Neutral Perspective: Should or shouldn’t Businesses have the “right” to refuse serving “particular groups” ?

The Right To Refuse Service? Businesses and Discrimination Louis Marlin — February 4, 2014 business2community.com
“..Restaurants and stores qualify as “public accommodations” even if they’re a private business. As such, discrimination laws apply just as much on private property and to private businesses as they do in any public place.

Whether you post a sign or not, businesses never have the right to refuse or turn away customers because of their race, gender, age, nationality or religion. In addition to the Civil Rights Act of 1964, several states have their own civil rights legislation designed to prevent discrimination. The Americans with Disabilities Act also prohibits discrimination in public accommodations, making it illegal to refuse service to individuals who are disabled or handicapped…

..there are some valid reasons for asking customers to leave. Individuals or groups who are causing trouble or being disruptive may be asked to leave, while restaurants or other businesses with a capacity limit can turn away customers to prevent this limit from being exceeded. Businesses can also refuse service to those who come in just before closing time or to those who are not making any purchases during their visit. There are various other examples – the key thing to note is that in each example, the decision to refuse service is not arbitrary or based upon an individual’s specific characteristics. Declining to serve someone has to be reasonable and justifiable. If customers are not properly dressed, you can ask that they leave, but if a person is wearing reasonable religious apparel and you dislike their beliefs, you can’t use that as an excuse to send them on their way. Spring Awakening (musical) From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
“..is a rock musical with music by Duncan Sheik and a book and lyrics by Steven Sater. It is based on the German play Spring Awakening (1891) by Frank Wedekind. In the musical, alternative rock is employed as part of the folk-infused rock score…”

“..We are Totally…. Psyched to see how this show plays out on Broadway, and are excited to share some hidden gems that you might not have known…

Spring Awakening is based on the highly controversial and oft-censored 1891 play by German playwright Frank Wedekind. Spring Awakening was Frank Wedekind’s first play. He had it published at his own expense in 1891, but it was not performed until Wedekind started his own repertory company in 1906. The first production in the United States took place in 1912, but since the play was in German it failed to attract widespread interest. The play was finally performed in English in 1917. The debut performance almost didn’t take place because the New York City Commissioner of Licenses tried to shut it down, claiming that the play was pornographic in nature. Almost immediately, Wedekind was able to secure an injunction from the Supreme Court that allowed the play to go on. Unfortunately, the audience seemed to agree with the Commissioner, and the play closed after a single show…”

Personal Reflections

I thought the cast at the University of Minnesota-Morris theater group did a superb job “performance” wise. They are one very talented group (e.g. singing and acting)!

During one of the scenes when the student was going to tell his dad the “bad” news that he ‘ll be expelled or something. He was seen as a “failure” and “embarassment” to his dad, which he would get physically abused. Unfortunately, he would commit suicide. This brought up my indirect experience in high school when 3 classmates from my class were killed in different ways (one commited suicide too with a gun). This also brought me to one of the scenes from an old school movie called “Dead Poets Society”..

Spring Awakening at ANU Arts Centre is a rock musical about teen angst Ron Cerabona November 6 2016 – 3:18PM esperanceexpress.com.au
“The 2006 musical, Spring Awakening, is set in late 19th-century Germany, but its themes are close to being timeless and universal. Co-director Grant Pegg says, “It’s a show about teenage issues in general. It traverses every teenage issue you could imagine – sexuality, suicide, relationships, rebellion, authority, school, sex, friendship.”

