Movie: “Jumanji-Welcome to the Jungle” Reflection

I just watched this movie with my bro’s family and was very happy I saw it. This movie was better than I expected. The trailer doesn’t say it all. The movie had some “life lessons” that had me thinking and reevaluating more of my life. I decided to write about this while it is fresh in my mind and heart. Hope you readers can relate…

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017) imdb.com
“..Four teenagers discover an old video game console and are literally drawn into the game’s jungle setting, becoming the adult avatars they choose. ..”

JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE – Official Trailer (HD) – YouTube

The movie started with a curious teen (Alex) that finds this video game console in the beach in the year of 1996 (note the “old school” video game console that looks like a “Super Nintendo”). Like all curious humans, we want to play with it (“curiosity kills the cat”).

Now, the future went forward to a group of teens that get into detention and they find that same “game console” at the school. ..

Sal: After the movie, my “bro’s family” and I were talking about this particular scene. I opened up to them that I’ve been to detention back in my high school days..once only! I explained to them that it was for a “little thing”. I was tardy to school 3x, so I had to serve detention after school one day. I didn’t share the rest of the story, but detention might vary from school to school. But, the detention at my high school was just like having an “open classroom”. We brought our homework to this classroom and just sat there quietly for a certain period of time (can’t remember how long 30 minutes-60 minutes??). This might not be too bad for some people, but it wasn’t good for after school athletes. I can’t remember if I was playing sports at the time, but I remembered I had to take the city bus back home after school . I didn’t want to call my parents to pick me up because I didn’t want to let them know I had to stay after school for detention..lol!

Another similar story was being suspended from school. This happened when I was in “middle school”. I was in 6th grade and had to go to the principal’s office before being sent home early in the school day. I won’t share “exactly” what I or my friend and I did, but it was pretty “serious” 😦 Anyways, let’s get back to the movie :)..

During detention, these teenagers find that same game console that cause the disappearance of Alex back in 1996 (20 years ago). These teenagers are about to get their “character” or behavior issues (e.g. selfish, stuck-up, etc..-typical “teenager” attitudes) change with this “jumanji experience”

Life can be like a “jungle” as we are surrounded by vicious “wild animals” (e.g. evil people). We can sometimes even act like “wild animals” ourselves in our “bad days” as were are just “human” (e.g. sinful nature-> Deep Thought: What “causes” us to do “bad” (sin) stuff? goodnewseverybodycom.wordpress.com ). However, we need a Savior (call upon “Jesus”-just like how they had to call out “jumanji” at the end to finalize the game to win!).

Guns N’ Roses – Welcome To The Jungle – YouTube

I also reflected on the importance of individual’s gifts (e.g. talents, skills, spiritual -mentioned in 1 Corinthians 13 above, etc..) that God has given to each of us that we “need” to use and help each other. We can’t do this life on our own! We need each other!

“We have only one life” ! Use it to better the world and help the people around you!

It’s getting late..past midnight! To BE CONTINUED! Till then, what were your thoughts, personal stories, etc..?

Movie: Star Wars -“The Last Jedi” Reflection

I just watched this movie this “morning”…yes, this morning! First time I can remember “ever” watching a movie in the morning! My friends and I drove 45+ minutes to a great “seat-reclining” theater (Alexandria, MN)..

When we got there (30 minutes prior to the showing and 15 minutes prior to it being opened), we were like one of the first ones to get there. Then a bunch of cars started coming. We decided to go fall in line 5 minutes prior to the time the doors will be opened. Later, we would be thankful that we did this as we got close to tickets being sold out for the 11:45am showing. We would’ve just had to wait another hour for the 2nd showing. However, being towards the end of tickets being nearly sold out, we had to pick seats up front in the very 1st row. Fortunately, the seats reclined, so we were able to lay our heads back and see much of the big screen a “little better”!

WARNING: Below will be a SPOILER ALERT if you haven’t seen this movie yet…

Important to get “both sides” of the story

I love the two different scene perspectives of the stories being told to Rey on “Why Kylo Ren turned to the “dark side”..

1st-Kylo Ren tells the story making “Luke Skywalker” look evil and “mad” (e.g. eyes all red , like Anikin Skywalker in the movie “Revenge of the Sith” ) when he was about to “kill” Kylo Ren..

