have learnt about Spanish Flu, the urgent threat posed by influenza today, and how scientists are preparing for future pandemics.

The individual presumed to have coronavirus landed in Toronto on Jan. 22, after travelling to Wuhan, China, and was hospitalized the next day, say health officials.
“State and federal health officials on Friday announced steps to confront the global spread of a novel coronavirus that emerged in China last month, following the discovery of a second confirmed U.S. infection and 63 suspected cases — including two in Minnesota….
In the two confirmed U.S. cases, the travelers returned from China before their symptoms emerged. CDC officials said that sort of lag could make it hard to catch cases via airport screening. The CDC advised that no Americans take non-essential travel to Wuhan, and to take public health precautions such as wearing masks and washing hands while traveling to other regions of China.

What a Coincidence! A U.S. Patent For ‘An Attenuated Coronavirus’ Was Filed In 2015 And Granted In 2018 Photo of Michael Snyder Michael SnyderJanuary 26, 2020 dcdirtylaundry.com “..We are being told that the coronavirus outbreak which is currently escalating at an exponential rate probably started with a snake. Perhaps that is true, but a lot of researchers are now pointing out some really odd “coincidences” regarding this outbreak. For example, China’s very first biosafety-level-4 lab is located just 20 miles away from where this outbreak supposedly originated. And a news report about this lab from a few years ago specifically stated that it would be “studying the pathogen that causes SARS”. Of course SARS was caused by a coronavirus, and now a “new coronavirus” has been unleashed in the only Chinese city where coronavirus research was being conducted.
..
This patent was filed by the Pilbright Institute, and as Stefan Stanford has pointed out, some of the major backers of the Pilbright Institute include the World Health Organization, the European Commission, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation….
The lab cost approximately 44 million dollars to build, and the Nature article specifically mentioned that future plans for the facility included “studying the pathogen that causes SARS”.
In other words, coronavirus research was to be conducted in this lab.
Perhaps it is just a wild coincidence that the coronavirus outbreak began in the only city in China with a biosafety-level-4 lab that was conducting coronavirus research…”

Coronavirus epidemic update 10 by pulmonologist Dr. Seheult of https://www.MedCram.com
This video illustrates the basic reproduction number and spread of the coronavirus, updated confirmed cases, the safety of packages from China, and coronavirus quarantines and evacuations. Dr. Seheult also discusses a recent Lancet article about coronavirus hospital admissions, MuLBSTA score, and unsubstantiated theories such as an HIV association with coronavirus.
He had sent out a warning to fellow medics on 30 December but police told him to stop “making false comments”.
There had been contradictory reports about his death, but the People’s Daily now says he died at 02:58 on Friday (18:58 GMT Thursday).
The virus has killed 636 people and infected 31,161 in mainland China, the National Health Commission’s latest figures show.
The death toll includes 73 new deaths reported on Thursday…”

Yes, there were similar discussions by another Chinese Youtuber about this lady Huang Yanling. The story is pretty much the same: she worked in the P3 Lab (the one where Shih is the director but Wuhan does have a P4 lab as well) and she died unexpectedly. When she was cremated, she also infected the worker in the nearby crematorium. As to why Shih and others in Wuhan focused on studying bats, it is said that they were studying how to weaponize the coronavirus. That is why China won’t allow US CDC to enter to help in the earlier days. They were afraid of being found that they were trying to create a bioweapon! Of course, all this leads to conspiracy theory, but there are just too many coincidences for people not to get suspicious! Also, China is making such an effort to point the blame to others. They clearly know what they are guilty of and are trying super hard to get away from it.

My mother works at a similar lab in North America and has contacts with people who worked at the Wuhan virology lab. When I shared her this, she definitely thinks this is plausible. When they analyze viruses in a lab, they increase the quantity and concentration of the virus to make it easier to study. If this was mishandled, the lab staff could easily get infected and given what we know about the disease, it could easily spread from there…
Coronavirus patient says disease ‘not the scary thing that everyone thinks it is’ Fox News Flash
Published February 29 foxnews.com “…In some cases, these discoveries in the apothecary led to innovation in the kitchen. For example, in Asia, the use of orange zest, lemon zest and dried orange peel in cooking developed out of the knowledge of their application as remedies for digestive disorders. A little citrus peel in your diet can go a long way….
For hundreds of years, herbalists trained in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) have used mature mandarin orange peel, known as chen pi or ju pi in Chinese medicine, to improve digestion, relieve intestinal gas and bloating, and resolve phlegm. This peel acts primarily on the digestive and respiratory systems. We apply it in conditions involving a sense of distension and fullness in the chest and upper middle abdomen combined with loss of appetite, vomiting or diarrhea, or coughs with copious phlegm.
Immature mandarin orange peel, known as qing pi in Chinese medicine, acts primarily on the liver and stomach to promote digestion, relieve food retention and abdominal distension, and promote good liver function. Practitioners of Chinese herbology use this herb when the sense of distension and discomfort lies primarily under the rib cage rather than the central abdomen. …
Citrus peels also contain hesperidin, a flavonoid that reduces the proliferation of cancer cells and induces programmed cell death in human colon cancer cells. Korean researchers found that qing pi extract induces programmed cell death in human colon cancer cells.

A transmission in Germany may be the first person-to-person infection of coronavirus outside Asia. Officials say a man contracted the virus from a Chinese colleague at a conference. Other confirmed cases of the viral outbreak in Europe have so far involved patients who had recently been to China. Other than Germany, more than a dozen countries have confirmed cases of the virus. In China, the death toll has jumped to 100, with more than 45-hundred cases confirmed. Scientific studies suggest each infected person passes the virus on to two or three other people, on average. Entire cities are already under quarantine, and now the government has asked people to delay foreign travel. For millions, worrying and waiting are the new normal. Spreading almost as rapidly as the coronavirus itself are false information and conspiracy theories about it. So what’s true and what’s fake?”

