Deep Thought: Why is the Bible so “contradictory” or is it?

Does the Bible Contradict Itself?, October 3rd, 2012 By Robert A. Ratcliff ministrymatters.com
“..So, does the Bible contradict itself? In one sense, of course it does. The Bible is not one book after all, it is a library of books gathered, compiled, composed, and edited over the course of centuries. That one book or passage should disagree, even substantially, with another is only inevitable.

But in another sense we can say that when the Bible is contradicting itself it is at the same time conversing with itself. One text speaks to another, challenging it, probing it, shedding new light upon it. The internal conversation going on in Scripture creates some of the Bible’s most important messages. If the Bible speaks the word of God (and I believe it does), then it is above all a dynamic word. The truth of Scripture is not static; it is changing, it is growing, and where there is growth there is usually friction….”

Does the Bible Contradict Itself?- How to think about differences in scripture By Preston Sprinkle April 20, 2015 relevantmagazine.com
“Most people answer this question either with an adamant “Yes!” or passionate “No!” Too often, though, both sides fail to understand or represent the other side. Not everyone who says that the Bible contains contradictions is an angry, arrogant, card-carrying atheist. And not everyone who believes there aren’t any contradictions is a backwoods, unscientific, raging fundamentalist with his head in the sand…

What “Contradictions” Look Like

First, it’s important to distinguish between contradiction and difference. Just because two passages are different, doesn’t mean they contradict each other. For example, Matthew 27:5 says that Judas hung himself, while Acts 1:18 says that he fell to the ground and burst wide open. These are two different accounts of Judas’ death, but they are not formal contradictions. A contradiction would be one passages saying, “Judas hung himself and died” and another passage saying, “Judas didn’t hang himself; rather, he threw himself from cliff and splattered on the ground.”..

Answering for the Bible

…For instance, for the longest time critics laughed at the blatant error in Daniel 5:1, where Belshazzar is named king of Babylon. Every historian knew that Nabonidus was the king at this time, not some guy named Balshazzar. That is, until archaeologists discovered an inscription known as the “Persian Verse Account of Nabonidus,” where it says that Nabonidus went away for a long journey during this time and left the kingdom in the hands of—you guessed it—his son Balshazzar. Contradiction solved…

Violent?

4 Responses to the Problem of Violence in the Bible February 6, 2015 by John Dickson
….4. You must read the narrative through the lens of the New Testament.
“This is the most important response to the problem of Old Testament violence. Christians are forbidden to read Joshua as a justification for modern war, for Jesus said to love your enemies (Matthew 5:44) and turn the other cheek (Matthew 5:39). That doesn’t mean wars are never justified — they can be, on other grounds. My point here is that we cannot achieve God’s kingdom ends through violence.
This is not picking and choosing which bits of the Bible we like and don’t like. It is how Christians have always read the Bible as two testaments. Like a ‘prism’ that causes light to refract into the full spectrum, the life, teaching, death, and resurrection of Jesus transforms many things — including circumcision, food laws, and holy war. For Christians, the only holy war the Bible endorses is the spiritual one Paul mentions in Ephesians 6: the fight against error and sin….”

“The underlying theme behind our ‘Glimpses of Truth’ series is the idea that before we had the full revelation of God in Jesus, people only caught glimpses of him. He showed himself, but like the sun on a cloudy day, people’s view was obscured by their culture, so what they saw was not the full revelation but one marred by their own expectations and fallenness.

But despite this, there were still a few instances in the Old Testament where we can see glimpses of the Christ-like God that we know..”

Why does God kill innocent people in the Old Testament but commands us not to do so? In doing so, does this not make God both a murderer and a hypocrite? Why does God kills and order His people to kill entire nations including babies and seemingly innocent people? Why does God kill is one of the questions that atheists will use to suggest that God is not good. This video gives 6 reasons why God kills innocent people in the Old Testament.

Islam Perspective

Verses of Violence: Comparing the Bible and Quran
9:30AM EST 12/16/2015 Michael Brown charismanews.com
“…How can anyone compare the two?

Jesus is called the Lamb of God in numerous texts, speaking of His sacrificial death on the cross, and He is worshipped by Christians as the Lamb who was slain. Do Muslims commonly think of Muhammad in those terms?

The issue here is not whether it’s appropriate for Christians to defend themselves against terrorist attacks or whether Christians should serve in the military.

