Standing Rock Activists Clear Trash as Tribes Ask Court to Halt Pipeline By Bethania Palma snopes.com
Demonstrators in North Dakota are still on the ground and cleaning up trash left after a blizzard evacuation, and bracing as a new deadline approaches.
“..In early February 2017, news outlets began to report on large quantities of trash left behind at protest camps by demonstrators at Standing Rock — although hundreds of people have remained in the unforgiving North Dakota winter in a nearly year-long standoff over a multi-billion dollar oil pipeline. Organizers told us much of the debris was left behind due to a forced evacuation of the protest camps amid a series of severe December 2016 blizzards, and subsequent sub-zero temperatures froze it to the ground, hindering cleanup.

The Standing Rock Sioux and environmental activists have bitterly opposed the $3.8 billion Energy Transfer Partners pipeline under the Missouri River, fearing a pipeline leak would destroy the tribe’s only source of drinking water and contaminate the supply for millions of people who live downstream from the pipe crossing. The Sioux have also tried to preserve cultural and religious landmarks spread throughout the area, some of which they say have already been destroyed by pipeline construction. Thousands of people have cycled through the encampments since the protest was launched on 1 April 2016, including non-Native activists who oppose fossil fuels as an energy source because it contributes to climate change.

Joye Braun, a front line community organizer with Indigenous Environmental Network and member of the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe, told us that demonstrators have been working in freezing temperatures to clean after two blizzards bore down on North Dakota. Just as thousands had arrived at protest encampments, many were forced to evacuate. The first storm struck on 5 December 2016 and the second came several days later. Since then, freezing temperatures have been an obstacle for cleaning efforts:

We had about 17,000 people here and then there was that big blizzard, then three or four days later, another big blizzard. So we had about 300 or 400 people left cleaning up stuff, some of which has been frozen to the ground… Everybody at camp is working so hard.

Michael A. Wood, Jr., a Marine Corps veteran who founded Veterans Stand for Standing Rock (the organization’s name has since shortened to Veterans Stand), told us 100 to 200 veterans are en route to the site to help with clean-up efforts. Braun said the veterans will be housed on reservation land. Several camps, including the largest, Oceti Sakowin, remain standing with a total of about 800 demonstrators, despite extreme weather. While one media report quoted a police officer saying, “As bad as it sounds, we’re looking for people that may have died and could be wrapped up in a canvas or a tarp or tent,” Wood and Braun both said they know of no fatalities…”

Video Shows Morton County Re-Dumping Trash Inside Standing Rock Camp
Published on February 8, 2017 in Environmental/Freshest News by Claire Bernish thedailyhaze.com
Water protectors stand accused of leaving behind mountains of trash

Mainstream media jumped to believe misinformation over fact.
Morton County was captured on video moving trash, rather than transporting it to the dump.
The operation appears to be staged to make water protectors look careless.

“Much talk has circulated over the last two weeks about appalling quantities of trash left behind by water protectors in the Dakota Access Pipeline opposition camps at Standing Rock — but those rumors were created through mainstream media’s hyperbole and sensationalism — without much basis in reality.

Now, there is proof corporate media failed by reporting on a nonexistent problem — going so far as to say cleanup crews were on the lookout for ‘dead bodies’ — with the release of a video showing city crews dumping heaps of garbage in one area for no apparent reason.

An extra-capacity garbage truck and other city vehicles can be seen dumping full loads of trash in a pile among scattered contractors’ dumpsters, in video posted to Facebook by Jesse Puente from inside one of the Standing Rock Camps.

Puente narrates that a man — whom he describes as employed by Morton County — can be seen standing near the quickly amassing pile of waste, taking pictures of the progress and attempting to persuade a few of the crew to pose in lawn chairs in front of it.

And as Puente notes, there would be no logical reason for crews to fully load a vehicle with trash in one location and dump it en masse in another — if clearing garbage were the goal, the loaded truck would take it to the dump.

Also, he explains, the massive heap of garbage only recently began — and it isn’t entirely certain the untold volume of trash came from inside the camps.