These teenagers are growing up in a deeply religious community in 1891. Melchior (played by Callum Bodman) and Wendla (Kaitlin Nihill) have known each other since childhood but are developing strange new feelings for each other that they don’t know how to explain or handle. Melchior’s anxious friend Moritz (Pip Carroll) is particularly disturbed by the dreams he has been having. And Ernst (Jake Willis) and Hanschen (Lachlan Agett) are developing a relationship that goes beyond friendship…

You haven’t seen the teen musical sensation, but you can still regale your friends with tales of masturbation, sadism and body-popping – all stolen from the critics
‘..Now unfold the plot: the musical is set in the late 19th century and concerns itself with troubled puberty confronting strict bourgeois morality, you say, paraphrasing the Guardian. “We follow the linked fates of three teenage school pupils. Moritz is so tormented by sex and harried by exam pressure that he is driven to suicide. His rebellious friend, Melchior, unwarily impregnates a 14-year-old girl. Wendla, the innocent in question, dies in the course of an illegal abortion. Other pupils find release in masturbation and same-sex friendships but the show, like the play, remains an attack on a repressive, puritan culture.” Pause. Regain your enthusiasm. Now you know: Who are “mercenaries”?

-History

How Mercenaries Work science.howstuffworks.com
“..The reasons for using mercenaries have changed over the years. In ancient times, mercenaries were a necessity. Standing armies weren’t available, so rulers had to look elsewhere for soldiers after they exhausted their supply of able-bodied citizens available to fight.

For example, the Hundred Years’ War, which lasted from 1337 to 1453, took its toll on the English and French armies. As the prolonged war grew in dimension, so did the number of mercenaries. Edward of Woodstock, also known as the Black Prince, made good use of mercenaries to carry out a method of warfare known as chevauchée. In chevauchée, small groups of mounted soldiers stormed through a territory, burning and pillaging everything in their path. Chevauchée was very effective, and it made being a mercenary a lucrative profession. Soldiers from all over Europe flocked to France to get their share of the loot, which included both salary and whatever they could plunder.

As a result of the conflict in Africa and the unsavory mercenary activity it inspired, the international community strongly discouraged the use of mercenaries. Countries continued to hire foreign soldiers, but they exerted much more control. They also limited the activities of these soldiers to supporting roles only, freeing the regular army to focus on dangerous or mission-critical activities. Today, several companies exist to provide this new breed of mercenary. They are known as private military companies, or PMCs. On the next page, we’ll examine PMCs more closely. ..”

…3. Contracting may be the new American Way of War
“Why did the US, with the world’s most powerful military, need contractors? Because the All Volunteer Force could not recruit enough American’s to sustain two “long wars.” In 2002, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld said the Iraq War would last: “Five days or five weeks or five months, but it certainly isn’t going to last any longer than that.” When it didn’t, policy makers faced ugly choices. They could withdraw and cede the fight to al Qaeda. They could have a Vietnam-like draft to fill the ranks. Or they could contract out the difference. They went with contractors. In Iraq, 50% of the US force was contracted. In Afghanistan it was 70%. In WW2, it was only 10%. Is contracting America’s new way of war? It’s a fair question.
4. Most contractors who fight for America aren’t even American
When I was in the industry, I worked alongside people from all over the world: Mexico, Ghana, Australia, Canada and so forth. Private military companies are just like any other multinational corporation: they recruit globally. They also pay people different wages. For example, a specialforces soldier from Honduras with similar training and background as me would get paid much less. Just like shirt sweat shops around the world, the private military industry looks for cheap labor….

‘White Helmets’ — pawns for U.S. militarism By Sara Flounders posted on September 21, 2016 workers.org
“..NBC News praised the featured group as “Angels on the Front Line.” The Washington Post, New York Times and Wall Street Journal sang the movie’s praises and White Helmets’ “selfless, humanitarian role.”

The White Helmets defines itself as unpaid, unarmed first responders in Syria, claims 3,000 members and alleges it is a Syrian Civil Defense group. It claims to have saved 40,000, even 60,000 lives in Syria, by rescuing survivors from bombsites.

Most claims about the White Helmets are unverified self-promotion on social media. Interviews with and media coverage of the grouping show desperate appeals for an increase in U.S./NATO military action in Syria — not peace and reconciliation. New York Times columnist Nicholas Kristof and other journalists have quoted its calls for a no-fly zone as a “humanitarian” option.

