Standing Rock Activists Clear Trash as Tribes Ask Court to Halt Pipeline By Bethania Palma snopes.com
Demonstrators in North Dakota are still on the ground and cleaning up trash left after a blizzard evacuation, and bracing as a new deadline approaches.
“..In early February 2017, news outlets began to report on large quantities of trash left behind at protest camps by demonstrators at Standing Rock — although hundreds of people have remained in the unforgiving North Dakota winter in a nearly year-long standoff over a multi-billion dollar oil pipeline. Organizers told us much of the debris was left behind due to a forced evacuation of the protest camps amid a series of severe December 2016 blizzards, and subsequent sub-zero temperatures froze it to the ground, hindering cleanup.

The Standing Rock Sioux and environmental activists have bitterly opposed the $3.8 billion Energy Transfer Partners pipeline under the Missouri River, fearing a pipeline leak would destroy the tribe’s only source of drinking water and contaminate the supply for millions of people who live downstream from the pipe crossing. The Sioux have also tried to preserve cultural and religious landmarks spread throughout the area, some of which they say have already been destroyed by pipeline construction. Thousands of people have cycled through the encampments since the protest was launched on 1 April 2016, including non-Native activists who oppose fossil fuels as an energy source because it contributes to climate change.

Joye Braun, a front line community organizer with Indigenous Environmental Network and member of the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe, told us that demonstrators have been working in freezing temperatures to clean after two blizzards bore down on North Dakota. Just as thousands had arrived at protest encampments, many were forced to evacuate. The first storm struck on 5 December 2016 and the second came several days later. Since then, freezing temperatures have been an obstacle for cleaning efforts:

We had about 17,000 people here and then there was that big blizzard, then three or four days later, another big blizzard. So we had about 300 or 400 people left cleaning up stuff, some of which has been frozen to the ground… Everybody at camp is working so hard.

Michael A. Wood, Jr., a Marine Corps veteran who founded Veterans Stand for Standing Rock (the organization’s name has since shortened to Veterans Stand), told us 100 to 200 veterans are en route to the site to help with clean-up efforts. Braun said the veterans will be housed on reservation land. Several camps, including the largest, Oceti Sakowin, remain standing with a total of about 800 demonstrators, despite extreme weather. While one media report quoted a police officer saying, “As bad as it sounds, we’re looking for people that may have died and could be wrapped up in a canvas or a tarp or tent,” Wood and Braun both said they know of no fatalities…”

Video Shows Morton County Re-Dumping Trash Inside Standing Rock Camp
Published on February 8, 2017 in Environmental/Freshest News by Claire Bernish thedailyhaze.com
Water protectors stand accused of leaving behind mountains of trash

Mainstream media jumped to believe misinformation over fact.
Morton County was captured on video moving trash, rather than transporting it to the dump.
The operation appears to be staged to make water protectors look careless.

“Much talk has circulated over the last two weeks about appalling quantities of trash left behind by water protectors in the Dakota Access Pipeline opposition camps at Standing Rock — but those rumors were created through mainstream media’s hyperbole and sensationalism — without much basis in reality.

Now, there is proof corporate media failed by reporting on a nonexistent problem — going so far as to say cleanup crews were on the lookout for ‘dead bodies’ — with the release of a video showing city crews dumping heaps of garbage in one area for no apparent reason.

An extra-capacity garbage truck and other city vehicles can be seen dumping full loads of trash in a pile among scattered contractors’ dumpsters, in video posted to Facebook by Jesse Puente from inside one of the Standing Rock Camps.

Puente narrates that a man — whom he describes as employed by Morton County — can be seen standing near the quickly amassing pile of waste, taking pictures of the progress and attempting to persuade a few of the crew to pose in lawn chairs in front of it.

And as Puente notes, there would be no logical reason for crews to fully load a vehicle with trash in one location and dump it en masse in another — if clearing garbage were the goal, the loaded truck would take it to the dump.

Also, he explains, the massive heap of garbage only recently began — and it isn’t entirely certain the untold volume of trash came from inside the camps.

Despite media rumors scores of water protectors evacuated camps, abandoning refuse and supplies without regard for the environment, several inside the camps told The Daily Haze a massive, group-organized cleanup effort has been underway in Standing Rock for some time.

“I’m kind of amazed at what I’m seeing,” he tells viewers.

Headlines blaming water protectors for leaving an ecological disaster worse than the pipeline they’re opposing could putatively cause, have largely been driven by the ever-perturbed Morton County Sheriff’s Department — which is hell bent on shining the murkiest possible light on Standing Rock camps.