Despite media rumors scores of water protectors evacuated camps, abandoning refuse and supplies without regard for the environment, several inside the camps told The Daily Haze a massive, group-organized cleanup effort has been underway in Standing Rock for some time.

“I’m kind of amazed at what I’m seeing,” he tells viewers.

Headlines blaming water protectors for leaving an ecological disaster worse than the pipeline they’re opposing could putatively cause, have largely been driven by the ever-perturbed Morton County Sheriff’s Department — which is hell bent on shining the murkiest possible light on Standing Rock camps.

As Puente explains, the sheriff’s department recently launched a self-aggrandizing PR campaign showing personnel taking charge of camp cleanup.

Yet, instead of taking mounds of garbage to the nearby dump, officials busy themselves playing musical Hefty bags.

What the media reports on Morton County makes it appear as though law enforcement are the ‘good guys,’ but, Puente notes, “They’re lyin’ to you.”

He adds, authorities are only trying to make water protectors appear “trashy” and unable to clean up after themselves. Puente even filmed camp-organized work crews hurrying to clean the area, “everybody’s trying to clean but, these guys,” he says, motioning to the suspicious garbage operation, “these guys are bringing their dump and dumping it right here.”

Puente suggests the only possible explanation for such an operation is to stage the scene to make water protectors and environmentalists look terrible to the public — thus subtly undermining some of the earned legitimacy of the movement against fossil fuels.

Of course, mainstream and pseudo-mainstream media pounced on the chance to fall in line with the comfortable government narrative — let the facts be damned.

While Puente’s video doesn’t evince die-hard proof the Morton County Sheriff’s Department had malintent in its creative refuse collection exercise, the lack of evidence showing otherwise — backed up by accounts from camp cleaning crews and independent media on the ground — certainly raise a number of questions.”
FEEDBACK:
“Ronald H. · Rancher at Self-Employed
You are not doing your job as journalists! Those trucks are hired by the Tribe to clean up the camp. The trucks get loads from different areas of the camp and dump in a central point in the camp. Then they have have a different set of trucks to haul to the dumps in Walworth county dump in South Dakota, not to the Morton County dump. These are not Morton County trucks! Get your facts straight, don’t just assume!..”

“..”I worked on clean up at #NoDAPL camp this last weekend. It is obvious that the 3 back to back storms, SRST advising people to leave, and the frequent assaults by police in the midst of extreme cold weather all had the unexpected effect of burying many people’s camps who likely planned to return, yet did not given the circumstances. Props to those helping with clean up. Many items that are usable have been donated to local places that could use them. Many items recycled. Yes if there was time and place to clean and dry out other items, much more could be recycled – yet those resources and human power are not locally available. People have been working to clean up and move to higher ground while facing externally placed deadlines. Of course the local racist biased media use this as opportunity to talk smack once again. (Including looking for “bodies” lmao) Some empty tents and cardboard can be recycled, etc… benzene, oil, and other chemicals in the water cannot be removed. So… when it comes to trash and waste, I will take some jacked up tarps any day, over 50 – 100 years of contaminated water from oil pipeline spills and frack waste contamination. It’s too bad that Morton County doesn’t look in their own trash – maybe they would find their integrity, honesty, and humanity buried in there somewhere. They likely burned them while they were busy taking selfies with half naked freezing water protectors in cages in the background ala Guantanamo Bay and Auschwitz.” – a #waterprotector..”Standing Rock Dakota Access Pipeline Opposition facebook.com

“..About 100 people have helped in clearing the camp. Besides the amount of trash and belongings, other challenges make it more difficult.

Having to chip away at snow and ice to remove trash is slowing the cleanup process; some say it will take weeks for the camp to be cleared.

But there is a bright side to what’s left behind.

“It’s like a shelving for pantry for people that come down from churches and other communities around here to pick up, and, you know, can be useful too,” says Patrick Mantich, Nebraska.

Blankets and tents are among the goods being saved by those cleaning up for reuse at other protest camps.

