After Two Wars, Standing Rock is the First Time I Served the American People by Will Griffin Published on
Sunday, October 30, 2016 by Common Dreams commondreams.org
‘I’ve been on the wrong side of history’
“…I was in Iraq when President Bush announced the “surge” in January 2007. I was in Afghanistan when President Obama announced the “surge” in December 2009. But it wasn’t until I visited Standing Rock in October 2016 when I actually served the American people. This time, instead of fighting for corporate interests, I was fighting for the people.
I traveled to Standing Rock with a small group of members from Veterans For Peace (VFP). VFP has had a continued presence at Standing Rock for months now, rotating members in and out. Two VFP members, Tarak Kauff and Matthew Hoh, were arrested on Oct. 10, Indigenous People’s Day, while peacefully protecting (not protesting) the water. We were also joined by VFP members Ellen Davidson, Sam Adams, Richard Gilchrist, Martin Bates, Michael Sullivan, Ann Wright, and drone whistleblower Cian Westmoreland.
Fellow veteran Matt Hoh and I agreed the camp was a reminder of Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) in Iraq and Afghanistan, without the mortars or rockets blowing up everywhere…
Matt and I also agreed that after our military “service” and multiple deployments to two wars, this was the first time we served the American people. After going to a few nonviolent direct action protests against the Black Snake, we realized what it actually meant to stand by the American people and fight in their interests. We suddenly had this feeling of honor, something we never had from our deployments to Iraq or Afghanistan.
We agreed that the only “people” we served overseas fighting were the likes of Halliburton, KBR, AECOM, DynCorp, Raytheon, Environmental Chemical, and so many more. We know that our own government lied to us. We know that the world is not a safer place than it was before the United States illegally occupied Iraq and Afghanistan; we understand that militaries don’t bring peace. Looking into the eyes of the police at Standing Rock, we saw ourselves.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. said, “Peace is not merely the absence of war but the presence of justice.” That’s what we were fighting for at Standing Rock, peace and justice.
The militarized police forces on the ground weren’t keeping the peace or protecting justice, they were protecting corporate interests. The police were blocking peace and obstructing justice on behalf of corporations, greedy bankers and investors. During my 11 days there, I saw local law enforcement, out-of-jurisdiction police forces, private security forces, and the North Dakota National Guard—all on behalf of the corporations and the state, not the people. They arrested the people and protected the construction equipment.
We saw journalists being attacked and warrants issued for their arrests just for holding a microphone and interviewing people. We saw police forces using military-grade equipment that Matt and I used in combat zones overseas. We saw the infringement of constitutional rights such as the right to assemble. But most important, we saw Native Americans courageously continue to defend their land and people from a genocidal 500-year war against the state and corporations alike…
That’s why I joined the military; to provide a selfless service to my country. That myth has been shattered. After two wars, PTSD and moral injury, I’ve come to realize I’ve been on the wrong side of history.”

5 Reasons the Iraq War Was Not a Mistake by Joel B. Pollak19 May 2015 breitbart.com
“..2. An American force in the Middle East would increase pressure on Iran. Removing Saddam Hussain meant removing a threat to the Iranian regime. But putting hundreds of thousands of American troops on Iran’s western border–along with those already in Afghanistan to the east–meant posing a much more potent threat to the regime. That is why Iran temporarily slowed its nuclear program after 2003–and why the Iranian people found the courage to rise in 2009.
3. Freeing the people of Iraq was, and is, a worthy goal. Just a few years ago, with American and allied troops still in Iraq in significant numbers, the sectarian violence and terrorism that had plagued the country for years had begun to slow down. The Iraqi people began to enjoy some semblance of order, of democracy, and of liberty. Instead of staying in Iraq to guide and protect that process–as Obama had promised to do in 2008–Obama abandoned the Iraqi people.
4. International law means nothing unless it is backed up by the will to enforce it. Saddam Hussein defied international law repeatedly: He used WMD against his own people; he invaded his neighbors; he sponsored terrorism. And he did it because he had no fear of facing the consequences. International law, flawed though it is, is a necessary and stabilizing institution–and needs enforcement, even (especially) when global institutions are too corrupt to enforce it.
5. There is potential for freedom in the region–with American leadership. The fall of Saddam Hussein inspired the Lebanese people to rise up against Syrian occupation, and planted the seeds of what later became the Arab Spring. If American leadership had remained strong, that process might have been a positive one. (Certainly Syria would not have become a killing field.) The Middle East may never be fertile soil for democracy, but it can certainly be freer than it is today.
There are, of course, excellent arguments against the war. The best is that it was carried out in crisis management mode, without any real attempt to grapple with the strategic challenge of Iran (or extremism in other nations, such as Saudi Arabia and Pakistan).
That argument still stands. But it has nothing to do with the question of whether Iraq had WMD…”
The CIA Just Declassified the Document That Supposedly Justified the Iraq Invasion By Jason Leopold March 19, 2015 | 12:10 pm news.vice.com
“..The NIE also restores another previously unknown piece of “intelligence”: a suggestion that Iraq was possibly behind the letters laced with anthrax sent to news organizations and senators Tom Daschle and Patrick Leahy a week after the 9/11 attacks. The attacks killed five people and sickened 17 others…
According to the latest figures compiled by Iraq Body Count, to date more than 200,000 Iraqi civilians have been killed, although other sources say the casualties are twice as high. More than 4,000 US soldiers have been killed in Iraq, and tens of thousands more have been injured and maimed. The war has cost US taxpayers more than $800 billion.
In an interview with VICE founder Shane Smith, Obama said the rise of the Islamic State was a direct result of the disastrous invasion.
“ISIL is a direct outgrowth of al Qaeda in Iraq that grew out of our invasion,” Obama said. “Which is an example of unintended consequences. Which is why we should generally aim before we shoot.”..”

“Tom Cotton, the Iraq war veteran from Arkansas turned Republican senator, has a message to fellow soldiers: ‘We should not be ashamed of the war we conducted in Iraq.’
Leading Republicans are sticking by the Iraq war, declining to follow the Democrats into full retreat and regret.
Cotton, while conceding that there are lessons to be learned from the conflict and that it might have been handled differently in retrospect, maintains that President George W. Bush made the best decision he could at the time based on the available intelligence about Saddam Hussein’s presumed stockpile of weapons of mass destruction.””
Christopher Hitchens on Reasons for the Iraq War, Justifications, Military, and Media (2005) , youtube.com
“Published on Oct 14, 2013
The rationale for the Iraq War (i.e. the 2003 invasion of Iraq and subsequent hostilities) has been a contentious issue since the Bush administration began actively pressing for military intervention in Iraq in late 2001. The primary rationalization for the Iraq War was articulated by a joint resolution of the U.S. Congress known as the Iraq Resolution.
The U.S. stated that the intent was to remove “a regime that developed and used weapons of mass destruction, that harbored and supported terrorists, committed outrageous human rights abuses, and defied the just demands of the United Nations and the world”. Additional reasons have been suggested: “to change the Middle East so as to deny support for militant Islam by pressuring or transforming the nations and transnational systems that support it.” For the invasion of Iraq the rationale was “the United States relied on the authority of UN Security Council Resolutions 678 and 687 to use all necessary means to compel Iraq to comply with its international obligations”.
In the lead-up to the invasion, the U.S. and UK emphasized the argument that Saddam Hussein was developing “weapons of mass destruction” and thus presented a threat to his neighbors, to the U.S., and to the world community. The U.S. stated “on November 8, 2002, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted Resolution 1441. All fifteen members of the Security Council agreed to give Iraq a final opportunity to comply with its obligations and disarm or face the serious consequences of failing to disarm. The resolution strengthened the mandate of the UN Monitoring and Verification Commission (UNMOVIC) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), giving them authority to go anywhere, at any time and talk to anyone in order to verify Iraq’s disarmament.” Throughout late 2001, 2002, and early 2003, the Bush Administration worked to build a case for invading Iraq, culminating in then Secretary of State Colin Powell’s February 2003 address to the Security Council. Shortly after the invasion, the Central Intelligence Agency, Defense Intelligence Agency, and other intelligence agencies largely discredited evidence related to Iraqi weapons as well as links to Al-Qaeda, and at this point the Bush and Blair Administrations began to shift to secondary rationales for the war, such as the Hussein government’s human rights record and promoting democracy in Iraq. Opinion polls showed that the population of nearly all countries opposed a war without UN mandate, and that the view of the United States as a danger to world peace had significantly increased. UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan described the war as illegal, saying in a September 2004 interview that it was “not in conformity with the Security Council.”
Accusations of faulty evidence and alleged shifting rationales became the focal point for critics of the war, who charge that the Bush Administration purposely fabricated evidence to justify an invasion it long planned to launch. Supporters of the war claim that the threat from Iraq and Saddam Hussein was real and that this has later been established. The U.S. led the effort for “the redirection of former Iraqi weapons of mass destruction (WMD) scientists, technicians and engineers to civilian employment and discourage emigration of this community from Iraq.”
Other critics have noted that the Iraq War has several similarities with the Korean War and Vietnam War.
The United States officially declared its combat role in Iraq over on August 31, 2010, although several thousand troops remained in the country until all American troops were withdrawn from Iraq by December 2011; between that time American troops also engaged in combat with Iraqi insurgents…”

The Third Terrorist: The Middle East Connection to the Oklahoma City Bombing Paperback – July 27, 2008 by Jayna Davis .amazon.com
“..In this alarming book, reporter Jayna Davis tells of her amazing journey leading from the smoking rubble of the Murrah Federal Building to the sleazy haunts of John Doe #2, the mysterious Middle East suspect who the Justice Department was at first desperate to find?then insisted never existed.
With a reporter’s practiced skill, Jayna Davis unscrambles the convoluted and distorted facts of the Oklahoma City bombing to present a compelling case that proves Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols did not act alone and in fact worked in tandem with Middle East connections that lead directly to Saddam Hussein’s personal army.
Ten years after the tragic April 19 bombing, this revised edition of the controversial book that captured the attention of the 9/11 Commission offers new information and a new afterword that covers the Iraq War, the verdict in the Nichols state murder trial, and recent confirmation of Al-Qaeda General Al-Zawahiri’s visit to OKC to approve the bombing…”

