“..Religious Faith

During the same year as his wedding to Testolini, Prince also became a Jehovah’s Witness, embracing the faith after years of study though he was raised as a Seventh-Day Adventist. His mentor as a Witness was bassist Larry Graham, who had played with Sly & the Family Stone and thus was also a major musical influence.

Prince was believed to have taken part in what’s referred to as field service for his faith, having once visited a Jewish couple in Eden Prairie, Minnesota and leaving behind a copy of the Witness publication The Watchtower. His language and performance sensibilities changed somewhat, with some fans questioning how some of the conservative aspects of his religion jibed with the explicit nature of past songs. Contradicting the rock/soul persona, others have pointed out that Prince has historically had songs that were clearly Christian in nature, as seen with “The Ladder,” “The Holy River,” “The Cross” and “God,” the gospel B-side to the single “Purple Rain.” ..”

“Published on May 8, 2016

New upload 2016. Do we really know the man behind the music? This Documentary film, explores how Prince – showman, artist, enigma – revolutionised the perception of black music in the 1980s with worldwide hits such as 1999, Kiss, Raspberry Beret and Alphabet Street. He became a global sensation with the release of the Oscar-winning, semi-autobiographical movie Purple Rain in 1984, embarking on an incredible journey of musical self-discovery that continued right up to his passing in April 2016, aged 57.

This documentary primarily focuses on Prince’s creative and commercial output during the 1980’s, with anecdotes provided by several of the key collaborators of the era, some great insight is provided into the inner workings of the 1980’s Purple Reign.

Packed with live performance and studio footage, rare photographs and new interviews with friends, confidants, fellow musicians and other people close to Prince, the program sheds light on one of the industry’s most innovative and influential artists.

From the psychedelic Around the World in a Day to his masterpiece album Sign O’ the Times and experiments with hip-hop and jazz, Prince was one of most ambitious and prolific songwriters of his generation. He tested the boundaries of taste and decency with explicit sexual lyrics and stage shows during his early career and in the 1990s fought for ownership of his name and control of his music, played out in a public battle with his former label, Warner. Highly regarded as one of the most flamboyant live performers ever, Prince was a controversial and famously elusive creative force.

When Doves Cry by Prince songfacts.com
“.. Prince wrote this song for his movie Purple Rain. In the film, the song plays under a montage after his character loses his girl (Apollonia) to his rival (Morris – Morris Day of The Time). We see Prince riding his motorcycle along with shots of intimate moments with Apollonia. In the movie, Prince has a difficult relationship with his father, who beats his mom. Scenes of his father come in on the lyrics where Prince calls him “demanding.”

The film is semi-autobiographical, but how much is based on real life remains a mystery, as Prince rarely gave interviews and didn’t talk about his personal life. In the movie, the song expresses his fear of becoming like his parents. When the doves cry, that’s his musical refuge – the barrage of keyboards in the chorus represents the doves crying…”

“…2. HE WAS A JEHOVAH’S WITNESS.

Baptized in 2001, Prince was a devout Jehovah’s Witness; he even went door-to-door. In October 2003, a woman in Eden Prairie, Minnesota opened her door to discover the famously shy artist and his bassist, former Sly and the Family Stone member Larry Graham, standing in front of her home. “My first thought is ‘Cool, cool, cool. He wants to use my house for a set. I’m glad! Demolish the whole thing! Start over!,'” the woman told The Star Tribune. “Then they start in on this Jehovah’s Witnesses stuff. I said, ‘You know what? You’ve walked into a Jewish household, and this is not something I’m interested in.’ He says, ‘Can I just finish?’ Then the other guy, Larry Graham, gets out his little Bible and starts reading scriptures about being Jewish and the land of Israel.”..”

Prince: how did he die and what happened to his money? The big questions, a year after his death By Ben Bryant 21 April 2017 • 5:54pm telegraph.co.uk
How, exactly, did Prince die?
“..
Prince died on April 21, 2016, in a lift in his Paisley Park home in Carver County, Minneapolis, from an overdose of a powerful opioid painkiller.

