Deep Thought: What can be done to “stop” lives being taken away due to Drug -Alcohol Overdose?

Drug Overdose Deaths: Let’s Get Specific ncbi.nlm.nih.gov
“..In the United States, a total of 38,329 drug overdose deaths were reported via death certificates in 2010, for an age-adjusted rate of 12.3/100,000 population.1 In 16,651 of these deaths, an opioid analgesic (or a combination of opioid analgesics) was listed as contributing to the overdose death (5.4/100,000 population). However, an additional 9,429 drug overdose deaths (3.0/100,000 population) were associated only with “other and unspecified drugs.” Previous work has shown that about 25% of U.S. overdose deaths had no drugs specified on the death certificate, so it is likely that national statistics underestimate by a substantial fraction the number of opioid analgesic- and heroin-related deaths.2 Furthermore, the degree of underestimation varied depending on the type of death certification system the state had in place. States with centralized state medical examiner systems had on average a higher percentage (92%) of drug overdose death certificates listing specific drugs than states with other types of systems, such as a decentralized coroner system, in which 62% of death certificates had a drug-specified, hybrid system—county coroner and medical examiners (73%)—or decentralized county or district medical examiner system (71%).2..”

“When you’re having a bad day, the best thing you can do is call somebody and ask them how they’re doing, and actually pay attention and listen to the answer to get out of your own head.”

“A woman came up to me after the meeting and said, ‘You’ve just taken away my last excuse to have a drink.’ I asked her what she meant. She said, ‘I’ve always had this little corner of my mind which held the excuse that, if anything were to happen to my kids, then I’d be justified in getting drunk. You’ve shown me that’s not true.’ I was suddenly aware that maybe I had found a way to turn this dreadful tragedy into something positive. I really was in the position to say, ‘Well, if I can go through this and stay sober, then anyone can.’ There was no better way to honor the memory of my son.”…

“I was living in constant fear of who I’d meet, what I might have said to them, what I might have done with them, so I’d stay in my apartment for days and drink alone. I was a recluse at 20. It was pathetic — it wasn’t me. I’m a fun, polite person and it turned me into a rude bore. For a long time people were saying to me, ‘We think you have a problem,’ but in the end I had to come to the realization myself.”..

Deep Thought: Life Purpose- Just “graduated”..what now?

What are you going to “do” now? What are your plans after graduation? What’s next? These are just some of the many questions graduates (and even non-graduates too) ponder as they are frequently bombarded with by family members, friends, etc.. I “graduated” from college almost 19+ years ago and sometimes “ponder” some of these questions too. However, as one gets “older”, we tend to find more of that “purposeful life” as we grow (hopefully most of us) in “wisdom”. I decided to do this blog topic to “encourage” those in similar boats..

If you just recently graduated…congratulations!

You deserve the recognition and accolades! It’s a big accomplishment! I current and have been working with “high school dropouts” in getting their G.E.D. or high school diploma. One of my oldest student was in her 50’s! It’s not that easy for many due to the various different “life challenges” and circumstances each person faces. In fact, this leads to one possible idea on what to do “next”! Pay it forward, help (e.g. volunteer) someone in your local community (e.g. community ed) get their G.E.D. You know something that many people don’t and you can share that knowledge with others. This brings up to this video I recently found as a great start in that “journey” in finding that “purpose in life”..

Did you find answers to all the questions above? Good! You are already on your way to a finding answers that many people my age or older don’t know already. I encourage you to share these answers with as many family members and close love ones. They might build on these answer and help direct you to the many questions you pondered earlier mentioned above or beginning of this blog.

Now You Know: What is “discipleship”?

The True Meaning of “DISCIPLESHIP” – YouTube

What does it mean to “make disciples”? jesusfilm.org
“..What’s a disciple?

The Greek word that’s translated “make disciples” is mathēteuō, which comes from the root mathētēs, meaning “learner” or “pupil.” In ancient Greece, this word typically denoted someone who was an apprentice to a trade like masonry or shipbuilding. In philosophy, it spoke of someone who had developed a master/student relationship with a teacher.