“…Depleted uranium is the garbage left from producing enriched uranium for nuclear weapons and energy plants. It is 60 percent as radioactive as natural uranium. The U.S. has an estimated 1.5 billion pounds of it, sitting in hazardous waste storage sites across the country. Meaning it is plentiful and cheap as well as highly effective.
Reed says he unknowingly breathed DU dust while living with his unit in Samawah, Iraq. He was med-evaced out in July 2003, nearly unable to walk because of lightning-strike pains from herniated discs in his spine. Then began a strange series of symptoms he’d never experienced in his previously healthy life.
Then the medic from their unit showed up. He too, was suffering. That made eight sick soldiers from the 442nd Military Police, an Army National Guard unit made up of mostly cops and correctional officers from the New York area.
Tests come up positive, but …
Reed, Gerard Matthew, Raymond Ramos, Hector Vega, Augustin Matos, Anthony Yonnone, Jerry Ojeda and Anthony Phillip all have depleted uranium in their urine, according to tests done in December 2003, while they bounced for months between Walter Reed and New Jersey’s Fort Dix medical center, seeking relief that never came…

Saddam Hussein should have been left to run Iraq, says CIA officer who interrogated him By Ishaan Tharoor December 16 at 12:44 PM washingtonpost.com
“Both President Obama and President-elect Donald Trump believe the United States never should have invaded Iraq in 2o03 (or, at least, Trump claims he now does). The war in Iraq and its chaotic aftermath in many ways prefigure the present moment in the Middle East; it triggered a sectarian unraveling that now haunts both Iraq and Syria and looms large in the minds of an Obama administration wary of further intervention in the region’s conflicts.
In a new book coming out this month, John Nixon, a former CIA officer who interrogated Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein after he was captured by coalition forces in December 2003, details his encounter with the toppled despot and the varied discussions that followed. Early on, Hussein warned that the occupation of Iraq wouldn’t be as much of a “cakewalk” as Washington’s neoconservatives assumed at the time. From an excerpt published on Time magazine’s website:
Nixon now reckons Hussein had a point and that a ruthless strongman like him was necessary to “maintain Iraq’s multi-ethnic state” and keep both Sunni extremism and the power of Shiite-led Iran, a Hussein foe, at bay…”
When I interrogated Saddam, he told me: “You are going to fail. You are going to find that it is not so easy to govern Iraq.” When I told him I was curious why he felt that way, he replied: “You are going to fail in Iraq because you do not know the language, the history, and you do not understand the Arab mind.”..”
Bush, Blair and the Lies That Justified the Illegal Iraq War Jul 6 2016 By Robin Andersen fair.org
‘..Of three possible justifications, two were dismissed. Self-defense was not plausible, as British Foreign Secretary Jack Straw argued: “The case was thin. Saddam was not threatening his neighbors, and his WMD capacity was less than that of Libya, North Korea or Iran.” Nor would humanitarian intervention make the case: Saddam was not engaged in genocide. The foreign secretary solved the puzzle when he said: “We should work up a plan for an ultimatum to Saddam to allow back in the UN weapons inspectors. This would also help with the legal justification for the use of force.”…
This case illustrates that what journalists know and understand is something quite different from what they actually report. For the most part, the known and the reported are two very different narratives. With a “nothing new” defense, reporters and editors are making astonishing admissions of complicity and redefining the role of journalism. Admitting to understanding at the time that justifications for war were a ruse, yet not challenging such claims, leaves them not only complicit, but compelling actors in promoting war…

http://www.democracynow.org — In 2003, the legendary television host Phil Donahue was fired from his prime-time MSNBC talk show during the run-up to the U.S. invasion of Iraq. “…Damning archive footage shows contradictory speeches by US Secretary of State Colin Powell and National Security Adviser Condoleeza Rice. In a lengthy address to the UN Security Council on February 5, 2003, Powell solemnly declares that Iraq is in possession of vast stockpiles of weapons of mass destruction and is involved in an elaborate campaign to conceal weapons materials and manufacturing facilities. However, two years earlier Powell and Condoleeza Rice claim the opposite. Speaking in Cairo on February 24, 2001, seven months before 9/11, Powell categorically declares: “He [Saddam Hussein] has not developed any significant capability with respect to weapons of mass destruction. He is unable to project conventional power against his neighbours.” Rice repeats this in July 2001 when she tells US television that the Iraqi military has not been rebuilt since the 1991 conflict.

How Mercenaries Work science.howstuffworks.com
“..The reasons for using mercenaries have changed over the years. In ancient times, mercenaries were a necessity. Standing armies weren’t available, so rulers had to look elsewhere for soldiers after they exhausted their supply of able-bodied citizens available to fight.
For example, the Hundred Years’ War, which lasted from 1337 to 1453, took its toll on the English and French armies. As the prolonged war grew in dimension, so did the number of mercenaries. Edward of Woodstock, also known as the Black Prince, made good use of mercenaries to carry out a method of warfare known as chevauchée. In chevauchée, small groups of mounted soldiers stormed through a territory, burning and pillaging everything in their path. Chevauchée was very effective, and it made being a mercenary a lucrative profession. Soldiers from all over Europe flocked to France to get their share of the loot, which included both salary and whatever they could plunder.
As a result of the conflict in Africa and the unsavory mercenary activity it inspired, the international community strongly discouraged the use of mercenaries. Countries continued to hire foreign soldiers, but they exerted much more control. They also limited the activities of these soldiers to supporting roles only, freeing the regular army to focus on dangerous or mission-critical activities. Today, several companies exist to provide this new breed of mercenary. They are known as private military companies, or PMCs. On the next page, we’ll examine PMCs more closely. ..”

…3. Contracting may be the new American Way of War
“Why did the US, with the world’s most powerful military, need contractors? Because the All Volunteer Force could not recruit enough American’s to sustain two “long wars.” In 2002, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the Iraq War would last: “Five days or five weeks or five months, but it certainly isn’t going to last any longer than that.” When it didn’t, policy makers faced ugly choices. They could withdraw and cede the fight to al Qaeda. They could have a Vietnam-like draft to fill the ranks. Or they could contract out the difference. They went with contractors. In Iraq, 50% of the US force was contracted. In Afghanistan it was 70%. In WW2, it was only 10%. Is contracting America’s new way of war? It’s a fair question.
4. Most contractors who fight for America aren’t even American
When I was in the industry, I worked alongside people from all over the world: Mexico, Ghana, Australia, Canada and so forth. Private military companies are just like any other multinational corporation: they recruit globally. They also pay people different wages. For example, a specialforces soldier from Honduras with similar training and background as me would get paid much less. Just like shirt sweat shops around the world, the private military industry looks for cheap labor….

‘White Helmets’ — pawns for U.S. militarism By Sara Flounders posted on September 21, 2016 workers.org
“..NBC News praised the featured group as “Angels on the Front Line.” The Washington Post, New York Times and Wall Street Journal sang the movie’s praises and White Helmets’ “selfless, humanitarian role.”
The White Helmets defines itself as unpaid, unarmed first responders in Syria, claims 3,000 members and alleges it is a Syrian Civil Defense group. It claims to have saved 40,000, even 60,000 lives in Syria, by rescuing survivors from bombsites.
Most claims about the White Helmets are unverified self-promotion on social media. Interviews with and media coverage of the grouping show desperate appeals for an increase in U.S./NATO military action in Syria — not peace and reconciliation. New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and other journalists have quoted its calls for a no-fly zone as a “humanitarian” option.
The much-hyped White Helmets is not a Syrian organization, nor was it created by Syrians, nor is it educational. It is a U.S.-British creation. Former British Army officer James Le Mesurier, self-described as a British “security” specialist, founded it. At Least 2,000 Veterans Arrive at Standing Rock to Protest Dakota Pipeline By Michael Edison Hayden Catherine Thorbecke EVAN SIMON
Dec 4, 2016, 2:29 PM ET abcnews.go.com
“.. Chicago native David Hulse, 34, a Navy veteran who served in Iraq told ABC News that he decided at the last minute to join the protests, describing his involvement as “not a mission of war, but a mission of peace.”
“Seeing so many veterans show up,” Hulse said. “Out here, it’s brotherhood.” ..
Among the veterans are some high-profile names, including U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Democrat of Hawaii, who gained prominence when she left the Democratic National Committee to campaign for Sen. Bernie Sanders during his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination this year. Gabbard has frequently voiced support for the Dakota Access protest movement over social media. ..”
The band of US veterans who stood with protesters at Standing Rock have announced their next stop Written by Lila MacLellan December 07, 2016 qz.com
“…To the nation’s surprise, a day after 2,000 veterans and first responders appeared out of nowhere to support the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline, the US Army Corps of Engineers effectively shut down the project. Now that same veterans group has announced plans to take their army for social justice on the road, giving hope to environmentalists and peace activists everywhere.
The presence of the veterans heightened the dramatic tension in what was largely seen as a noble battle between a small group of Native Americans and environmentalists against heavily armed police. During the course of the protests there were several high-profile clashes, including some in which police used rubber bullets and tear gas on activists. One night the police turned a water cannon on men and women despite sub-freezing temperatures. Opponents of the oil pipeline had spent months working to derail its construction because its planned route would cross within a half-mile of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation border. A breach would have put the local water supply at risk….
Now the leaders of the veterans group have announced plans to take their “peaceful, unarmed militia” to Flint, Michigan, where their presence will bring reporters and cameras, once again in service of a struggle for clean water.
Last year, regulators found that Flint’s water supply contained illegally high levels of lead. The problem had been essentially ignored for more than a year after residents first complained of rashes, headaches and a foul odor from the brown or yellowish water that ran from their taps. As an investigation into the crisis surfaced stunning cases of overlooked illnesses and warnings, Flint—where 40% of the 100,000 residents live in poverty, and the majority of residents are black—came to represent the fallout from America’s tolerance of extreme inequality. Public attention has since faded, however, even though the crisis has not been fully resolved…”