The issue is that the early Christians were killed for their faith rather than killing others for their faith. The early Muslims did, in fact, kill others for their faith, and many have continued to do so through the centuries.

So, when a Christian is killed by a radical Muslim for refusing to deny his faith, both the Christian and the Muslim can point to their leaders—Jesus and Muhammad—and say, “I am following the example of my leader,” one by being killed for his faith, the other by killing for his faith.

I’m quite aware of ugly aspects of Church history, including the violence of the Crusades (in particular, against European Jews who were not part of the military conflict between Christians and Muslims), but examples such as this prove the larger point: They are horrific exceptions to the rule and they are without New Testament support…”

Flying Hijacked Planes into Glass Houses TheReligionofPeace.com Presents

“…Strategic omission is just one way that Muslim apologists manipulate Biblical passages. (In this case, The American Muslim editors did not even include an ellipsis in place of the omission, since it may have raised the suspicions of the reader).

The next passage that The American Muslim claims promotes violence is from the apostle Paul, who writes:

“Hymenaeus and Alexander I have delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.” (1Timothy 1:20)

The violence in the passage is not exactly evident from this reading. In the context of the previous verse, these two men “suffered shipwreck with regard to the faith,” but there is nothing to indicate that they were physically harmed as a result. It was the practice of the early Church to excommunicate apostates, and there is every reason to believe that this was the “fate” of these two individuals. They were expelled from the Church by Paul. The Christian Church does not advocate killing apostates.

Contrast this with the words of Muhammad:

“Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him.'” (Bukhari 84:57)

Not much ambiguity there. Abu Bakr, the first caliph and several other Muslims testified that Muhammad had indeed put Muslim apostates to death. For this reason, the practice is coded in Islamic law.

The next passage that is supposed to inspire Christians to violence is the recounting of David’s victory against the Philistines:

Sexist?

Is the Bible sexist against women? from comereason.org
“Hi Paul,

I do not believe God is “against” women. The passage to which you are referring is 1 Timothy 2:12, “But I do not allow a woman to teach or exercise authority over a man, but to remain quiet.” On its face, this may seem a sexist position. Why can’t women teach? Aren’t they as knowledgeable as men? Aren’t they as smart? This line of thinking takes the passage out of context, though.

The above passage (along with several others) is meant to set down the structure of leadership in the church as an organized body. Before I go into detail on this, let me first explain what it is not saying. Warren Wiersbe gives us a great account of how the New Testament approaches women.(1)

The Bible does not say that a woman cannot teach a man about Christ. Priscilla, along with her husband, taught Apollos the way of God more accurately (Acts 18:26).
It does not say women cannot exercise spiritual gifts. The four daughters of Philli…”

The Intra-Religion Conflicts Within Muslims

Is ISIS, the Islamic State, trying to penetrate the U.S. with the refugee influx? Are Muslims radicalized on U.S. soil? The Islamic State is no mere collection of psychopaths. It is a religious group with carefully considered beliefs, among them that it is a key agent of the coming apocalypse. Here’s what that means for its strategy—and for how to stop it.
“…To take one example: In September, Sheikh Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, the Islamic State’s chief spokesman, called on Muslims in Western countries such as France and Canada to find an infidel and “smash his head with a rock,” poison him, run him over with a car, or “destroy his crops.” To Western ears, the biblical-sounding punishments—the stoning and crop destruction—juxtaposed strangely with his more modern-sounding call to vehicular homicide. (As if to show that he could terrorize by imagery alone, Adnani also referred to Secretary of State John Kerry as an “uncircumcised geezer.”)..

Many mainstream Muslim organizations have gone so far as to say the Islamic State is, in fact, un-Islamic. It is, of course, reassuring to know that the vast majority of Muslims have zero interest in replacing Hollywood movies with public executions as evening entertainment. But Muslims who call the Islamic State un-Islamic are typically, as the Princeton scholar Bernard Haykel, the leading expert on the group’s theology, told me, “embarrassed and politically correct, with a cotton-candy view of their own religion” that neglects “what their religion has historically and legally required.” Many denials of the Islamic State’s religious nature, he said, are rooted in an “interfaith-Christian-nonsense tradition.”