Welcome to the China Angle. I’m Simone Gao. There are several important points about the #Coronavirus that must be discussed. The first point is the real scope of the #epidemic, including the number of people infected and the death toll. Second, the biosafety of #China’s #P4 labs, and if the virus was in fact leaked from those labs. And third is the origin of the virus itself; could it have been created in Chinese laboratories? Today we’ll address the second point – whether the virus was leaked from a lab in Wuhan.

Regarding “peddling conspiracy theories”, Im not discussing suspicions raised by people on Reddit or 8 Chan, officials from world governments are saying it. Should I censor what these nation’s officials are claiming? When do I pick and choose which claim to cover and which to ignore? Just because you might not agree with the theory doesn’t mean it shouldn’t be heard. New Coronavirus Wasn’t ‘Predicted’ In Simulation
By Angelo Fichera Posted on January 29, 2020 .factcheck.org “…There was in fact an exercise (called “Event 201”) that took place in October that was hosted by the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security — which the Gates Foundation participated in — that focused on emergency preparedness in the event of a “very severe pandemic.” But it didn’t deal with 2019-nCoV, and it didn’t make real-life predictions about death tolls.
“To be clear, the Center for Health Security and partners did not make a prediction during our tabletop exercise. For the scenario, we modeled a fictional coronavirus pandemic, but we explicitly stated that it was not a prediction,” the center said in a statement. “Instead, the exercise served to highlight preparedness and response challenges that would likely arise in a very severe pandemic. We are not now predicting that the nCoV-2019 outbreak will kill 65 million people. Although our tabletop exercise included a mock novel coronavirus, the inputs we used for modeling the potential impact of that fictional virus are not similar to nCoV-2019.”..”

Lieber told investigators and Harvard University officials in 2018 that he “is not and has never been a participant” in the program and he “had no formal association” with Wuhan University after 2012, according to court documents. He claimed the university “continued to falsely exaggerate” his involvement. …

Lieber allegedly failed to do so on multiple occasions, including when he was asked about his Chinese ties from curious investigators. We would like to have a chat with him about his “prophetic visions”on what seems to have striking similarities with the nVoC-2019 Coronavirus.
We now all know that the Coronavirus pandemic was not, as some early reports claimed, the product of a Wuhan seafood market, where people were allegedly eating infected bats, but instead a Chinese biological weapon that had escaped from the Wuhan Institute of Virology, and one lab, in particular, that seems to match the description of the RDNA labs in Dean Koontz’s fictional book. Koontz, who obviously has contacts with U.S. military intelligence must have known in the early 80s that the Chinese were working on this kind of thing.

In his recent sermon on 16 Feb 2020 (Anointing Oil For Healing And Protection), Pastor Prince screened an excerpt from a sermon he preached on 19 August 2018 in which he prophesied a new strain of flu-like virus that was to come. He also shared how God has already released a new “strain” of healing among His people.
The coronavirus is not from God but from the devil, who comes to steal, kill, and destroy (see John 10:10).
This sermon excerpt assures us that we, God’s people, need not worry during these dangerous and uncertain times because God is always ahead of the devil. The devil plays catch up to God, not the other way around!
While we exercise wisdom in carrying out our daily affairs, we can live fearless and confident in God’s protection, knowing that even if a thousand fall at our side and ten thousand at our right hand, it shall not come near us (see Ps. 91:7). Instead of allowing fear to dictate our every move, let’s continue to place our entire trust in the Lord and claim His powerful promises of protection found in Psalm 91.

When sepsis happens, the cytokine surge caused by sepsis is activated, and neutrophils in the lungs accumulate in the lungs, destroying alveolar capillaries. Early clinical studies have shown that vitamin C can effectively prevent this process. In addition, vitamin C can help to eliminate alveolar fluid by preventing the activation and accumulation of neutrophils, and reducing alveolar epithelial water channel damage. At the same time, vitamin C can prevent the formation of neutrophil extracellular traps, which is a biological event of vascular injury caused by neutrophil activation. Vitamins can effectively shorten the duration of the common cold. In extreme conditions (athletes, skiers, art workers, military exercises), it can effectively prevent the common cold. And whether vitamin C also has a certain protective effect on influenza patients, only few studies have shown that vitamin C deficiency is related to the increased risk and severity of influenza infections. Coronavirus – Prayer Requests From the Church in Wuhan, China asiaharvest.org “…Over the years, Asia Harvest has printed and delivered more than 380,000 Bibles to believers in Hubei. A Prayer Request from a Wuhan Pastor:
* Peace be upon you. At this time the virus has been at the center of our thoughts and lives. We are always watching the latest news, and thinking about how our family and the church should face this.
* As for my family, I have gathered masks and food and have ventured outside as little as possible. When venturing out in public I have worn a mask, but as for the rest, I place my life in the Lord’s hands.
* As for the church, we are all part of a great struggle. We are facing a severe test of our faith, and we feel that Christians in our city are not only called to suffer with the people, but we have been called to pray for those who are fearful, and to introduce them to the peace of Christ…”