Protesters at Standing Rock celebrate an unexpected victory
This story is a part of Across Women’s Lives PRI’s The World pri.org December 05, 2016 · 2:30 PM EST By Jasmine Garsd
“..The very first man I met upon arriving at the camp was a Navajo vet, named John Shirley. “I’m here to be, basically, a human shield,” he explained.
Shirley is a veteran of the first Iraq War. He came from Arizona to guard the protesters. I met him at the entrance to the sprawling camp, where, in recent weeks, protesters have clashed with National Guard soldiers and local police. And that’s when veterans like Shirley decided to come help people. To be that human shield.
To “stand there, close my eyes, and take whatever comes at me. As long as I can block and deflect whatever it may be … you know, that’s the way we was trained,” he says.
Like many veterans, he felt outraged at the way protesters were being treated by police. And he was also frustrated that Native lands and resources could be endangered by the pipeline. “I never thought I would be doing this on American soil,” he says. “Protecting the American people from their own government. I never thought that would happen, you know?”
Several thousand veterans felt the same way, pouring into the camp over the weekend. At a meeting Saturday night, in a warehouse outside Standing Rock, veterans were instructed to be nonviolent. Sage burned while men and women in uniform received marching orders: “We will not instigate.” They were told to spread the orders among themselves. No direct confrontation, and nothing that could harm the cause.
At that warehouse, there was a sense the pipeline was inevitable. By the next afternoon, they found out that wasn’t the case.
At the camp, Brandi King, a Nakota veteran of Iraq, said nonviolence is a challenging order for a warrior. “Fighting for peace is a lot harder than — I mean anyone can pull a trigger. … Actually being peaceful, and fighting for that — that takes a warrior. It takes a strong person to be peaceful.”….
King said after 10 years of not knowing what to do with herself, she finally began to heal at Standing Rock. “This — seeing people together, seeing people support each other, that provides healing for me. Seeing my indigenous brothers and sisters being able to stand up with pride, provides a healing for me.”

“…Thousands have registered to go. Here & Now’s Robin Young speaks with one of those vets, Dakota Blue Serna (@dakotabusmc), a former Marine.
On his motivation to go to Standing Rock
“I think a lot of veterans share my feelings that with these last couple of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that we got cheated. We were lied to from our government, and we went and we fought a war based on a lie. So a lot of our guys are feeling that our service really was for nothing, and so now we’re going out there because this is what we signed up for, this is where our passion is, this is what we signed up to defend, are the people here in our country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. And right now, I love my government, I love my country, but the government is kind of cracking down on peaceful protesters, and it broke my heart to watch these people being sprayed with water in 25-degree temperatures. That’s inhumane, that’s unethical and that’s un-American.”
On where he stands on the issue
“I’ve got friends on both sides. I understand both sides of the story here and that’s a little bit unfortunate — you catch flak from both ends. … I will say that the general consensus of those guys, they do agree with me when I say we need to find alternative sources of energy and we have the means and the technology to do so. And we need to move away from sucking the earth’s life blood out of the ground and polluting our air. And it’s possible, and I don’t understand why people are — you know, the people with the money who make those decisions — are pushing away from that.”..”

“…As a Native American U.S. Army veteran, Monroe, 35, has for years struggled with regret. He struggled with fighting in the Iraq War for a nation that had displaced millions of his people. When he was deployed in Iraq, he says, he noticed the parallels between Iraqis and Native Americans. ..
“I’m able to forgive myself now for some of the stuff that went on in Iraq,” Monroe said. “Feels good now that I’m forgiven and when I go to the other side and I cross the other side that I can be proud of this life I lived.” ..
As a member of the Nakoda tribe, Monroe’s roots trace back to Cannon Ball. As his ancestors fought foreign invaders to save their land from dispossession, Monroe says he and his peers fight with peaceful protest.

Are All These Pipelines Really Necessary? Legislators and Citizens Want FERC to Answer
By Robbie Harris • Oct 26, 2015 wvtf.org
“..“We believe that pipelines are unnecessary and reviews them together with existing infrastructure, it will determine that there is currently enough capacity in our pipelines that are already in place to carry the gas the Marcellus region through Virginia and North Carolina.

Natural gas study stirs up controversy over Atlantic Coast Pipeline By Caleb Stewart | Posted: Mon 7:12 PM, Sep 12, 2016 whsv.com
“…”The fact is, demand for natural gas in Virginia and North Carolina is growing significantly – by 165 percent over the next 20 years,” said Ruby. “Existing pipelines in the region are constrained and operating at full capacity. They are not capable of meeting that huge growth in demand. In Hampton Roads, Virginia, for example, natural gas service is already being curtailed for large industrial customers during high-demand periods because existing pipelines are so constrained. Utilities have looked at expanding that infrastructure for years, and it just isn’t feasible. That’s why we urgently need new infrastructure like the Atlantic Coast Pipeline.”..
In North Carolina, there is currently only one pipeline serving the entire state, and it predominantly serves the western North Carolina.,” said Ruby. “That leaves entire communities in eastern North Carolina with limited or no access to natural gas. Upgrading the existing system or using available capacity, as the authors of this report propose, won’t do anything to expand service in eastern North Carolina. That’s why you need the Atlantic Coast Pipeline – it will actually be located in eastern North Carolina where these communities are located.”
“The reality is, the existing pipelines in our region are constrained and operating at full capacity during those peak demand periods. We need new infrastructure to alleviate those constraints,” said Ruby. “That’s why we’re proposing the Atlantic Coast Pipeline..
—DEPENDENCE ON NATURAL GAS?—
The pipelines, if approved, would provide the mid-Atlantic with natural gas for 80 years, the lifetime of the pipelines. The SELC argues that that would lock the region in to dependence on natural gas.
“An investment of billions of dollars in natural gas will further discourage these utilities from moving towards renewable energy, like solar and wind power that could save their customers more money,” Buppert said.
The two proposed pipelines would transport fracked natural gas from wells in West Virginia to customers in Virginia and the Carolinas. The pipelines would transect natural and recreation areas, along with cities, towns and farms. A number of citizen groups and businesses in several states have formed to oppose the pipelines.
—EXPORTING NATURAL GAS—
The report also raises the possibility of another utility-driven incentive to push for these projects:
“Because the supply of natural gas is abundant, utilities are exploring options to export the fuel overseas. That would require more capacity to move natural gas to the mid-Atlantic’s coastal ports. Therefore, ‘pipeline developers … have an additional motivation to expand their ownership interests in natural gas supply infrastructure,’ the researchers said.”…”

New Technology Could End The Debate Over Pipeline Safety
By James Stafford – Aug 27, 2014, 6:16 PM CDT oilprice.com
“… They corrode and rupture, which threatens workers and nearby communities. In 2013 alone, over 119,000 barrels of oil were spilled in 623 incidents.
America’s existing pipelines are getting older and more prone to corrosion, and over the next five to 10 years, there will be a significant increase in the number of new pipelines.
And that is creating a huge opportunity for better pipeline safety technology.
Monitoring and detecting corrosion in pipelines is still a crude affair (no pun intended). Pipeline companies tend to underspend on safety, concerned only with meeting the minimum regulatory requirements.
One of the major ways pipeline operators detect corrosion is with a “pig,” a machine that travels down the inside of a pipeline looking for problems.
Pigs are not new — the industry has long relied heavily on them—and the newest generation of pigs, known as “smart pigs,” is considered an improvement over the pigs of yesterday. Smart pigs give a read on the state of the pipeline, such as cracks, corrosion, and metal loss. Operators receive this information in a control room and can then dispatch crews to fix the problem. As of 2012, 93 percent of pipeline inspections were conducted using smart pigs…
So alternative methods to detect trouble spots are needed. One method for detecting corrosion uses a device from outside the pipeline. A series of sensors placed on the outside of the pipeline can search for corrosion without interfering in operations.
Pipeline safety company Fox-Tek, a subsidiary of Augusta Industries (CVE: AAO), uses such a system to detect corrosion, as well as a fiber optic system to detect bends, strains and stress in pipelines.
But the real innovation in Fox-Tek’s system is its data analytics package. Companies that use smart pigs usually need to spend months doing post-inspection analysis, but Fox-Tek has developed proprietary software that does continuous and automatic analysis. ..”

Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline Pros and Cons By Scott Steele May 31, 2013 RSS PDF newswire.net
“..Looking at the advantages it is certain the pipeline will provide jobs to boost economic growth in communities along the pipeline, provincially and nationally. Enbridge Inc. (NYSE:ENB) (TSE:ENB) notes on its website that the, “Northern Gateway Project will create 550 long-term jobs in B.C., 380 in Alberta and 210 in the rest of Canada for a total of 1150 long term jobs. Also there will be 270 billion in growth to Canada’s GDP over 30 years.”
Pipe fabrication & manufacturing is done according to industry standards and specifications to ensure safe delivery of oil and gas fuels. After the pipe is manufactured it undergoes various testing phases and inspection services including visual inspection, protective coatings inspection, x-ray inspection to name a few.
Pipelines have been proven to be the safest and most reliable mode of transport. According to Canadian Energy Pipeline Association (CEPA), “Our most recent statistics show that 99.99 per cent of liquid products were transported safely between 2002 and 2011.”
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada report that only five pipeline accidents were reported to the TSB in 2011, down from the 2010 total of 11, and below the 2006–2010 average of 9.
Another advantage is the difficulties in handling large amount of products by rail from one loading point is reduced. Findings also show minimum transit loss.
The disadvantages to laying pipelines, including the initial cost of environmental studies, pipeline construction is very expensive. Over time the pipeline could corrode and cause leakage. The Pembina Institute, natural Resources Defense Council and the Living Oceans Society, which issued a joint report on the proposed pipeline in November 2011 stated, “Diluted bitumen may weaken pipelines at a quicker rate than conventional oil because of its acidic, sulphuric, abrasive and viscous nature.”
This is minimized by treatment of the pipe with anti-corrosive coating supplemented with cathodic protection along with increased inspections and pipeline maintenance. New and innovative technologies like digital sensors are being tested, these sensors would help lower the risks of leakage even further.
Pipelines can become damaged by natural disasters or sabotage resulting in contamination of soil and groundwater the costs for clean-up could be astronomical. These occurrences are a lot harder if not impossible to control. Some other disadvantages are slower delivery to a limitation of fixed points.
“Oilfield Directory offers oil and gas company information, recognizing the need for inspection services such as pipe inspection, tank inspection, infrared thermography, calibrations services and more we have oil and gas companies and contractors who are committed to the safety of individuals as well as the environment .” notes a company spokesman for oilfielddirectory.com..”