For Christians, discipleship communicates the same sort of idea. The disciple is a believer who’s learning to obediently follow and serve Jesus as their master. Discipleship emphasizes more than simply accepting Jesus. It’s an enduring, long-term commitment to uncovering and discovering what it means to be devoted to Jesus. We do this through constant exposure to Scripture, commitment to communities of faith, and the direct involvement of mature believers in our lives…”

Various Ways?

6 Simple Ways to Make Disciples Without Adding Anything To Your Schedule – Caesar Kalinowski
https://youtu.be/qb7_YbdaDEQ
“..In the video clip above he says, “Let me give you six rhythms we’ve been using in community… First one is Know the Story. Okay, we all have a story. Is our story apart of God’s story or are we believing a different story that’s been told to us by maybe our parents, our boss, people growing up, the culture? Do we know God’s story as a story? We need to. If we’re going to be living as disciples who make disciples, we need to know God’s story. We need to get to know each other’s story deeply enough to apply the gospel… That leads us to another rhythm of Listening. We’re always listening to someone, but are we listening to God…We need to listen backwards through the Word of God—Who is God? How has He always been? We need to listen forward through the Holy Spirit. Like my prayer times are mostly filled up with me telling God what to do, then I shoot off into my day. But to cultivate a rhythm of listening to God and in community is how you get to know peoples stories… Next rhythm: Celebrate. Life is living in a rhythm of celebration. Think about all the holidays that are just coming around, and birthdays (everybody you know has one), and anniversaries, and graduations, and all. We need to join those celebrations and be the bringers of the better wine…Throw the best parties. The church should be the most celebratory people of the planet. We get to live forever! Party! Rhythm of Eating. Talk about moving from additional to intentional. We’re already eating like 21 times a week…What if I were to have three meals a week with people I’m trying to make disciples of? Then this rhythm of Bless…Ask the spirit to reveal to you three people that you could bless intentionally each week through either words, action, or gift. Imagine a community of people in a neighborhood, like ten or twelve, all blessing three people a week. You think that neighborhood would notice? It’ll transform a place. This last rhythm is ReCreate. It’s this idea of rest in Christ’s completed work and then out of that we create beauty and we work and we create value. Resting in what Christ has done for us, not to earn, but then we work. It’s the idea of sabbath.” ..”

Who Were The Twelve Disciples? – YouTube

In the Footsteps of the Apostles BY ANDREW TODHUNTER
nationalgeographic.com/
They were unlikely leaders. As the Bible tells it, most knew more about mending nets than winning converts when Jesus said he would make them “fishers of men.” Yet 2,000 years later, all over the world, the Apostles are still drawing people in.

“IN THE TOWN of Parur, India, in the southern state of Kerala, the polished stone floor of the old church of Kottakkavu gleams so brightly that it mirrors the crimson, pine green, and gold-upon-gold altarpiece like a reflecting pool.

..

“..Around the altarpiece, painted clouds hover in a blue sky. Small statues stand in niches backlit with brilliant aqua. On a rug near the church wall a woman in a blue sari with a purple veil covering her hair kneels motionless, elbows at her sides, hands upraised. In a larger, newer church adjacent, a shard of pale bone no bigger than a thumbnail lies in a golden reliquary. A label in English identifies the relic as belonging to St. Thomas. On this site, tradition says, Thomas founded the first Christian church in India, in A.D. 52.

..’

Peter was the movement’s first champion; in the Acts of the Apostles we hear of his mass conversions and miraclemaking—healing the lame, raising the dead—and in an un-Christian flourish, calling down a supernatural death upon one couple who held back a portion of their donation to the community…

The faith’s first martyr, according to the Bible, was St. Stephen, a young Christian leader who enraged a Jewish community by suggesting that Christ would return and destroy the Temple of Jerusalem…

In the year 44 King Herod Agrippa I imprisoned and beheaded James the Greater, the first of the Apostles to die…

Tradition holds that 11 of the Twelve Apostles were martyred. Peter, Andrew, and Philip were crucified; James the Greater and Thaddaeus fell to the sword; James the Lesser was beaten to death while praying for his attackers; Bartholomew was flayed alive and then crucified; Thomas and Matthew were speared; Matthias was stoned to death; and Simon was either crucified or sawed in half. John—the last survivor of the Twelve—likely died peaceably, possibly in Ephesus, around the year 100.