As Puente explains, the sheriff’s department recently launched a self-aggrandizing PR campaign showing personnel taking charge of camp cleanup.

Yet, instead of taking mounds of garbage to the nearby dump, officials busy themselves playing musical Hefty bags.

What the media reports on Morton County makes it appear as though law enforcement are the ‘good guys,’ but, Puente notes, “They’re lyin’ to you.”

He adds, authorities are only trying to make water protectors appear “trashy” and unable to clean up after themselves. Puente even filmed camp-organized work crews hurrying to clean the area, “everybody’s trying to clean but, these guys,” he says, motioning to the suspicious garbage operation, “these guys are bringing their dump and dumping it right here.”

Puente suggests the only possible explanation for such an operation is to stage the scene to make water protectors and environmentalists look terrible to the public — thus subtly undermining some of the earned legitimacy of the movement against fossil fuels.

Of course, mainstream and pseudo-mainstream media pounced on the chance to fall in line with the comfortable government narrative — let the facts be damned.

While Puente’s video doesn’t evince die-hard proof the Morton County Sheriff’s Department had malintent in its creative refuse collection exercise, the lack of evidence showing otherwise — backed up by accounts from camp cleaning crews and independent media on the ground — certainly raise a number of questions.”
FEEDBACK:
“Ronald H. · Rancher at Self-Employed
You are not doing your job as journalists! Those trucks are hired by the Tribe to clean up the camp. The trucks get loads from different areas of the camp and dump in a central point in the camp. Then they have have a different set of trucks to haul to the dumps in Walworth county dump in South Dakota, not to the Morton County dump. These are not Morton County trucks! Get your facts straight, don’t just assume!..”

“..”I worked on clean up at #NoDAPL camp this last weekend. It is obvious that the 3 back to back storms, SRST advising people to leave, and the frequent assaults by police in the midst of extreme cold weather all had the unexpected effect of burying many people’s camps who likely planned to return, yet did not given the circumstances. Props to those helping with clean up. Many items that are usable have been donated to local places that could use them. Many items recycled. Yes if there was time and place to clean and dry out other items, much more could be recycled – yet those resources and human power are not locally available. People have been working to clean up and move to higher ground while facing externally placed deadlines. Of course the local racist biased media use this as opportunity to talk smack once again. (Including looking for “bodies” lmao) Some empty tents and cardboard can be recycled, etc… benzene, oil, and other chemicals in the water cannot be removed. So… when it comes to trash and waste, I will take some jacked up tarps any day, over 50 – 100 years of contaminated water from oil pipeline spills and frack waste contamination. It’s too bad that Morton County doesn’t look in their own trash – maybe they would find their integrity, honesty, and humanity buried in there somewhere. They likely burned them while they were busy taking selfies with half naked freezing water protectors in cages in the background ala Guantanamo Bay and Auschwitz.” – a #waterprotector..”Standing Rock Dakota Access Pipeline Opposition facebook.com

Having to chip away at snow and ice to remove trash is slowing the cleanup process; some say it will take weeks for the camp to be cleared.

But there is a bright side to what’s left behind.

“It’s like a shelving for pantry for people that come down from churches and other communities around here to pick up, and, you know, can be useful too,” says Patrick Mantich, Nebraska.

Blankets and tents are among the goods being saved by those cleaning up for reuse at other protest camps.

Sabal Trail Transmission, LLC sabaltrailtransmission.com

“..Sabal Trail Transmission, LLC (“Sabal Trail”), a joint venture of Spectra Energy Corp. NextEra Energy, Inc. and Duke Energy, is an approximately 515-mile interstate natural gas pipeline to provide transportation services for power generation needs to Florida Power and Light (“FPL”) and Duke Energy of Florida (“DEF”) by the end of June 2017.

The Sabal Trail underground pipeline will bring additional affordable, clean natural gas supplies to Florida, while increasing the reliability of the region’s energy delivery system and positively impacting the economy in the Southeast region of the United States, specifically Alabama, Florida and Georgia. The Sabal Trail project will provide economic stimulus in the form of increased tax revenue and local jobs. According to an economic study, the pipeline project will immediately create jobs for hardworking men and women in these three states, with the end product being capable of transporting over 1 billion cubic feet per day or more of natural gas to serve local distribution companies, industrial users and natural gas-fired power generators in the Southeast markets.