All Muslims acknowledge that Muhammad’s earliest conquests were not tidy affairs, and that the laws of war passed down in the Koran and in the narrations of the Prophet’s rule were calibrated to fit a turbulent and violent time. In Haykel’s estimation, the fighters of the Islamic State are authentic throwbacks to early Islam and are faithfully reproducing its norms of war. This behavior includes a number of practices that modern Muslims tend to prefer not to acknowledge as integral to their sacred texts. “Slavery, crucifixion, and beheadings are not something that freakish [jihadists] are cherry-picking from the medieval tradition,” Haykel said. Islamic State fighters “are smack in the middle of the medieval tradition and are bringing it wholesale into the present day.”

..The Koran specifies crucifixion as one of the only punishments permitted for enemies of Islam. The tax on Christians finds clear endorsement in the Surah Al-Tawba, the Koran’s ninth chapter, which instructs Muslims to fight Christians and Jews “until they pay the jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” The Prophet, whom all Muslims consider exemplary, imposed these rules and owned slaves.

..In London, a week before my meal with Cerantonio, I met with three ex-members of a banned Islamist group called Al Muhajiroun (The Emigrants): Anjem Choudary, Abu Baraa, and Abdul Muhid. They all expressed desire to emigrate to the Islamic State, as many of their colleagues already had, but the authorities had confiscated their passports. Like Cerantonio, they regarded the caliphate as the only righteous government on Earth, though none would confess having pledged allegiance. Their principal goal in meeting me was to explain what the Islamic State stands for, and how its policies reflect God’s law…

IV. The Fight

In London, Choudary and his students provided detailed descriptions of how the Islamic State must conduct its foreign policy, now that it is a caliphate. It has already taken up what Islamic law refers to as “offensive jihad,” the forcible expansion into countries that are ruled by non-Muslims. “Hitherto, we were just defending ourselves,” Choudary said; without a caliphate, offensive jihad is an inapplicable concept. But the waging of war to expand the caliphate is an essential duty of the caliph.

Non-muslims cannot tell Muslims how to practice their religion properly. But Muslims have long since begun this debate within their own ranks. “You have to have standards,” Anjem Choudary told me. “Somebody could claim to be a Muslim, but if he believes in homosexuality or drinking alcohol, then he is not a Muslim. There is no such thing as a nonpracticing vegetarian.”..

Instead, Pocius—like a majority of Salafis—believes that Muslims should remove themselves from politics. These quietist Salafis, as they are known, agree with the Islamic State that God’s law is the only law, and they eschew practices like voting and the creation of political parties. But they interpret the Koran’s hatred of discord and chaos as requiring them to fall into line with just about any leader, including some manifestly sinful ones. “The Prophet said: as long as the ruler does not enter into clear kufr [disbelief], give him general obedience,” Pocius told me, and the classic “books of creed” all warn against causing social upheaval. Quietist Salafis are strictly forbidden from dividing Muslims from one another—for example, by mass excommunication. Living without baya’a, Pocius said, does indeed make one ignorant, or benighted. But baya’a need not mean direct allegiance to a caliph, and certainly not to Abu Bakr al‑Baghdadi. It can mean, more broadly, allegiance to a religious social contract and commitment to a society of Muslims, whether ruled by a caliph or not.

Quietist Salafis believe that Muslims should direct their energies toward perfecting their personal life, including prayer, ritual, and hygiene.

..Western officials would probably do best to refrain from weighing in on matters of Islamic theological debate altogether. Barack Obama himself drifted into takfiri waters when he claimed that the Islamic State was “not Islamic”—the irony being that he, as the non-Muslim son of a Muslim, may himself be classified as an apostate, and yet is now practicing takfir against Muslims. Non-Muslims’ practicing takfir elicits chuckles from jihadists (“Like a pig covered in feces giving hygiene advice to others,” one tweeted).

“We are facing a third world war against humanity and this is what brings us all together,” he told a press conference.

“This is a war, as I’ve said repeatedly, within Islam,” he said, stressing the high number of Muslim victims of the Islamic State (IS) group.

Abdullah said groups such as IS “expose themselves daily as savage outlaws of religion, devoid of humanity, respecting no laws and no boundaries”.

“So therefore we must act fast and holistically to tackle and respond to the interconnected threats whether it is in this region, Africa, Asia or in Europe,” he said.

In France’s worst-ever terror attacks, IS gunmen and suicide bombers murdered 129 people in coordinated onslaughts in Paris on Friday night.

Muslim-majority Jordan is, like France, a member of the US-led coalition battling the group, which controls swathes of land in its neighbours Iraq and Syria.