The effort is a coordination between the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, leaders of the camps and Nick Tilsen from Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation…”

I think a lot of these folks “donated” their items to people who were still at camp, but a lot of it just froze under the snow.

We also had some dumb people with no ears who didn’t believe us when we told them about the weather, so after the first blizzard, they were like “screw this!” and headed out, leaving all their frozen, buried crap behind. Leonardo DiCaprio was uncomfortable with cruel Django Unchained character 17/12/2012 newshub.co.nz
“..He says, “It was this incredibly interesting horrific character. I mean, there was absolutely nothing about this man I could identify with. I hated him and it was one of the most narcissistic, racist characters I’ve ever read in my entire life.”

DiCaprio reveals he almost chose to soften his character – but was persuaded to stick to his tough approach by Foxx and Jackson, who both play slaves, because there really were slave masters like that throughout American history.

He continues, “One of the pivotal moments for me was this initial read through, I wondered if it needed to be this violent and this atrocious to other human beings and it was Sam and Jamie who said, ‘If you sugarcoat this people are gonna resent the hell out of you. You got to push this guy to the outer extreme.’ That is what ignited me into going the way I did into the character. Once I read about the sugar plantations (in history), we’re just scratching the surface of what happened in this country.”

DiCaprio was also hesitant about using the ‘N’ word repeatedly, as dictated by Tarantino’s script, but Jackson let him know none of his black co-stars were offended by the racially derogative term because it was the language of that time.

Foxx explains, “At one point he (DiCaprio) was feeling it was tough saying his lines, ‘nigga, nigga’ and Samuel pulled him aside and says, ‘Hey motherf**ker, this is another Tuesday for us. Let’s go!’ They were really trying to go back to that time.”..”

Swearing on YouTube: Should You Cut the Profanity?

“Published on Dec 11, 2014

While you may curse, use swear words, and say all sorts of profanity with your friends, should you use it in your YouTube videos? There’s certainly benefits to not swearing in your videos if you’re hoping to have as many opportunities available to you as possible (like brand deals), but some creators may feel like they then have to pretend to be someone they’re not. What do you think? Do you eliminate swearing from your videos or do you keep it in?

Biblical Perspective

Profanity – A Biblical Assessment by Wayne Jackson christiancourier.com
“..He wonders how it is that one identifies “profanity.” The Bible only warns against the evil use of language in a general way, but it doesn’t specify which words are to be avoided. Is it a cultural question?

This is an excellent item for study. It is true that this issue is not addressed in a solitary, compact biblical context. There are, though, helpful principles in Scripture that assist in clarifying this bewilderment. Think about these points for a moment…”

Sal: I used to swear “a lot” growing-up due to anger issues and the culture. I remember one swear word in Filipino (parents’ native language) as my parents would say it all the time whenever my siblings or I would do something bad. They would get mad if we repeat it..lol! I didn’t realize how bad it was until I went to college after becoming a Christian (see personal testimony) and my “friends” would tell me that I need to cut it! One friend challenged me to put a quarter in the church offering every time I swore. This was a great challenge as a “poor” college student. I slowly decreased my swearing as I realize I didn’t really have enough money anymore! Lol! My profanity/swearing didn’t go right away. I remembered many years ago I was doing a “church” volunteer activity and a lady from church “challenged” me that the words I was using isn’t used in her household. I never realized what I was saying was “profane”, which was opened my eyes more on the “need” to grow out of this. When I catch myself saying anything “negative” overall now, I try to ask God for forgiveness and double the “negative” with a “positive” (e.g. I would sing/say “Praise the Lord”!) I’m getting better each time..thank you God for helping me!

What are your thoughts? Should “we” swear or not? Why? Feel free to share your sources or websites that you might have to support your answer..

Deep Thought: Is “Oil” causing wars?

“Oil, Conflict, and U.S. National Interests” October 2013

Author: Jeff D. Colgan belfercenter.ksg.harvard.edu

OIL AS A LEADING CAUSE OF WAR

“..Although the threat of “resource wars” over possession of oil reserves is often exaggerated, the sum total of the political effects generated by the oil industry makes oil a leading cause of war. Between one-quarter and one-half of interstate wars since 1973 have been connected to one or more oil-related causal mechanisms. No other commodity has had such an impact on international security.