Renewable energy sources, like wind and solar, are not keeping pace with the population growth and has led to the state looking elsewhere for a more sustainable future.

Oil pipelines have not held the cleanest of reputations as of late, despite the fact that they are 70 times safer, accident-wise, than freighter trucks. Incidents may be fewer but the impact of an accident with the pipeline would be far more detrimental to the surrounding public and nature.

“..The Bells are just one of many families in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida who are being impacted by the Sabal Trail Transmission, a $3 billion project with the goal of beginning service by May 1, 2017. The 515-mile pipeline would help power Florida’s growing energy demand—more than 60 percent of the Sunshine State’s utilities are reliant on gas.

Behind the project are Spectra Energy Corp, NextEra Energy, Inc., and Duke Energy; the natural gas will be provided to Florida Power and Light, owned by NextEra and Duke.

Sabal Trail spill, protests across U.S. spur debate over natural gas pipeline in Florida By Bruce Ritchie | 11/17/16 05:42 AM EST politico.com
“…The Georgia Water Coalition on Wednesday listed the Sabal Trail pipeline on its annual “dirty dozen” list of threats to rivers in the state. Several of those rivers, including the Chattahoochee, Flint and Withlacoochee rivers, eventually flow into Florida.

John Quarterman of the WWALS Watershed Coalition environmental group in Georgia said the public was told such accidents were not possible.

“So what else can happen that they said couldn’t happen?” Quarterman asked. “And why should we take that risk or any risk for this pipeline that has never been of any benefit to the state?”

The bentonite clay in the discharged drilling mud can deplete oxygen in the river that aquatic life needs to survive, Quarterman’s group says. He said he’s also concerned that drilling could cause cave systems to collapse and cause more discharges into rivers and the Floridan Aquifer, the source of drinking water for the region.

Bert Langley, director of compliance at the Georgia Environmental Protection Division in Atlanta, said the pressurized drilling mud apparently surfaced through a crevice in the bedrock beneath the river bottom. While technically the release of any drilling mud is a permit violation, Langley said, he noted that the company acted quickly to contain the discharge and there has been no additional releases.

“We are going to monitor it a little bit,” he said. “As long as things continue the way they are, I doubt we will take any action as far as an enforcement action.”

The Sabal Trail pipeline, a joint venture of Spectra Energy, Duke Energy and the parent company of Florida Power & Light Co., will extend 515 miles from central Alabama to Osceola County in Central Florida. The company began construction in August after receiving required permits but it faces continued opposition from groups, including the Sierra Club.

Environmentalists have filed federal lawsuits to try to block the Sabal Trail pipeline, claiming it’s a threat to rivers and the Floridan Aquifer.

Stop the Sabal Trail Pipeline – Protest Video , from youtube.com
“Published on Nov 11, 2016

Fellow Floridians, it’s time to have a serious talk. While we’ve been looking the other way, there have been machinations devised and put into action to both rape our ecological resources and dupe the citizens of this state out of their rights and finances. The Sabal Trail Pipeline is 515 miles of potential disaster waiting just a few feet below the ground. Mind you, the United States has over 2.5 MILLION miles of these pipelines crossing the country, and just recently we heard news from Alabama regarding a similar structure that caused a significant disaster. The area of North Florida that the pipeline is traversing runs right through the most exposed part of the Floridan aquifer as well as through karst limestone which has a tendency to be unstable. Further, this pipeline represents a 3.2 BILLION DOLLAR investment into an archaic and soon-to-be-obsolete source of energy; it’s also not a source of local jobs, as all of the materials, workers… everything down to the Port-a-Lets come from out-of-state. As Floridians, we have absolutely ZERO vested interest in these pipelines—they offer no economic incentive in any form and the citizens of the state are the ones bearing all of the risk and damages.

This is what we all need to do: support the Stop Sabal Trail Pipeline movement as well as all of the other grassroots activist groups fighting to stop corporate intrusion into our right to a clean and safe Earth to live on. Follow all of these groups on social media, and lend your support in any way possible. The time is NOW to take action—we do not have a single moment left to spare. North Dakota: Why Were U.S. Veterans at Standing Rock?

At Least 2,000 Veterans Arrive at Standing Rock to Protest Dakota Pipeline By Michael Edison Hayden Catherine Thorbecke EVAN SIMON
Dec 4, 2016, 2:29 PM ET abcnews.go.com
“.. Chicago native David Hulse, 34, a Navy veteran who served in Iraq told ABC News that he decided at the last minute to join the protests, describing his involvement as “not a mission of war, but a mission of peace.”