“..“Breakthrough, which is based on Joyce Smith’s 2017 book “The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection” (co-written with the Christian author and media personality Ginger Kolbaba), presents itself as the true story of a modern miracle. But it’s also a portrait of what religious faith looks like when there’s no pesky doubt to get in the way.
Dead for Over an Hour, Son Comes Back to Life cbn.com “..“He’s been dead for 45 minutes.” These words met Joyce as she saw her son. On Monday, January 19, 2015, 14-year-old John Smith had spent the night with two friends,- Josh Rieger & Josh Sander – after winning a close basketball game the night before. John scored the winning shot. Joyce had spoken to John and was prepared to go pick him up when she got a chilling phone call minutes later from friend Cindy saying, “There’s been an accident.” John had fallen through the ice on Lake Saint Louise. First responders had pulled him out but “he didn’t have a heartbeat.” Stunned, after calling husband Brian & her sister, Joyce raced to the hospital praying all the way. Joyce burst into the ER as doctors feverishly worked to bring life back to John’s lifeless body. Sensing little hope, Dr. Stutterer finally told her, “You can go up and talk to your son.” “In that moment I knew I had to get desperate with my Lord. I had to get a hold of God and get a hold of him fast,” she says. Remembering a Beth Moore Bible study, she knew that the Holy Spirit had raised Christ Jesus from the dead. That same power was available to us. “All of a sudden, everyone and everything in that room faded away and it was just me and John and God. With a voice I thought was quiet, but that actually bellowed through the room, down the hallway, …. I declared, ‘I believe in a God who can do miracles! Holy Spirit, I need you right now to come and breathe life back into my son!” She closed her eyes and wept, and at that instant, she heard the sound of a miracle. John’s heart monitor sprang back to life. John’s recovery was slow but sure. Doctors expected and wanted to prepare the family that massive brain damage would affect him, but every test showed remarkable healing. His recovery defied every medical & scientific expectation, and 16 days later he walked out of the hospital under his own power, completely healed.
POWER OF PRAYER
Joyce knows that prayer really does work. As John lay in the hospital she marveled at how the Lord had brought John into her and Brian’s life unexpectedly when most parents were entering the empty nest stage. Looking back she remembered that at 17 years old she fell in love with a man six years older and a divorced father of two. Headstrong, she didn’t listen to her parents and became pregnant after high-school graduation. She was happy until Charlie told her to get rid of it. She hid her pregnancy, wearing baggy clothes, etc, and turned down a music scholarship for college thinking she would get married. Charlie never changed so she agreed to give the baby up for adoption. She never told her parents. He took her to a hospital where the doctor induced labor. “I gave birth to a baby boy with a round, chubby face, huge blue eyes, and a light covering of blond hair on his head,” she says. She adored him. On the third day she awoke and her baby boy was gone, taken away. “I begged for death to take me, as I sobbed into my pillow,” Joyce says. It was four days later her stunned parents found out she had given birth and had not told them. She did stay with Charlie and a subsequent pregnancy lead them to marry. During the hard years of this marriage Joyce turned to God again in her life. He answered her prayer and she didn’t miscarry her son Tom. She went back to church but eventually divorced Charlie.
A single mom with two boys, she met Brian who loved her boys and they married. Brian, a videographer, had a heart for missions and went on several trips . His heart for the children lead them to seek to adopt a child. In February 2000 they adopted a little five-and-a-half-month old baby boy from Guatemala they named John when she was 49 & Brian 46 years old! So much joy! Strangely Joyce never told Brian about giving up her first son for adoption. Never sure how he would take it. But one day when John was three years old, as she did devotions God spoke to her heart – I want you to find your son. She went to the computer. Miraculously, He led her step-by-step and within 10 days she had found and spoke with her son. Less than two weeks later she says, “I met my sweet son Joe for the second time in my life. And he was everything I hoped and prayed he would be.” Brian had proved to be so welcoming in hearing of her oldest son.
TOTAL RESTORATION
Joyce continues to marvel at the goodness and grace of God. He totally restored her oldest son and family to her. John is doing remarkably well, is totally restored, a good student with a 3.5 gpa and is very articulate. If we have just a little bit of faith, He will do wonders. She says it could be that God healed John over two weeks so that man would exhaust all his efforts. God restores hope. People want to see a God who cares and is above all things. She thanks God for the role of adoption in her life, restoring Joe to her and bringing them John. He cares for the hopeless and the lost, and adopts us into His family. Joyce just wants people to know that God does the impossible, she says. Their story is slated to be made into a movie by Devon Franklin and 20th Century Fox.

The move, which was finalized several months ago, is one of the first for Curry’s burgeoning media career and one of the first to be revealed since the Golden State Warriors point guard officially launched his banner, Unanimous Media, earlier this year.
Unanimous, which has an overall film and TV deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment, is developing many of its own projects, but Curry couldn’t pass up getting involved with Breakthrough since it dovetailed with his own focus on faith and family-friendly material.
Based on a book by Joyce Smith titled The Impossible, Breakthrough tells the true story of how Joyce’s son, John Smith, fell through the ice and drowned, and was declared legally dead. A hour later, however, the basketball-loving 14-year-old was miraculously revived through the power of prayer…”

“Breakthrough” tells the true story of one of the most miraculous recoveries ever. John Smith was just 14 years old when he fell through an icy Missouri lake in 2015. After being rescued from the frigid waters, John was rushed to a local hospital, where, with no pulse for nearly 45 minutes, he was declared dead. But then something remarkable happened: He woke up. The incredible tale is being retold, Hollywood-style, in “Breakthrough,” starring Chrissy Metz and Josh Lucas.