A one-page autopsy report recorded his death as an accident and said “The decedent self-administered fentanyl”.

Many friends, relatives, and former girlfriends said they never saw him take drugs, although some – including his ex-wife – have said that in hindsight there were warning signs of his addiction.

There may have been other contributing factors that led to his death, but if so they could remain secret for a long time. Under Minnesota law the full autopsy report can be kept secret for up to 30 years unless the next of kin agree to release it. The question of who provided Prince with the drugs remains open, and the investigation is still active, according to Minnesota police.

Now You Know: Explanation of Garbage left at Standing Rock

Standing Rock Activists Clear Trash as Tribes Ask Court to Halt Pipeline By Bethania Palma snopes.com
Demonstrators in North Dakota are still on the ground and cleaning up trash left after a blizzard evacuation, and bracing as a new deadline approaches.
“..In early February 2017, news outlets began to report on large quantities of trash left behind at protest camps by demonstrators at Standing Rock — although hundreds of people have remained in the unforgiving North Dakota winter in a nearly year-long standoff over a multi-billion dollar oil pipeline. Organizers told us much of the debris was left behind due to a forced evacuation of the protest camps amid a series of severe December 2016 blizzards, and subsequent sub-zero temperatures froze it to the ground, hindering cleanup.

The Standing Rock Sioux and environmental activists have bitterly opposed the $3.8 billion Energy Transfer Partners pipeline under the Missouri River, fearing a pipeline leak would destroy the tribe’s only source of drinking water and contaminate the supply for millions of people who live downstream from the pipe crossing. The Sioux have also tried to preserve cultural and religious landmarks spread throughout the area, some of which they say have already been destroyed by pipeline construction. Thousands of people have cycled through the encampments since the protest was launched on 1 April 2016, including non-Native activists who oppose fossil fuels as an energy source because it contributes to climate change.

Joye Braun, a front line community organizer with Indigenous Environmental Network and member of the Cheyenne River Sioux tribe, told us that demonstrators have been working in freezing temperatures to clean after two blizzards bore down on North Dakota. Just as thousands had arrived at protest encampments, many were forced to evacuate. The first storm struck on 5 December 2016 and the second came several days later. Since then, freezing temperatures have been an obstacle for cleaning efforts:

We had about 17,000 people here and then there was that big blizzard, then three or four days later, another big blizzard. So we had about 300 or 400 people left cleaning up stuff, some of which has been frozen to the ground… Everybody at camp is working so hard.

Michael A. Wood, Jr., a Marine Corps veteran who founded Veterans Stand for Standing Rock (the organization’s name has since shortened to Veterans Stand), told us 100 to 200 veterans are en route to the site to help with clean-up efforts. Braun said the veterans will be housed on reservation land. Several camps, including the largest, Oceti Sakowin, remain standing with a total of about 800 demonstrators, despite extreme weather. While one media report quoted a police officer saying, “As bad as it sounds, we’re looking for people that may have died and could be wrapped up in a canvas or a tarp or tent,” Wood and Braun both said they know of no fatalities…”

Video Shows Morton County Re-Dumping Trash Inside Standing Rock Camp
Published on February 8, 2017 in Environmental/Freshest News by Claire Bernish thedailyhaze.com
Water protectors stand accused of leaving behind mountains of trash

Mainstream media jumped to believe misinformation over fact.
Morton County was captured on video moving trash, rather than transporting it to the dump.
The operation appears to be staged to make water protectors look careless.

“Much talk has circulated over the last two weeks about appalling quantities of trash left behind by water protectors in the Dakota Access Pipeline opposition camps at Standing Rock — but those rumors were created through mainstream media’s hyperbole and sensationalism — without much basis in reality.

Now, there is proof corporate media failed by reporting on a nonexistent problem — going so far as to say cleanup crews were on the lookout for ‘dead bodies’ — with the release of a video showing city crews dumping heaps of garbage in one area for no apparent reason.

An extra-capacity garbage truck and other city vehicles can be seen dumping full loads of trash in a pile among scattered contractors’ dumpsters, in video posted to Facebook by Jesse Puente from inside one of the Standing Rock Camps.