“..Mark the Evangelist too spread the word, bringing Christ’s message to Egypt and founding the Coptic faith. But for some Catholics, Mark represents most emphatically the saint as political symbol, powerfully linked with the identity of Venice. Although a figure from the ancient past, he retains a stronger grip on the consciousness of modern-day Venetians than Washington or Lincoln holds on most Americans.

Coptic Christians base their theology on the teachings of the Apostle Mark, who introduced Christianity to Egypt, according to the St. Takla Church in Alexandria, the capital of Coptic Christianity.

WHERE DID THE DISCIPLES GO? 12tribehistory.com
This information is based on the research of Dr. Herman Hoeh from an Article called “Where did the apostles go?” It was co-authored by John Keyser.

“..
First, Paul was to teach the Gentiles – he did that in Cyprus, Asia Minor and Greece. Second, he was to appear before kings – an event which landed him in prison in Rome for two-years. At the end of that two-year period, during which no accusers had appeared, Paul would automatically have been released according to Roman law. At that point, Luke stops the story of Paul. See Acts 28:31. Thirdly, he ended his work by going to the Lost Ten Tribes.

Bartholomew

Bartholomew worked with Thomas in the Parthian Empire. According to Nicephorus recorded that Bartholomew also spent part of his time in Armenia and Upper Phrygia in Asia Minor. Nicephorus called the area the “Western and Northern parts of Asia,” .(Asia Minor, modern Turkey today)…

Jude

Jude, his other name was Libbaeus Thaddaeus, had his ministry in Assyria and Mesopotamia. That is part of Parthia Empire also. All lands north of the Eurphates River belonged to the lost tribes of Israel according to Josephus. During the New Testament times, Parthia ruled most ruled over most of the Gentiles. Part of their possession was Assyria and Mesopotamia. They controlled the famous city of Babylon…

Philip

Philip was assigned to Scythia. Scythia was the land area located aroung the Black and the Caspian Seas. In 331 A.D. the Parthian Empire fell to Persia. The Parthians migrated to this region.

Matthew

Matthew [Levi], Metaphrastes tells us,

“went first into Parthia, and having successfully planted Christianity in those parts, thence traveled to Aethiopia, that is, the Asiatic Aethiopia, lying near India.”

Metaphrastes was the principal compiler of the legends of saints in the “Menologia” of the Byzantine Church. Also Dorotheus declares Matthew was buried at Hierapolis in Parthia.

Matthias

Ethiopia and Greek sources tell us Matthias went to Dacia. Dacia is modern day Romania and Macedonia…

. sources designate Dacia. Dacia was the extreme western part of Scythia. From Dacia came the Normans who ultimately settled in France and Britain.

John

John may have been sent to Gaul which is modern day France. This is only based on a French legend that Mary mother of Jesus went to Gaul. We know that the Messiah told John to take care of his mother. There is a legend that Mary went with John to France and later to Britain. Paul may have passed by Gaul on his way from Italy to Spain (Romans 15:24, 28). This is no historical proof that John went to Gaul.

Folks with Signs Along the Highway Exit Ramps or Other Places Part 4

On Saturday, September 15th 2017-I was just exiting of Highway 280 going to University Avenue (towards Minneapolis to visit a friend) from I-94 (St. Paul side). I saw one of those “homeless guys with signs” again, which I was prepared. Earlier, I got bag of bottle water read with invitation “tickets” for a free meal at Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities‘ homeless shelters, which anyone can print online…

Give a Ticket of Hope

I ran quickly to my trunk as there was a red light and handed to this guy saying “God bless you” as the green light came on. I didn’t have time to chat, but I quickly prayed for him again as I might’ve drove by him again (can’t tell with the pic) across the bridge (pic above) when I was going back to St. Paul.

Inspirational: Desmond Doss of “Hacksaw Ridge” Movie

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) Official Trailer – “Believe” – Andrew Garfield

Hacksaw Ridge (2016)imdb.com
“..WWII American Army Medic Desmond T. Doss, who served during the Battle of Okinawa, refuses to kill people, and becomes the first man in American history to receive the Medal of Honor without firing a shot. ..”