The much-hyped White Helmets is not a Syrian organization, nor was it created by Syrians, nor is it educational. It is a U.S.-British creation. Former British Army officer James Le Mesurier, self-described as a British “security” specialist, founded it. He previously worked for Blackwater, the mercenary organization universally condemned for its murderous brutality in Iraq….

The White Helmets has never functioned as a neutral force. While attacking the Syrian government and calling for more U.S., British and NATO bombing, the group functions exclusively in Syrian areas held by the Nusra Front, a terrorist organization linked to al-Qaida. This well-funded group operates on the ground with U.S.-, British-, Israeli- and Saudi-funded militias committed to destroying Syria’s government.

While claiming to be “unarmed,” the White Helmets appears in videos with weapons, surrounded by armed militias.”

This symbolic installation was taken down in 1986 during the Reagan presidency. In 1991, Unity College, an environmentally-minded centre of learning in Maine acquired the panels and later installed them on their cafeteria roof.

Could Solar Panels Replace Concrete Or Asphalt Roads? Quora , Contributor Jun 5, 2014 @ 11:54 AM forbes.com
“Yes, they could. The basic engineering of Solar Roadways seems robust and fairly well thought through. Could they do so economically? It’s very difficult to see how…

Solar Roadways make them a lot more expensive — 10 to 40 times more expensive depending on assumptions — and in theory create the ability to avoid some costs and make some other costs more viable, but a lot of the additional value seems pretty flimsy. They will be unable to overcome this massive cost increase through generating electricity.

For example, they want to replace painting road markings — which would degrade the light hitting the solar panels — with LED road markings. Well, this just adds a lot of cost and heat, won’t necessarily be particularly visible during the day and will put LEDs and their wiring between the panels and the sunlight too. Ditto magically moving lane markings allowing shifts in traffic patterns will likewise be an expensive technical solution to some paint which needs to be restored every year or two and maybe some overhead signage…

So what’s the problem with snowplows? Well, they have heavy metal blades that scrape across the road. And the road in this case is a bumpy glass surface, because a slick surface would become a sheet of ice in the rain, so it needs to be textured. And the snowplow blade is going to be blasting across these bumps at 30-50 miles per hour scraping them off and shattering them. Oh, and leaving a lot of snow packed into the cracks between the bumps, degrading the effectiveness yet again. Salt, gravel and other substances will likely be required as well, which is fun when you have a bunch of glass panels with cracks between them allowing salty water in among the solar panels, LEDs, wires and heating coils…”

“..The legislators’ push to punish renewable energy use “clearly picks a preferred energy source regardless of cost. This may not only cost ratepayers and consumers in Wyoming, but it could harm our potential to attract new industry,” Godby said.

The bill would penalize utility-scale solar and wind because those producers are less able to respond quickly to fluctuating demand for power. Natural gas power plants can fire up quickly when millions of people turn on their air conditioners during a heat wave.

But the wind does not blow all the time and solar energy installations cannot produce electricity at night, making them less versatile than fossil fuels that can be burned whenever electricity is needed…”

Renewable energy has been both praised and derided as an alternative source of power over the past two decades. To its detractors it is inefficient, unreliable and economically unsound. To its advocates it is free, clean, and unlimited in its potential. Bringing a different treat in Halloween

For the 4th year in a row, I put Bible verses in the the treats I handed out during Halloween this year. I started doing this after giving some thought and prayer about what I can do to be a “light” during this uneventful day as a Christian. I grew-up “ignorantly” knowing the truth behind this “pagan day” until I found the Truth. I didn’t want to just stay in my house with the lights off until all the trick or treaters finished going house to house. I found this idea via online when I was “searching” online what Christians can do during this time of the year.

