“..Sometimes, it is simply because shaming has grown to be so automatic that it becomes difficult to identify the instances in which we are engaging in body-shaming. Here are nine ways in which we inadvertently body-shame. Once these become easily identifiable, we can work toward stopping, questioning, and correcting those thoughts…”

Though it certainly has positive aspects, it is important to note that this does not mean being body-focused is entirely positive. Seeing others as lacking agency may make them seem easier to control, less moral, or incapable of making decisions. But it certainly provides something to think about when choosing your next outfit..”

Is Social Media Giving Your Teen a Negative Body Image?
By Caroline Knorr 4/28/2014 commonsensemedia.org

As if adolescence weren’t painful enough, the pressure to be “camera-ready” may be adding to teens’ body dissatisfaction – and leading to self-destructive behavior.
“..Not too long ago, girls might have stressed about being “bikini-ready” every spring when the bathing suit magazines would hit the stands. And boys might have done a few extra pushups after seeing Wolverine’s abs. But now, thanks to photo-centric social media like Instagram, Snapchat and other messaging apps, kids are exposed to a constant drumbeat of bikini bodies, six-pack abs, and just-right hair 24/7. And it’s not just celebrities pushing idealized images of human perfection. It’s your teens’ friends posting pictures of themselves and one another for all the world to see and comment on. What’s worse, many of these moments are captured seemingly unplanned, increasing kids’ anxiety about looking “perfect” — but effortlessly so — at all times…”

Advertising Study Proves Naked Women Don’t Actually Sell Cheeseburgers ByJR Thorpe July 21 2017 bustle.com
“..A research group led by Dr. John Wirtz, head of the advertising faculty at the Center for Media at the University of Illinois, recently published an analysis of studies examining how consumers react to sexy ads, and the results were particularly notable: while male consumers had a more positive reaction to sexualized ads than female consumers, when it came to “purchase intention” — whether a consumer was interested in buying a specific product — the researchers found that the sexy ads had “no effect” on either group. As Wirtz said in a press release, “We found literally zero effect on participants’ intention to buy products in ads with a sexual appeal. This assumption that sex sells — well, no, according to our study, it doesn’t. There’s no indication that there’s a positive effect.”..”

Social Media Negative Effects On Body Image

Does social media impact on body image? 13 October 2014 By Philippa Roxby Health reporter, BBC News bbc.com
Magazines and television are often blamed for portraying an ideal body image that causes people to question their looks and lose confidence in themselves. But what about the role social media plays in moulding attitudes to the way we look?
“..”I’d always been tall, and I was a bit podgy too,” she says.

“I would have been subject to much more abuse if I’d had more friends on social media,” she says.

Kelsey describes the bullying she experienced between the ages of 11 and 16 as “absolutely awful”.

“It was all about my body and how I looked,” she says…

The Media’s Effect On Women’s Body Image Posted on July 30, 2017, at 11:19 p.m. claudiap4f1030a7e Community Contributor buzzfeed.com
“..According to an article by the University of the West of England, over 10 million photographs are uploaded to Facebook every hour, approximately a quarter billion every day. Many of these photos being shared online involve some form of editing to enhance body appearance. The use of photo editing software in mass media advertisements has been prevalent for more than two decades but with the increased use of social media to share photos, more and more people are using photo-editing apps to alter their online appearance. For example, men might edit their photos to enhance their muscular physique in an effort to meet a socially idealized appearance. Today, a major concern is not the idealized appearances of models in mass media but rather the idealized appearances that have developed on social media between peer groups. It is thought to be because mass media pictures are perceived to be unrealistically achievable, whereas the appearance of a friend seems more realistic..”

I Sent Pictures To A Boy I Liked And Shouldn’t Have

-Former Models

I gave up modeling for God By Post Staff Report April 24, 2013 | 4:00am nypost.com
“..“This is what Victoria’s Secret models do,” he said. “This is why they hired you. If you want to be like Gisele, this is what you have to do.”