Oil Pipelines and Spills cla.auburn.edu
“..Ponca City, Oklahoma is an example of one of the cities that is being affected by the expansion of the Keystone pipeline. Ponca City is now receiving an increased amount of toxic emissions from tar sand transport. Tar sand is composed of sand, petroleum, and mineral salts; a highly toxic class of chemicals are also added (Tar Sands Blockade). Tar sand produces 17% more greenhouse gases than traditional crude oil (NPR). The air quality has become life threatening, and residents are forced to breathe in dangerous emissions. Children in surrounding the new pipeline are 56% more likely to develop leukemia versus children that live ten miles away. Even though the Keystone XL website states that it will be the “safest pipeline” in North American, shabby construction work has already had to be redone. If a leak does occur once the pipe is built, residents will be at risk of toxic exposure. In every instance of a tar sand leak in populated areas, toxic chemical exposure through respiration has occurred. Toxic chemical exposure can lead to migraines, painful rashes, breathing complications, nausea, chemical sensitivities, and exacerbated cancer activity (Tar Sands Blockade). Tar sand sinks into water, making the cleanup extraordinarily expensive. When tar sand is exposed to air, the harmful chemicals that are added as diluents evaporate into the air forming heavy toxic clouds close to ground level…”

The Real Impact of the Dakota Access Pipeline By Staff Writer Taylor Veracka ‘18 November 7, 2016 jhupolitik.org
“..With all the chaos surrounding the DAPL it’s hard to make out what exactly is the truth and what is not. There are some things that are strikingly clear, however. The Sioux Nation feel that they have been done (yet another) injustice by the US government. They feel their culture and environmental health is at risk, and that they are being taken advantage of. Clearly, many Americans agree. Regardless of the economic benefits of the pipeline, it is important to recognize the problems that the Sioux are facing, and to remember that the majority of the people making political decisions on oil transportation do not completely understand tribal connections to their land. This pipeline represents another opportunity to exploit already endangered and disadvantaged population, and their voices must be considered with the same weight as economic concerns. ..”

-Texas to Mexico
Inspired by Standing Rock, West Texans take action to fight another pipeline Sasha von Oldershausen The Nation Thu, 08 Dec 2016 12:12 UTC Map sott.net
“..Two residents of the 6,000-person city of Alpine were arrested early Tuesday morning on grounds of trespassing after they chained themselves to the entrance gates of a pipeline-construction site owned and operated by Energy Transfer Partners (ETP), the Dallas-based energy company responsible for the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). Dozens more stood by, holding electric tea lights and signs denouncing the energy company.
Inspired by the fight against the DAPL near the Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota, the group was protesting a different ETP pipeline project. The Trans-Pecos Pipeline will cut through the spare and pristine Big Bend region of Texas to the border of Mexico, transporting natural gas into Mexico’s interior. ..
…This week’s victory at Standing Rock, in which the Army Corps of Engineers announced it would not permit the pipeline to be drilled under the Missouri River, underscored the power of direct action. Indigenous organizers and, eventually, thousands of supporters camped on the banks of the Cannonball River to protect their ancestral lands and water source. Their united action, even in the face of police violence, proved that last resorts can work.
“[Standing Rock] in North Dakota has really reinvigorated the whole movement,” said Trans-Pecos Pipeline opponent David Keller, an archeologist who earlier this year watched as ETP pummeled through an ancient Native American site at Trap Spring, whose State Archeological Landmark status was pending at the time.
In fact, the events at Standing Rock have inspired the opposition to rethink their approach entirely. At a recent meeting, during which the opposition clandestinely discussed plans for Tuesday’s action, they talked about shifting the verbiage of their protest to more closely resemble that of the protest in North Dakota. ..
..Others see it as a collective fight. “We’re not piggybacking,” Glover said. “This is one big fight that we have before us and it’s scary but it’s also a wonderful opportunity for us because this is not just about our little space here or their space up in North Dakota. This is about how our water is going to be protected all over America.” ..
..In West Virginia and Virginia, for example, residents concerned about the $3.5 billion Mountain Valley natural gas pipeline have formed an alliance to oppose the project, which they say threatens their underground water supplies. Resistance is also gathering against the Bayou Bridge pipeline, another ETP project, which would snake through 60 miles of Louisiana and Texas. Still, few outside these and other municipalities engaged in local pipeline fights have taken notice….
Opponents of the Trans-Pecos Pipeline are eager to do the same. “Even if we don’t stop it altogether, we’re bringing a lot of awareness to this issue in order to pressure, to get our government to change oil and gas infrastructure regulation,” Glover said. …”
-Pipeline War or Not?
The Syrian Pipeline War: How Russia Trumped USA Energy War in the Mideast Wed, Sep 21, 2016 | russia-insider.com
There is a crucial hydrocarbon component to the great power contest in and around Syria says F. William Engdahl
“..In a fundamental sense the entirety of the five-year-long war over Syria, as well as the entire Arab Spring from Libya to Egypt to Iraq has been about control of hydrocarbon resources—oil and natural gas– and of potential hydrocarbon pipelines to the promising markets of the European Union.
Dick Cheney’s 2001 War on Terror was primarily about providing the excuse for a direct US military takeover of the vast oil fields of Iraq and other key Middle East countries. Washington’s War on Syria has been less a war for control of oil. Rather, it’s about who controls whose natural gas flows via which pipelines through which borders to the vast EU gas market.
At this point it looks more and more as if Russia’s geopolitical and geo-economic strategy is trumping (no Donald pun intended) Washington’s very troubled game in the region. Turkey is apparently deciding to become a key ally in this Russian energy trump…”
The Truth About Pipeline Politics in the Syrian Proxy War
“Published on Oct 7, 2015
Oil politics in the Syrian civil war is a complex web of money deception and proxy war. What began as non-violent grassroots rebellion against Bashar al Assad and the Syrian state has morphed into a complex proxy war involving countless factions and alliances competing for control of oil, and territory. Various nation states and world powers who have their own financial interests in the region are supporting the armies on the ground. This is because of Syria’s strategic importance as a potential gatekeeper between oil reserves from the gulf and oil markets in Europe. There are two different proposed pipelines that will have to run through Syria in order for this to happen. One sponsored by the gulf states called the “Qatar-Turkey pipeline” and one sponsored by the Iranians and Syrians nicknamed the “Islamic pipeline”.
Since the 1990s, Europe has been increasingly dependent on Russian natural gas and oil. In 2014 it was estimated that 42% of the European Union’s natural gas imports originated from Russia. This dependence has limited Europe’s ability to make a show of force against Russia. Last year the U.S introduced economic sanctions against Russia in retaliation for its annexation of Crimea. When the US asked the EU to participate, there was a heated debate amongst the European nations about how exactly to impose sanctions. Eastern Europeans felt especially threatened by Russia’s actions and wanted to enact the harshest penalties possible, however, Western Europeans were well aware that cutting off economic trade with Russia would destabilize their economies. As a result the European Union (EU) has desperately been looking for other sources of natural gas. The “pipeline” which will carry natural gas from Azerbaijan into Europe will help to offset dependence on Russian gas, but will take years to reach full capacity and will not rid Europe of Russian dependence altogether. On top of which European demand for natural gas is expected to rise dramatically in the next 30 years. There is only one known source of gas that can solve Europe’s long term energy needs and that’s source resides in the Middle East underneath the Persian Gulf.

U.S. ENERGY INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION (EIA) | Overview of oil and natural gas in the Eastern Mediterranean region | August 13, 2013
“Syria possesses the largest proved reserves of crude oil in the eastern Mediterranean countries. The Oil & Gas Journal estimated Syria’s proved reserves at 2.5 billion barrels in January 2013, a total larger than all of Syria’s neighbors except for Iraq. The Oil & Gas Journal also reported at the end of 2012 that Syria held proved reserves of 8.5 Tcf of natural gas. This gives Syria the largest conventional hydrocarbon resource base of the countries in this report,… http://www.eia.gov/countries/regions-…
*Note/Clarification: This is an excerpt from an at-length interview by Greg Hunter. While the interview is not about Syria, Hudes makes mention of Syria as an example of current-day, political theatre. In the original interview, while Hudes is correct regarding the true intent of the demonization/destabilization of Syria (natural gas/pipelines), her facts are reversed. The Saudis offered to purchase $15 billion in Russian arms & to restrict oil output for Russia to maintain their market & price. (Hudes states this info. the other way around.) -Not a Pipeline War
The War Against the Assad Regime Is Not a ‘Pipeline War’
by Gareth Porter, September 24, 2016 original.antiwar.com
“…Even more important, the immediate problem for Qatar’s proposal was not Syria but Saudi Arabia, whose territory the Qatari gas would have to cross to get to Syria. In January 2010, The National, a daily UAE [United Arab Emirates] newspaper reported that the main obstacle to the idea of a pipeline to carry Qatari natural gas to Turkey and then to Europe “was likely to be Saudi Arabia, which has a track record of obstructing regional pipeline development” and still had very bad relations with Qatar. And Middle East geopolitical analyst Felix Imonti reported at Oilprice.com in 2012 that Qatar had been forced to abandon the pipeline idea in 2010 because Saudi Arabia had not agreed to have it built across its territory…
If it’s not a pipeline war, why is the US intervening in Syria? The US decision to support Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia in their ill-conceived plan to overthrow the Assad regime was primarily a function of the primordial interest of the US permanent war state in its regional alliances. The three Sunni allies control US access to the key US military bases in the region, and the Pentagon, the CIA, the State Department and the Obama White House were all concerned, above all, with protecting the existing arrangements for the US military posture in the region.
After all, those military bases are what allow the United States to play at the role of hegemonic power in the Middle East, despite the disasters that have accompanied that role. The degree to which the US determination to preserve its present military profile in the region is illustrated by the case of US-Qatar relations over that tiny monarchy’s arming of extremist Sunni groups in Syria in 2012. The Obama administration was very unhappy with Qatar’s choice of proxies in Syria, and the National Security Council discussed a proposal to pull a squadron of US fighter planes from Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar as a way of putting pressure on the government over the issue, according to a story in the Wall Street Journal.
But the US Central Command (CENTCOM), which had moved its headquarters to Al Udeid in 2003, argued that the base was critical to its operations in the region, and that it was about to renegotiate its agreement with Qatar over the use of it. The Pentagon supported CENTCOM’s opposition to any move that would disturb relations with Qatar over the issue and vetoed any such pressure on Qatar. The administration ended up doing nothing about the issue, and in 2013, the US-Qatar Defense Cooperation Agreement originally reached in 2003 was renewed for another ten years.
The massive, direct and immediate power interests of the US war state – not the determination to ensure that a pipeline would carry Qatar’s natural gas to Europe – drove the US policy of participation in the war against the Syrian regime. Only if activists focus on that reality will they be able to unite effectively to oppose not only the Syrian adventure but the war system itself.”

