Movie Reflection: Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings

Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings | Official Trailer

First, I would like to start off that I love martial arts movies, so this movie was awesome! I watched this movie with some friends after getting a rental DVD from Red Box at the local grocery store. We watched the movie straight on from beginning to end without getting up from our seats at home as we were glued to it. There are some movies that you can go take a break during a “slow-scene”, but this movie had action from beginning to the end- even to after the credits as most Marvel movies does.

While watching the movie , I was able to some-what relate to most of the background of the characters as an “Asian American”. As a second-generation Asian American, one kind of lives two lives (culturally) – One as an “American” growing -up in the United States and second as an “Asian” with holding on the “Asian culture” of your parent(s).

SPOILER ALERT!!!

Why I’m writing about this particular movie is because I thought the story of Xu Wenwu, the father was very relevant to life challenges overall (past, present, and future). A father that lost his wife and couldn’t live his “life” fully as he wasn’t able to handle his grief or “lost”. Unfortunately, his kids (son and daughter) had to “live” their lives “facing” their father’s grief and challenges. I love the scene when the son (Shang -Chi ) quoted (paraphrasing), “When you lost mom, you forgot we (him and his sister) were alive”. Stop living the past, and move on..”

This reminds me of my recent personal video reflection I recently made on..

Reflection on: Isaiah 43-“Forget the Past”

..which I included an excerpt of this movie at the time of the making.

So how do “we” move on from the “past” (e.g. hurts, mistakes, trauma, sins, etc..)? Do you have any personal suggestions or personal advice from your own life? If Xu had that “support” from others, you think he would’ve been able to handle his wife’s death a “little” easier or better?

“..Michael Ende (www.michaelende.de) was born in Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany, in 1929. After attending drama school from 1948 to 1950, he worked variously as an actor, a writer of sketches and plays, a director of the Volkstheater in Munich, and a film critic for the Bavarian broadcasting company. His first novel for children, Jim Knopf and Lukas the Engine Driver, was published in Germany in 1960 to great popular and critical acclaim, and both radio and televsion series based on the Jim Knopf books were soon produced. In 1973 he published another award-winning children’s novel, Momo. When The Neverending Story was first published in Germany in 1979 it immediately became the number-one bestseller arnd remained in that position for three years. It has since been published in many different languages all over the world, including Japanese, and has enchanted readers in each country in which it has appeared…”

‘..I have a first edition already but I wanted a copy to gift to my niece. My biggest concern was whether the copy offered here had the red and green ink of the original I read so long ago. Trust me, it makes a difference. That is why I am here to confirm that the hardcover copy ordered from Amazon (not sure about other sellers) is indeed in color, with the full page chapter illustrations to boot…”

BOOK VS. FLICK: THE NEVERENDING STORY .syfy.com/
“…Despite its undisputed success and his initial excitement about the plans for the film, Ende ultimately grew to despise the adaptation, calling to cease production before filming had ended. The filmmakers did not, and he sued them. Ende lost the case, and was deeply embittered towards director Wolfgang Peterson and the studio that released The Neverending Story. Still, were the two versions really all that different? I read the book recently to compare.

Film Review: ‘Breakthrough’ APRIL 8, 2019 9:00AM PT

“..“Breakthrough, which is based on Joyce Smith’s 2017 book “The Impossible: The Miraculous Story of a Mother’s Faith and Her Child’s Resurrection” (co-written with the Christian author and media personality Ginger Kolbaba), presents itself as the true story of a modern miracle. But it’s also a portrait of what religious faith looks like when there’s no pesky doubt to get in the way.