The influence of oil on conflict is often poorly understood. In U.S. public debates about the 1991 and 2003 Iraq wars, both sides focused excessively on the question of whether the United States was fighting for possession of oil reserves; neither sought a broader understanding of how oil shaped the preconditions for war…

THE ROLE OF FRACKING

…Achieving such an understanding is important in light of recent changes in the United States. As hydraulic fracturing—”fracking”—of shale oil and gas accelerates, energy imports are projected to decline, and North America could even achieve energy independence, in the sense of low or zero net overall energy imports, in the next decade. Yet the United States will continue to import large volumes of oil, and the world price of oil will continue to affect it. Moreover, so long as the rest of the world remains dependent on global oil markets, the fracking revolution will do little to reduce many oil-related threats to international security. The emergence of aggressive, revolutionary leaders in petrostates would likely continue to pose threats to regional security. Petrostates will continue to be weakly institutionalized and thus subject to civil wars, creating the kind of security problems that demand responses by the international community, as occurred in Libya in 2011. Petro-financed insurgent groups such as Hezbollah will persist, as will threats to the shipping lanes and oil transit routes that supply important U.S. allies, such as Japan.

In sum, energy autarky is not the answer. Self-sufficiency will bring economic benefits to the United States, but few gains for national security. So long as the oil market remains globally integrated, national oil imports matter far less than total consumption. Rather than viewing energy self-sufficiency as a panacea, the United States should contribute to international security by making long-term investments in research and development to reduce oil consumption and provide alternative fuel sources in the transportation sector. In addition to the economic and environmental benefits of reducing oil consumption, substantial evidence exists that military and security benefits will accrue from such investments….”

Klare zooms in on four areas – Iraq/Syria, South Sudan, the Crimea/Ukraine, and the South China Sea – to argue that the desire to control valuable oil and gas assets is fuelling long-standing historic tensions. “In a fossil-fuel world, control over oil and gas reserves is an essential component of national power,” he warns…”

Oil War’ Rages in Niger Delta

“Uploaded on Sep 17, 2008

ANCHOR:
Nigerian militants have attacked yet another pipeline in the oil rich country. It comes amidst the heaviest fighting there in two years. The militants have cut Nigeria’s oil output by more than 20 percent since they began a campaign of violence two years ago.

STORY:
Oil has been a burning issue in the Niger Delta since its discovery more than half a century ago. Resentment towards foreign-owned oil companies – accruing billions of dollars a year – has simmered for years as people living in this energy-rich region remain ensnared in poverty, hobbled by the legacy of decades of economic mismanagement and military rule. Now it’s exploded into what one militant group is calling an ‘oil war.’

In the last four days, this rag-tag army has attacked oil interests throughout the Niger Delta – heaping further pressure on Nigeria’s oil output which has been cut by more than 20 percent since militant violence began two years ago.

In the latest attacks the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta or MEND says it’s blown up a flow station belonging to Shell. The military says its successfully repelled a string of attacks, including an attempt to sabotage a Chevron pipeline.

The army is keen to underplay the impact of the escalating violence but a military spokesman confirmed that an explosion had taken place at the Shell flow station.

[Colonel Musa Sagir, Nigerian Joint Mil. Task Force]:
“There was really intense fighting and exchange of fire and in the process of cross fire, I think a bullet hit one of the sensitive and inflammable part of the flow station and there was explosion and it caught
fire.”

The escalating violence has prompted Shell to evacuate some of its staff. Militants claim to be holding 27 oil workers who were kidnapped last week after their oil supply vessel was hijacked.