That’s when it hit me. I was being paid to strip down and pose provocatively to titillate men. It wasn’t about modeling clothes anymore; I felt like a piece of meat.

The next day, I broke down and started sobbing. I was in my bedroom and dropped to my knees and started to pray.

“God, why did you have me win the Victoria’s Secret Angel competition if it was going to make me feel this way? I’m not honoring my husband. I just want answers!”

That was two years ago. Today, I’m living in Montana with my husband, enjoying the fresh air and volunteering with our church.

The old me would never have believed that I gave up my career for this quiet, country life. When I was a little girl growing up in Las Vegas, surrounded by billboards of half-dressed women, I dreamed of becoming a Victoria’s Secret Angel…

Over the next two years, New York really opened my eyes to the dark side of the modeling industry. One of my roommates was so bulimic she would involuntarily throw up when she ate. She would go to sleep crying every night and just look at herself in the mirror thinking that she was so fat. And she was so thin.

The ‘Glee’ Cast’s Tragic History: From Cory Monteith to Mark Salling By Anna Menta On 1/30/18 at 4:37 PM newsweek.com
“…In 2013, actor Cory Monteith’s sudden death of a drug overdose shocked Glee fans, who knew him as his popular jock character Finn Hudson. Now, nearly three years after creator Ryan Murphy’s musical dramedy about a high school glee club ended, the show’s fans are learning of the death of another of the its stars, Mark Salling, who played reformed bad boy Puck.

Salling died on Tuesday, at the age of 35. Authorities have ruled the death a suicide after finding his body hanging from a tree in a riverbed near his home in Sunland, California, according to a report from TMZ.

Montieth was 31 when he was found in a Vancouver hotel room. The actor had a history of drug abuse, and the coroner determined that his death was caused by lowered tolerance to drugs after a stint in a treatment facility for substance abuse. (Murphy had urged him to get help, temporarily writing him out of the series’ fourth season. He was promised a job when he recovered.) In a 2011 interview with Parade, Monteith discussed his teenage drug use: “Anything and everything, as much as possible. I had a serious problem.”

..On September 30, 2017, the actor pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography. He had been scheduled to be sentenced on March 7 and was facing four to seven years behind bars. The California prison system has come under fire recently for a shockingly high rate of deaths for child molesters (at the hands of other prisoners), and it’s possible that Salling was fearful of doing time.

But there’s more bad news for former Glee stars. Naya Rivera—who played cheerleader Santana Lopez—had a recent brush with the law. The 31-year-old was arrested and charged with misdemeanor domestic battery after an alleged physical altercation with her husband, Ryan Dorsey. According to a 911 call placed by Dorsey, Rivera was reportedly “drinking” and “out of control.” The couple filed for divorce in December, and this month the battery charge was dismissed at Dorsey’s request…”

Folks with Signs Along the Highway Exit Ramps Part 2

I met a guy (Saturday, February 21st 2015) name Robert Sherman (name uncertain), who was holding up a sign asking for donations along the popular I-94 exit ramp on Ruth Street (St. Paul). I was walking to Firestone to see if my car (air intake valve loose) was fixed. I hesitated at first on passing by him, but I remembered a share from a friend (Bobby) from church on sharing the “Good News”. I prayed and walked across the street to hear his story. He told me that he’s been on disability. Was incarcerated and been struggling to get a job. He repeatedly shared how it’s hard to not have people label you due to your “past mistakes”. He then told me is a Christian. I tried to encourage him, that God will provide. I asked him what he was “begging” money for and he shared, he needed some money to buy a t-shirt from Family Dollar Store and sugar to make Kool-Aid for his kids. I then “preached” about the health “negative” effects of that drink. He then told me, ” I can’t do anything about it if my kids want it” (he clarified that his kids were in their 20’s..lol! I then decided to go to Aldi’s next door and buy some “healthy foods’ (bag of apples, some granola bars, and a dark chocolate bar as a dessert ‘)….

