Neutral Perspective: Should or shouldn’t Businesses have the “right” to refuse serving “particular groups” ?

The Right To Refuse Service? Businesses and Discrimination Louis Marlin — February 4, 2014 business2community.com
“..Restaurants and stores qualify as “public accommodations” even if they’re a private business. As such, discrimination laws apply just as much on private property and to private businesses as they do in any public place.

Whether you post a sign or not, businesses never have the right to refuse or turn away customers because of their race, gender, age, nationality or religion. In addition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, several states have their own civil rights legislation designed to prevent discrimination. The Americans with Disabilities Act also prohibits discrimination in public accommodations, making it illegal to refuse service to individuals who are disabled or handicapped…

..there are some valid reasons for asking customers to leave. Individuals or groups who are causing trouble or being disruptive may be asked to leave, while restaurants or other businesses with a capacity limit can turn away customers to prevent this limit from being exceeded. Businesses can also refuse service to those who come in just before closing time or to those who are not making any purchases during their visit. There are various other examples – the key thing to note is that in each example, the decision to refuse service is not arbitrary or based upon an individual’s specific characteristics. Declining to serve someone has to be reasonable and justifiable. If customers are not properly dressed, you can ask that they leave, but if a person is wearing reasonable religious apparel and you dislike their beliefs, you can’t use that as an excuse to send them on their way. ‘I Have the Right to Refuse Service’: Restaurant Owner Turns Away Group After He Learns What They Advocate

“..Fowler claims Sisters Gourmet Bistro in Van Buren, Ark., cancelled their reservations after its owner discovered what the group stood for.

“I called them and told them that I — we’re not going to have that at Sisters, we had no plans for that and there were no reservations to hold any kind of fundraiser or anything like that,” said owner Richard Hodo.

“I told them that I do not support their cause, that if they want to do that that’s their business. I do not care, but I don’t support their lifestyle and their cause,” he added.

Hodo told an organizer with the River Valley Equality Center that he runs a private business and that he reserves the right to deny any group or person service — whether that means saying “no” to white supremacists or a gay rights group…”

Deep Thought: Life Purpose- Just “graduated”..what now?

What are you going to “do” now? What are your plans after graduation? What’s next? These are just some of the many questions graduates (and even non-graduates too) ponder as they are frequently bombarded with by family members, friends, etc.. I “graduated” from college almost 19+ years ago and sometimes “ponder” some of these questions too. However, as one gets “older”, we tend to find more of that “purposeful life” as we grow (hopefully most of us) in “wisdom”. I decided to do this blog topic to “encourage” those in similar boats..

If you just recently graduated…congratulations!

You deserve the recognition and accolades! It’s a big accomplishment! I current and have been working with “high school dropouts” in getting their G.E.D. or high school diploma. One of my oldest student was in her 50’s! It’s not that easy for many due to the various different “life challenges” and circumstances each person faces. In fact, this leads to one possible idea on what to do “next”! Pay it forward, help (e.g. volunteer) someone in your local community (e.g. community ed) get their G.E.D. You know something that many people don’t and you can share that knowledge with others. This brings up to this video I recently found as a great start in that “journey” in finding that “purpose in life”..

How to know your life purpose in 5 minutes | Adam Leipzig | TEDxMalibu

Who YOU are?
1-What’s your #name (what does it mean)?
2-What are you “good” (#talents #skills) at?

3-Who do you do it for (How do you #serve them?)?
4-What do they want you #need (How can you #help people?)?
5-How do they #change or #transform what you give them? (#makeadifference) ?

#lifepurpose

#happypeople make other #happy

Did you find answers to all the questions above? Good! You are already on your way to a finding answers that many people my age or older don’t know already. I encourage you to share these answers with as many family members and close love ones. They might build on these answer and help direct you to the many questions you pondered earlier mentioned above or beginning of this blog.

Deep Thought: How to show “love” throughout the year?

What did you do for Valentines Day? Do you “celebrate” it? Why? What “holidays” do you observe throughout the years and do you ever re”searched” the “origins” (history)? Have you stopped afterwards?

Where Did Valentine’s Day Come From? Is It Wrong for a Christian to Celebrate It?

‘..The World Book Encyclopedia tells us regarding Valentine’s Day: ” “The customs connected with the day . . . probably come from an ancient Roman festival called Lupercalia which took place every February 15. The festival honored Juno, the Roman goddess of women and marriage, and Pan, the god of nature”” (1973, vol. 20, p. 204)…

Friendship and sending cards are wonderful things, and God is not opposed to romance at the right time in the right way. But does the pagan religious history of Valentine’s Day taint the modern practices? What does God have to say about observing pagan traditions, renamed or not?