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) historyvshollywood.com
“…When did Desmond Doss join the U.S. Army?

In researching the Hacksaw Ridge true story, we learned that Desmond Doss was drafted into the United States army in April 1942. He could have gotten a deferment because he worked as a ship joiner at a shipyard in Newport News, Virginia, but he wanted to serve his country. Electing not to bear arms, he made his way into the army medical corps. During March 1944, he shipped out along with the rest of the 77th Division (the Statue of Liberty Division) for the Pacific Theater, first to Guam, then to Leyte in the Philippines, and finally to partake in the allied invasion of Okinawa, an island 340 miles south of mainland Japan (only the latter is chronicled in the movie). “I felt like it was an honor to serve God and country,” Desmond said. “We were fightin’ for our religious liberty and freedom.” -The Conscientious Objector Documentary
..

Why did Desmond T. Doss refuse to bear arms during WWII?

Fact-checking Hacksaw Ridge confirmed that he refused to carry a weapon because of his personal and religious beliefs as a Seventh-day Adventist, which is part of the Protestant sect of Christianity. “My dad bought this Ten Commandments and Lord’s Prayer illustrated on a nice frame, and I had looked at that picture of the Sixth Commandment, ‘Thou shalt not kill.’…

There’s a picture that had Cain and he killed his brother Abel, and I wonder how in the world could a brother do such a thing? I’ve pictured Christ for savin’ life, I wanna be like Christ go savin’ life instead of takin’ life and that’s the reason I take up medicine.”
..
Hacksaw Ridge Movie CLIP – Cowardice (2016) – Andrew Garfield Movie

Matthew 5:38-40 Eye for Eye biblegateway.com

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[a] 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. ..

Did fellow soldiers really accuse Desmond of being a coward and pick on him?

Yes. “He knew he was gonna have difficulty,” said his sister Audrey, “because he doesn’t use a gun.” He went to South Carolina to join the 77th Division and begin his basic training at Fort Jackson. The army initially refused his request to be a medic and assigned him to a rifle company, figuring that peer pressure (and intimidation) might convince him to handle a weapon. His fellow soldiers regarded him as a pest and thought he was putting on an act. The Hacksaw Ridge true story confirms that, like in the movie, they ridiculed him and didn’t want to associate with him. “They made fun of me,” says Desmond, who always carried a Bible in his pocket and prayed before bed. They called him “Holy Jesus” and “Holy Joe.”..

Jesus: For War or Peace? tektonics.org
“..Some would say that this seems to be a strong indictment against war, and place it against certain verses where Jesus seems to advocate fighting.

We’ll look at those in a moment, but it should first be noted that this verse is in the form of proverbial wisdom, and is therefore not an advocation of pacifism — nor, by reason of its proverbial nature, is it absolute, as is obvious since not every single person who has drawn a sword (or other weapon) has died by the same means…”
What Does the Bible Say About War? christianbiblereference.org
“…Just War Theory
Clearly, the Christian ideal is total elimination of war and brotherly love among all people. However, in this imperfect world, war may be forced on those who do not desire it. Christian theologians St. Augustine of Hippo (354 – 430) and St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) are primarily responsible for formulating the theory of the Just War which has remained the majority Christian approach to war to this day. There are many variations on the just war theory, but these are the basics:

There must be a just cause for the war.
War must be waged only in response to certain, grave and lasting damage inflicted by an aggressor.
The motive for war must be advancement of good or avoidance of evil.
The ultimate objective of war must be to bring peace.
Revenge, revolt, a desire to harm, dominate, or exploit and similar things are not justification for war.
..”

Hacksaw Ridge (2016 – Movie) Official Clip – “Rescue”

How close did Desmond Doss come to being killed or wounded while rescuing 75 of his fellow soldiers?

The real Desmond Doss considers it a miracle that he made it off the ridge on Okinawa. “When you have explosions and bursts so close you can practically feel it, and not get wounded up there when I should have been killed a number of times. I know who I owe my life to as well as my men. That’s why I like to tell this story to the glory of God, because I know from the human standpoint, I should not be here.” The true story reveals that he spent 12 hours up on the ridge rescuing the men, averaging one man every 10 minutes. -Medal of Honor: Oral Histories

Hacksaw Ridge – “Help Me Get One More” Scene

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) Waiting For Desmond Doss Scene 1080p Clip

Did they put the final assault to take the ridge on hold while Desmond read his Bible?