“Seeing so many veterans show up,” Hulse said. “Out here, it’s brotherhood.” ..

Among the veterans are some high-profile names, including U.S. Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard, Democrat of Hawaii, who gained prominence when she left the Democratic National Committee to campaign for Sen. Bernie Sanders during his bid for the Democratic presidential nomination this year. Gabbard has frequently voiced support for the Dakota Access protest movement over social media. ..”

The band of US veterans who stood with protesters at Standing Rock have announced their next stop Written by Lila MacLellan December 07, 2016 qz.com
“…To the nation’s surprise, a day after 2,000 veterans and first responders appeared out of nowhere to support the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s protest of the Dakota Access Pipeline, the US Army Corps of Engineers effectively shut down the project. Now that same veterans group has announced plans to take their army for social justice on the road, giving hope to environmentalists and peace activists everywhere.

The presence of the veterans heightened the dramatic tension in what was largely seen as a noble battle between a small group of Native Americans and environmentalists against heavily armed police. During the course of the protests there were several high-profile clashes, including some in which police used rubber bullets and tear gas on activists. One night the police turned a water cannon on men and women despite sub-freezing temperatures. Opponents of the oil pipeline had spent months working to derail its construction because its planned route would cross within a half-mile of the Standing Rock Sioux reservation border. A breach would have put the local water supply at risk….

Now the leaders of the veterans group have announced plans to take their “peaceful, unarmed militia” to Flint, Michigan, where their presence will bring reporters and cameras, once again in service of a struggle for clean water.

Last year, regulators found that Flint’s water supply contained illegally high levels of lead. The problem had been essentially ignored for more than a year after residents first complained of rashes, headaches and a foul odor from the brown or yellowish water that ran from their taps. As an investigation into the crisis surfaced stunning cases of overlooked illnesses and warnings, Flint—where 40% of the 100,000 residents live in poverty, and the majority of residents are black—came to represent the fallout from America’s tolerance of extreme inequality. Public attention has since faded, however, even though the crisis has not been fully resolved…”

Protesters at Standing Rock celebrate an unexpected victory
This story is a part of Across Women’s Lives PRI’s The World pri.org December 05, 2016 · 2:30 PM EST By Jasmine Garsd
“..The very first man I met upon arriving at the camp was a Navajo vet, named John Shirley. “I’m here to be, basically, a human shield,” he explained.

Shirley is a veteran of the first Iraq War. He came from Arizona to guard the protesters. I met him at the entrance to the sprawling camp, where, in recent weeks, protesters have clashed with National Guard soldiers and local police. And that’s when veterans like Shirley decided to come help people. To be that human shield.

To “stand there, close my eyes, and take whatever comes at me. As long as I can block and deflect whatever it may be … you know, that’s the way we was trained,” he says.

Like many veterans, he felt outraged at the way protesters were being treated by police. And he was also frustrated that Native lands and resources could be endangered by the pipeline. “I never thought I would be doing this on American soil,” he says. “Protecting the American people from their own government. I never thought that would happen, you know?”

Several thousand veterans felt the same way, pouring into the camp over the weekend. At a meeting Saturday night, in a warehouse outside Standing Rock, veterans were instructed to be nonviolent. Sage burned while men and women in uniform received marching orders: “We will not instigate.” They were told to spread the orders among themselves. No direct confrontation, and nothing that could harm the cause.

At that warehouse, there was a sense the pipeline was inevitable. By the next afternoon, they found out that wasn’t the case.

At the camp, Brandi King, a Nakota veteran of Iraq, said nonviolence is a challenging order for a warrior. “Fighting for peace is a lot harder than — I mean anyone can pull a trigger. … Actually being peaceful, and fighting for that — that takes a warrior. It takes a strong person to be peaceful.”….

King said after 10 years of not knowing what to do with herself, she finally began to heal at Standing Rock. “This — seeing people together, seeing people support each other, that provides healing for me. Seeing my indigenous brothers and sisters being able to stand up with pride, provides a healing for me.”

On his motivation to go to Standing Rock

“I think a lot of veterans share my feelings that with these last couple of wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that we got cheated. We were lied to from our government, and we went and we fought a war based on a lie. So a lot of our guys are feeling that our service really was for nothing, and so now we’re going out there because this is what we signed up for, this is where our passion is, this is what we signed up to defend, are the people here in our country against all enemies, foreign and domestic. And right now, I love my government, I love my country, but the government is kind of cracking down on peaceful protesters, and it broke my heart to watch these people being sprayed with water in 25-degree temperatures. That’s inhumane, that’s unethical and that’s un-American.”