“When the Lord your God cuts off from before you the nations which you go to dispossess … do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How did these nations serve their gods? I also will do likewise.’ You shall not worship the Lord your God in that way; for every abomination to the Lord which He hates they have done to their gods … Whatever I command you, be careful to observe it; you shall not add to it nor take away from it” (Deuteronomy 12:29-32)..”

What is the origin of Valentine’s Day, and should Christians celebrate it? gotquestions.org
“..Valentine died in approximately A.D. 270. Others claim the church may have decided to celebrate in mid February to “Christianize” the pagan Roman celebration Lupercalia. The first Valentine sent in the United States was in the 1840’s by Esther Howgald. Most of us enjoy “spoiling” a loved one on Valentine’s Day. Sending gifts and cards conveys love, affection, and friendship.

There is no biblical reason why Christians should not celebrate Valentine’s Day by giving their loved ones flowers, candy and/or cards. As with celebrating any holiday, the decision should be between the individual and God. Some people feel very strongly that observing any secular holiday is wrong, while others see it as harmless. The important thing to remember is that celebrating or not celebrating holidays should not be a cause for pride or division among Christians.

10 Simple but Powerful Reasons Christians Should not Celebrate Valentine’s Day joshuainfantado / January 27, 2016 becomingchristians.com
“..It is estimated that Americans spend about $20 billion on this single holiday alone, making it the second most expensive holiday next to Christmas.

However, the majority is not always right.

One must ask whether Christians should celebrate this day. Most importantly, what does God think about Valentine’s Day?

Before I proceed, let me tell you this SHOCKING TRUTH: Valentine’s Day should NOT be celebrated by Christians.

In this post, let me share the reasons why this is so. Let me make it as simple as possible for everyone to understand. Here are the 10 reasons Christians should not celebrate Valentine’s Day…

Reason no. 4: You can Celebrate Love without Valentine’s Day

Why do so many Christians limit their love on a specific day, in this case, Valentine’s Day? Wouldn’t it be great to demonstrate your love every single day?

Married couples or those who are in a relationship can show their love and concern every day and not wait for Valentine’s Day to arrive.

After all, even if you celebrate your love on Valentine’s Day, it really feels awkward since this day celebrates lust and not true love…..”

Sharing God’s Love in Our City’s Streets?

Do you ever encounter “homeless” people begging you for money whenever you walk the streets of a city or even driving around a neighborhood? What do you do? Do we walk pass them to ignore them? What would Jesus do?

Story 1

I admit, I have many times ignored these individuals because I was in a hurry or just had bad “judgment” on them. Well, last weekend I decided to “do something” . I was walking from

Target Field Hosts All-Star Game 2014http://salphotobiz.smugmug.com/Sports/baseball/MLB-Fan-Fest-2014

…to the Minneapolis Convention Center on a Sunday morning (July 13th 2014). I was there for the All-Star festivities (e.g. Fan Fest). As I was walking towards Nicollet Avenue, a guy came by walking besides me asking for money. I then told him I rather not give him money, but instead of food. He declined and asked for money to buy some food instead. Well, he was very persistent, which I kept being persistent. I then “tried” to quote a Bible verse “Silver or gold I don’t have, but I have Jesus” (paraphrased this because I forgot the exact order..lol).

Nicollet Avenue decorated with the All-Star Game theme for week of festivities.http://www.virtualtourist.com/travel/North_America/United_States_of_America/Minnesota/Minneapolis-813712/Things_To_Do-Minneapolis-Nicollet_Mall-BR-1.htmlhttp://www.downtownmpls.com/page/show/227787-shopjavascript:%20void(0);

Anyways, he just continued to walk with me to Nicollet Avenue as he shared his name (Isaac). I then smiled and replied, “that’s a name in the Bible”. He then said, “I know, I’m already born-again and saved” (I questioned myself in thought, “what is he doing here then?”). Anyways, I know we all go through some “wildernesses”, so I wanted to help this guy out to build his faith too. I asked him about his background, which he told me he already has a job. However, it’s only with a temp agency. I’ve had jobs with temp agencies before, so I somewhat can relate. I asked him what he’s good at , but he was persistent about the money thing again. Along the walk, I noticed a street preacher (lady) reading Bible verses, which is the same corner where I’ve seen others before. I thought to my self that this is so ironic! I then told him to come to Morris where there are many jobs available. He said, he might do this in the future. I then asked about his family, which he told me he has siblings in Indiana. I asked what made him move here from there. He replied, the “jobs opportunities”.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