Yes. The final assault to take the Maeda Escarpment happened on the morning of May 5, 1945, a Saturday, the day of Sabbath, which the Fourth Commandment says should be devoted to prayer. Given that Desmond was the only medic left in B Company, he agreed to go but requested that he first be given time to read his Bible. The delay was approved up the chain of command and the assault was put on hold until Desmond finished his devotions. That day, the 307th Infantry Regiment of the 77th Infantry Division overtook Hacksaw Ridge for good. -The Conscientious Objector Documentary..”

The True Story of Hacksaw Ridge and Desmond Doss: the Medal of Honor Winner Who Never Fired a Shot
By Mike Miller Updated February 24, 2017 at 6:29pm EDT people.com
“..The fighting took place on the hellish Maeda Escarpment in April 1945. The battlefield, located on top of a sheer 400-foot cliff, was fortified with a deadly network of Japanese machine gun nests and booby traps. The escarpment, nicknamed Hacksaw Ridge for the treacherously steep cliff, was key to winning the battle of Okinawa. The mission was thought to be near-impossible, and when Doss’s battalion was ordered to retreat, the medic refused to leave his fallen comrades behind.

Facing heavy machine gun and artillery fire, Doss repeatedly ran alone into the kill zone, carrying wounded soldiers to the edge of the cliff and singlehandedly lowering them down to safety. Each time he saved a man’s life, Doss prayed out loud, “Lord, please help me get one more.” By the end of the night he had rescued an estimated 75 men. Hacksaw Ridge Desmond Doss Documentary-The Conscientious Objector

“Published on Aug 20, 2016

A documentary by Terry Benedict about a Seventh-day Adventist war hero, Desmond Doss, who was a Conscientious Objector and not only refused to kill but refused to carry a weapon into combat because of his personal beliefs as a Christian.

He served as a medic and you will hear many miraculous examples of the super-human measures Doss was empowered to perform in saving the lives of many of his comrades, while adhering to his religious convictions. It will become very evident that the Power who strengthened Doss was the same Power he so faithfully adhered to.

He received a Medal of Honor given in recognition of the risks he took to save the lives of so many comrades.”

Hacksaw Ridge (2016) historyvshollywood.com
“…Did Desmond T. Doss nearly get blown up by a hand grenade?

Yes. On the night of May 21, 1945, just a half mile past the escarpment on Okinawa, Desmond’s unit inadvertently walked into a company of Japanese soldiers. The unit engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the enemy and Desmond scrambled to treat the wounded. “They begin to throw these hand grenades,” recalled Desmond. “I saw it comin’. There was three other men in the hole with me. They were on the lower side, but I was on the other side lookin’ when they threw the thing. I knew there was no way I could get at it. So I just quickly took my left foot and threw it back to where I thought the grenade might be, and throw my head and helmet to the ground. And not more than half a second later, I felt like I was sailin’ through the air. I was seein’ stars I wasn’t supposed to be seein’, and I knew my legs and body were blown up.” The blast left 17 pieces of shrapnel embedded in Desmond’s body, mostly in his legs. -The Conscientious Objector Documentary..”

Deep Thought: How much to “give”?

Sal: I didn’t start “tithing” or giving an offering to my local church until my college days (it wasn’t 10%, but whenever I swore-that’s another blog..lol!) when I became a “Christian”. I really never was taught on this topic from a Biblical perspective. It took me awhile to start giving 10% and knowing it’s the Lord’s as He owns everything anyways. It’s like giving it “back” to Him showing Him our gratitude of His blessings…

Bible

What does the Bible say about Christian tithing? Should a Christian tithe? .gotquestions.org
“…Tithing is an Old Testament concept. The tithe was a requirement of the Law in which the Israelites were to give 10 percent of the crops they grew and the livestock they raised to the tabernacle/temple (Leviticus 27:30; Numbers 18:26; Deuteronomy 14:24; 2 Chronicles 31:5). In fact, the Old Testament Law required multiple tithes—one for the Levites, one for the use of the temple and the feasts, and one for the poor of the land—which would have pushed the total to around 23.3 percent. Some understand the Old Testament tithe as a method of taxation to provide for the needs of the priests and Levites in the sacrificial system.