Invaders, predators, barbarians – the Vikings are often portrayed merely as one-dimensional warriors whose achievements include little more than plundering and raiding. But from where did the Vikings originate and were they really violent, godless pagans? Here, Philip Parker explains the real history of the Viking world… “…Iceland became Christian to avoid a civil war. Competing pagan and Christian factions threatened to tear the Althing apart and dissolve Iceland into separate, religiously hostile, states. At the Althing’s meeting in the year 1000 the rival factions appealed to Iceland’s most important official, the lawspeaker Thorgeir Thorkelsson. As a pagan he might have been expected to favour the old gods but, after an entire day spent agonising over the decision, he concluded that henceforth all Icelanders would be Christian. A few exceptions were made – for example the eating of horsemeat, a favoured delicacy that was also associated with pagan sacrifices, was to be permitted…”

Vikings
Editors History.com “..From around A.D. 800 to the 11th century, a vast number of Scandinavians left their homelands to seek their fortunes elsewhere. These seafaring warriors–known collectively as Vikings or Norsemen (“Northmen”)–began by raiding coastal sites, especially undefended monasteries, in the British Isles. Over the next three centuries, they would leave their mark as pirates, raiders, traders and settlers on much of Britain and the European continent, as well as parts of modern-day Russia, Iceland, Greenland and Newfoundland…
..European peoples they confronted–was that they came from a foreign land, they were not “civilized” in the local understanding of the word and–most importantly–they were not Christian…
Early Viking Raids
In A.D. 793, an attack on the Lindisfarne monastery off the coast of Northumberland in northeastern England marked the beginning of the Viking Age. The culprits–probably Norwegians who sailed directly across the North Sea–did not destroy the monastery completely, but the attack shook the European religious world to its core. Unlike other groups, these strange new invaders had no respect for religious institutions such as the monasteries, which were often left unguarded and vulnerable near the shore. Two years later, Viking raids struck the undefended island monasteries of Skye and Iona (in the Hebrides) as well as Rathlin (off the northeast coast of Ireland). The first recorded raid in continental Europe came in 799, at the island monastery of St Philibert’s on Noirmoutier, near the estuary of the Loire River….

Alert Experts Warn Of Historic Widespread Flooding! Food Prices Skyrocket As 1000s Farms Destroyed

We have never seen catastrophic flooding like this, and the NOAA is now telling us that there will be more major flooding for at least two more months. On Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned that “historic, widespread flooding” would “continue through May”. More than 90 percent of the upper Midwest and Great Plains is currently covered by an average of 10.7 inches of snow, and all of that snow is starting to melt. That means that we are going to transition from one of the worst winters in modern history to a flood season that has already taken an apocalyptic turn for farmers all across America. At this moment, millions of acres of farmland are already underwater. Thousands of farmers are not going to be able to plant crops this year, and thousands of other farmers that have been financially ruined by the floods will never return to farming again. This is already the worst agricultural disaster in modern American history, and it is going to get a whole lot worse.

What is happening along the river banks of Nebraska is absolutely devastating and heartbreaking. These towns are being destroyed and severely affecting the people who call these places home. People, Cattle, and livestock being trapped without any way to get to them, homes being submerged by a rush of 10 foot water and 2 foot thick chunks of ice bigger than a truck. These are the same river banks I have had some of my most memorable hunting experiences on. Those properties are 100% under water right now.. I am partnering with the American RedCross of Nebraska and have set up a means and outlet through Whitetail Fit and GoFundMe for people to donate and help out however they can to get food, water and clothing to the 15+ shelters set up along the eastern border of Nebraska. This money will also be used to help rebuild these peoples lives. This is our community, our town and our State. I may not be able to do much on my own, but together and through the Whitetail Fit family, I’ve seen some pretty amazing things happen. I believe in the Hunting community, and the passion everyone has in their hearts to help when there are those who are helpless. According to Agriculture Secretary Sunny Purdue, there “may be as many as a million calves lost in Nebraska” due to the catastrophic flooding that has hit the state. This is not a rumor, this is not an exaggeration, and this is not based on any sort of speculation. This number comes to us directly from the top agriculture official in the entire country, and it means that the economic toll from the recent floods is far greater than most of us had anticipated. You can watch Purdue make this quote on Fox Business right here, and it is important to remember that this number is just for one state. It is hard to imagine what the final numbers will look like when the livestock losses for all of the states affected by the flooding are tallied up. This is already the worst agricultural disaster in modern American history, and the National Weather Service is telling us that there will be more catastrophic flooding throughout the middle portion of the nation for the next two months.

(28 Mar 2019) Residents in eastern Nebraska are beginning to clean up as floodwaters recede across the Midwest.
Ashland, Nebraska resident Larry Lindberg, who lives right along the Platte River, showed a water line that rose above his hip on his home’s garage.
Just north of Ashland, in Mead, a flooded water treatment plant at a Superfund site that stores radioactive waste and explosives was shut down for a few days. It is now back up and running.
The Environmental Protection Agency reported Wednesday that there were no releases of hazardous contaminants at any of eight toxic waste sites in flooded parts of Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa.
The EPA identified the Nebraska Ordnance Plant in Mead, and the Conservation Chemical Corporation site in Kansas City, Missouri, as heavily flooded Superfund sites that required the agency to take immediate action to prevent the spread of contaminated groundwater.
Two Iowa sites had some minor flooding but did not require the agency to immediately do anything. It plans to reassess once the floodwaters recede.

The teen, who has not been publicly identified, was treated for mild to moderate injuries at a local hospital and released, according to a statement from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office.
Students told KTLA the fight began when Riley asked the student to leave the classroom because he wasn’t wearing a proper uniform. The boy refused. One student began recording the spat and captured the teen hurling racial slurs at Riley, who is black.
“It was just back and forth, back and forth, and then the teacher just decided to throw a punch and that’s when everything happened,” one student told CBS.
Some students, parents and teachers defended Riley on social media — instead blaming the student for using racial slurs against him.
“We all may have mixed feelings about what happened. But please do know that this is not the first time that Mr. Riley is attacked; physically or verbally. He is a great person and a great teacher,” reads a description on the fundraising page.