We then sat down in a bench where there were other “homeless” people around the area getting ready for the “big day” to beg for money. I told him I would love to pray for him about his current circumstances, which he obliged. I was chatting too much as I was holding his hand about to pray that he told me, “I thought we were going to pray together”. I stopped talking and started praying for him with a smile. He then persistently ask for money again, so I told him “no” and took him to the Walgreens around the corner. I told him he can get whatever he “needs”, so he shopped around and picked a deli sandwich and a snack (?). I even told him to get a drink as it’s supposed to get warm later on. He picked a drink and kindly double checked if he can get one. We then went to the counter and I bought his items As we left the store, I gave him more encouraging words (forgot what I said) as he joined his peers by the bench we were sitting before to pray.

I then continued my way to the Minneapolis Convention Center for Fan Fest 2014!

Story 2

I had to share this story because this was another unique individual homeless guy. I was walking to church (St. Paul Cathedral) with my parents last evening for mass (church service). I noticed this “homeless” guy fixing his bicycle that was upside down-along with his personal stuff on the side of the sidewalk besides the church entrance. I was about to ask if he needed help, but I just continued to walk past him and up the stairs to the entrance. I was inclined to turn around, but decided to do so after we got to our pew after the “procession” (priest and team walking from the back to the front and do an intro) in the church building. During this time, I thought of that “forward email story” about the church people passing by this homeless guy and no one did anything. The “church people” didn’t realize that homeless guy was actually their “new pastor” , which he would later share..that’s it-that was the “sermon message” itself..

Church Mistreats Homeless Man Who is Pastor in Disguise

Churchgoers Ignored the Pleas of A ‘Homeless’ Man. An Hour Later They Cried from Shame. TeamGodVine last update 07/09/2017, 11:06 PM godvine.com
“…A Pastor transformed himself into a homeless person and went to the 10,000-member church that he was to be introduced as the head pastor at that morning. He walked around his soon to be church for 30 minutes while it was filling with people for service, only 3 people out of the 7-10,000 people said hello to him. He asked people for change to buy food – no one in the church gave him change…
He went into the sanctuary to sit down in the front of the church and was asked by the ushers if he would please sit in the back. He greeted people to be greeted back with stares, dirty looks, and people looking down on him. As he sat in the back of the church, he listened to the church announcements and such. When all that was done, the elders went up and were excited to introduce the new pastor of the church to the congregation. “We would like to introduce to you our new Pastor.” The congregation looked around clapping with joy and anticipation. The homeless man sitting in the back stood up and started walking down the aisle. The clapping stopped with all eyes on him. He walked up the altar and took the microphone from the elders (who were in on this) and paused for a moment then he recited,

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.

“For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ ‘The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”

After he recited this, he looked towards the congregation and told them all what he had experienced that morning. Many began to cry, and many heads were bowed in shame. He then said, “Today I see a gathering of people, not a church of Jesus Christ. The world has enough people, but not enough disciples. When will YOU decide to become disciples?” He then dismissed service until next week.

Following in the footsteps of Jesus Christ should be more than just talk. It ought to be a lifestyle that others around you can love about you and share in.” Be a Christian all you want, but at least follow the teachings of Christ if you’re going to claim the title.

Matthew 25:35-45…”

Well, I felt the urge to to be used by God to reach out to this man in case no one else did by the “church building”. When I went down the stairs, I noticed this guy was ready to head out as his bicycle was in the upright position and all his belongings that was scattered was all packed up. I went over and asked if his bicycle was all fixed. He told me, yes and explained what was wrong (e.g. loose chain). He would not stop talking after that as he would end up sharing a lot about his situation after some “curiosity” question…

“Name is Patrick and originally from Des Moines-Iowa. I have been traveling all over the country. I plan to stay at a motel in Cottage Grove (Sal: “I told him that the bike trail from downtown to Cottage Grove is block due to construction”. I knew this before as I tried to ride my bike from where my parents live in the East Side to Downtown St. Paul). Would you be able to drive me? (Sal: “I told him that I would if I had a bigger vehicle and I explained to myself that I’m in the middle of “mass” with my parents). He then shared that he knows the people at the motel and then started sharing about his past-” I have to be careful of girls/ladies, I have to keep out of trouble (Sal: thinking that he was in trouble in the past and running away from it). I did drugs, like meth and other types of drugs… (Sal: He mention others, but can’t remember)…(Sal: He was non-stop in telling me some other stuff that I don’t remember what else he shared). He knew I just came from church, so he shared about Christians he has met (Sal: I noticed an African American guy just walking away after chatting with him and Patrick just put a Bible with his “stuff” packed in the back of his bicycle)…