With more than 500 treaties already broken, the government can do whatever it wants, it seems… By Samuel Vargo Friday Nov 21, 2014 · 4:06 PM CDT dailykos.com
“..More than 500 treaties have been made between the government and Indian tribes and all were broken, nulllified or amended. Nothing’s changed. The mere fact that the Keystone XL oil pipeline has even been considered is a violation of law and shouldn’t have seen blueprints, let alone having this North American monster voted on by the Senate and House of Representatives…
Nothing’s changed since then, actually. The Senate vote Tuesday was solely based on GREED and self-interest by Self-Serve-a-tive politicians who have been lambasted continually as being mere pawns for Big Oil & Gas, along with the interests of the egregious Koch Brothers.
The South Dakota Black Hills contains some of the most antediluvian mountains in the world, encompassing over 5,000 acres. And the Black Hills have been held sacred by the Lakota people since antiquity. The 1868 Fort Laramie Treaty designated the sovereignty of the Lakota people and prohibited outside settlers to ever occupy their lands. All this changed, though, in 1874 when gold was found in the Black Hills and in other areas held sovereign by the Lakota and non-Indian miners swarmed the Black Hills. Consequently, the federal government reneged on the Fort Laramie Treaties and took total control of the Black Hills again, only a decade after signing the second treaty.
The 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty, by the way, clearly defined boundaries owned by the Lakota people and if the land boundaries of this treaty were actually upheld by the federal government, a very large Indian state about twice the size of Oklahoma would now be situated somewhere in the upper Midwest, probably between Minnesota and Montana. But Wasi’chu had other plans and in 1862, President Abraham Lincoln allowed for a flood of white settlers into Native lands by signing the Homestead Act. In retaliation, there was an Indian uprising in 1863 by the Santee Sioux tribe in Minnesota which resulted in the largest mass-hanging in U.S. history wherein 38 Sioux men were hanged by order of President Abraham Lincoln. Ironically, the mass-execution came only two days after Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation…”
Broken Promises: Standing Rock Sioux Tribe Cites History of Government Betrayal in Pipeline Fight By EVAN SIMON Nov 22, 2016, 4:31 AM ET abcnews.go.com
“…Things only got worse for the Sioux after gold was discovered at the headwaters of the Missouri River in 1861, prompting a flood of settlers. The tribes repeatedly objected to the intrusions and demanded government recognition of the 1851 Fort Laramie Treaty, but their complaints fell on deaf ears.
By 1868, the U.S. government and representatives of various Sioux tribes convened once again at Fort Laramie. The resulting treaty established a much smaller territory known as the Great Sioux Reservation, but under Article 12 no further land loss could occur unless approved by three-fourths of adult Sioux males.
Nevertheless, after gold was discovered in the sacred Black Hills of South Dakota deep in Sioux territory, Congress passed the Act of 1877 which ceded the Black Hills to the United States without tribal approval in one of the most controversial land grabs in U.S. history.

The revelations of whistleblowers lead us to believe that we know a great deal about the secret world of Washington. This is an illusion.
“.. One thing couldn’t be clearer, though: the mania for secrecy has grown tremendously in the Obama years. On entering the Oval Office in 2009, Obama proclaimed a sunshine administration dedicated to “openness” and “transparency.” That announcement now drips with irony. 5 things to know about the Dakota Access Pipeline Updated 7:54 AM ET, Wed August 31, 2016
By Madison Park, CNN cnn.com
“2. Why is the pipeline being constructed?
The project developer, Dakota Access, a subsidiary of Energy Transfer Crude Oil, says the pipeline would help the United States become less dependent on importing energy from unstable regions of the world. It says a pipeline is the safest, most cost-effective and environmentally responsible way to move crude oil, removing dependency on rails and trucks.
It also estimates the pipeline would bring an estimated $156 million in sales and income taxes to state and local governments as well as add 8,000 to 12,000 construction jobs.
The proposal comes as a glut of cheap oil has devastated North Dakota’s economy. The state had enjoyed a major boom, but after hitting highs in 2014, it suffered a major economic downturn.
The project developers say the $3.7 billion project will “bring significant economic benefits to the region that it transverses.”..”

“…Wishing they’d go home
No one makes this clearer than Robert Fool Bear Sr., 54, district chairman of Cannon Ball. The town he runs, estimated population of 840, is just a few miles from the action. It’s so close that, given the faceoffs with law enforcement, you have to pass through a police checkpoint to reach it.
It’s about time people heard from folks like him, he says…
The crackdown also maddens Valandra’s 25-year-old daughter, Elaina, who works here at “the Z,” as locals call it. She grew up believing racism didn’t exist; not anymore.
She brings up the recent acquittal of Ammon Bundy and six others, who occupied a federal wildlife refuge earlier this year.
“The Bundys were armed to the teeth, and they’re acquitted,” she says.
She pulls up a Facebook post, showing a photo of a number scrawled on a man’s arm after he was arrested Thursday and words likening the treatment to what Nazis once did. Online comments and the stereotyping of her people leave her stunned. She wants people to know this battle isn’t about race.
“It’s about water, not just native people,” she says. “We don’t get another Earth.”…
…A shrug of indifference
Ten miles west of the protests, a man who doesn’t want to be named, for fear of retribution, admits he looks forward to the pipeline. It’ll mean fewer trucks barreling down these rural highways and fewer trains flying down the tracks.
Back at Cannon Ball, however, Carl Bruce, 52, isn’t afraid to say his piece. For this Standing Rock Sioux who has lived his life here, the pipeline doesn’t matter. If it breaks, he says he’d just work around it…”
“…The PSC is using the best techniques possible to keep our water safe.
“The pipe itself is heavier duty when crossing a water body. There are block valves on both sides of the water crossing to allow for shut down of the pipeline,” says Julie Fedorchak, ND Public Service Commissioner.
Fedorchak says pipelines are the safest and cleanest option available.
But people not in favor of pipelines say there should be more choices to.
“We’re often asked if you’re not for pipelines then you’re obviously for more train traffic. More train traffic, more trucks. I think that we’re limiting our options,” says Nicole Donaghy, Field Organizer, Dakota Resource Council.
And the Dakota Resource Council says many pipelines in operation are owned by offenders of repeat spills. They say the company which was responsible for the Bear Den Bay Spill had a record of spills.
“That same company Crestwood Arrow had four previous spills that year. So we have repeat offense, we have repeat offenders here in North Dakota that are running these pipelines,” says Donaghy.
The commission says it’s impossible to build anything that is 100 percent safe
“You can’t ensure that there’s never going to be a leak. I mean, that’s an impossible task, just like you can’t ensure that a train is never going to come off the tracks or that a truck is never going to crash carrying any of these kinds of products that we use every day,” says Fedorchak.
But Fedorchak says all pipelines go through incredible scrutiny and are as safe as possible.
Fedorchak reiterated that the Dakota Access Pipeline will not come into physical contact with the Missouri River, as it will be deep underneath the river bottom sometimes as deep as 90 feet.”
Voices from Standing Rock | The Washington Post Video by Zoeann Murphy, McKenna Ewen Published on December 2, 2016 washingtonpost.com
“…Most were peaceful and shouted “Water is life.” But one young man suddenly tried to push his way through the line of riot police, who threw him to the ground and cuffed him. The man screamed “Help!” and “I’m being kidnapped!” over and over and spat at the officers.
Bryson shook his head. To him, it was obvious the man had provoked arrest, for the benefit of the news cameras.
“This is what the community is tired of,” Bryson said. “We are one pin-drop away from this escalating to a really violent situation.”
….Recently, the protest has been “hijacked by extremist environmentalists” from out of state who harass workers, one of whom was beaten up at a gas station because he was wearing a safety vest with the company logo, Bryson said. People have put dirt into gas tanks of heavy machinery, smashed windshields and committed other acts of vandalism, reports confirmed by local police.
“Guys have gotten a lot smarter — traveling in groups, not wearing company branding or labels,” Bryson said. He himself received an anonymous email that included a photo of himself, his wife and his three small children taken from his Facebook page and his home address. It said: “We hope you enjoy burning in your home with your children.” He turned it over to police.
And it’s the out-of-towners, he said, who have turned the Dakota Access standoff into “a racial issue.”
“The only people creating a race issue or anything along those lines is out-of-state people that are just adding fuel to the fire, most of them being white themselves,” he said.
Bryson said Native American culture has always been “a big part of the community” in North Dakota. He said that he went to school with Native Americans who were “like brothers” to him: “We slept at each other’s houses, ate dinner together all the time as children.”
He is sympathetic to concerns about burial grounds and water purity but said that he thinks the project still can be completed safely and sensitively.
“To say that we’re doing this because we don’t care about them is totally not what it’s about at all,” he said.
Bryson said about 15 of his union members working on the pipeline were Standing Rock Sioux from the reservation. But nearly half of them have asked to be taken off pipeline work because “they were getting a lot of heat” from family members and others in their community…”
Why One Standing Rock Pastor Won’t Preach About the Pipeline-Tonya White Mountain lives out the Christian call to be a peacemaker Interview by Kate Shellnutt/ December 5, 2016 christianitytoday.com
“…During a recent trip, a truck tried to drive her off the road. After her twin sister recounted several incidents of aggression toward Native American drivers and cars with bumper stickers opposing the planned Dakota Access pipeline (DAPL), she realized it might not have been a random case of road rage.
For locals like White Mountain, the contentious pipeline debate isn’t constrained to the protest sites covered on the news. The tension spills over to the roadways, the hair salons, and even the church pews.
The greatest challenge for churches like hers, Good News Assembly of God Church in McLaughlin, South Dakota, is being a faithful witness amid political and racial polarization…
Speaking as a Native American, I have to say that the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe has never ceded the lands north of the Cannonball River. Those were lands that were “given” to the Standing Rock tribe during the treaty of Fort Laramie. Our tribe never did cede those lands back. They were chipped away at over the years. It’s an issue that for me, personally, I feel strongly about. But being that it’s a personal issue as a Native American, I did not, have not, and will not take a stand behind the pulpit. To me, it’s more of a political issue…
… In my travels, I noticed—all over the country—wherever there’s a minority, there’s going to be issues of discrimination. But it’s not really discrimination. It does boil down to the fact that it is the sin nature of human beings. As strongly as I feel about the whole DAPL issue, it does boil down to the fact that we are dealing with a fallen race. Until our Lord returns, there will always be issues that divide…
Every time I mention it when I’m behind the pulpit or in prayer meetings, I remind people that we are called to pray for everyone, and we are called to pray for those in authority over us. I reminded the congregation that whether or not we agree with either side, we are to pray for souls. I remind them that the things we see on Facebook or TV, we should be praying for the safety of the people—the police included. Anytime I ask for people to pray for the water protectors, I also reminded them to pray for the police, the military, and even the DAPL security. We’re all souls in need of saving…”

