Hong Xiuquan: The rebel who thought he was Jesus’s brother 18 October 2012 By Carrie Gracie BBC News, Shanghai bbc.com
“..Originally, all Hong Xiuquan wanted was to be part of the establishment. A village schoolteacher, he immersed himself in Confucian scholarship for the civil service exam, but he just kept failing.

“He fell into what I suppose was some kind of depressive fit and he had a vision,” says Jonathan Fenby, who has written a history of modern China.

“He imagined he’d gone up to the skies and there he had met a very tall man with a long beard and thick belt who had told him to come back to Earth and eradicate the demons on Earth.”

Some time later he was given a Chinese translation of the New Testament by a Christian missionary.

“He decided on reading that, that the man he had seen up in the sky was the Christian God, that he, Hong, was the brother of Jesus, and that the devils he had to exterminate on Earth were the Qing dynasty, which was then ruling China and of course was not Chinese.”..”

“..The Europeans brought Christianity which, for Hong, was a convenient alternative to the Confucian creed which had rejected him.

“Seeing that everyone in high heavens scolded him, Confucius escaped down to earth with the leader of the demons,” goes an account of Hong’s vision, set down in writing by a follower.

“The heavenly father then sent the angels to chase after Confucius, tie him up and bring him back to the heavenly father who was exceedingly angry and instructed the angels to whip him. There was plenty of whipping and Confucius asked for mercy repeatedly.”

Famine and unemployment made peasants vulnerable to utopian thinkers
For the most part, China’s emperors had not bothered much with religions. Buddhism had become very popular at a time of upheaval in the 6th Century, but it appealed mostly to people at the bottom of society.

Christianity was one of the novelties which had come in with the colonial powers. They used gunboats to open China to trade, and shattered the image of order and invincibility cultivated by the Qing emperors. Vernacular translations of the Bible helped loosen the grip of the Confucian elites.

The Europeans saw Hong’s claim to be the brother of Christ as heresy, but he was not preaching for their benefit. He accompanied his spiritual message with a political one – a vision of equality and shared land ownership. This appealed to poor farmers, who were suffering from a sense of hopelessness, according to Guo Baogang of Dalton State college.

“Peasants have a very miserable life in the middle of the 19th Century,” he says.

“There’s a lot of famines and unemployment, most peasants have no land. So they’re very vulnerable to the utopian thinkers prescribing a perfect society as a way to escape from the existing society.”..”

Correction at 7:48: The protester says “They are not doing this for themselves, but for the future of Hong Kong.”

Hundreds of thousands of Hongkongers have taken to the streets to protest a controversial extradition bill that could send Hong Kong residents to mainland China to be tried in court. Hong Kong’s Chief Executive, Carrie Lam, says the bill is meant to prevent Hong Kong from becoming a safe haven for fugitives. But its opponents fear that Hong Kong would be exposed to China’s flawed judicial system, which would lead to further erasure of the city’s judicial independence.

At first Lam was determined to move forward with the bill. But after a series of massive protests, she announced she would “indefinitely suspend” the bill. But protesters aren’t accepting the suspension, and have started demanding its complete withdrawal. They’ve also begun calling for Lam’s resignation.

But this rise in tensions is about a lot more than a bill. To understand why this bill hits a nerve with Hongkongers, it’s important to understand Hong Kong’s relationship with China – and exactly how the bill would tip the scales in China’s favor…”

Christians are playing an important role in Hong Kong’s ongoing protests, which aim to preserve the city’s freedoms and autonomy.

While the Chinese government has been accused of cracking down on religious freedom in the mainland, religious groups in the former British colony of Hong Kong are flourishing.

During the campaign against a now-dead extradition bill, Christians were among those taking to the streets.

Churches have become temporary support centers. The hymn ‘Sing Hallelujah to the Lord’ has become the unofficial protest anthem for Christians and non-Christians.

As clashes erupted between protesters and police over the weekend, some Christians tried to reduce tensions between the two sides by standing between them.

What you didn’t know about Peru

“n this brief video you can find seven little known facts about Peru.

More information about the video content bellow:
1. Spaniards may have brought potato starts from Peru to Europe as early as 1562. Ancient Peruvians domesticated the potato as far back as 8,000 years ago. Today, it is the world’s fourth-largest food crop. There are over 3,000 different varieties grown in Peru.