After the death of Jesus Christ fulfilled the Law, the New Testament nowhere commands, or even recommends, that Christians submit to a legalistic tithe system. The New Testament nowhere designates a percentage of income a person should set aside, but only says gifts should be “in keeping with income” (1 Corinthians 16:2). Some in the Christian church have taken the 10 percent figure from the Old Testament tithe and applied it as a “recommended minimum” for Christians in their giving. ..”

What does the Bible say about Christian tithing?

“Published on Jun 25, 2013

The New Testament nowhere designates a percentage of income a person should set aside, but only says it is to be “in keeping with income” (1 Corinthians 16:2). Some in the Christian church have taken the 10 percent figure from the Old Testament tithe and applied it as a “recommended minimum” for Christians in their giving. The New Testament talks about the importance and benefits of giving. We are to give as we are able. Sometimes that means giving more than 10 percent; sometimes that may mean giving less. It all depends on the ability of the Christian and the needs of the church. Every Christian should diligently pray and seek God’s wisdom in the matter of participating in tithing and/or how much to give (James 1:5). Above all, all tithes and offerings should be given with pure motives and an attitude of worship to God and service to the body of Christ. “Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Tithing is an Old Testament concept. The tithe was a requirement of the law in which all Israelites were to give 10 percent of everything they earned and grew to the Tabernacle/Temple (Leviticus 27:30; Numbers 18:26; Deuteronomy 14:24; 2 Chronicles 31:5). In fact, the Old Testament Law required multiple tithes which would have pushed the total to around 23.3 percent, not the 10 percent which is generally considered the tithe amount today. Some understand the Old Testament tithe as a method of taxation to provide for the needs of the priests and Levites in the sacrificial system. The New Testament nowhere commands, or even recommends, that Christians submit to a legalistic tithe system. Paul states that believers should set aside a portion of their income in order to support the church (1 Corinthians 16:1-2).”

Dave’s Advice on Tithing and Giving, from daveramsey.com
“…So why does He ask us to give 10% to Him? Tithing was created for our benefit. It is to teach us how to keep God first in our lives and how to be unselfish people. Unselfish people make better husbands, wives, friends, relatives, employees and employers. God is trying to teach us how to prosper over time.

Many people have observed that after they stopped tithing, their finances seemed to get worse. In the Book of Malachi, God promises that if you do not rob Him of your tithing, He will rebuke your devourers and protect you.

If you cannot live off 90% of your income, then you cannot live off 100%. It does not require a miracle for you to get through the month. I think that if you sit down and look at your budget, you will see that you can make it while giving at least 10%. Read the Bible and take from it what you will, and if you tithe, do it out of love for God, not guilt…”

One of the most common things that we hear people say is that God moves in “mysterious ways.” And this proves true in every aspect of people’s lives, which can only make sense because once we understand that His ways are higher than ours, we will be able to appreciate how God surprises His people with the way He works, be it with a financial blessing or any other aspect of our lives. For example, let us take the testimony of Richard and Lynn and see how being true to God has given them so much more than what they expected.”

John 4 New International Version (NIV)
Jesus Talks With a Samaritan Woman
biblegateway.com
“…4 Now he had to go through Samaria. 5 So he came to a town in Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground Jacob had given to his son Joseph. 6 Jacob’s well was there, and Jesus, tired as he was from the journey, sat down by the well. It was about noon.

7 When a Samaritan woman came to draw water, Jesus said to her, “Will you give me a drink?” 8 (His disciples had gone into the town to buy food.)

9 The Samaritan woman said to him, “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.[a])

10 Jesus answered her, “If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would have asked him and he would have given you living water.”

11 “Sir,” the woman said, “you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his livestock?”

13 Jesus answered, “Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

15 The woman said to him, “Sir, give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water.”

16 He told her, “Go, call your husband and come back.”

17 “I have no husband,” she replied.