Dead for Over an Hour, Son Comes Back to Life cbn.com
“..“He’s been dead for 45 minutes.” These words met Joyce as she saw her son. On Monday, January 19, 2015, 14-year-old John Smith had spent the night with two friends,- Josh Rieger & Josh Sander – after winning a close basketball game the night before. John scored the winning shot. Joyce had spoken to John and was prepared to go pick him up when she got a chilling phone call minutes later from friend Cindy saying, “There’s been an accident.” John had fallen through the ice on Lake Saint Louise. First responders had pulled him out but “he didn’t have a heartbeat.” Stunned, after calling husband Brian & her sister, Joyce raced to the hospital praying all the way. Joyce burst into the ER as doctors feverishly worked to bring life back to John’s lifeless body. Sensing little hope, Dr. Stutterer finally told her, “You can go up and talk to your son.” “In that moment I knew I had to get desperate with my Lord. I had to get a hold of God and get a hold of him fast,” she says. Remembering a Beth Moore Bible study, she knew that the Holy Spirit had raised Christ Jesus from the dead. That same power was available to us. “All of a sudden, everyone and everything in that room faded away and it was just me and John and God. With a voice I thought was quiet, but that actually bellowed through the room, down the hallway, …. I declared, ‘I believe in a God who can do miracles! Holy Spirit, I need you right now to come and breathe life back into my son!” She closed her eyes and wept, and at that instant, she heard the sound of a miracle. John’s heart monitor sprang back to life. John’s recovery was slow but sure. Doctors expected and wanted to prepare the family that massive brain damage would affect him, but every test showed remarkable healing. His recovery defied every medical & scientific expectation, and 16 days later he walked out of the hospital under his own power, completely healed.

POWER OF PRAYER
Joyce knows that prayer really does work. As John lay in the hospital she marveled at how the Lord had brought John into her and Brian’s life unexpectedly when most parents were entering the empty nest stage. Looking back she remembered that at 17 years old she fell in love with a man six years older and a divorced father of two. Headstrong, she didn’t listen to her parents and became pregnant after high-school graduation. She was happy until Charlie told her to get rid of it. She hid her pregnancy, wearing baggy clothes, etc, and turned down a music scholarship for college thinking she would get married. Charlie never changed so she agreed to give the baby up for adoption. She never told her parents. He took her to a hospital where the doctor induced labor. “I gave birth to a baby boy with a round, chubby face, huge blue eyes, and a light covering of blond hair on his head,” she says. She adored him. On the third day she awoke and her baby boy was gone, taken away. “I begged for death to take me, as I sobbed into my pillow,” Joyce says. It was four days later her stunned parents found out she had given birth and had not told them. She did stay with Charlie and a subsequent pregnancy lead them to marry. During the hard years of this marriage Joyce turned to God again in her life. He answered her prayer and she didn’t miscarry her son Tom. She went back to church but eventually divorced Charlie.

A single mom with two boys, she met Brian who loved her boys and they married. Brian, a videographer, had a heart for missions and went on several trips . His heart for the children lead them to seek to adopt a child. In February 2000 they adopted a little five-and-a-half-month old baby boy from Guatemala they named John when she was 49 & Brian 46 years old! So much joy! Strangely Joyce never told Brian about giving up her first son for adoption. Never sure how he would take it. But one day when John was three years old, as she did devotions God spoke to her heart – I want you to find your son. She went to the computer. Miraculously, He led her step-by-step and within 10 days she had found and spoke with her son. Less than two weeks later she says, “I met my sweet son Joe for the second time in my life. And he was everything I hoped and prayed he would be.” Brian had proved to be so welcoming in hearing of her oldest son.

TOTAL RESTORATION
Joyce continues to marvel at the goodness and grace of God. He totally restored her oldest son and family to her. John is doing remarkably well, is totally restored, a good student with a 3.5 gpa and is very articulate. If we have just a little bit of faith, He will do wonders. She says it could be that God healed John over two weeks so that man would exhaust all his efforts. God restores hope. People want to see a God who cares and is above all things. She thanks God for the role of adoption in her life, restoring Joe to her and bringing them John. He cares for the hopeless and the lost, and adopts us into His family. Joyce just wants people to know that God does the impossible, she says. Their story is slated to be made into a movie by Devon Franklin and 20th Century Fox.

Stephen Curry to Executive Produce Faith-Based Drama ‘Breakthrough’ (Exclusive) (Exclusive)

The move, which was finalized several months ago, is one of the first for Curry’s burgeoning media career and one of the first to be revealed since the Golden State Warrior point guard officially launched his banner, Unanimous Media, earlier this year.