2. Peru is home to the highest sand dune in the world. Cerro Blanco is located in the Sechura Desert near the Nazca Lines and measures 1,176 m from base to summit.

3. Peru’s Nazca lines were first noticed from the air in 1927. Strung along the high desert plateau between Nazca and Palpa, this collection of geoglyphs—comprising more than 70 human figures and animals and 10,000 lines—remain one of the world’s greatest archaeological mysteries. Some say the lines represent a giant astronomical calendar, ceremonial center, or even alien landing strip.

4. The ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu was discovered in 1911 by explorer, professor, and archaeologist Hiram Bingham who was acting as leader of the Yale Peruvian Scientific Expedition. An estimated 1.5 million tourists visit Machu Picchu each year.

5. The warm-water equatorial current, El Niño, is named after El Niño Jesus (Baby Jesus) because it arrives on the coast of Ecuador and Peru every year around Christmas. One of the worst years for El Niño was in 1983 when torrential rains began in Peru’s north on January 4th and didn’t stop until the middle of July.

6. It is estimated that the time it takes to spin, dye, and weave a traditional Peruvian poncho is around 500 to 600 hours over a period of as much as six months. Peruvians are generally given one poncho upon entering adulthood, and it is expected to last a lifetime.

7. The coca plant (Erythroxylum coca) has been used for thousands of years in the Andean world, mainly for its medicinal properties and religious significance. Coca leaves have been used as a stimulant to overcome fatigue, hunger, and thirst and they are particularly effective against altitude sickness. The effects of the coca leaf were discovered in Europe during the 19th century, when a promising German grad student, Albert Niemann, was able to isolate the active ingredient of coca, which he named cocaine…”

Is this a memorial to a gloriously won battle? Or a reminder of a bloody rebellion under the Sechin? Human sacrifice for the gods? Ongoing flooding across the Midwest has left thousands of homes damaged and vast swaths of farmland underwater. Meanwhile, weather experts are predicting a “potentially unprecedented” flood season. Judy Woodruff speaks to Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts for more.

Alert Experts Warn Of Historic Widespread Flooding! Food Prices Skyrocket As 1000s Farms Destroyed

Epic Economist
Published on Mar 23, 2019
We have never seen catastrophic flooding like this, and the NOAA is now telling us that there will be more major flooding for at least two more months. On Thursday, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration warned that “historic, widespread flooding” would “continue through May”. More than 90 percent of the upper Midwest and Great Plains is currently covered by an average of 10.7 inches of snow, and all of that snow is starting to melt. That means that we are going to transition from one of the worst winters in modern history to a flood season that has already taken an apocalyptic turn for farmers all across America. At this moment, millions of acres of farmland are already underwater. Thousands of farmers are not going to be able to plant crops this year, and thousands of other farmers that have been financially ruined by the floods will never return to farming again. This is already the worst agricultural disaster in modern American history, and it is going to get a whole lot worse.

What is happening along the river banks of Nebraska is absolutely devastating and heartbreaking. These towns are being destroyed and severely affecting the people who call these places home. People, Cattle, and livestock being trapped without any way to get to them, homes being submerged by a rush of 10 foot water and 2 foot thick chunks of ice bigger than a truck. These are the same river banks I have had some of my most memorable hunting experiences on. Those properties are 100% under water right now.. I am partnering with the American RedCross of Nebraska and have set up a means and outlet through Whitetail Fit and GoFundMe for people to donate and help out however they can to get food, water and clothing to the 15+ shelters set up along the eastern border of Nebraska. This money will also be used to help rebuild these peoples lives. This is our community, our town and our State. I may not be able to do much on my own, but together and through the Whitetail Fit family, I’ve seen some pretty amazing things happen. I believe in the Hunting community, and the passion everyone has in their hearts to help when there are those who are helpless. I’ll be posting more from here out and keeping everyone up to date on the efforts. Thanks guys! Joel Burham, Owner Whitetail Fit

As Million Calves Lost In Nebraska Beef Prices To Escalate Dramatically In The
Coming Months

Epic Economist
Published on Mar 29, 2019

According to Agriculture Secretary Sunny Purdue, there “may be as many as a million calves lost in Nebraska” due to the catastrophic flooding that has hit the state. This is not a rumor, this is not an exaggeration, and this is not based on any sort of speculation. This number comes to us directly from the top agriculture official in the entire country, and it means that the economic toll from the recent floods is far greater than most of us had anticipated. You can watch Purdue make this quote on Fox Business right here, and it is important to remember that this number is just for one state. It is hard to imagine what the final numbers will look like when the livestock losses for all of the states affected by the flooding are tallied up. This is already the worst agricultural disaster in modern American history, and the National Weather Service is telling us that there will be more catastrophic flooding throughout the middle portion of the nation for the next two months.