First I started with candy 4 years ago (would invite friends over for a movie, food, and fellowship or get-together), but switched to juice bottles the last two years (Last year, a friend from another country loved handing out these juice bottles to the visitors at the door. It was a first time experience doing an activity like this as he never did this back at home.). As a “victim” (cavaties that led to high dental bills) of sweets growing-up, I wanted to make sure the kids-youth that came to my door won’t go through the same challenges I did. I don’t want to be responsible in contributing to their health problems (e.g. diabetes, obesity, or any future addictions), like I almost similarly faced when I got older.

This year was probably the biggest number of visitors at my door as I had a record number of 22! The weather wasn’t as warm as last year, but it was probably warmer than it has been for this past week/season. I had a lot of positive feedback of the juice bottles I gave since it was different from the popular sweet candies.

Most of the kids-teens that came by were people I knew from community relationships (e.g. church, work, etc…). The parents would comment later that their kid(s) appreciated the alternative juice treats instead of candy as I explained to them my reason for an alternative health choice.

One group (teenagers) that I won’t forget from this memorable year was when one of them asked me if I was religious after he read the Bible verse taped in the juice bottle I handed to him. I was first intrigued that he recognized it as a Bible verse and then I told him that “religious” is not my definition. Instead I told him it was more that it’s a personal relationship with Jesus. His friend that was close by then boldly stated, “I’m that too”! I smiled and then saw a parent with a kid behind them, which I then replied “awesome” (slowly grew quieter and held back from “preaching”..lol).

Other notes about this year’s event was a “friend” from another local church remembered me giving these Bible verse treats the past two years. She asked if I can print these for her as she wanted to do something similar this year. I have yet to ask her how it went, but I will try to update this when I do talk to her. Also, in our community (Morris, Minnesota), the local schools (college and high school) did a community fundraiser this same evening. The college (as has in the past) collected cans for the local food shelf, which I did my part in donating when a college student came over.

UMM students to Trick or Can for food shelf

“MORRIS — Students from the University of Minnesota, Morris will be going door-to-door in the Morris community collecting donations for the Stevens County Food Shelf on Thursday, Oct. 31, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Donations can also be left outside if they are clearly marked for Trick or Can.

While the Stevens County Food Shelf is requesting donations of money or personal hygiene products (soap, shampoo, conditioner, deodorant), nonperishable food items are also welcome. These include canned goods as well as jello/pudding mixes, crackers, popcorn, coffee, and cocoa. Please make checks payable to Stevens County Food Shelf.

Since 1991, the Stevens County Food Shelf has been a reliable source of help to the Morris community, providing hygiene products and nonperishable food items to low-income households in the area. The Food Shelf serves an average of 100 households, or 300 individuals, each month.

For more information, contact the University of Minnesota, Morris Office of Community Engagement at 320-589-6276.

Unfortunately, no high school student came over, which they were asking for donations to a UNICEF program.

Please keep the kidsyouth in your thoughts and prayers (e.g. Lord’s protection from daily temptations, dangers-bullying, etc..) throughout the rest of the school season.

I would love to hear any feedback on what do you think about this as I’m looking forward to what I can do “better” next year. Till then, may you keep seeking Him throughout the season(s).

He points to 1 Corinthians 8, where Paul discusses whether it’s OK to eat meat that was sacrificed to idols. Ultimately, he says there’s nothing wrong with it, though he adds, “Be careful, however, that the exercise of your rights does not become a stumbling block to the weak.”..”

HISTORY OF HALLOWEEN

When looking at the world today, it’s very obvious to understand why the Father commanded us not to be of this world. When we look at many of the practices, holidays, and rituals that we participate in, the reasons we should not be of this world become so clear. The celebration of Halloween is something that truly emphasizes this point. There has always been an agenda to blur the lines between good and evil. Also an agenda to initiate the world into the occult and to accept the things of Lucifer. After you understand more about Halloween you will clearly see that this agenda is truly in the end stages. Don’t celebrate this wicked day!