Why Kylo Ren TURNED on LUKE (SPOILERS) – Star Wars the Last Jedi Explained

2nd-Luke Skywalker shares his version looking “normal” (with sadness too) as he is about to “kill” Kylo Ren before he turns over to the “dark side”

Rey then was able to conclude herself the whole story after hearing both sides. This is an important life lesson as “we” all tend to have misconceptions (see Deep Thought: Ever been misunderstood? goodnewseverybodycom.wordpress.com ) due to hearing only “one-side of the story”. This will lead to “miscommunication” and “false perceptions” on individual(s). Just like how wars start in real life, we “need” to hear both sides and “try” to make “peace”!

Sal: After the movie, my friends and I went to Grand Buffet in Alexandria. I thought it was very ironic that I got this “fortune” message..

Life Lesson: Humble yourself and ask directions when lost!

The other day (Friday, September 4th 2015), I was driving to a particular location that I thought would be easy to find. I used my camera and took a pic of a map I googled, but would find out later it wasn’t the most accurate pic.

I would end up driving almost an hour to finally reach my destination, which I was at a point where I was very frustrated (the hot weather also played a factor). I look back and ask God to forgive me for my impatience. Fortunately, I’m at a point in my life where I’ve grown a lot more patient and didn’t “hurt” anybody, which I would have regretted if I did.

Photo & Video Sharing by SmugMug

What happened was the pic (above) I took of the map wasn’t big enough to show the entry ramps before or after, so the location was too narrow to see a “bigger perspective”. One of the lessons I learned was to take two or more pics to show the “surrounding area”..

I stopped at two locations looking for directions…

1st-Forgot the name of the gas station and the exact location, but somewhere in Blaine around here (hwy 65 & 109th Avenue.) ..

The guy told me to continue east on 109th Avenue and look for Lexington Avenue, which leads me back to 35 W. I saw the map and realized I was very close to the prison if I continued west more on 109th. I left my physical map at home, which I need to remember to bring it next time.

Thank you to both people that helped me.

Got any similar stories of being lost? What was the feeling? Did you ask for help? Did you find your destination? How? Share your stories to encourage others as we all have had similar experiences 🙂

Disney Character: Jafar-“Why M-E?”

I’ve been practicing the last month or so the lines of Jafar from “Aladdin” (theatrical play performance), which our performance (see “My first theatrical experience (Aladdin the Musical at the Park)”) will be this coming weekend (Friday & Saturday evenings) at a local park. It’s been a challenging character as I’ve had to act “selfishly”, which is something I’ve been trying to do the “opposite” since I became a Christian in my early college years. However, it’s been a fun role as I can relate to this character in various ways when I was younger.

We all can relate somehow to Jafar. Here is some lines that I thought of myself during my “junior high/middle school” years..

“…I was unappreciated by my peers. As their slings and arrows flew. I would ponder. Why me? Why Me?…broadwayjr.com

“Why Me?” Cut Song from Aladdin

Instead of “slings and arrows”, they were “spitballs and spit (a.k.a. “gleaking”) from my peers/bullies. Anyone ever been bullied?

Another song I made relating to this theme…

“It’s About Me” (Parody to “It’s All About You”) by Jafar

(see Music: Parody-“Creepy Old Cave” (originally from “I Can Show You the World” from Aladdin) by Jafar)

Instead of “pondering/dwelling” on how bad you might’ve got it growing up in your “earlier” years. I encourage you to think about others that might’ve got it “worse/more challenging”. This has helped me overcome my frustration of my “past”, which I feel has been a “cake walk” when I compare it with others that have had more difficulties…

I currently work with physically-mentally challenged adults and have been since I graduated from college. This job experience has really changed me to be a “better” person and it has taught me to take my eyes off of “myself” (e.g. own problems). Before I go to bed, I write down a list of “needs” I’ve read/watch/heard as a prayer request and then I jot down a list of what “I’m thankful” for. This nightly routine has also helped me to take my eyes of myself/me too!

What are your needs? Can I pray for you? What are you thankful for? Feel free to share down below to encourage others..