Just north of Ashland, in Mead, a flooded water treatment plant at a Superfund site that stores radioactive waste and explosives was shut down for a few days. It is now back up and running.
The Environmental Protection Agency reported Wednesday that there were no releases of hazardous contaminants at any of eight toxic waste sites in flooded parts of Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa.
The EPA identified the Nebraska Ordnance Plant in Mead, and the Conservation Chemical Corporation site in Kansas City, Missouri, as heavily flooded Superfund sites that required the agency to take immediate action to prevent the spread of contaminated groundwater.
Two Iowa sites had some minor flooding but did not require the agency to immediately do anything. It plans to reassess once the floodwaters recede.

As river levels begin to top off and slowly recede in Nebraska, Iowa, Missouri and Kansas, states like Illinois and North Dakota are readying for similar disasters.

Chamorro DNA Studies and the Origin of the Chamorro People guampedia.com
“…Analysis of the specific E1 and E2 haplogroups of the Chamorros showed they were not present outside the Mariana Islands. This pattern indicates that a founder effect occurred. A founder effect is when an original founding population arrives, becomes isolated, and over time, results in a new population that has only a small amount of the genetic variation seen in the original population. In the Marianas, the founding E1 and E2 haplogroup lineages arrived from Island Southeast Asia around 4,000 years ago and after 3,500 years in isolation, the two lineages acquired the mutations that gave rise to the unique genetic lineage seen in the Marianas. The scientists also believe the initial arrival of the Marianas population may have occurred even earlier, maybe 5,000 years ago.

..

While eager to work with Chamorros who are interested in their genetic origins and connections, Vilar understands the necessity of being respectful and sensitive to the needs of the community. As research is not done in a vacuum, researchers should always work under a strict code of ethics that includes treating people who provide samples with respect and dignity. Vilar works only with live individuals and not ancient skeletal remains. In addition, he plans to share his research with his informants before he publishes his findings, perhaps in another two years.’

Science Technology

All the futuristic technologies in ‘Black Panther,’ and how close they are to becoming reality Kaylee Fagan Feb. 26, 2018, 6:14 PM

businessinsider.com
“…The Afro-futurist blockbuster takes place in Wakanda, a fictional African nation that is generations ahead of the rest of the world technologically, but chooses to hide its innovations in order to protect its people.

..

There are several references to futuristic vehicles in the film, but none got more screen time than the high-speed magnetic levitation subway that runs through Wakanda’s famous vibranium mine.

..

Shuri’s maglev may be years ahead of any current transit rail systems, but as with most conceivably achievable sci-fi tropes, Elon Musk is working on it.

Just last week, SpaceX got a permit to begin excavations in Washington, DC for building the Hyperloop, a high-speed, vacuum-powered railway that Musk says will someday be able to carry passengers from New York to the capitol in under 30 minutes.

The technology is still in its infan..

So the lore goes, a large meteorite full of vibranium crash-landed in Wakanda, and the material is highly coveted throughout the rest of the world.

The fictional element is used to make weapons, including Captain America’s shield, as well as vehicles and other tech throughout Wakanda. It’s also stitched into Black Panther’s suit, making it bulletproof and giving T’Challa the ability to absorb the energy from blows he sustains and release that energy when it’s useful, but we’ll talk about that later in the list.,,,

…Although vibranium has a few properties that are nearly impossible to emulate in real life, most experts agree that graphene is a comparable real-life counterpart. (Yes, there are superhero physics experts.)

Graphene may not look like much, but it holds the title of the strongest material ever tested. In an op-ed for Wired, Physicist and University of Minnesota professor James Kakalios described graphene as “10 times more bulletproof than steel” and practically invisible, due to its unique atomic structure.
