WaPo Issues Correction after Falsely Labeling Nathan Phillips a Vietnam Vet [The National Review]
Jack Crowe
,The National Review•January 22, 2019 news.yahoo.com
“…Phillips initially told the Post and a number of other prominent media outlets that he was surrounded and harassed by a group of MAGA hat-wearing students from the all-male Covington High School in Kentucky while he was peacefully demonstrating near the Lincoln Memorial during the annual March for Life on Saturday. That account, which was supported by a partial and misleading video clip of the incident, went viral and led to the targeted harassment of the boys and their families.

Phillips, who conceded that he initiated the confrontation after the more complete video footage became available, also appears to have misled reporters about his military service, as he was described as a Vietnam veteran by Vogue and the Detroit Free Press, and, in an interview with CNN, he described himself as a “Vietnam-times veteran.”..”

Native American activist Nathan Phillips has a criminal record By Yaron Steinbuch January 24, 2019 | 9:18am | Updated nypost.com
“..Phillips actually spent most of his time in the Marines as a refrigerator technician after initially being an anti-tank missileman for four months, had not been deployed outside the US and never saw combat, according to the corps…

Phillips, who has described himself as a “Vietnam times veteran,” told the Washington Post in 2000 that he had been “a Marine Corps infantryman,” without mentioning that he had been a refrigerator tech for most of his service….

Phillips stood toe to toe with Nick Sandmann, who was wearing a red “Make American Great Again” cap, moments after the 16-year-old and his classmates ran into several members of the Black Hebrew Israelites.

Phillips, who had just attended an Indigenous Peoples March, has said he approached the students to try to defuse the tension between them and members of the radical group.

Sandmann — whose family quickly hired the Louisville-based public relations firm RunSwitch PR — on Wednesday denied that he was “disrespectful” toward the elder after he was criticized online for appearing to smirk at Phillips.

He also told NBC’s “Today” show that he’d like a sitdown with Phillips, who has offered to visit the Kentucky school to lead a dialogue about cultural understanding.”

Why do we keep making the same mistake?

Tucker Carlson: Covington story was not about race but about people in power attacking people they’ve failed By Tucker Carlson | Fox News (January 22nd 2019) foxnews.com

“..But did the video really describe what happened? That should have been the first question journalists asked. Checking facts and adding context is what journalists are paid to do. It’s in the first line of the job description. Yet, amazingly, almost nobody in the American media did that.

That’s a shame, because there was a lot to check. The full video of what happened on Friday in Washington is well over an hour long. The four minutes that made Twitter don’t tell the story, but instead distorted the story. A longer look shows that the boys from Covington Catholic in Kentucky weren’t a roving mob looking for a fight. They were, in fact — and it shows it on the tape — standing in place waiting to be picked up by a bus.

As they waited there, members of a group called the Black Hebrew Israelites, a black supremacist…”

Movie: “Jumanji-Welcome to the Jungle” Reflection

I just watched this movie with my bro’s family and was very happy I saw it. This movie was better than I expected. The trailer doesn’t say it all. The movie had some “life lessons” that had me thinking and reevaluating more of my life. I decided to write about this while it is fresh in my mind and heart. Hope you readers can relate…

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) imdb.com
“..Four teenagers discover an old video game console and are literally drawn into the game’s jungle setting, becoming the adult avatars they choose. ..”

JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE – Official Trailer (HD) – YouTube

The movie started with a curious teen (Alex) that finds this video game console in the beach in the year of 1996 (note the “old school” video game console that looks like a “Super Nintendo”). Like all curious humans, we want to play with it (“curiosity kills the cat”).

Now, the future went forward to a group of teens that get into detention and they find that same “game console” at the school. ..