Jesus said to her, “You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is, you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What you have just said is quite true.”

19 “Sir,” the woman said, “I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem.”

21 “Woman,” Jesus replied, “believe me, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in the Spirit and in truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in the Spirit and in truth.”

25 The woman said, “I know that Messiah” (called Christ) “is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us.”

26 Then Jesus declared, “I, the one speaking to you—I am he.”..”

Folks with Signs Along the Highway Exit Ramps Part 3

I was coming to downtown Minneapolis on the 5th Avenue exit from I-35W (intersects S. 10th St.) when my friends and I came to this stoplight. We saw this guy holding this sign..

“Please Smile for me if you cannot donate”

(paraphrase)

Wished I took a pic of what he was holding. I was inspired by his unique sign, so I was looking around my car right away for something to give him before it turned green. I found an apple that my friends didn’t want to eat, so I handed it to him and said “God bless” after he said “thank you” sincerely.

“Heavenly Father, we know you know this particular individual. We pray that you bless him and that he’ll come to a personal growing relationship with you..in Jesus’ name..Amen”

Homeless guy with Sign in St. Paul

I was riding my bicycle to Culvers Restaurant by Sun Ray Shopping Center in East St. Paul to pick up lunch for my family. I rather bike as it was only a quarter of a mile or so and I love the exercise.

While riding my bike, I rode by this “homeless” guy with a sign by the gas station on the corner of Ruth Street and Old Hudson Road. The highway exit ramp to I-94 was block close by due to the construction, so this was probably the reason why this guy was holding his sign in this particular area.

I decided to skip lunch and give him my lunch as he probably need it more. I bought a chicken sandwhich with bbq sauce (along with chicken tenders) and put it in a separate bag for this guy. I then put this bible tract..

…to give him some “soul food ” too! As I rode my bike to deliver this food for him, there was a “mom” and son giving him money and chatting with him. I decided to hand it to him and said “God bless”, which he said the same as he continued to chat with these people. I did a quiet prayer for him as I rode my bike away.

“Heavenly Father, we pray for this particular individual wherever he is right now. We pray that this food (physical and spiritual) will nourish his body and soul…in Jesus’ name..Amen!”

Tribute to:

NATIONAL FOOD BANK DAY nationaldaycalendar.com

When you wake up on the first Friday in September make a commitment for National Food Bank Day to contribute to the cause that believes no one should go to bed hungry.

Hunger may be as close as your neighbor or your coworker in the next cubical. Bare cupboards and empty stomachs look just like yours and mine behind closed doors.

Food banks across the country help some of the 42 million men, women and children who struggle with putting food on the table. The reasons range from illness to job loss and a general change in circumstances. Circumstances that can happen to anyone of us.

For parents struggling to make ends meet, the ability to look their children in their eyes over a meal instead of into hungry eyes is a difference made by supporting food banks. Food banks fill the gap for those living on a meager budget.
Many food banks offer educational opportunities that help people change their situation and begin anew. Often, those who have benefited from the programs return to volunteer and contribute to the very food bank that staved off hunger to do the same for others.

HOW TO OBSERVE

Help a neighbor, a friend, coworker or a child by making a donation or volunteering at your local food bank. Food banks take nonperishable food items and cash donations every day. Check their needs list for the fresh items they are seeking.

Use #NationalFoodBankDay to give your local food bank a shout out and to share on social media.

HISTORY
Food Book 50 Logo

St. Mary’s Food Bank founded National Food Bank Day to recognize the outstanding contributions of food banks around the country and to commemorate the establishment of St. Mary’s Food Bank by its founder John ven Hengel in 1967. John ven Hengel came up with the idea of grocery rescue and food banking and the idea spread throughout the country making St. Mary’s Food Bank the very first in the world! In 2017, St. Mary’s celebrates its 50th anniversary!

They distribute 250,000 meals on a daily basis through the efforts of dedicated staff, partnering agencies and volunteers.
Their mission is to alleviate hunger through the gathering and distribution of food while encouraging self-sufficiency, collaboration, advocacy and education.