About The Ingalls Family by Sarah S. Uthoff 111 Comments littlehouseontheprairie.com “..Charles Phillip Ingalls or “Pa” (1836-1902)
Charles had a wandering foot in all his various incarnations. In real life his family had long been farmers, moving several times while he was growing up in search of a better chance. Charles followed this same pattern with his own family after marrying Caroline Quiner, always in search of better financial opportunities, specifically a successful wheat farm. After many moves and attempts, with his family’s help Charles proved up his homestead, but due to health issues he retired from farming almost immediately afterward. Together Charles and Caroline built up one final home in De Smet, South Dakota. They set out to build their own farm. They had several failed attempts before finally making a last fresh start in Mansfield, Missouri. They were able to improve their farm slowly until they had a modestly successful farm of over 200 acres. Laura’s work sharing information to improve farm life led to a semi-regular career writing mostly magazine articles for the Missouri Ruralist. Her own ambitions and her daughter Rose’s prodding led her to write and publish a fictionalized account of her childhood in the Little House books. The process of creating the series and later answering her fan mail would be her big project for the rest of her life…”

Raw Video – 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick explains why he is refusing to stand during the National Anthem.
A timeline of Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest and the athletes who joined him By Mark Sandritter Updated Sep 25, 2017, 10:28am EDT sbnation.com “…Initially, Kaepernick was alone in his protest. And unnoticed. His protest didn’t come to light and gain national attention until the third preseason game. Since then, he’s continued on with his protest while being joined by several other NFL players, other professional, college and high school athletes.
Here is a complete timeline of Kaepernick’s protest and the other athletes who has followed suit.
Aug. 14 and Aug. 20 — Kaepernick goes unnoticed while sitting during the anthem
Kaepernick made headlines when he sat during the 49ers third preseason game, but he also sat during the first two games, according to Mike Garafolo of NFL Network. Kaepernick wasn’t in uniform and didn’t play during the first two games…”
Eric Reid: Why Colin Kaepernick and I Decided to Take a Knee By Eric Reid Sept. 25, 2017 nytimes.com “In early 2016, I began paying attention to reports about the incredible number of unarmed black people being killed by the police. The posts on social media deeply disturbed me, but one in particular brought me to tears: the killing of Alton Sterling in my hometown Baton Rouge, La. This could have happened to any of my family members who still live in the area. I felt furious, hurt and hopeless. I wanted to do something, but didn’t know what or how to do it. All I knew for sure is that I wanted it to be as respectful as possible.
A few weeks later, during preseason, my teammate Colin Kaepernick chose to sit on the bench during the national anthem to protest police brutality. To be honest, I didn’t notice at the time, and neither did the news media. It wasn’t until after our third preseason game on Aug. 26, 2016, that his protest gained national attention, and the backlash against him began…”

Trump aimed at NFL players not standing for the national anthem, McCourty and at least 15 Patriots teammates took a knee during the anthem prior to playing the Texans Sunday. Many fans booed the players in response and called for them to “stand up.” ..” Everything you need to know about NFL protests during the national anthem By Adam Stites Updated Oct 19, 2017, 11:37am EDT sbnation.com “..”This stand wasn’t for me. This is because I’m seeing things happen to people that don’t have a voice, people that don’t have a platform to talk and have their voices heard, and effect change. So I’m in the position where I can do that and I’m going to do that for people that can’t.”
His decision to sit during the national anthem drew criticism, though. Many felt and still feel it was disrespectful to the United States, its flag, and its military.
“I have great respect for the men and women that have fought for this country,” Kaepernick said. “I have family, I have friends that have gone and fought for this country. And they fight for freedom, they fight for the people, they fight for liberty and justice, for everyone. That’s not happening.
“People are dying in vain because this country isn’t holding their end of the bargain up, as far as giving freedom and justice, liberty to everybody. That’s something that’s not happening. I’ve seen videos, I’ve seen circumstances where men and women that have been in the military have come back and been treated unjustly by the country they fought have for, and have been murdered by the country they fought for, on our land. That’s not right.”..”

Trump Criticizes NFL for Not Forcing Players to Stand for National Anthem By SCOTT RAFFERTY rollingstone.com
President said football players are displaying “total disrespect for our great country” by protesting during “The Star-Spangled Banner” “..During Tuesday’s meeting with owners and players, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the league didn’t ask for a commitment from players to stand for the national anthem. Instead, Goodell explained, “We spent today talking about the issues that players have been trying to bring attention to – issues to make our communities better.”
In response, Donald Trump criticized the NFL via Twitter for not forcing players to stand for the national anthem, writing they are displaying “total disrespect for our great country” by protesting during the national anthem…”
Carla Malony, who was secretary of the GOP’s Beaver County branch, apologised for the series of posts she made on the social network last year.
Although it is unclear exactly when the comments were made, they appeared to be in reaction to players kneeling in protest as the national anthem played before NFL games.
In one post, Ms Malony described American footballers taking part in the gesture to protest cases of police brutality in the US as “over paid ignorant blacks”, suggesting they should “go to Africa”.
When another Facebook user commented: “Go Steelers,” in reference to the Pittsburgh Steelers NFL franchise, the GOP activist launched into another racially-charged tirade.
“Steelers are now just as bad as the rest of the over paid baboons. You respect your flag, country and our national atnthem (sic),” she wrote.
“Stop watching, or going to a game and paying for over priced food, water and tickets. Lets see how the baboons get paid when white people stop paying their salaries.”
The Beaver County Republican Committee said in a statement that it had accepted Ms Maloney’s resignations from both of her roles in the party and denounced her comments.
“The views expressed in her posts are abhorrent and have no place in reasonable public discourse,” the committee said.
The NFL national anthem protests first began in 2016, when then-San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick took a knee to highlight police violence against minority groups and racial inequalities in America.
Since then, hundreds of players have refused to observe the anthem at American football games and in a variety of other US sports.
The protests have drawn the ire of president Donald Trump, who last year called on NFL franchise owners to fire players who refused to stand during the national anthem.
From the beginning of the 2018 NFL season, due to start on Thursday, players will be required by league rules to observe the anthem on the field or stay in the dressing room.
In her resignation statement, Ms Malony apologised for her remarks about the protests, which she said had been “in poor taste.”
“I apologise for my distasteful, inappropriate and insensitive social media posts,” she added.
“Those that know me know that I come from a diverse family that represents modern America.
“I know my posts and comments were disrespectful to not only the people that I love, but families across the country.
“I know I am a better person than this and, as I step away from these public positions, I will work to show everyone who I truly am.”..”