Theatrical Performance: “Mary Poppins” (Musical) at Chanhassen Dinner Theatre was “Super…”

Wednesday, August 26th 2015 (Day Performance)

My workplace (Stevens County D.A.C.) took their annual trip to Chanhassen Dinner Theatre (Minneapolis, Minnesota) this past Wednesday (August 26th 2015). This year’s great performance was the “Mary Poppins” musical, which I (Sal) personally love musicals (e.g. singing, dancing, etc..)! Having grown-up watching the Disney movie for t.v., it was comparatively well-done to see the similar scenes in a “live” theatrical version. The actresses and actors did a superb job to make this movie made story come to performance in a “live” performance. Just can’t imagine the hard work they all do to make this show consistently great at almost two times a day (close to 7 days a week) for most of them.

It was fun to hear the familiar songs that I haven’t heard since I was a kid. What was your favorite song?..

Mary Poppins stage musical full album, from youtube.com

I can’t really pin point to one, but one of them is “Step in Time“. I remember singing and exercising to this song growing-up. My Aunt bought a record (LP) album of a bunch of Disney songs to exercise to. This was one of the songs featured, so this brought fond memories when they performed this song.

They also have a great menu, which I ordered..

Baked Tilapia
BAKED TILAPIADelicate tilapia... https://www.chanhassendt.com/ArticleMedia/Files/PDFs/Menus/Matinee_Spring2015.pdf

During intermission, some of us had dessert, which I would share (Trio cheesecake) with a friend (John D.). Another friend (Jimmy) of ours had carrot cake..

I would love to hear/read about other’s feedback of this performance or any other comments related the content (e.g. Dinsey movie, musical soundtrack, story line, life lesson, etc..)?…

Some feedback I’ve heard:

“Favorite scene was when Mr. Banks donated a schilling (given by his son Michael as a gift) to the poor lady asking for “toppings” to feed the birds”. It was his “last” (financially) he had thinking he might lose his job.” (paraphrase from friend-Charlie).

Personal Life Messages from the movie Unbroken

I watched the anticipating movie “Unbroken” the other day (CHRISTmas) with my parents (my grandfather was captured as a POW as a “Filipino” civilian and survived as a cook) and still absorbing the personal messages from this inspirational movie in this season in my life. I was first introduced to this real-life story (Laura Hillenbrand’s “Unbroken”) by Neil, pastor of Harvest Community Church (Fargo, ND) and host to a weekly morning Bible study-fellowship group I attend in Morris, who gave me to read and share with one of my friends (college student from Japan renter) years ago. Unfortunately, my renter wasn’t interested in reading this book, but was inspired by the story. I got more interested in this story when Neil shared about this book was going to be movie on facebook. I’ve been looking forward to this movie since this Spring and now anxious to share about it with others.

Zamperini’s life story has taught me many life virtues (e.g. perseverance, gratefulness, commitment, and forgiveness) in this point of my life, which I’ll try to share as many of them down below. One of them is perseverance, which the stories he shared of what he endured during WWII is very inspirational. I’ve read many stories from that war, which has helped me to not complain and be more grateful no matter what challenges I’m facing in my life. The sacrifices many soldiers faced (including my own parents’ country-Philippines-> Filipino Military
Bataan Uncensored Paperback – December, 1991
, a must read book!) during that war helped my generation to reap the blessings we have right now. It’s important to never forgot our own history (U.S., Philippines, and any other nation), so we won’t take for granted what we are blessed with.

One of the memorable scenes or lines (motivational-inspirational quotes) that stuck out the most was when Louis made that covenant-commitment to God…

“If you get me through this I swear I’ll dedicate my whole life to you. Please”-Louis Zamperini (from briandoddonleadership.com)