Despite being outgunned, these men say they’ll never give up until they win a stake in Nigeria’s vast oil wealth.”
Boko Haram Aren’t The Only Militants Causing Chaos In Nigeria , from youtube.com
“..Who Are They?
The Niger Delta Avengers claim to be a new group made up of youth from the region. “We are young, educated, well traveled and most of us were educated in east Europe,” one statement from the group says.
The Avengers have criticized previous Delta insurgent groups for working with the government, while ex-militant leaders urged the new group to halt attacks , saying they are a distraction from solving the region’s problems.
Even so, many locals believe the group is in fact made up of disgruntled former militants or local criminals seeking attention, according to the BBC .
Experts note that the level of coordination and technical expertise of the Avengers’ attacks suggests the group has help from sympathetic insiders at the oil companies.
What Do They Want?
The Niger Delta Avengers have vowed to continue attacks until oil firms leave the region, blaming them for the environmental destruction and economic marginalization of the Delta. “We will make you suffer as you have been made the people of Niger Deltans suffered over the years from environmental degradation, and environment pollution,” they warn international oil companies in one statement.
The group has also called for the Delta region to gain independence from Nigeria, reprising the hard-line demands of earlier insurgencies that had become much less common in recent years. “Their demands are impossible to meet so there will be probably more attacks,” an anonymous security expert told Reuters .
A further complication is the emergence of various splinter groups , which have echoed the demands of older militant movements in the region. For example, one group calling itself the Egbesu Mightier Fraternity has demanded the release of a separatist leader from the nearby region of Biafra. Meanwhile, another group, Red Egbesu, called on anti-corruption authorities to stop pursuing a local warlord nicknamed Tompolo. ..”

The Truth About Pipeline Politics in the Syrian Proxy War

“Published on Oct 7, 2015

http://www.undergroundworldnews.com
Oil politics in the Syrian civil war is a complex web of money deception and proxy war. What began as non-violent grassroots rebellion against Bashar al Assad and the Syrian state has morphed into a complex proxy war involving countless factions and alliances competing for control of oil, and territory. Various nation states and world powers who have their own financial interests in the region are supporting the armies on the ground. This is because of Syria’s strategic importance as a potential gatekeeper between oil reserves from the gulf and oil markets in Europe. There are two different proposed pipelines that will have to run through Syria in order for this to happen. One sponsored by the gulf states called the “Qatar-Turkey pipeline” and one sponsored by the Iranians and Syrians nicknamed the “Islamic pipeline”.

Since the 1990s, Europe has been increasingly dependent on Russian natural gas and oil. In 2014 it was estimated that 42% of the European Union’s natural gas imports originated from Russia. This dependence has limited Europe’s ability to make a show of force against Russia. Last year the U.S introduced economic sanctions against Russia in retaliation for its annexation of Crimea. When the US asked the EU to participate, there was a heated debate amongst the European nations about how exactly to impose sanctions. Eastern Europeans felt especially threatened by Russia’s actions and wanted to enact the harshest penalties possible, however, Western Europeans were well aware that cutting off economic trade with Russia would destabilize their economies. As a result the European Union (EU) has desperately been looking for other sources of natural gas. The “pipeline” which will carry natural gas from Azerbaijan into Europe will help to offset dependence on Russian gas, but will take years to reach full capacity and will not rid Europe of Russian dependence altogether. On top of which European demand for natural gas is expected to rise dramatically in the next 30 years. There is only one known source of gas that can solve Europe’s long term energy needs and that’s source resides in the Middle East underneath the Persian Gulf.

6 essential facts about Iraq’s Kurds

Updated by Zack Beauchamp@zackbeauchampzack@vox.com Aug 12, 2014, 2:20pm EDT vox.com
“…You might wonder, given the Kurds’ long history of persecution and deep desire for a state, why they haven’t just declared independence from Iraq already. There are a number of reasons, including American opposition, but a big one is oil. They don’t yet produce enough to be economically self-sufficient (but they might), and they don’t have legal authority to sell it directly on the market.