“..NBA superstar Stephen Curry has quietly come aboard Breakthrough, a faith-based drama from Fox 2000, as an executive producer, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

The move, which was finalized several months ago, is one of the first for Curry’s burgeoning media career and one of the first to be revealed since the Golden State Warriors point guard officially launched his banner, Unanimous Media, earlier this year.

Unanimous, which has an overall film and TV deal with Sony Pictures Entertainment, is developing many of its own projects, but Curry couldn’t pass up getting involved with Breakthrough since it dovetailed with his own focus on faith and family-friendly material.

Based on a book by Joyce Smith titled The Impossible, Breakthrough tells the true story of how Joyce’s son, John Smith, fell through the ice and drowned, and was declared legally dead. A hour later, however, the basketball-loving 14-year-old was miraculously revived through the power of prayer…”

“Breakthrough” tells the true story of one of the most miraculous recoveries ever. John Smith was just 14 years old when he fell through an icy Missouri lake in 2015. After being rescued from the frigid waters, John was rushed to a local hospital, where, with no pulse for nearly 45 minutes, he was declared dead. But then something remarkable happened: He woke up. The incredible tale is being retold, Hollywood-style, in “Breakthrough,” starring Chrissy Metz and Josh Lucas.

Electric Chair

Thomas Edison, George Westinghouse, and the Invention of the Electric Chair (2002)

First execution by electric chair. William Kemmler, the first executed in the electric chair

In 1889, New York’s Electrical Execution Law, the first of its kind in the world, went into effect, and Edwin R. Davis, the Auburn Prison electrician, was commissioned to design an electric chair. Closely resembling the modern device, Davis’ chair was fitted with two electrodes, which were composed of metal disks held together with rubber and covered with a damp sponge. The electrodes were to be applied to the criminal’s head and back.

On August 6, 1890, William Kemmler became the first person to be sent to the chair. After he was strapped in, a charge of approximately 700 volts was delivered for only 17 seconds before the current failed. Although witnesses reported smelling burnt clothing and charred flesh, Kemmler was far from dead, and a second shock was prepared. The second charge was 1,030 volts and applied for about two minutes, whereupon smoke was observed coming from the head of Kemmler, who was clearly deceased. An autopsy showed that the electrode attached to his back had burned through to the spine.

Dr. Southwick applauded Kemmler’s execution with the declaration, “We live in a higher civilization from this day on,” while American inventor George Westinghouse, an innovator of the use of electricity, remarked, “They would have done better with an axe.”..”

JP MORGAN

J.P. Morgan – Biography and Life Story – 360p

British Secret Service Agent J. P. Morgan reformation.org
J.P. Morgan tried to keep the entire world in the DARK by sabotaging Tesla’s AC current!!
“…Morgan fought a ferocious war against AC current!!

Today, 3 phase alternating current electrifies the entire world. What most people don’t know is that J. P. Morgan and his crony Thomas Edison fought a ferocious battle against alternating current. It is called the War of the Currents, and lasted from 1885 to 1912…

Edison was clueless about the great benefits of AC.

In 1884, a young Serb immigrant named Nikola Tesla introduced him to his AC motor.

Edison and his boss Morgan completely rejected this revolutionary invention…

Tesla worked for many months and finally the problem was solved. Did Edison keep his promise and pay him for all his hard work?. . . absolutely not….Tesla quit the Edison Company in disgust:

For a paltry few thousand dollars they lost not only a man who would have saved them many times that amount each year, but they also lost an opportunity to obtain world control of the greatest and most profitable electrical invention ever made. (O’ Neill, Prodigal Genius, p. 58).
After quitting the Edison Company, Tesla had to work as a manual laborer for a year digging the streets of New York. This was the worst time in his life as a poor stranger in a strange land….He was befriended by the foreman of the work gang who persuaded him to form his own company.