I made a similar promise to God (Heavenly Father) before giving my life to Him back in the winter of 1996. I went skiing at a ski resort (Andes Tower Hills in Kensington, Minnesota). I went down hill skiing with a bunch of college friends (international students) and wanted to show off, so I just jumped on this chair life not knowing how far and big the hill I would be down hill skiing at. Well, when I got to the top, I realize this was higher than I thought and already forgot how to ski. I haven’t gone down hill skiing for years (should’ve gone on the smaller hill or bunny hill to get some practice). Well, this would be called, “Pride before the fall”. There was no way down but to go with my skis, so I had to fall 4x or so to finally decided to walk (after feeling my knee really swollen or hurt). I went to the ER at the local hospital (Morris, MN) and was at the X-Ray room. The doctor took an X-Ray and left the room by myself. This was when I had my “first” BIG encounter with God. I was more concerned about the financial cost of the medical expense than what happened to me physically. I then just called out to God and told Him-“God, if your real. Heal me and I”ll follow You”. Well, the doctor came back and told me that I didn’t break anything, which would be the beginning of my journey of faith (see testimony) Ever made a promise (e.g. Matthew 5:37-“Let your yes, be “YES”) with God, family, friends, etc…? I challenge and encourage you to “follow-through”!

I read and heard many stories of the atrocities in World War II and many wars before and after. Even though this movie just showed one perspective of one American’s experience. The torture that he and many others out there is very “inhumane”. Unfortunately, we as a county didn’t learn from this and still use this to this day (e.g. Shocking cases in CIA report reveal an American torture program in disarray – Spencer Ackerman in New York Tuesday 9 December 2014 ) This is an embarrassment as a nation to this world as we “preached” against inhumanitarian acts of other nations (e.g. North Korea, China, Russia, Iran, etc..).

In my response to what our nation has done and even myself (I too have “wrong” people in different ways and levels due to sin)…”forgive them for they do not know what they do”. Zamperini’s story can be applied with what’s going on today (e.g. Ferguson-we need to forgive each other for the wrong that’s been done to one another). There are “good” and “bad” cops-same with any group of people. We can’t “judge” or “stereotype” (e.g. NOT all Somolians are “evil” as the movie “Black Hawk Down” might stereotype these people group) any group because of the actions of a “few” of a group of people (e.g. race, nationality, political party, religion, institution, etc..) The real “enemy” is satan and his cronies (demons) that try to deceive and divide the human race to “fight” one another. It’s God’s love that is shared in the Gospel (Good News) of Jesus Christ behind the message of Zamerini’s forgiveness!

Is there someone out there that has hurt (e.g. abuse) you in the past? Just as Zamperini had one-the “Bird”-was a “bully” or “tormentor” while he was Prisoner of War. When Zamperini went home after the war, he was like many veterans that would suffer from PTSD. He would have nightmares, which I too had them at times growing-up for different reasons. Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Well, Zamperini started to sleep better after his “encounter” with God at a Billy Graham Crusade and forgave his “enemy” (abuser, bully, etc..). Have you forgave that individual(s) that hurt you in the past? It’s not easy, right? You can’t do it on your own because you need that strength from God alone, which I personally (e.g. my own bully story) got when I gave my life to Him.

When does a boy become a “real” man?

I just watched this “telecast” (“Stepping-Up National Men’s Simulcast/a>) via online with a groupit of 30+ guys at a local church in town (Morris Minnesota), which several churches got together yesterday early on a summer Saturday morning (8a-12p). I thought it was worth my time as we got equipped to become “better” men to fulfill God’s purpose or calling in each of our lives. What is “our” purpose?..

1 Corinthians 16 –

The Collection for the Lord’s People (Session 1: A Man’s Charge-“Act Like Men” by James MacDonald

13 Be on your guard; stand firm in the faith; be courageous; be strong. 14 Do everything in love.

Don’t act like this..

Welcome Back, Duke

From the ashes of Sept. 11 arise the manly virtues. OPINION
October 12, 2001 By PEGGY NOONAN online.wsj.com
“…I believe this quite literally. But then I am experiencing Sept. 11 not as a political event but as a spiritual event.

And, of course, a cultural one, which gets me to my topic.

It is not only that God is back, but that men are back. A certain style of manliness is once again being honored and celebrated in our country since Sept. 11. You might say it suddenly emerged from the rubble of the past quarter century, and emerged when a certain kind of man came forth to get our great country out of the fix it was in.

I am speaking of masculine men, men who push things and pull things and haul things and build things, men who charge up the stairs in a hundred pounds of gear and tell everyone else where to go to be safe. Men who are welders, who do construction, men who are cops and firemen. They are all of them, one way or another, the men who put the fire out, the men who are digging the rubble out, and the men who will build whatever takes its place.