1 mn gallons of oil-drilling byproducts leaked into N. Dakota drinking water
Published time: 10 Jul, 2014 17:28 rt.com
“…The cleanup is expected to last for weeks, according to Miranda Jones, vice president of environmental safety at Crestwood Midstream Partners LP. A subsidiary of Crestwood – Arrow Pipeline LLC – owns the underground pipeline.
Jones believes the leak started over the Fourth of July weekend, but was only detected when the company was sorting through production loss reports, according to AP.
“This is something no company wants on their record, and we are working diligently to clean it up,” Jones said.
Yet Karolin Rockvoy, a McKenzie County emergency manager, visited the site of the leak and said, based on the amount of devastation done to local vegetation, the spill had probably gone undetected for some time.
The pipeline was not equipped with technology that alerts operators of a leak, Jones said. Last year, the state legislature rejected legislation mandating pipeline flow meters and cutoff switches.
It is as yet unknown how much of this saltwater – between 10 and 30 times saltier than sea water and considered an environmental hazard by the state of North Dakota – found its way into Bear Den Bay, which leads to Lake Sakakawea.
The lake supplies water for the reservation, where the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara tribes live in an area of western North Dakota that is experiencing an unprecedented drilling boom.

Whistleblower John Bolenbaugh, (a former oil employee), who has spent his life savings documenting oil spills– and who turned down a 60 million dollar settlement explains the dangers of oil pipelines everywhere, and why they are designed to fail. Oil companies profit from the insurance companies who pay them to clean up their own messes. These messes are poisonous because of the molotov cocktail of chemicals used to thin the tar sands. Veterans to deploy for Standing Rock By Sophie Lewis, CNN Updated 11:55 AM ET, Wed November 23, 2016 cnn.com
“I’m going for religious reasons. I’m not a leader. I’m not in charge. We are self-organizing this,” Clark said. They are hoping for a turnout of 500, but, “if we only have 20 or 30, that’s what God provides us,” he said.
Clark decided to take action after an elder from Standing Rock called him about the protests. “When she described what was going on, it brought tears to my eyes,” he said. “People are concerned about the way the elders who are praying are being brutalized, and what we are doing to the planet.”
Wood said, “If we don’t stand up for the oppressed, that’s the snowball that starts that leads to everyone else’s oppression.
“It doesn’t matter if you are a libertarian, a conservative, or a progressive, this is everyone’s fight,” he said…”

Column: What Dakota Access Pipeline protesters aren’t telling you
By Shawn McCoy on Nov 14, 2016 at 7:58 a.m. .inforum.com/
“…In September 2014 alone, the Corps made five unsuccessful attempts to meet with Standing Rock Sioux leaders. The next month, a meeting was arranged, but “when the Corps timely arrived for the meeting, Tribal Chairman David Archambault told them that the conclave had started earlier than planned and had already ended,” according to a federal judge.
At a planned meeting the next month, the tribe took the pipeline off the agenda and refused to discuss it. This stonewalling by tribal leaders continued for a year and a half.
Typical of the misinformation spread during the protests is a comment made by Jesse Jackson, who recently joined the activists in North Dakota. He said the decision to reroute the pipeline so that it crossed close to the Standing Rock Sioux tribe’s water intake was “racism.”
He did not mention, possibly because he did not know, that the company is paying to relocate the tribe’s water intake to a new spot 70 miles from the location of the contested pipeline crossing…”

“…The elder, Allard, told the Seattle Times: “I am a common man, a man of prayer. We live our lives in peace and nonviolence.” The newspaper said he persuaded the protesters known as “Water Protectors” to put rocks back in the river and take down barricades. He told the newspaper the tribe would try to win the argument with prayer, not violence.
However, the Water Protectors have claimed they were subjected to human rights abuses, including being placed in what they felt were shelters similar to dog kennels…”

The Tribe Never Took Part In The Initial Consulting Process
The Army Corps of Engineers attempted more than a dozen times between 2014 and 2016, according to court documents, to discuss the DAPL route with the Standing Rock. The tribe either failed to respond to requests for consultation or dragged its feet during the process.
The Corps sent a letter to the tribe in October of 2014 with information about the proposed pipeline routes as well as maps documenting the known cultural sites the Corps had identified.
“In addition, the letter requested that any party interested in consulting on the matter reply within thirty days,” the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia wrote in August. “No response was received from the Tribe.”
The head of the North Dakota Public Service Commission mirrored the judge’s decision earlier this week, telling reporters that the tribe had plenty of time to voice concerns before the pipeline’s construction.
Julie Fedorchak, who serves as the chairman of the commission, told National Public Radio in an interview Wednesday that Standing Rock Sioux did not participate in the nearly 30 hours of meetings held to determine the pipeline’s southern route.
..The tribe has attempted to meander around that problem by arguing the land is theirs under the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1851.
“This demolition is devastating,” Standing Rock Chairman David Archambault II told reporters in October. “These grounds are the resting places of our ancestors. The ancient cairns and stone prayer rings there cannot be replaced. In one day, our sacred land has been turned into hollow ground.”
The treaty was forged between the U.S. government and the Great Sioux Nation, not Standing Rock. Still, tribe members have challenged the treaty and others like it in court for not being honored…

‘..There were actually several 1-pound propane canisters recovered from the site of the explosion by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms (ATF). You’ll note that the more severely damaged of the two canisters, shown in two different angles in the second and third photos above, seem to have coagulated blood and tissue upon them.
If testing does confirm that the material on the propane cylinder is blood and tissue, then there is clearly enough to get a DNA match to the person who left that genetic material behind.
While the ATF was cataloging the apparent components of a faulty improvised explosive device (IED, a kind of bomb) that domestic terrorists/protestors attempted to deploy against police lines, agents with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force (JTTF) went to the hospital to acquire Sophia Wilansky’s clothes, and they confiscated it into evidence.

http://democracynow.org – President Obama says the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is considering rerouting the $3.8 billion Dakota Access pipeline, amid months of resistance from the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and members of more than 200 other Native American nations and tribes from across the Americas. “My view is that there is a way for us to accommodate sacred lands of Native Americans,” Obama said. “And I think that right now the Army Corps is examining whether there are ways to reroute this pipeline in a way.” Meanwhile, on Wednesday, police deployed pepper spray and tear gas against dozens of Native American water protectors during a standoff at Cantapeta Creek, north of the main resistance camp. At least two people were shot with nonlethal projectiles. Video and photos show police firing the pepper spray and tear gas at the water protectors, who were peacefully standing in the creek. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers had ordered police to arrest the Native Americans and destroy a bridge that members of the camp had constructed over the creek in order to protect a sacred burial ground they say is being destroyed by construction and law enforcement activity.

Gen. Wesley Clark’s son and namesake on why protecting the environment is a human issue, not an Indian issue
“…When Phil Young called me to say that elderly women who were praying were being beaten, children were being bitten by dogs, people were being put into dog kennels, it brought back memories from my childhood where I was sitting in church and hearing the gospel, with Jesus saying, “What you do to my brothers, you do to me.” Suddenly it made sense. Now it’s like a spiritual fire has been lit inside me. So I’m going to do whatever is right for people defending their resources. I’m no Jesus: I’ve been a sinner. But I do believe in “do unto others.”
The most important things in life are kindness, compassion, honesty, caring for neighbors. Most important is forgiveness. I am going out there literally ready to be killed, and if that’s what happens, I don’t want any violence to come out of it. I want forgiveness.
We are raised in America to be spectators. The vast majority of children don’t play sports in school; they watch games. Life is about living not watching other people do it. It’s not enough to go to church and say you believe; you have to live it. I’m nothing special. Everyone is going to Standing Rock with the same idea. We will not stop until this country gets it right, until we live by our proposed ideals…”

Julian Assange fuels conspiracy theories about Democratic aide’s death
Michael Walsh 13 hours ago (Aug 10th 2016) news.yahoo.com
“..In an interview on Dutch television, the Australian cyberactivist invoked the unsolved killing of Seth Rich, 27, earlier this summer to illustrate the risks of being a source for his organization.
Citing WikiLeaks protocol, Assange refused to confirm whether or not Rich was in fact a source for WikiLeaks, which has released thousands of internal DNC emails, some of them politically embarrassing. Experts and U.S. government officials reportedly believe that hackers linked to the Russian government infiltrated the DNC and gave the email trove to WikiLeaks.
But Assange was apparently interested in hinting about an even darker theory.
“Whistleblowers go to significant efforts to get us material, and often very significant risks. There’s a 27-year-old, works for the DNC, who was shot in the back, murdered just a few weeks ago for unknown reasons as he was walking down the street in Washington,” Assange said on Nieuwsuur. BuzzFeed drew more attention to the interview in the U.S.