Trump Feeding “Tear Away” Immigrant Kids to America’s “Elite Pedophiles” By Gordon Duff, Senior Editor – June 17, 2018 veteranstoday.com “..The “elites,” as they love calling themselves, who own the Federal Reserve, run Washington and London, who start our wars, loot our economy, run our media, control our lives, live on a diet of ritual sexual abuse, sex hormones and amphetamines…

In a Friday statement slamming the policy as “a shocking violation of the spirit of the Gospel,” the United Methodist Church registered its dissent to Sessions’ use of the Bible to defend the separations: Jesus is our way, our truth, our life. The Christ we follow would have no part in ripping children from their mothers’ arms or shunning those fleeing violence. It is unimaginable that faith leaders even have to say that these policies are antithetical to the teachings of Christ. Christian sacred texts ….”
Trump blames Democrats for a law that separates undocumented immigrant children from their families. Some Democrats blame Trump’s administration for losing track of nearly 1,500 immigrant kids.

She and her daughter had just fled the most dangerous city in the world, San Pedro Sula, Honduras, where the two biggest criminal gangs, which have memberships across the region in the tens of thousands, fight with automatic weapons. The city has become a war zone, with a murder rate of 193 per 100,000 (New York City’s rate is 5.1). Angelica’s father died in gang-related violence a couple of years ago. “In some neighborhoods, people are abandoning their homes from fear,” she said. “The gangs are even murdering 8-year-old kids who will not join them.” …
Americans, especially young Americans, probably know more about the 1994 genocide in Rwanda than they do about how their own government funded murderous right-wing dictatorships in Central America back in the 1980s. The Reagan administration’s violent and immoral policy included $5 billion in aid to the military/landowner alliance in El Salvador, which prolonged an awful conflict in which some 75,000 people died—a toll proportionally equivalent to the casualty rate in the American Civil War. But once shaky peace agreements were signed in the 1990s, the United States walked away, leaving the shattered region to rebuild on its own. ..
The very name of one of the giant criminal gangs—18th Street, or Calle 18—reveals the origins of the current crisis. Eighteenth Street is not in San Pedro Sula, or in San Salvador, or in any of the other Central American cities torn apart by gang warfare. Eighteenth Street is actually in Los Angeles, where the gang and its rival, the Mara Salvatrucha, were born among young Salvadorans who had been displaced by the civil war in the 1980s. After the United States started deporting gang members, they arrived back in Central America, some barely speaking Spanish and knowing only how to do one thing: grab the weapons the region was already awash in and start killing. During the decade-long civil war, family and community life had weakened, so the newly arrived gangs partly filled a vacuum…
Here in McAllen, the community center of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church has become a relief station for adults with children who are pouring across the border in the Rio Grande Valley. Children who are by themselves do not come here; they are held in the overcrowded Border Patrol detention centers until a relative who is already in the United States sends them funds for an air ticket to join them, pending a resolution of their immigration case. (Roughly 90 percent of the Central Americans already have a family member in the United States.) ..”
Why Central Americans are fleeing their violent homelands for the US By Danika Fears and Lorena Mongelli April 13, 2017 | 1:26am | Updated nypost.com “..n 2016, El Salvador’s murder rate was 81.2 per 100,000 inhabitants — down from 104 in 2015, the highest in the world. Honduras’ murder rate was 59 last year, while Guatemala’s was 27.3, dropping from a high of 46.5 in 2009.
“There’s no such thing as people going out jogging there,” Ana Quintana, a policy analyst at the Heritage Foundation, said of Honduras. “There are 24-hour funeral homes. It’s incredibly sad.”
Civil wars rocked El Salvador and Guatemala until the mid-1990s, leaving them vulnerable to transnational crime outfits — like MS-13, which was created by Salvadorans who fled to LA.
Drug trafficking from South America and Mexico — in which some of the gangs have become involved — has also contributed to the bloodshed.
In 2014, US officials said 80 percent of drug flows into America pass through routes in Central America…”
Deporting people made Central America’s gangs. More deportation won’t help. By Daniel Denvir July 20, 2017 washingtonpost.com ‘..“MS-13 is one of the most vicious criminal gangs in this country today,” said Attorney General Jeff Sessions. “As I said when I visited Long Island after these murders took place in April, MS-13’s motto may be ‘kill, rape and control,’ but the Department of Justice’s motto is justice for victims and consequences for criminals.” In April, Sessions made a stop on his immigrants-are-killing-Americans tour in Long Island, where he went further into his view of transnational gangs…
In reality, it is U.S. foreign policy and the very sort of deportation policies Sessions embraces that have created the “horrific violence” and “lawlessness” he expresses concern about, and there’s no reason to believe that continuing these policies will do anything other than cause more harm….
The gang Sessions pinpointed, Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), was founded in Los Angeles, as was its rival, Barrio 18. Many of the youths who formed MS-13, and who joined its rival Barrio 18 (initially formed by Mexicans) had fled El Salvador as refugees as civil war raged between 1980 and 1992. At the time, the right-wing military government in El Salvador was backed by President Ronald Reagan’s administration. All in all, the U.S. spent billions of dollars on its dirty war against left-wing rebels of the Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front, or FLMN. Wars were also ripping apart Guatemala, where the U.S.-backed military committed genocide against indigenous people, and Nicaragua, where the U.S. supported a Contra army that sought to overthrow the left-wing Sandinista government because it had dared to depose the right-wing Somoza family dictatorship…
In fiscal 2014, the Border Patrol apprehended almost 137,000 unaccompanied minors and individuals traveling with their families, the majority part of a new refugee exodus from Central America to seek asylum from violent conflicts between gangs and governments in their deeply impoverished native lands…
. In 1996, President Bill Clinton signed the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility law, which made it far easier for the government to deport people convicted of certain crimes, including relatively minor ones and crimes committed by lawful permanent residents. At the same time, the INS Violent Gang Task Force, created in 1992, was working with local police to target immigrant gang members for deportation. In 2005, ICE’s Operation Community Shield was launched to target MS-13…
..Since taking office, President Trump has proclaimed that his government is “actually liberating towns” from the gang’s clutches and falsely claimed that he has deported half of the gang’s U.S.-based membership. He has blamed “weak illegal immigration policies” under President Barack Obama for allowing the gang to spread, calling it “a serious problem” that “we never did anything about.” In fact, deporting alleged gang members had been a bipartisan priority for three presidential administrations. And for presidents from both parties, the emphasis on gangs has served the same purpose: fomenting public anxiety over crime and foreigners in the service of a system that mostly deports immigrants who have been convicted of no violent crime…
The tragic upshot is that, thanks to flashy headlines about international gang violence, people are primed to support the same sort of policies that created this spiraling crisis in the first place: deporting Central Americans, refugees and alleged gang members alike, while funding law-and-order crackdowns and business-friendly economic reforms in the region that can only make things worse. We are not importing Central American problems. Rather, it is the U.S. that has exported violence, time and again, to Central America.”