The first application of current was botched and Kemmler did not die until the current was fired up a second time. When he was dead, the Morgan owned newspapers (New York Times) said that he had been “Westinghoused.”

Thank God that this desperate, deadly gambit by Morgan and Edison failed to turn people away from AC and eventually AC triumphed over DC and became the standard universal current…

J. P. Morgan owned the Titanic!!

Colonel John Jacob Astor IV was a close friend and financier of Tesla. Tesla lived at his hotel, the Waldorf Astoria, in New York City.

Tesla’s wireless transmission of electricity offered free electricity to the entire world. That was just too much for Morgan and the Bank of England. They wanted to control all forms of energy around the world.

..
Only months after Morgan’s death, the corrupt 3rd Bank of the “United States” was chartered; and in 1917 the United States was lured into war in Europe by MI6.

Electricians, engineers, clerks, surveyors, heads of departments and mechanics are found in the ranks of this organization, a delightful fellowship pervading the whole. Many of the members are college graduates, coming from such standard schools as the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cornell University, Yale, Harvard or University of Chicago. The features described, however, do not constitute the sole basis for the superiority of Wilmerding as an attractive residence quarter and as a town in general. The streets are excellently paved and kept as clean as can be and the business buildings erected of late bear the stamp of beauty as well as being perfectly adapted to their uses. The residence streets, particularly Marguerite Avenue, are beautiful with well kept shade trees and lawns and are lined with handsome, substantial houses. There are many artistic front yards in Wilmerding, thanks to the broad minded policy of the Westinghouse interests in offering annual prizes for the best examples of this kind. The company sets a signal example itself in the beautifying of the spacious grounds around the big office building. There are rows of magnificent plants of all kinds and beds of beautiful collas, all maintained in faultless condition by expert gardeners…”

Tesla never fully bucked his Christian indoctrination and at the very least, he acknowledged it, saying:

The gift of mental power comes from God, Divine Being, and if we concentrate our minds on that truth, we become in tune with this great power. My Mother had taught me to seek all truth in the Bible; therefore I devoted the next few months to the study of this work.5..”

‘Field of Dreams’ at 30: 5 things you never knew about the baseball classic from an ‘Exorcist’ connection to a lost James Earl Jones speech Ethan Alter
Senior Writer, Yahoo Entertainment

“..Three decades later, though, people have come back to Field of Dreams again… and again… and again. In fact, they’ll have another chance this weekend, when Fathom Events and TCM Big Screen Classics hosts a special 30th Anniversary screening on June 16 — Father’s Day — in theaters across the country. (An encore presentation is scheduled for June 18; visit Fandango or Atom Tickets for showtimes and ticket information.)

That date only makes sense as Field of Dreams isn’t just one of the most beloved sports movies of all time; it’s also become a rite of passage that dads share with their sons and daughters. Because as the emotional final scene drives home, the real subject of the film isn’t baseball — it’s what parents can teach children and children can teach parents. “I’m always grateful for it,” Robinson tells Yahoo Entertainment. “You always hope a movie is going to do well, but you can’t really count on that. It’s remarkable to me that we’re still talking about Field of Dreams.” Here are five remarkable things we learned about this one-of-a-kind movie…”

Field of Dreams is based on the book Shoeless Joe by W.P. Kinsella. Producers wanted to use the same name for the film but the studio thought people would think it was about a homeless man or hobo. Field of Dreams was chosen instead, which was fine with the author – he’d always wanted his book to be called The Dream Field…

“..Either way you look at it, the Oscar-nominated movie—which made its debut on May 5, 1989—is still being talked about more than a quarter-century later.

1. IT WAS BASED ON A BOOK CALLED SHOELESS JOE.
Field of Dreams writer-director Phil Alden Robinson loved W.P. Kinsella’s Shoeless Joe since the book was first published in 1982. Robinson continued working on the adapted screenplay, despite 20th Century Fox’s repeated insistence through the years that it wasn’t commercial enough. Eventually Robinson and producers Lawrence and Charles Gordon sold the screenplay to Universal…”

“..Brown played John Kinsella, a former minor league player and late father of Ray Kinsella, played by Kevin Costner. The two never reconciled after a rift when Ray was 17. They argued over the guilt or innocence of John’s idol, Shoeless Joe Jackson, one of eight White Sox players accused of throwing the 1919 World Series in a gambling deal, in what became known as the Black Sox Scandal.