“…Silsby is the former director of “The New Life Children’s Refuge.” She was caught trying to kidnap 33 Haitian children, most of whom had families. By following the trail of declassified Wikileaks emails the social media blogger discovered that Huma Abedin was “constantly forwarding emails to Hillary Clinton” about Laura Silsby’s organization.
The blogger also linked Clinton emails to an attempt to protect Laura Silsby from prosecution.
The blogger known as PleadingtheYiff was a user on social media website Reddit according to a Daily News article which Charisma News quoted in their story. They suggested that there was a connection to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton’s Chief of Staff Cheryl Mills and others after finding emails that appear to be drafts after extradition.
The discovery also included Wikileaks emails from Hillary Clinton, the content of which reveal Clinton contacting a lawyer regarding ten people arrested involved in the child trafficking ring. It was also revealed that the lawyer who represented Silsby was a convicted child sex trafficker.

Not only is he the only Republican candidate who could win the general election, but he is the only choice Republican voters should consider (and should consider themselves lucky to have on their side).
In no particular order, here are the top 20 reasons why:
1. He is not your ordinary politician. Yes, Trump is different. Guess what? That’s a good thing. His ideas – e.g., a sound immigration policy, returning manufacturing jobs to America, negotiating better trade deals – are not at all radical, but do go against the Washington status-quo. …

For England was the Headquarters, the hub from which the D-Day assault was launched, so shall it be for my America for the end time harvest. For as England had men, women, equipment, food, money, weapons, and supplies of all kinds which poured in from all over the world, so shall all these things pour into my chosen America. America I have chosen you as the launching platform for the world wide assault on the spiritually oppressed peoples of the earth. People will say how are we chosen? It’s as if America is frozen.
Am I not the God of the universe and all of creation? I have heard the cries of my people that have sought my face, and I WILL HEAL THEIR NATION! People will ask how will I do this. I shall do this in two parts. First- The Spirit of God says! “Army of God, out of the darkness! I COMMAND YOU TO ARISE AND TAKE YOUR PLACE! For I have given you extra time, mercy and grace. Go, Go, Go, do not slow down. Begin to take and hold your ground, for there is no more time to waste. America will once again be the great light. The enemy will say, “Oh the Light, the Light it shines so bright, there is nothing else left to do but take flight.” And indeed they will. The sign will be, a mass exodus in the natural as the spiritual flee. Second- The Spirit of God says, “The gate keeper, the gate keeper, the President of the United States is the spiritual gate keeper. I have chosen this man Donald Trump and anointed him as President for such a time as this.

Thanks to Millennial Millie for the interviews. The stark contrast between Trump women and Hillary skanks reinforces Steve Sailer’s apt diagnosis of the Left as “a coalition of the fringes.” Surely, the catastrophic moral lives of Leftist women–bottoming out in their readiness to commit fetal infanticide–is written on their faces. Leftist women are truly mangled souls, which manifests in their mangled and vandalized bodies.
I added the material in the beginning and end, and edited out most of the third-worlders. Refreshing, isn’t it? The bestial skank in the beginning is a proxy for all Hillary supporters and their white ethnomasochist enablers. No need to torture viewers with any more than this representative glimpse of a Hillary hag.

Why Did So Many White Women Vote for Donald Trump?
Laura Morgan Roberts,Robin J. Ely
Updated: Nov 18, 2016 1:00 AM Central fortune.com
“..He received the strongest support from white women without college degrees, 62 percent of whom voted for him. Although his supporters reported median household incomes of $70,000, the Trump campaign tapped into fears and frustrations among white working-class women about diminished possibilities for their husbands and sons to provide for their families. Many supporters’ families work in blue-collar occupations such as construction, transportation, and infrastructure; live in low mobility areas; and have little personal contact with immigrants.
..In addition, although Clinton won the popular vote, exit polls suggested that more people cast their vote against her than against him. Those who found Trump unlikable but still voted for him numbered 20 percent of his supporters, while only 12 percent of those who said they disliked Clinton still voted for her. Seventy percent of white voters also described Clinton as dishonest or untrustworthy. This dynamic may also help explain why so many millennials who had supported Bernie Sanders didn’t vote this time around; they just couldn’t get over their dislike for Hillary…”

Donald Trump is perhaps best known for the money he’s made (and lost) in real estate, his less-than-humble demeanor and his hit reality TV show, ‘The Apprentice.’ In recent years, the business tycoon has also been chasing the dream of holding the highest office in the land. Although many people know he has been eyeing the Oval Office for a couple of election cycles, you may be surprised to learn just how far back his presidential aspirations reach. Donald Trump says Hillary Clinton is ‘wrong’ to say he mocked a disabled reporter
By Alan Gathright, Louis Jacobson on Thursday, October 20th, 2016 at 1:31 a.m. politifact.com
“…Kovaleski countered that as a reporter for the New York Daily News in the late 1980s and early 1990s he regularly covered Trump. He told the Washington Post he was sure the businessman remembered him — and his condition.
“Donald and I were on a first-name basis for years,” Kovaleski told the New York Times.
In fact, Kovaleski recalled spending the day with Trump in 1989 when the reporter and other journalists flew with the billionaire on the “inaugural voyage” of the Trump Shuttle airline.
In addition, Trump spoke familiarly about Kovaleski at the rally, calling him a “nice reporter.” He also described him as “the poor guy” and indicated he knew Kovaleski’s appearance (“you gotta see this guy”) before launching into his imitation.
After our fact-check appeared, the Washington Post Fact Checker reviewed both Trump’s original comments and subsequent ones he made on the same subject in Colorado. The Fact Checker concluded that “Trump clearly mocked Kovaleski” and it gave Trump its lowest rating, Four Pinocchios…”
Why is Trump criticized for making fun of a disabled person when Obama gets a pass for saying his bowling is “like the Special Olympics?”
“..The thing is, when called out on this, Trump refused to acknowledge it or apologize, and instead repeatedly lied, claiming that he’d never met Mr. Kovaleski. For the record, Kovaleski interviewed Trump, in person, multiple times over the course of several years. And that claim is particularly ironic, given that Trump (who claims to have “the world’s greatest memory”) was mocking Kovaleski for not remembering something.
But, for those of us who find Trump’s excuses transparently implausible, that’s a mean-spirited mockery that he refuses to admit or apologize for. Which is a very different thing from immediately apologizing for an accidentally insensitive remark…”

Unprecedented Prayer on Display at Trump Inauguration
01-21-2017 Charlene Aaron cbn.com
“…The prayers included several references to the name of Jesus.
Cardinal Timothy Dolan beseeched God for wisdom for the new president as he read from the scriptures.
Rodriguez read from the Sermon on the Mount, in chapter five of the Gospel of Matthew.
“God blesses those who are poor and realize their need for him, for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs,” he read.
“And God blesses you when people mock you and persecute you and lie about you and say all sorts of evil things against you because you are my followers. For you are the light of the world — like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on its stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
He ended his prayer in the name of Jesus.
White prayed, “We come to you Heavenly Father in the name of Jesus with grateful hearts thanking you for this great country that you have decreed to your people.”
“We acknowledge we are a blessed nation…every good and perfect gift comes from you,” she too referenced the name of Jesus after her prayer.
President Trump also referenced God at the end of his speech, saying, “We will be protected by God.”
Rev. Franklin Graham pointed out that it started to rain as President Trump delivered his inaugural speech.
“Mr. President, in the Bible, rain is a sign of God’s blessing,” he said. “And it started to rain Mr. President when you came to the platform.”
Graham also quoted a passage of scripture from from 1 Timothy 2.
“I urge then first of all that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people,” he said. “For kings, for all those in authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
“This is good and it pleases God our Saviour who wants all people to be saved,” he added.
Graham also acknowledged, “There is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus.”
Rabbi Hier also led a prayer.
“Bless President Donald J. Trump and America our great nation,” said Hier.
“Guide us to remember the words of the Psalmist, “Who may dwell on your holy mountain? One who does what is right and speaks the truth.”
“Bless all of our allies around the world who share our beliefs. “By the rivers of Babylon we wept as we remembered Zion… If I forget thee o’ Jerusalem may my right hand forget its skill.”
Bishop Wayne T. Jackson rendered the benediction at the close of the inauguration.
He hosted the then-Republican presidential candidate at his Great Faith Ministries International in Detroit during the presidential campaign.
He prayed for the new president and for unity and healing in the country.
“We’re not enemies. We’re brothers and sisters. We’re not adversaries, but we’re allies. We’re not foes but we’re friends. Let us be healed by the power of your love and united by the bond of your spirit.”
Across the country, Episcopal congregations also marked the inauguration of Donald Trump with prayer.

I decided to do this blog on this increasing growing topic after meeting a Vet that openly shared about this P.T.S.D. this morning. I was coming out of the local fitness center (R.F.C.) and as I was about to bike off after unlocking my chain, this “older” gentlemen (with a beard and a cane-thought he was blind as he held on to the rails along the wall. He appeared to be going to the P.E. Center to watch a local high school basketball game as he was wearing a West Central Knights jacket) wandered towards me to chat.
We talked about the nice sunny weather as a popular “Minnesota” topic. Somehow he asked where I was from, which I told him my parents are from the Philippines. He then told me he has had bad memories of being there? He then told me he was stationed there in the army. I then asked, “where-Subic Bay?”. He said, “yes..have you been there before”. I replied “yes too and told him I was there back in 2012 for vacation”. He openly (like many vets has had with me in the Morris area) shared he was in Vietnam. I then quickly replied, “thank you for serving”. He then replied, “not many people agreed when we returned home from Vietnam”, which I can agree with him from my history lesson. I then thought in my mind that it wasn’t his or any of the soldiers fault as I “blame” the “U.S. Government” (based on research I found). Anyways, he appeared to not want to chat more on this topic as he slowly walked away and went inside the RFC. I quickly prayed in my mind for him and thought about other Vets I know and have met.
Below are some notes I’ve collected on this topic on my facebook pic..
Veterans statistics: PTSD, Depression, TBI, Suicide.
19% of veterans may have traumatic brain injury (TBI)
-recent sample of 600 veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan found: 14% post-traumatic stress disorder; 39% alcohol abuse; 3% drug abuse. Major depression also a problem.
-in times of peace, in any given year, about 4% (actually 3.6%) of the general population have PTSD (caused by natural disasters, car accidents, abuse, etc.)
-Oddly, statistics for veteran tobacco use are never reported alongside PTSD statistics, even though increases in rates of smoking are strongly correlated with the stress of deployment and combat, and smoking statistics show that tobacco use is tremendously damaging and costly for soldiers.