He thanked me and I asked if I could do a short prayer for him, which he was willing to receive it after I gave him this stuff (earlier he asked for $1). He told me he took the city bus from E. 3rd St. just to get here and hopes to “make enough” $$ then he plans to go home. This happened on a Saturday morning around late teens to early 20’s (Farenheit), with sunny weather. ..

Folks with Signs Along the Highway Exit Ramps Part 1

I’ve driven by “homeless” folks many times over the countless years around the Twin Cities and debating how God can use me to “reach out” to them….

The Sheep and the Goats (Matthew 25 )https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew%2025&version=NIV41 “Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. 42 For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, 43 I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’44 “They also will answer, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?’45 “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.’46 “Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”*see http://smu.gs/1yENQyBMoviesThe Fourth Wise Man http://youtu.be/Jg8Gho7hsz4Good News Sociologyhttps://www.facebook.com/groups/139706352858524/

I can’t say this was the voice of God, but this was spoken to my heart through an idea through a conversation with a friend. During Halloween, I like to give out “healthy juice” drinks (w/various Bible verses) instead of candy, which I bought a whole bunch several months ago. I was debating in my spirit my involvement with this “pagan day” this year, which I decided to not turn the lights on, but have my juices ready in case someone comes over. Well, no one came at all this year, so I have all these juices left over. I was telling my friend this and the idea of giving it to these “folks with signs along the highway exit ramps” would be a blessing.

Well, the holidays visiting family was going to be a great time do it. When I arrived in the cities yesterday (CHRISTmas Day) morning, I had my juices ready (along with food). I forgot I had them in my back of my car until I saw this guy with a sign along the highway exit by my parent’s home in St. Paul. It would have to be a quick and give as there were going to be cars coming behind me coming off the highway (eastbound on I-94). I grab one of the juice bottles (w/Bible verse) and a carton of some bakery goods. I ran over to the corner with my car running and quickly gave these items to this guy. I asked what his name was, he replied “Ben…thank you!”. I ran to my car and said “God bless you” and got to my car in time before the car came behind me coming off the highway. I did a quick prayer for Ben and went “home” to visit family for the holidays.

Today (26th of December 2014), I had another opportunity on that same corner, but it was a different guy with a sign along the highway exit ramp (Ruth & I-94). I noticed this guy as I was heading across the highway bridge to drop my car off to get an oil change at Firestone. When I dropped my car off early this morning (8:30ish), I got a bag of one juice bottle w/Bible verse and my last carton of bakery goods. I took it with me as I walked back home to wait to get my oil change done. This time, I had the time to chat with this guy, so I walked across the street and gave these items (prayed for preparation earlier) to him. He was grateful as he said thank you as he put the bag down by some of his stuff as he continued to hold his sign. Being that curious talkative guy, I asked his name and he replied “Tom” . I then asked about why he is here, he replied-“I got laid off my job several months ago and sleeping over at a friend’s house nearby’ (paraphrase as I can’t remember exactly what he told me word for word). He then shared, he’ll be getting his Social Security benefits soon. I would later share about what brought me to town (visiting family for the holidays). Prior to our talk, the Bible verse on “Silver or Gold I don’t have, but I have Jesus”-Acts) came to me, so I decided to tell Tom about Him. He then repeatedly told me he is Christian. I then asked him if I can pray with him for God’s provision. He then replied, “I don’t feel like getting prayer right now….I’m not feeling well as I caught the flu”. In my mind, I had a feeling this guy had some “hurt” in the past and didn’t want anything to do with God. I then replied, “..well that’s the best time to get prayer because your sick?” as I smiled. He then repeated again he was a “Christian” already, so I decided to move on and didn’t want this guy to “blow-up”. As I walked away to go back “home”, he would repeat and shout again “I’m a Christian already” as I quietly prayed in my Spirit for him. If you are reading this, please pray for Tom and Ben too…thanks!