Puente narrates that a man — whom he describes as employed by Morton County — can be seen standing near the quickly amassing pile of waste, taking pictures of the progress and attempting to persuade a few of the crew to pose in lawn chairs in front of it.

And as Puente notes, there would be no logical reason for crews to fully load a vehicle with trash in one location and dump it en masse in another — if clearing garbage were the goal, the loaded truck would take it to the dump.

Also, he explains, the massive heap of garbage only recently began — and it isn’t entirely certain the untold volume of trash came from inside the camps.

Despite media rumors scores of water protectors evacuated camps, abandoning refuse and supplies without regard for the environment, several inside the camps told The Daily Haze a massive, group-organized cleanup effort has been underway in Standing Rock for some time.

“I’m kind of amazed at what I’m seeing,” he tells viewers.

Headlines blaming water protectors for leaving an ecological disaster worse than the pipeline they’re opposing could putatively cause, have largely been driven by the ever-perturbed Morton County Sheriff’s Department — which is hell bent on shining the murkiest possible light on Standing Rock camps.

As Puente explains, the sheriff’s department recently launched a self-aggrandizing PR campaign showing personnel taking charge of camp cleanup.

Yet, instead of taking mounds of garbage to the nearby dump, officials busy themselves playing musical Hefty bags.

What the media reports on Morton County makes it appear as though law enforcement are the ‘good guys,’ but, Puente notes, “They’re lyin’ to you.”

He adds, authorities are only trying to make water protectors appear “trashy” and unable to clean up after themselves. Puente even filmed camp-organized work crews hurrying to clean the area, “everybody’s trying to clean but, these guys,” he says, motioning to the suspicious garbage operation, “these guys are bringing their dump and dumping it right here.”

http://alternativemediasyndicate.com/…”

Puente suggests the only possible explanation for such an operation is to stage the scene to make water protectors and environmentalists look terrible to the public — thus subtly undermining some of the earned legitimacy of the movement against fossil fuels.

Of course, mainstream and pseudo-mainstream media pounced on the chance to fall in line with the comfortable government narrative — let the facts be damned.

While Puente’s video doesn’t evince die-hard proof the Morton County Sheriff’s Department had malintent in its creative refuse collection exercise, the lack of evidence showing otherwise — backed up by accounts from camp cleaning crews and independent media on the ground — certainly raise a number of questions.”
FEEDBACK:
“Ronald H. · Rancher at Self-Employed
You are not doing your job as journalists! Those trucks are hired by the Tribe to clean up the camp. The trucks get loads from different areas of the camp and dump in a central point in the camp. Then they have have a different set of trucks to haul to the dumps in Walworth county dump in South Dakota, not to the Morton County dump. These are not Morton County trucks! Get your facts straight, don’t just assume!..”

“..”I worked on clean up at #NoDAPL camp this last weekend. It is obvious that the 3 back to back storms, SRST advising people to leave, and the frequent assaults by police in the midst of extreme cold weather all had the unexpected effect of burying many people’s camps who likely planned to return, yet did not given the circumstances. Props to those helping with clean up. Many items that are usable have been donated to local places that could use them. Many items recycled. Yes if there was time and place to clean and dry out other items, much more could be recycled – yet those resources and human power are not locally available. People have been working to clean up and move to higher ground while facing externally placed deadlines. Of course the local racist biased media use this as opportunity to talk smack once again. (Including looking for “bodies” lmao) Some empty tents and cardboard can be recycled, etc… benzene, oil, and other chemicals in the water cannot be removed. So… when it comes to trash and waste, I will take some jacked up tarps any day, over 50 – 100 years of contaminated water from oil pipeline spills and frack waste contamination. It’s too bad that Morton County doesn’t look in their own trash – maybe they would find their integrity, honesty, and humanity buried in there somewhere. They likely burned them while they were busy taking selfies with half naked freezing water protectors in cages in the background ala Guantanamo Bay and Auschwitz.” – a #waterprotector..”Standing Rock Dakota Access Pipeline Opposition facebook.com

“..About 100 people have helped in clearing the camp. Besides the amount of trash and belongings, other challenges make it more difficult.