The Registrar at National Day Calendar proclaimed National Food Bank Day to be observed annually on the first Friday of September beginning in 2017.”

Deep Thought: What do I have to “give up” when becoming-growing (as) a Christian?

A “friend” got “theological” with me this past weekend over the holidays. He asked, why this church doesn’t allow us to “practice” our old ways (e.g. shamanism, see-> Deuteronomy 18). I then thought about my former Catholic up-bringing. I didn’t think about it much when I was growing-up, but friends in college would question some of the “theological” practices (e.g. worship Mary, statues/idols in the sanctuary, priests are called “father, etc…). It’s not just “religious” stuff, but just “old” ways in our “sinful” lifestyle of the past (e.g. drunkeness or any other addictions that controlled/slaved you in bondage, etc…) that prevented one to a “personal relationship” with the Heavenly Father.

All That’s Inside -Jon Thurlow (Lyrics)

“Uploaded on Feb 19, 2011

(Let there be) no reservations, no walls
But just an open door in my heart for You

I want to give all that’s inside of my heart
I want to give all that’s inside of my heart to You

Everything else is fading away
Only love (only love) only love remains (only love remains)

It’s not the riches, it’s not the fame
It’s not the power, it’s not my name
Only love (only love) only love (only love) only love (only love)

So take the same love that’s inside Your heart
And put that same love deep inside of me

Everything else, everything else,
Everything else is fading (only love remains)”

Deep Thought: Legalism in the Church of tithing??

I decided to write on this topic after a “close friend” told me about a church in the city kind of pressures people to “tithe” 10%. I told him that I used to be part of this “cultish” like church group that forced their attendees to tithe 10% also. I didn’t stay long enough for me to do it, but I heard that they would collect your bank account information and would have you automatically transfer that 10% automatically to their “church” denomination. I was still young in my Christian faith and it just didn’t “sound right” based on what I’ve read so far in the Bible. I ended up leaving this particular group even though I enjoyed the Bible study portion of their get-togethers/fellowship as I was “hungry” (seeking the faith).

What I can personally testify from my experiences of tithing is that I do this as an act of “obedience” of my faith based on what I’ve been taught and read via Scriptures. I’ve seen results of tithing 10% of my income every Sunday as I’ve been blessed (e.g. financially). Plus, I do it “cheerfully” knowing it’s going to be used for building God’s Kingdom (e.g. faith that what I’m giving is helping my local church’s mission of “reaching out to the lost” and “making disciples of all nations”). If you are uncertain on whether you should give to your local church. I suggest exploring the mission of your local church and if you believe in it-is it Biblical?

I’m no expert in this topic, so I decided to share some resources that I found credible to help answer some question “we” all may have on this topic:

Teachings

Lesson 4: Why You Should NOT Tithe (Selected Scriptures), bible.org
“…The Bible teaches that God, who richly has supplied us with all good things, wants us “to be generous and ready to share” (1 Tim. 6:18). But what does generosity mean? Isn’t giving 10 percent of my income to the Lord’s work being generous? If not 10 percent, how much should I give?..”

Before I critique this view, let me point out that there are some commendable points regarding tithing: (1) Those who tithe are often acting in obedience to what they believe God has commanded. (2) Tithing gets some to increase what they give. (3) Tithing helps consistency and discipline in giving. But consider these seven reasons why tithing is not God’s standard for Christians:

A. Tithing was a part of the law of Moses; believers are not under the law…

What does the Bible say about Christian tithing? Should a Christian tithe? gotquestions.org
“… Answer: Many Christians struggle with the issue of tithing. In some churches giving is over-emphasized. At the same time, many Christians refuse to submit to the biblical exhortations about making offerings to the Lord. Tithing/giving is intended to be a joy and a blessing. Sadly, that is sometimes not the case in the church today…”

“Has a pastor or some other church leader ever told you that you must tithe because that is what the Bible says you should give? Have you been told that “you’re not giving generously to God” or that “you’re robbing God” (Mal. 3:8-9) because you’re not giving at least 10% of your gross income to your local church? Have you been instructed that “giving 10% is a good starting point” for your giving, meaning that you should give at least 10%? Have you been told that “you should at least tithe because you can’t out-give God”? ..”