“….I did not know what to do, I was afraid to go to sleep in fear the enemy (VC) Viet Cong would hurt my family. I decided the only way out where the enemy could no longer hurt me or my family was to take a lot of medication and to commit suicide. I began taking medication and took about 26 or so pills the day of January 17, 1991. I knew that by taking that much medication it could possibly kill me, I was ready to stop living. …n my last breath of air, I just put both of my hands toward heaven and said to God, “DO SOMETHING WITH ME NOW OR TAKE ME HOME”. I took my last breath. The next thing that I remembered wad seeing white and my arms were still stretched toward heaven, I was numb all over and could not move, and was so hot inside, but I felt a peace in my mind. As I looked up toward heaven I heard these words, “WILLIAM YOU MUST NAME ALL OF THE PEOPLE THAT YOU HATE EVEN ALL OF THE VIETNAMESE THAT YOU HATE AND ALSO THE ONES THAT YOU THINK THAT YOU HATE, AND THEN ASK ME FOR FORGIVENESS. I said Lord I don’t hate anyone anymore, “AND GOD SAID NAME EACH PERSON.” So I started to name the ones that I hated and then ask God for forgiveness….”
“…Just take some examples: The veterans – men and women – who are coming back from Iraq and Afghanistan suffering from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). Here we are talking about more than a million vets. Simply coming back and resting for a while doesn’t heal their wounds. Our friend, Rev. Nigel Mumford is a veteran of English military who saw fellow soldiers killed and personally experienced healing for PTSD. He is now planning “Welcome Home” programs for wounded vets and is in touch with the Pentagon and UK military leaders for prospects on future programs. This is a huge need and requires experience and time that most healing ministries simply do not have. For instance, Judith and I spent an entire weekend ministering to a Vietnam vet who hadn’t been able to sleep in a bed for 20 years, but after prayer was able to sleep through the night for the first time in 20 years. And there are millions more who need prayer because human sources of healing are good as far as they go, but they don’t reach down into the very depths of the souls of vets who have been wounded or have seen friends die…”
“…ck to that moment to relive it again and again. So what is the answer?
One of the ways to defuse the memories is to expose them. I’ve heard it said that you are only as sick as the secrets you keep but revealing is healing! When you bring the event into the light, darkness loses its power!! The enemy would have you keep the memory under lock and key in the fortress of your mind. But Paul tells us that light and darkness can’t coexist. Darkness loses its power when you turn on the light! Exposing it and releasing it allows Jesus to restore your soul!
The word restoration in itself means to be put back together to its original state. We can infer that this means “before the trauma.” And if it’s before the trauma, then those memories aren’t going to continue to wreak havoc on your soul. You may still remember that place, but it won’t be so painful. I think of it much like a scar reminds you of a past wound or surgery. You see the reminder…but it doesn’t hurt anymore….”

“…There were some benefits to colonialism, depending on the country. For example, the United States brought more democracy and economic expansion to the Philippines than would (arguably) have existed if the US had never colonized the islands. As someone who is half-Filipino myself, I am not trying to claim that the US occupation was all for the good. However, the Philippines were, for example, the first country in Asia to have a freely elected national legislature. This, along with the sorts of economic and social (education, hygiene) changes brought by the Americans show that colonialism was not always 100% bad…”
Kennon Road and Baguio by Ernesto R. Zárate, FPIA gobaguio.com
The epic of Kennon Road is a part of the story of Baguio.
Without it, Baguio would not have survived.
“..La Trinidad, became a foothold to the Cordillera Mountains. Through the years the Spanish tried to institute order, build churches and schools, make trails and introduce the planting of vegetables and coffee…
The coming of the Americans
…As early as 1892, a young American zoologist from Michigan,
Dean Conant Worcester, heard about this fabulous place from one Domingo Sanchez, a member of the Spanish Forestry Bureau. (Worcester would later become a member of the Philippine Commission.) In July 1900, he led a group of Americans on an expedition to the Benguet region and that trip resulted in the birth of Baguio.
The first American explorers were smitten with the weather and landscape and decided that it would be an ideal site for a future city and summer retreat from the sweltering heat of the lowlands. It did not take long for Gov. William Howard Taft (who later became President of the United States) and other officials to agree that this should be the location for the summer capital and health resort of the Philippines…
..Disquieting rumors were also rife as to the practicability of completing the road. There was a difference of opinion between the engineer in charge and one of his immediate subordinates. They could not agree on which route should be followed. The consulting engineer of the commission was thus ordered to make a survey. He reported that the route that was started was the more feasible course, but to complete the project, at least $1,000,000.00 would be needed. Not wanting to relive the experience the Commission had with Engr. Meade, they solicited expert advice, from Colonel Lyman W. V. Kennon, a man of great energy and executive ability, who had had vast experience in engineering work in mountainous country…”
*see Philippines: Baguio City in Benguet Province smiletravelingblog.wordpress.com
…In addition to the roadbed itself, Colonel Kennon constructed 40 bridges—two of which were made of steel, the others of wood. Except for the use of dynamite to blast out solid rock, it must be noted that there were no heavy equipment then—work was done usually with ordinary picks and shovels. This was no small feat in 1905. Still, according to engineering experts, it was the most expensive engineering work at that time, a big drain on the colonial budget….
In other words, what we see and admire as the Zigzag portion of Kennon Road was actually the result of a grave engineering error—a basic blunder where the lower portion of the road did not meet as it should with the upper section. But the Americans did not condemn this mistake—they glorified it. To paraphrase an old Tagalog maxim: “Bato na ginawang ginto.”
Nevertheless, it cannot be denied that the completion of the Kennon Road in 1905, just five years after the American colonial government authorized its construction, opened up Baguio and soon the rest of the Cordillera region to the world. More than that, it spurred the development of Baguio and nearby areas so that in 1920, the city was already a thriving population center.”

Spanish Influence on Language, Culture, and Philippine History filipinokastila.tripod.com
“..The Filipino populace embraced Spanish Roman Catholic Christianity almost unquestioningly. The Spanish authorities congregated the scattered Filipino population into clustered village settlements, where they could more easily be instructed and Christianized under a friar’s eye. This policy paved the way for the emergence of the present system of politico-territorial organization of villages, towns, and provinces. At the same time, the compact villages which were literally under the bells of the Roman Catholic Church permitted the regular clergy to wake up the villagers each day, summon them to mass, and subject them to religious indoctrination or cathechismal instruction. This process enabled the Church to play a central role in the lives of the people because it touched every aspect of their existence from birth to growth to marriage to adulthood to death. Whether the natives clearly understood the tenets and dogmas of the Roman Catholic Church is of course another matter. Some scholars claim that the Spaniards only superficially Christianized the Filipinos, most of whom learned to recite the prayers and chants by rote, without any idea as to their meaning. Some native inhabitants became only nominal Christians. At any rate, there is no denying the fact that many Filipinos defended the Catholic faith devotedly. ..”
CHRISTIANITY IN THE PHILIPPINES Professor Susan Russell
Department of Anthropology seasite.niu.edu
“…Christianity in the Philippines Today:
Christianity in the Philippines today, unlike during the Spanish period, is a mixture of nationalistic efforts by local peoples to ‘Filipinize’ Roman Catholicism and the efforts of a variety of Protestant missionizing successes. In the American colonial period, 1900-1946, a lot of Protestant teachers and missionaries came to the Philippines to ‘purify’ what they viewed as the incorrect or ‘syncretic’ characteristics of charismatic blends of Filipino Roman Catholicism. The Aglipayans were among the first to try to Filipinize Roman Catholicism and were popular in the early part of American colonial rule. The Iglesia ni Kristo is another Filipino-founded sect that has found strong support among well-to-do Filipinos.
In remoter parts of the Philippines, where Spanish colonialism and Roman Catholicism never penetrated until the beginning of the 20th century, a variety of Christian missionaries compete for new converts. Seventh Day Adventists and Jehovah’s Witnesses typically go door-to-door, spreading the specific messages that their sects support. In traditional, staunchly Roman Catholic areas, their missionizing efforts and attacks on syncretic forms of Roman Catholicism are often unwelcome. In areas where Roman Catholicism is still fairly recent, the missionaries carry messages that are more carefully listened to by local Filipinos. What was once a truly Roman Catholic country in terms of the population has given way to a variety of forms of Christianity.
In the Luzon highlands, for example, where many indigenous ethno-linguistic groups resisted Spanish rule, Roman Catholic or Anglican priests today have a fairly comfortable accommodation with indigenous forms of ritual and belief. Local peoples follow traditional customs related to burial rites, but often invite Christian priests to celebrate the last rites or formal burial rites in addition. The advantage of this kind of syncretism is that people’s beliefs and support for their traditions are not lost, but simply accommodated with beliefs and practices associated with the newer religion. Many recent Protestant missionaries, in contrast, fail to recognize the value of supporting indigenous customs, and simply attack local religious practices as evil. Their meager success in attracting converts speaks to the need for understanding the context in which American religious practice can flourish…”
What are the positive and negative effects of spanish contributions in the Philippines? answers.yahoo.com
“Let’s answer this via the timeline. First and foremost, the colonization of the Spaniards introduced the Philippines to the “modern world”. As a matter of fact, the Philippines wasn’t even a country when the Spaniards came. It was just a series of islands with different tribes living in different “barangays.” BUT they did have a form of organization. The positive effect simply is that the coming of the Spaniards, aside from bringing together the 1000+ islands under one flag, helped the Philippines become a modern country. The Europeans were at the forefront of progress and modernity at the time. Clearly, one negative effect was the maltreatment of the Spaniards (most particularly the friars) towards the Indios. But a positive effect that grew out of that was the birth of Nationalism, which Rizal and the other ilustrados brought into fruition. Now fast-forward to today. If you notice how divided the nation is in terms of social classes (the poor are the majority in terms of numbers but are the minority in terms of power while the rich are the complete opposite), as well as the corruption, it all goes back to the Spanish colonial times. The way the friars and the Spanish government ran the country is still the same way people run the country today. It’s whoever has the money has the power.