Now an adult, Ray is the novice farmer who heard a voice saying the movie’s other famous tagline, “If you build it, he will come.” Believing the “he” to be Jackson, Ray builds the ball diamond, against all the warnings that he’d go bankrupt tearing up the cornfield.

Spoiler alert: At the movie’s end, Ray discovers the “he” actually refers to his father, who has emerged with the other ghost players for a game there. After an awkward meeting between father and son, as John turns to disappear back into what’s left of the cornfield, Ray mends their broken hearts with a simple invitation: “Hey, Dad? You wanna have a catch?”

Movie Reflection: “Lion King”

Just finished watching the Disney’s “new version” of “Lion King” late last night. We were just a few in the movie theater as it was a late night showing (9pm) 3D special . I was hoping to watch it back in Morris, but the weather was too nice out and had plans every evening last week.

I knew the plot of the movie already, but I was anticipating on how they did this “remake” in more “real life” animation version. I was very pleased how they made, it, but somehow got a “revelation” watching it “again”.

Predator Hierarchy | Southern African Safaris | Classic Africa .classicafrica.com
“..As a rule, lions rule supreme, both by virtue of their sheer physical strength, and because of the co-ordinated power of the lion pride. Through cooperative hunting efforts, lions are essentially the only predators capable of taking prey up to the size of Cape buffalo, hippos, giraffe, and even sub-adult elephants. It is a myth that only females can hunt – male lions are in fact very successful hunters, but they avoid it as far as possible as they must conserve energy to defend their territories. Typically, females do most hunting but are displaced from the kill by pride males; once the males are satiated, the females will feed, and cubs eat last.

Next in line are Spotted hyenas. Still largely misunderstood, hyenas are not just scavengers but very successful hunters in their own right. Although they are also highly social, hyenas differ from lions in several respects. Firstly, they are dogs, and the hyena clan is dominated by females, who are physically larger and more aggressive than the males. Usually, hyena clans are not capable of driving a pride of lions from a kill, provided a mature male lion is present; if, however, no pride male is present and hyenas outnumber lionesses and sub-adults by a ratio of four to one, hyenas will carry the day..”

“..Their deliverer came at last from the tribe of Dan. In the small town of Zorah there lived a man by the name of Monoah; his wife was childless. One day an angel appeared to her, declaring that she would become the mother of a son who should, in due time, save the Hebrews from the hand of the Philistines. The boy was from his birth to be dedicated to G‑d as a Nazirite; no razor was ever to touch his hair. Amazed by what she heard, she told it to her husband, who devoutly prayed for another appearance of the Divine messenger. The vision was repeated, and the angel announced again, this time both to Monoah and his wife, the birth of the wondrous child, and renewed his former injunctions.

In due course the child was born, and was named Samson. At an early age, Samson realized that he possessed remarkable strength with which he was able to accomplish superhuman feats. Once he was confronted by a young lion, and without exerting much effort, tore it apart. Realizing that he had been endowed with this strength in order to help his people, Samson sought the occasion to vent his anger on the enemy. ..”

Who was Dagon in the Bible? gotquestions.org
” Answer: Dagon was the chief deity of the Philistines, and the worship of this pagan god dates back the third millennium BC. According to ancient mythology, Dagon was the father of Baal. He was the fish god (dag in Hebrew means “fish”), and he was represented as a half-man, half-fish creature. This image furthered an evolutionary belief that both men and fish had evolved together from the primal waters. Dagon may also have been the provider of grain. So Dagon was similar to many other idols in that he personified natural forces that had supposedly produced all things…”