Under the current arrangement, the Baghdad government is supposed to handle Kurdish oil sales. They then take the proceeds and divvy them up among the different regions. Kurdistan is supposed to get 17 percent of the nation’s oil sales, but Kurdish leaders say they’re given less than that…”

Nestle CEO: Water Is Not A Human Right, Should Be Privatized by Anthony Gucciardi Posted on April 23, 2013 naturalsociety.com
“…So is water a human right, or should it be owned by big corporations? Well, if water is not here for all of us, then perhaps air should be owned by major corporations as well. And as for crops, Monsanto is already working hard to make sure their monopoly on our staple crops and beyond is well situated. It should really come as no surprise that this Nestle Chairman fights to keep Monsanto’s GMOs alive and well in the food supply, as his ideology lines right up with that of Monsanto.

Drinking Water in Several Oregon Schools Found To Be Contaminated with Multiple Pesticides September 11th, 2012 | Category: Health, News, Oregon, United States defendingwater.net
“…Washington, DC–(ENEWSPF)–September 10, 2012. Traces of pesticides in drinking water were found in eleven rural elementary schools in Oregon, according to a U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) study released on August 30. The study shows a disturbing variety of pesticides that when combined could have dramatic impacts on the health of the children that consume this water on a daily basis.
The study found traces of several different types of pesticides in the drinking water of Dixie and Fairplay, the elementary schools that service Corvallis, Oregon.

Some of the pesticides that were found in the Dixie school water include atrazine, bromacil, diuron, imidacloprid, metolachlor, norflurazon, and simazine. In the nine other schools that were found to have pesticides in their drinking water, seven different pesticides were found in the water at Applegate Elementary in Eugene, and multiple pesticides were also found in the drinking water of Ontario’s Pioneer and Cairo elementary.

Children face unique hazards from pesticide exposure. They take in more pesticides relative to their body weight than adults in the food they eat and air they breathe. Their developing organ systems often make them more sensitive to toxic exposure. The body of evidence in scientific literature shows that pesticide exposure can adversely affect a child’s neurological, respiratory, immune, and endocrine system, even at low levels. The Food Quality Protection Act of 1996 directs EPA to set pesticide residue standards ten times stricter than those considered acceptable for adults, however, this standard has often been ignored…”

Earthquake Hazard – Pipelines
May 5, 2011, by Ken Jorgustin modernsurvivalblog.com

Many variables will surely play into the construction of the natural gas transporter; fortunately, earth scientists already know much about the geology and seismology of the region, and they have learned much more in the 30 years since the oil pipeline’s construction. ..”

Disaster Warning: The Area Under The Keystone XL Pipeline Is Likely To Experience Earthquakes By Rmuse on Sat, May 10th, 2014 at 6:28 pm politicususa.com
“..Both the USGS and OGS reported that there have been a stunning 183 earthquakes of magnitude 3.0 and greater in the Sooner state between October 2013 and April 2014. The two agencies issued the warning advisory because the increase in the rate of earthquakes above 3.0 on the Richter Scale since last October increases the possibility of a “damaging” quake of 5.0 magnitude or higher in central Oklahoma as a result of injecting chemical-laden water used in hydraulic fracturing (fracking) of tight rock formations to “fracture” rock deep underground to extract oil and gas.

To get an idea of the inordinate increase is seismic activity in Oklahoma due to fracking, the long-term average between 1978 and 2008 was about two 3.0 magnitude earthquakes per year. In the past 24 hours there were 5 significant (2.5 magnitude or greater) quakes that accounted for 13% of the quakes worldwide. Oklahoma experienced more earthquakes in 2014 than tremor-prone California that is also well over twice the size of Oklahoma. In the jointly-issued warning advisory, geologists identified the culprit as oil industry wastewater injected into deep geologic rock formations that increases underground pressure, lubricates faults, and causes earthquakes in a process geologists refer to as “injection-induced seismicity.” That is right; geologists have named the cause of the earthquakes that are the result of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking.”..”
Oklahoma Suffers Earthquake Near Oil Pipeline Hub and Mammoth Oil Storage Facility By Rmuse on Wed, Nov 9th, 2016 at 10:38 pm politicususa.com
“…it is true that Oklahoma is historically about as likely to suffer the effects of an earthquake as Kansas will be inundated with an ocean surge during an East-coast hurricane, but that was before the oil industry began injecting chemical-laced water at extremely high pressure into rocks to fracture them and release oil and natural gas. That oil extraction method, fracking, has been linked to all manner of adverse health effects, but it is nearly a certainty that there is more than “a link” to the increasing number, frequency, and strength of earthquakes in and around fracking areas. This is becoming increasingly true in Oklahoma…”

Frackers Turn to Toilet Water in Drought-prone Texas

“..Published on Aug 21, 2015

Top shale oil producer Pioneer Natural Resources Co (PXD.N) has found an unusual way to both save water and cut costs for its wells: tapping the treated runoff from toilets, sinks and showers in west Texas.