Having to chip away at snow and ice to remove trash is slowing the cleanup process; some say it will take weeks for the camp to be cleared.

But there is a bright side to what’s left behind.

“It’s like a shelving for pantry for people that come down from churches and other communities around here to pick up, and, you know, can be useful too,” says Patrick Mantich, Nebraska.

Blankets and tents are among the goods being saved by those cleaning up for reuse at other protest camps.

The effort is a coordination between the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, leaders of the camps and Nick Tilsen from Thunder Valley Community Development Corporation…”

I think a lot of these folks “donated” their items to people who were still at camp, but a lot of it just froze under the snow.

We also had some dumb people with no ears who didn’t believe us when we told them about the weather, so after the first blizzard, they were like “screw this!” and headed out, leaving all their frozen, buried crap behind. In their defense, a lot of them left on busses and in packed cars and didn’t have room for their stuff. ..”

Spotlight: Celebrity-Carrie Fisher’s “success”!

After watching-reading the news of “celebrities” that have died recently that I looked up to growing-up, I pondered this question-“Can celebrities have success?” Success can be defined in many ways, but I’m referring to success as battling our “life challenges”. My first “spotlight” is Carrie Fisher…

Carrie Fisher seem to successfully beat her “bi-polar” mental illness by completing treatment in the mental hospital. She still had challenges, but she overcame (eg. drugs) them successfully though her one-act Broadway show (“Wishful Drinking”), wrote a book (The Princess Diarist ) , etc… she was gifted with words!

“.. Carrie Frances Fisher, the American actress, producer, writer, and humorist better known for her role as Princess Leia in the Star Wars movie series died Tuesday at age 60. Fisher was born to actress Debbie Reynolds (a Nazarene) and singer Eddie Fisher (a Jew). She was born in Beverly Hills, California. Fisher’s paternal grandparents were Jewish Russian immigrants. Fisher was raised a Protestant. However, her father’s religion influenced her so much that she later started identifying as Jewish. According to Fisher, it was her father singing in the synagogue that impacted her spirituality. In an interview given to JWeekly, a San Francisco-based Jewish newspaper, Fisher said that she and her daughter often used to attend Jewish services and take part in Shabbat meals. “We preach the truth, and if that means poking fun at some of the traditions—well, hey, that’s just part of it. Jesus spent his career exposing the Pharisees and Sadducees because they weren’t worshipping God, they were worshipping traditions. Those people are still with us today,” he told People in 1984.

Todd appears to be the most outspoken about his faith in the family trio.

Carrie described her faith: “I love the idea of God, but it’s not stylistically in keeping with the way I function. I would describe myself as an enthusiastic agnostic who would be happy to be shown that there is a God.”

Reynolds didn’t get to see her daughter “as Carrie was on her way back from England and none of us really got to see her other than in the hospital,” Pastor Fish..

Her son, Todd, became a Christian in 1980, and was later ordained as a minister. He founded Hiding Place, along with musician Henry Cutrona of Christian country rock band Gentle Faith. Deep Thought: Ever been misunderstood?

I think of the song “Civil War” (e.g. failure-to-communicate) from GNR when I watch/read/listen to news out there where there is fighting due to “misunderstanding”..

Myth: Sikhs are terrorists too
‘Terrorist, go back to your country,’ attacker yelled in assault of Sikh man
By Sarah Kaplan September 10, 2015 washingtonpost.com
“…Inderjit Singh Mukker, a father of two on his way to the grocery store in his Chicago suburb, pulled over when the vehicle behind kept tailgating him, according to the Sikh Coalition. The 53-year-old Sikh man, who wears a beard and turban, expected that the person in the other car would just drive past.

Instead, the Coalition says, the other driver got out and stormed toward him, reaching into Mukker’s car and repeatedly punching him in the face. Mukker lost consciousness and had to be taken to the hospital, where he received treatment for a fractured cheekbone, bruising and blood loss and six stitches for the lacerations on his face…

…“For Sikh Americans, the unique markers of religious identity — the turban, the beard — these markers are associated with the markers of terrorism,” he said.