..I started to grow in compassion for him with discernment (asking God what to do and say as I didn’t want to be lied too as I have been with past conversations with homeless people). I shared earlier how he has a cool name and I reminded him of “St. Patick”, which I wasn’t able to share more as he was “non-stop” in chatting /sharing with me. I noticed my time was long and my parents were probably wondering where I am. I didn’t want to leave without at least praying for him. I asked if I could pray for him, so I quickly did . I was closing my eyes, but opened to realize he started to kneel. I felt like I should’ve kneeled with him. I remembered one of the teaching at a church conference to pray with people in the “same level” as a sign of humility. I felt bad I didn’t as I wondered what people around me were thinking. After praying for him, I decided to give him some “change” (cash) to help him out . I then told him to stay away from those drugs with a smile :), which he told me he will and started to chat more. I showed him with my body movements that I had to leave, which I felt I could’ve stayed longer to hear more of his story. I had so many questions based on what he already shared. For example, what drew him to the streets? I felt like something bad he did and left/ran away from home because of shame. I forgot to pray about that, so let’s pray together…

“Heavenly Father, we lift Patrick up to you. We ask that You personally reveal your compassion to him and heal him of any past hurts. May you used another follower of Yours to share the “Good News” with him. We pray that the “seeds of faith” that others and I have shared will grow..in Jesus’ name..Amen”

Thanks for praying for me. I actually have been praying for him before writing this blog as there were other things I wished I could’ve done to “reach out” to him more. It seems like God has really touched my heart this past week about “reaching out to” homeless people with other related events (e.g. Prior to mass last night, I shared various videos of “reaching out” to homeless people after I won free tickets to this music event earlier last month that was given by this Christian non-profit organization called “Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities“..

I forgot to tell him about this homeless shelter with the few chance to share/talk as he was a “chatter box”. I was able to tell him about Minnesota Teen Challenge after he shared about his drug use and later “alcohol” use (shared that he’s been sober for 6 months). This was part of my prayer that God will protect him from temptation and the addiction.

Well, that was my personal story this unique encounter. When I returned back to mass, I came in the middle of the priest’s message (e.g. important to talk with God at least 10 minutes a day…) as I missed the 3 readings. My parents never asked where I went too as I was going to share until they asked me, but I probably should since I remembered my mom asking earlier today, “are you mad for some reason..?”. I didn’t correlate the two as I thought it was about something else.

The following day (today), I went to my local church in St. Paul. The pastor shared in his message about reaching to those homeless people with signs (see one of my related stories-> Folks with Signs Along the Highway Exit Ramps Part 1 ) along the highway exit ramps. I just feel this has been a theme that God is trying to show me and the “church body” to NOT forget about these people. What about you?

What do you think? Did I do the “right” thing? Is this what Jesus would’ve done? Did I share God’s love? What could’ve I done better?

Deep Thought: Who are the “victims” of marital disputes?”

Personal Story (see more)

When I was growing up in St. Paul, my parents fought all the time. They told me it was natural as parents as they try to convey their issues and work it out together. There were times where I got really bothered hearing them fight. In fact, it affected my social life going to school. I was very quite, shy, and passive somehow when I was with my friends or classmates. It seem like I was holding-up this anger inside and I didn’t know where to release it-really didn’t have anyone to confide or talk to about how I felt.

I remember several times my mom would say “I want a divorce” or “I don’t know why I married your dad”. This really hurted me because I didn’t want to see my dad or mom to separate. I remember saying this a couple of times as I matured, “You two brought us (my siblings and I) to this world together, so you need to stay together to bring us into the world! Then you can get divorce, but till then you need to finish the job you started”. Looking back at this, I personally feel parents have to be careful what they say in front of their kids. I wished my mom had another adult she could express our feelings to. I feel parents need that extra support or sometype of fellowship of other adults that are close to share; instead of their kids. Parents need to model for their children. Children are the real victims of their parents actions: adulther, divorce, abuse, etc…It’s sad that they can’t just speak up on how they feel!