Commentary: Time magazine’s major mistake on the crying-girl cover Time magazine’s cover for July 2, 2018. (Time)
Aaron Blake chicagotribune.com/ “..Unfortunately, they made their most iconic image something that wasn’t a family being separated — and ultimately undermines their cause.
The photo of a nearly 2-year-old Honduran girl crying as her mother is being patted down quickly went viral. It also has been used for a Facebook fundraiser to raise more than $18 million to help reunite families that have been separated. And the whole thing culminated in its placement in a photo illustration on the cover of Time magazine. The image on the July 2 issue features the girl against a red background, with President Donald Trump towering over her and the words, “Welcome to America.”
The implication was clear: This was a girl who, like 2,300 other children, was being separated from her mother. Time and many others made a decision to suggest that this was an example of Trump uprooting our American ideals.
But that’s not what it was. As The Washington Post’s Samantha Schmidt and Kristine Phillips report, the girl’s father says the child and her mother were never separated. U.S. Customs and Border Patrol confirmed it, as did the Honduran deputy foreign minister.
The image is a sad one, but it is of a rather standard occurrence at the border: A mother and her daughter attempted to immigrate illegally and were apprehended. The mother, in fact, had tried this before and was deported in 2013. The photo says virtually nothing about Trump’s now-aborted policy. In fact, it’s an example of how not all young children were separated from their parents…”

Under President Barack Obama, the US has deported almost two million undocumented immigrants, more than any of his predecessors.
Before being kicked out of the US, most of these people will spend time locked up in a detention centre. Some have criminal convictions, but the majority are detained on immigration charges.
A little-known federal law enacted in 2006 ensures that a minimum of 34,000 undocumented immigrants must be held on every single day. Private companies run most of the centres.
The BBC’s Franz Strasser went to Georgia to investigate America’s $2bn (£1.2bn) detention and deportation industry.

18-year-old U.S. citizen detained by border officials said conditions were so bad he lost 26 pounds, almost self-deported BY CAITLIN O’KANE

Galicia said conditions were so bad, he considered self-deporting just to get out — even though he has a birth certificate proving he’s American-born…
During the 23 days he was in the custody of U.S. Customs and Border Patrol, Galicia was not allowed to shower, he told The Dallas Morning News, which first reported his story.
The teen said he lost 26 pounds during his time in the immigrant detention center, and said officers didn’t provide him with enough food. He was crammed into an overcrowded holding area with 60 other men. They slept on the floor with aluminum-foil blankets — some even had to sleep in the bathroom area, he said…
“It was inhumane how they treated us. It got to the point where I was ready to sign a deportation paper just to not be suffering there anymore. I just needed to get out of there,” he told the newspaper. “It’s one thing to see these conditions on TV and in the news. It’s another to go through them.”