Pioneer has signed an 11-year, $117 million deal with the city of Odessa, Texas that will guarantee it access to millions of gallons of treated municipal wastewater each day, for use in nearby oilfields. Deliveries of the so-called effluent, are expected to start at the end of the year.

As crude oil has slid to its lowest level in six years, currently about $40 a barrel, oil and gas companies pumping from shale rock have tried to cut every unnecessary penny from their operations. Water acquisition and transportation can be up to 10 percent of the cost of drilling and fracking a well, according to consulting firm IHS.

Producers are also trying to mitigate long-term risks of water scarcity in the arid Permian Basin of West Texas, where the top U.S. oilfield is situated.

Oil and gas companies operating in area, including Pioneer and Apache Corp (APA.N), have long sought cheaper; more environmentally sound sources of water to use for fracking…”
North Dakota pipeline spews saltwater into Native American reservation

Shell Accused of Failing to Clean Up Nigeria Oil Spills November 03, 2015 10:04 AM Chris Stein voanews.com
“..ACCRA —

Amnesty International and the Center for Environment, Human Rights and Development in Nigeria say multinational oil company Shell has not cleaned up four oil spill sites in the Niger Delta, as the company claims.

Oil pollution in the Ogoniland region of the Niger Delta is so severe the U.N. Environmental Program said in a 2011 study it will take decades to clean up.

Amnesty International says it found “visible pollution” at four oil spill sites there it says Shell claimed to have cleaned up “years ago.”

“There were leaks, spills, in one case dating back to 1970, which have still not been cleaned up,” said Mark Dummett, the business and human rights researcher at Amnesty…”

Critics Call $3 Billion Sabal Trail Pipeline Florida’s Dakota Access Pipeline By Larry Buhl • Sunday, December 4, 2016 – 05:57 desmogblog.com
“…They also say Sabal Trail threatens the fragile limestone surrounding the Floridan Aquifer, one of the largest freshwater aquifers in the world. ..

Eminent Domain Displaces Homeowners

In April FERC granted Sabal Trail a certificate of public convenience and necessity, giving the company a right to eminent domain. Thanks to a 2005 Supreme Court decision, local governments can force homeowners to sell their properties for private economic development projects.

Along the Sabal Trail project route, several residents have been forced out, some surprised that they were even in the path of the pipeline.

Two Georgia brothers are now faced with paying Sabal Trail’s legal fees in defending their property against the pipeline.

James Bell, one of the brothers, documents the company’s aggressive tactics in a video, saying:

“In my personal opinion I don’t see how a private for-profit company should be allowed eminent domain…I might understand it if it was for the greater good of the country but this is not. And it is certainly not the federal government or the state government building some road or highway.”

Bell and others along the Sabal Trail pipeline aren’t the only private landowners who have been displaced by pipeline companies’ right to eminent domain. The issue has sparked outrage among landowners in the way of the Dakota Access, Transco, and Sunoco Logistics pipeline routes. ..”

Spill Contamination Lingering Years Later, Study Says Posted on April 27, 2016 oilpatchdispatch.areavoices.com
“…Researchers found that streams polluted by produced water, also known as saltwater or brine, contained levels of contaminants that often exceeded federal guidelines for safe drinking water or aquatic health.

The study, published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology, also found that soil at spill sites was contaminated with radium, a naturally occurring radioactive element.

A North Dakota Department of Health official who reviewed the study Wednesday said the agency has long been concerned about the impacts of brine spills, which is why it has staff working in the field following up on spills.