Sal: After the movie, my “bro’s family” and I were talking about this particular scene. I opened up to them that I’ve been to detention back in my high school days..once only! I explained to them that it was for a “little thing”. I was tardy to school 3x, so I had to serve detention after school one day. I didn’t share the rest of the story, but detention might vary from school to school. But, the detention at my high school was just like having an “open classroom”. We brought our homework to this classroom and just sat there quietly for a certain period of time (can’t remember how long 30 minutes-60 minutes??). This might not be too bad for some people, but it wasn’t good for after school athletes. I can’t remember if I was playing sports at the time, but I remembered I had to take the city bus back home after school . I didn’t want to call my parents to pick me up because I didn’t want to let them know I had to stay after school for detention..lol!

Another similar story was being suspended from school. This happened when I was in “middle school”. I was in 6th grade and had to go to the principal’s office before being sent home early in the school day. I won’t share “exactly” what I or my friend and I did, but it was pretty “serious” 😦 Anyways, let’s get back to the movie :)..

During detention, these teenagers find that same game console that cause the disappearance of Alex back in 1996 (20 years ago). These teenagers are about to get their “character” or behavior issues (e.g. selfish, stuck-up, etc..-typical “teenager” attitudes) change with this “jumanji experience”

Life can be like a “jungle” as we are surrounded by vicious “wild animals” (e.g. evil people). We can sometimes even act like “wild animals” ourselves in our “bad days” as were are just “human” (e.g. sinful nature-> Deep Thought: What “causes” us to do “bad” (sin) stuff? goodnewseverybodycom.wordpress.com ). However, we need a Savior (call upon “Jesus”-just like how they had to call out “jumanji” at the end to finalize the game to win!).

Guns N’ Roses – Welcome To The Jungle – YouTube

I also reflected on the importance of individual’s gifts (e.g. talents, skills, spiritual -mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13 above, etc..) that God has given to each of us that we “need” to use and help each other. We can’t do this life on our own! We need each other!

“We have only one life” ! Use it to better the world and help the people around you!

It’s getting late..past midnight! To BE CONTINUED! Till then, what were your thoughts, personal stories, etc..?

Life Lessons

*spoiler alert

Time to reconcile and make peace after past “mistakes” or “broken relationships”! This movie ends with characters who are “elderly” making peace after past life grudges with one of them dying of cancer! 😦

Disney Character: Jafar-“Why M-E?”

I’ve been practicing the last month or so the lines of Jafar from “Aladdin” (theatrical play performance), which our performance (see “My first theatrical experience (Aladdin the Musical at the Park)”) will be this coming weekend (Friday & Saturday evenings) at a local park. It’s been a challenging character as I’ve had to act “selfishly”, which is something I’ve been trying to do the “opposite” since I became a Christian in my early college years. However, it’s been a fun role as I can relate to this character in various ways when I was younger.

We all can relate somehow to Jafar. Here is some lines that I thought of myself during my “junior high/middle school” years..

“…I was unappreciated by my peers. As their slings and arrows flew. I would ponder. Why me? Why Me?…broadwayjr.com

“Why Me?” Cut Song from Aladdin

Instead of “slings and arrows”, they were “spitballs and spit (a.k.a. “gleaking”) from my peers/bullies. Anyone ever been bullied?

Another song I made relating to this theme…

“It’s About Me” (Parody to “It’s All About You”) by Jafar

(see Music: Parody-“Creepy Old Cave” (originally from “I Can Show You the World” from Aladdin) by Jafar)

Instead of “pondering/dwelling” on how bad you might’ve got it growing up in your “earlier” years. I encourage you to think about others that might’ve got it “worse/more challenging”. This has helped me overcome my frustration of my “past”, which I feel has been a “cake walk” when I compare it with others that have had more difficulties…

I currently work with physically-mentally challenged adults and have been since I graduated from college. This job experience has really changed me to be a “better” person and it has taught me to take my eyes off of “myself” (e.g. own problems). Before I go to bed, I write down a list of “needs” I’ve read/watch/heard as a prayer request and then I jot down a list of what “I’m thankful” for. This nightly routine has also helped me to take my eyes of myself/me too!

What are your needs? Can I pray for you? What are you thankful for? Feel free to share down below to encourage others..