Lyrics: (Psalm 139, Philippians 4:6-7, Habakkuk 3:17-19, James 1:5-8)

What do you think about when you look at me
I know we’re not the fairytale you dreamed we’d be
You wore the veil, you walked the aisle, you took my hand
And we dove into a mystery

How I wish we could go back to simpler times
Before all our scars and all our secrets were in the light
Now on this hallowed ground, we’ve drawn the battle lines
Will we make it through the night

It’s going to take much more than promises this time
Only God can change our minds

Maybe you and I were never meant to be complete
Could we just be broken together
If you can bring your shattered dreams and I’ll bring mine
Could healing still be spoken and save us
The only way we’ll last forever is broken together

How it must have been so lonely by my side
We were building kingdoms and chasing dreams and left love behind
I’m praying God will help our broken hearts align
And we won’t give up the fight

For Parents of Estranged Adult Children

To the Sons and Daughters of Divorce Article by Paul Maxwell Regular Contributor desiringgod.org
“…Children with divorced parents have experienced a different kind of violent, traumatic collision. And every child of divorce must likewise walk a path of healing. It will, of course look different for different sons and daughters, but no one can deny that the emotional and relational bleeding needs attention, likely long after the papers are filed.

A chorus of adults with long-divorced parents will dismiss in unison: “I’m not broken, thanks very much. I’m not a project. I’m fine. It’s not even a big deal. I’m not a victim, and it certainly doesn’t deserve this much attention.” I totally get that. Depending on the day, I might say the same thing if I read my first two paragraphs.

My parents divorced when I was nine. I’m not a victim, but the break still broke me. It wounded me in ways I could not control. Years later, because I didn’t have the resources to work through things as a nine-year-old boy, certain forms of brokenness seem native and normal to me.

“The break that happens between mom and dad in divorce happens within the child.”

Divorce “attacks the self, because the self is formed within the belonging and meaning provided by the family. When it is destroyed, the threat of lost place and lost purpose becomes a reality. Without place or purpose, one becomes a lost self” (Andrew Root, Children of Divorce, ..”

Testimony of 6 year old girl whose parents divorced

“Published on Sep 22, 2015

My wife and I are sharing this short yet powerful testimony of a little girl who is struggling with the battle taking place between her Dad and Mom. As I watched it today, I was very inspired, as well as saddened, for although the little girl’s heart’s desire is right . . . she did not know how to fix a seemingly impossible dilemma. So many of God’s children are struggling, and although they may sincerely desire for their marriage healed and restored, they often do not realize what it is they are literally fighting against, nor where the fight is coming from . . . My wife and I know all to well from personal experience what this battle is like. For we wrestled for years to overcome, yet it seemed no matter how hard we “tried,” nothing seemed to really work. Looking back now, I clearly see that we were “fighting” in the flesh, rather than the power of God’s Spirit ! For our Father in heaven has given each of us great Light from His Word, and above all, this assurance . . . “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal (weak and human), but mighty (full of power and possible) through God . . . to the pulling down of strongholds; casting down imaginations, and every high thing (those spirits, and powers of the air) that exalts itself against the knowledge (knowing – John 17:3) of God . . . And bringing into captivity every thought to the perfect obedience of Christ !” II Corinthians 10:4-5 & ref: Ephesians 2:2 “We wrestle not against flesh and blood (not our spouse, nor even our own), but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness* of this world . . . against spiritual wickedness in the heavens . . . Wherefore my brother and sister, take unto you the whole armour of God (Deity – II Peter 1:4), so that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day . . . and having done all, to stand ! . . . . Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with the Truth (John 17:17), and having on the breastplate of righteousness (Jeremiah 23:5-6) . . . And your feet shod with the preparation (ointment) of the Glad Tidings of Peace . . . And above all, taking the shield of faith . . . and faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God (Romans 10:17) . . . wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one (Satan, the devil) . . . And take the helmet of your Salvation (that deliverance, freedom and healing wrought and complete for you by the Lord Jesus Christ), and the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God . . . !” Ephesians 6:12-18 “For it is not by might, nor by power . . . but by My Spirit saith the LORD of hosts !” Zechariah 4:6 “And the Words that I speak unto you, they are Spirit, and they are Life !” John 6:63 and ref: Isaiah 55:8-11 We pray that this little girls testimony will touch you. And I encourage you also to watch the story of the miracle which the LORD did in our lives, and is more than willing also to do in yours, if you will seek Him with all your heart, and fight the good fight of faith !