5. The Hands of Dagon and the Hand of God (1 Samuel 5:1-7:17) bible.org
“..It may appear to the Israelites and to the Philistines that God is now being held hostage by Israel’s enemies. Israel has been defeated in an initial battle with the Philistines, suffering the loss of about 4,000 lives (1 Samuel 4:1-2). The Israelites are wondering how their God could allow them to suffer this defeat, concluding that it is because they did not take the Ark of God into battle with them. Like a large good luck charm, they believe the presence of the Ark will make the difference. Confidently, the Israelites commence fighting. Fearfully, the Philistines rise to the challenge, dreading that it might mean death or defeat for them. Instead, it leads to an even greater defeat for the Israelites. Our text tells us that 30,000 foot soldiers are killed, along with the two priests, Hophni and Phinehas. When Eli learns that his sons are dead and that the Ark has been captured, he falls from his seat, breaking his neck and dying when he falls. He is followed in death by his daughter-in-law as she gives birth to the son she names Ichabod (gone is the glory), in light of the Ark being taken. ..”

When they stood him among the pillars, 26 Samson said to the servant who held his hand, “Put me where I can feel the pillars that support the temple, so that I may lean against them.” 27 Now the temple was crowded with men and women; all the rulers of the Philistines were there, and on the roof were about three thousand men and women watching Samson perform. 28 Then Samson prayed to the Lord, “Sovereign Lord, remember me. Moreover, he is a prolific photographer and painter, and has been invited to speak at many conferences and retreats on various topics of faith. Most importantly, however, he is a loving husband and father of four. I’ve been blessed to know them for the last ten years, and he has taught me many things in that time. I recently had the chance to sit down with Tom and interview him about his faith journey, his road to Hollywood, and how his Catholic faith influences his work…”

Why Crispin Glover never did Back To The Future Part II denofgeek.com
“..You don’t need us to tell you that Crispin Glover was one of those who appeared in Back To The Future, but never returned for the sequels. Why? Well, depending on who you’re talking to do, it had to do with money, Glover not wanting to do it, Robert Zemeckis not wanting him, difficult behavior, or perhaps a dodgy horoscope. And a lawsuit. Who knows?…

Before he got to that, he touched on the fact that he appeared in Back To The Future Part II without his consent, and how unhappy he was with that. “They had taken the moulds of my face”, he said, “from the old age make-up from the original movie and put another actor into prosthetics that were made from my face, and interspliced with a very small amount of footage of me from the original movie in order to fool audiences into thinking I was in the movie”, he recalled. This led to a Crispin Glover winning a lawsuit that prevents such a thing happening again.

..

“I was asking questions that the producers, director didn’t like. There was a different end … I had questions about it, and it did get changed”, he recalled.

He noted that he wasn’t the only person asking questions about the original ending “It had to do with money, and what the characters were doing with money … I said to Robert Zemeckis I thought it was not a good idea for our characters to have a monetary reward, because it basically makes the moral of the movie that money equals happiness”. Glover argued “the love should be the reward”, and “Zemeckis got really mad” over Glover’s questioning….

He did refute something that producer and co-writer Bob Gale is said to have said. Gale apparently said that “I had asked for the same amount of money as Michael J Fox … it’s a total fabrication”. Money was still a problem, though. “I wanted to be in the movie, but the offer was less than half of what Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson – who had similar sized roles – it just wasn’t fair”…”

MICHAEL’S STORY michaeljfox.org
“..Though he would not share the news with the public for another seven years, Fox was diagnosed with young-onset Parkinson’s disease in 1991. Upon disclosing his condition in 1998, he committed himself to the campaign for increased Parkinson’s research. Fox announced his retirement from “Spin City” in January 2000, effective upon the completion of his fourth season and 100th episode. Expressing pride in the show, its talented cast, writers, and creative team, he explained that new priorities made this the right time to step away from the demands of a weekly series. Later that year he launched The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which the New York Times has called “the most credible voice on Parkinson’s research in the world.” Today the largest nonprofit funder of Parkinson’s drug development in the world, the Foundation has galvanized the search for a cure for Parkinson’s disease, and Michael is widely admired for his tireless work as a patient advocate…”