In other words, “People see a Sikh and construe them as the enemy.”

On Sept. 15, 2001, four days after 9/11, Balbir Singh Sodhi was shot and killed outside his gas station in Arizona. The gunman mistook the 49-year-old Sikh, an immigrant from India, for an Arab, and said he killed him in retaliation for the attacks. The attacker was found guilty of murder and sentenced to death.

In the following month, the Sikh Coalition recorded at least 300 cases of violence and discrimination against Sikhs in the U.S. The next 14 years have seen hundreds more. In 2009, the Coalition found that 9 percent of Sikh adults in New York have been physically assaulted for their religion — usually by people, who in addition to their violent vigilantism, apparently remain unaware of the distinction between Sikhism and Islam. “Osama bin Laden” and “terrorist” are common slurs…”

Fact: Who and What is a Sikh? sikhs.org
“…The founder of the Sikh religion was Guru Nanak who was born in 1469. He preached a message of love and understanding and criticized the blind rituals of the Hindus and Muslims. Guru Nanak passed on his enlightened leadership of this new religion to nine successive Gurus. The final living Guru, Guru Gobind Singh died in 1708. ..”

Offended?

Church

5 ways to deal with extroverts at church when you are an introvert By Lydia Taggart, FamilyShare kinston.com
“..If you have ever been offended by someone at church, it was most likely from an extrovert. Not intentional, just lacking that ‘think before you speak’ talent. (Unless it was from an introvert, then you can be sure it was well thought-out and intentional.)

We’ve all heard the idea that we should think before we speak. Introverts actually do.

As Marti Olsen Laney says in her book The Introvert Advantage, there is a longer neural pathway for stimuli processing for introverts. They have a more complicated path through long term memory and planning to process interactions and events. Introverts simultaneously are carefully attending to their internal thoughts and feelings while they process information.

An introvert may appear avoidant, or shy, while they are really just thinking before they speak. They process their thoughts internally. Extroverts have a difficult time thinking before they speak as they actually process their thoughts externally.

Introverts will share their ideas, but they have been formed and reached the desired shape first.

Knowing that we are wired differently can ease the discomfort of interacting with one another. Here are a few things to keep in mind when striving for a better experience at church.

1. Build on commonalities

Rather than finding the differences between people and causing separations, let’s focus on what we have in common and build on that…”

Ellen DeGeneres defends her Usain Bolt tweet some claimed was racist
Kevin Kaduk,Fourth-Place Medal 2 hours 24 minutes ago (August 16th 2016) yahoo.com
“…Some social media users took issue with the image of a white woman riding on a black man’s back and fired back at the accounts.

“So the first thing that pops in your head when looking at this pic is ‘oh let me jump onto his back like he’s a common mule?” one Twitter user wrote.

“No matter if there was no ill intent, it still has racial undertones,” wrote one Facebook user.

“An apology won’t do, this is utterly [expletive] ridiculous, how dare you?” wrote another person on Twitter.

The overwhelming majority of DeGeneres’ followers, however, defended the star.

“What’s wrong with it?” Bryan Young wrote on Twitter. “She’s saying he’s fast. Nothing more, nothing less.”

“People love creating stories. Ellen’s apparently now a racist,” one person responded.

It’s impossible to believe that the comedian had any ill intent or any hidden message. DeGeneres is one of the biggest openly gay stars in Hollywood and has built a legion of fans by treating everyone equally and with respect — from the everyday people she features on her show to the biggest movie stars. As she said in her tweet, sending a racist message would be the exact opposite of her true self.

DeGeneres also has had Bolt on her show before. The three-time 100-meter gold medalist appeared with Ellen and the show tweeted about the time Bolt “lost” a race to a young viral video sensation.

On the other hand, you have to figure her social media team could have seen the criticism coming in today’s climate and taken an easier route for a Bolt-related joke.

What do you think? Was Ellen’s tweet out of bounds?..”