On where he stands on the issue

“I’ve got friends on both sides. I understand both sides of the story here and that’s a little bit unfortunate — you catch flak from both ends. … I will say that the general consensus of those guys, they do agree with me when I say we need to find alternative sources of energy and we have the means and the technology to do so. And we need to move away from sucking the earth’s life blood out of the ground and polluting our air. And it’s possible, and I don’t understand why people are — you know, the people with the money who make those decisions — are pushing away from that.”..”

Tension brews as outsiders trash camps, mooch off tribe
“…“They are coming in, taking food, clothing etc and occupying space without any desire to participate in camp maintenance and without respect of tribal protocols,” she wrote. “These people are treating it like it is Burning Man or The Rainbow Gathering and I even witnessed several wandering in and out of camps comparing it to those festivals.”

Kim Davis Hearing Ends In Handcuffs: She’s Going To Jail, Folks!
September 3, 2015 reverbpress.com
“…I’d almost feel sorry for Davis if she weren’t a hateful hypocrite actively trying to discriminate against others. Lack of pity aside, I do hope that Kim Davis will wake up to the fact that she’s obligated to leave her job if she doesn’t want to issue marriage licenses to same sex couples. Sure, I think Davis should be impeached, but if she has a sincere emotional conflict — and that’s a big “if” — there’s a simple alternative. Rather than issue the licenses herself, Kim Davis need only have someone else in her office handle the situation while she stands aside…

Anti-Gay Marriage Clerk Kim Davis Goes To Jail, from youtube.com

“Published on Sep 3, 2015

Kentucky clerk Kim Davis is going to continue not signing gay marriage certificates, but starting today she will be not signing them in jail. Cenk Uygur and John Iadarola (Think Tank), hosts of the The Young Turks, break it down. Tell us what you think in the comment section below.

“Embattled Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis has been ordered to jail by U.S. District Court Judge David Bunning, according to the Herald Leader’s John Cheeves:

Earlier on Thursday, Davis told Fox News contributor Todd Starnes that she was prepared for this outcome. “I’ve weighed the cost and I’m prepared to go to jail, I sure am,” she said. “This has never been a gay or lesbian issue for me. This is about upholding the word of God.””..”

Four Reasons–From A Christian Perspective–Why Kim Davis Is 100% Wrong

“…Now imagine that the restaurant’s owners decided to start selling alcohol…. As an employee, you are NOT being forced to drink alcohol in violation of your religious liberty. And if you decide that having a job where you sell alcohol to others goes against your moral code, you are free to find another job, right?…

It does say quite a bit about the issue of divorce. It seems to say that if a person gets a divorce for a reason other than infidelity and then remarries, that person is guilty of adultery (that’s one of the big 10!). I wonder how many divorced people Kim Davis has issued marriage licenses to…..”

Folks, you’re missing the point about the Kentucky clerk’s jail sentence Written by Allen West on September 4, 2015 allenbwest.com
“..Jefferson didn’t want the state to establish religion that would lead to state persecution of religious freedom — the reason why the Pilgrims came to America. That’s why the First Amendment to our US Constitution states, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” In America, the citizen has the freedom of religion; the state can’t institute an atmosphere of freedom from religion.

And so I find it rather interesting that in Kentucky, Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis found herself spending last night in jail for her religious belief. And spare me comparisons to segregation. Blacks were granted rights by way of the 13th-15th Amendments, and it was the Democrat party who sought to deny them.

What I found most absurd were the comments of White House press secretary Josh Earnest when asked about Mrs. Davis’ situation. Earnest declared yesterday, “No public official is above the rule of law”; the hypocrisy of the White House spokesperson saying such is absurd, at a minimum….”

Muslim flight attendant says she was suspended for refusing to serve alcohol
By Emanuella Grinberg and Carma Hassan, CNN
Updated 4:07 PM ET, Sun September 6, 2015 | Video Source: CNN
“…She wants to do her job without serving alcohol in accordance with her Islamic faith — just as she was doing before her suspension, her lawyer said.

“What this case comes down to is no one should have to choose between their career and religion and it’s incumbent upon employers to provide a safe environment where employees can feel they can practice their religion freely,” said Lena Masri, an attorney with Michigan chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

Should this lady be also “jailed” for refusing to serve alcohol due to her religious beliefs?