On Aug. 10 and 11, Jewish organizations are coordinating #CloseTheCamps events on Tisha B’Av, a Jewish day of mourning.
The Torah commands Jewish people to love the stranger as one of their own, and the majority of Jews in the U.S. have an immigration story, said Carin Mrotz, executive director of Jewish Community Action (JCA), which organizes Jewish Minnesotans for social change.
“That story also involves not being welcome. … Often in moments of history when we have not been welcome, we have come anyway,” she said. “So we have all of these textual but also historical and cultural and traditional reasons why we tend to prioritize immigrant rights.”..
Mia Freiberg, a 25-year-old Minneapolis activist who is also helping coordinate the event, has long been aware of border issues, having grown up in San Diego. And social justice has always been a strong tenet of the Jewish community, she said: There’s a Jewish experience of being part of a diaspora and a persecuted minority group.
Questions about comparing immigration policies to the Holocaust are beside the point, Freiberg said.
“Compare it to the Japanese internment camps of World War II; compare it to whatever state-sanctioned violence,” she said. “The fact that we have to question whether or not it’s as bad as one of the most publicized mass genocides in the history of the world — that bar is too high. And I think it is a distraction from … the fact that people are dying, the fact that innocent people are in cages because they’re just trying to find a better life.”..

Mr Ramos-Gomez was set to be released from jail after pleading guilty to a misdemeanour trespassing charge, but was instead turned over to ICE by the Kent County Sheriff’s Department, which reportedly has a contract with the federal immigration enforcement agency.

Minnesota Vikings Players Credit the Lord for ‘Miracle’ Playoff Victory: ‘That Was God’ By Samuel Smith , CP Reporter | Jan 15, 2018 1:04 PM christianpost.com
QB: Winning Important Playoff Game Not Bigger Moment Than When I Accepted Christ “..Minnesota Vikings players are crediting the power of the Lord after they miraculously escaped Sunday’s NFL divisional playoff game against the New Orleans Saints with a victory that puts them one win away from reaching Super Bowl LII, which will be held in their own stadium…
“I ran the route, my QB gave me a great throw. God took care of the rest,” Diggs, a former standout at the University of Maryland, told ESPN after the game. “If you watch the play, a guy ran into another guy. I give all the glory to God. I give him the praise on this praise Sunday.”
“I still don’t know what just happened. I really don’t,” Diggs added when asked what he was thinking when he scored the game-winning touchdown. “I give it to God because without Him nothing is possible and I wouldn’t be here.”
Fellow Vikings wide receiver Adam Thielen, a Minnesota native, agreed after the game and remarked, “That was God.”
“That play right there was God,” Thielen said, according to Sports Illustrated.
The 29-year-old quarterback, Keenum, who had a breakout season in 2017 after struggling through early parts of his career and will now be quarterbacking in the NFC Championship game, also praised the Lord.
“God is so good,” Keenum told Fox in a televised interview after the game. “It’s probably the third best day of my life; the day I gave my life to Jesus Christ, the day I married my wife, and probably this one.”..”

Keenum wasn’t the planned starter in Minnesota this year, but he’s hit his stride under center with a team that’s rallied around his underdog mentality. And, through it all, Keenum has relied on the his family to keep him positive. Here’s everything you need to know about the QB’s support system:..
4. Keenum Credits Family & Faith for his Success…
It’s been a challenging road to postseason glory for Keenum – he was recruited by just one Division I program out of high school, set a handful of records at Houston, but was sidelined with an ACL injury and went undrafted out of college. Still, the quarterback never lost his faith or the support of his family. In fact, throughout his season with the Vikings, Keenum has been quick to point out how important both are to his success on the gridiron.
He told Pioneer Press:
That’s why I became a Christian — being around Christian athletes through FCA. I’m not playing for the name on the back of my jersey, I’m playing to glorify God. He’s given me talents, and I’m trying to maximize those talents however I can.
There have been plenty of detractors throughout his career, but Keenum’s family hasn’t shied away from voicing their support. His father, Steve, told Pioneer Press, “He’s a good man that loves his Lord and loves his wife, loves kids and he loves to play football. I wouldn’t play golf with him, and I wouldn’t hunt with him, because he’ll make you look bad.”

Mike Zimmer: I Don’t Know What To Say | Vikings vs Saints
Eight years later, the Vikings can get some revenge against the New Orleans Saints.
With the Saints defeating Carolina 31-26 in a wild-card game Sunday at home, they advanced to face the Vikings in a divisional playoff at 3:40 p.m. next Sunday at U.S. Bank Stadium. It will be the first playoff meeting between the teams since New Orleans defeated Minnesota 31-28 in overtime in the 2009 NFC championship game.
The Vikings are the No. 2 seed in the NFC while the Saints are No. 4. The teams met in the Sept. 11 season opener, with Minnesota winning 29-19 at U.S. Bank Stadium.
The Vikings have a 2-1 playoff series edge over New Orleans, winning a wild-card game in 1987 and a divisional game in 2000. But the Saints won the most important game between the teams on Jan. 24, 2010 at the Superdome and two weeks later beat Indianapolis 31-17 in Super Bowl XLIV.
Afterward, many on the Vikings alleged Saints players were trying to take quarterback Brett Favre out of the game. In 2011, the NFL initiated the “Bountygate” investigation.
In 2012, the league ruled there was a system in place in which Saints players were illegally paid bonuses for injuring opposing players. Penalties included coach Sean Payton and then-defensive coordinator Gregg Williams suspended for the entire 2012 season.
The only Vikings player remaining from the 2009 NFC championship game is defensive end Brian Robison. When asked last week about the possibility of rematch against the Saints, he said, “I’m not worried about that. This is 2017. That’s a long time ago.”
The Vikings went 13-3 during the regular season and won the NFC North while the Saints went 11-5 and won the NFC South. New Orleans didn’t look like a playoff-caliber team in the loss to open the season at Minnesota and started 0-2 before winning eight straight games.