On Sunday, Abdullah said fighting extremism was “our fight as Muslims against those who aim to turn our societies and future generations towards fanaticism and extremism”.

Jordan says it has taken in 1.4 million Syrians fleeing the war there since it broke out in 2011, but the UNHCR puts the figure at 600,000.

At least 250,000 people have died in more than four years of conflict in Syria.

Hypocrites?: Religion-Christianity

dc Talk documentary – “The Greatest Single Cause”

I became a Christian back in the spring of my Sophomore year of college. It was the beginning of my walk (faith) with God (“Heavenly Father”). People around me might’ve seen that and might’ve NOT seen that I’m a Christian based on my lifestyle. For example, there has been times when I swore and the people around me might not even think I’m a Christian. Then there are times when I was “doing” good deeds (e.g. giving food to the poor) and thing I’m a Christian. What it boils down to is not what others “think about” (do NOT judge) me, but what God (Heavenly Father) “thinks about” (I’m a child of Him when I accept Him as my Savior) me. No, no one is perfect (sinless), but instead of “judging” someone-we can pray for them as “some/all” of us are growing in our faith.

Pope Francis’ opinion: better to be an atheist than a hypocrite By Marshall Connolly (CALIFORNIA NETWORK)
2/24/2017 (2 days ago)
Catholic Online (www.catholic.org)
Pope Francis denounced hypocritical Catholics who live what he called a “double life,” and said it would be better to be an atheist.
“LOS ANGELES, CA (California Network) — During daily Mass on Thursday, Pope Francis made his opinion clear, that he thinks it is better to be an atheist than a hypocritical Catholic.

Pope Francis specifically referred to Catholics who laundered money or refused to pay fair wages to employees. However, many Catholics do live double lives of all kinds, attending Mass on Sundays while practicing contradictory habits. Such people do damage to themselves because they sin, and they harm the Church because they are a poor reflection of it. Worse, they may inspire others to sin as well.

Pope Francis’ homily was inspired by the Gospel in which Jesus warned against people who “causes one of these little ones to sin.”

“Cut off your hand…pluck your eye out,” Pope Francis said. “Scandal is to say one thing and doing another; it’s double life.”

He warned about living a life that is not Christian adding, “on this, the Lord is very severe.”

What then of atheists?

Pope Francis’ remarks suggest his opinion is that it is better to be a “good atheist,” than a bad Christian. A good atheist could be a person who still lives in accord with the moral teaching of the Catholic Church, even if unwittingly, and despite their ignorance of God….”

“..
A Ku Klux Klan leader in Florida has suggested that its members might be holding respected and prominent positions throughout local communities across the U.S. A grand dragon who oversees a chapter of the Loyal White Knights of the KKK in central Florida said they currently have “police officers, paramedics and judges” in their local roster of more than 1,000.

“They’re everywhere. What you’ve seen is just the tip of the iceberg right now,” said the man, who was interviewed by WFTV on the condition that his voice was altered and face covered by a Klan robe. “We are just proud to be white.”

The KKK leader denied that the organization was a hate group, although he repeatedly used the N-word to describe black people throughout the interview. A separate Klan member who was interviewed and only identified as “Exalted Cyclops” said he thought it was important to “preserve” the white race. “You start looking at numbers, start looking at census and you realize whites are the minority,” he declared.

Although the KKK had more than two million members back in the 1920s, the current roster is reportedly somewhere between 5,000-8,000. They have taken on an extensive recruiting process in recent months by leaving flyers on the lawns of local communities in the middle of the night. Although the content is highly offensive, it isn’t illegal and falls under First Amendment protection…”
Invisible Robes of Injustice: It’s Hard to Fight What You Can’t See 12 March 2014 Written by Jeffrey L. Boney forwardtimesonline.com
“…These are the words written by former Senator Robert C. Byrd in a letter, where he declared that he would never fight in the armed forces with a Negro by his side. This same man, with those racist thoughts, was eventually elected to Congress, and specifically the U.S. Senate, with the full responsibility and power to introduce bills and vote on legislation that would significantly impact Black people in this country for years.

One historical truth that is important for people to remember is that African Americans have always had to deal with the dark forces of racism, not only by hate groups, but by those with the power to disenfranchise, discriminate and even murder. One of those dark forces, that was created to intimidate and keep Black people in a state of fear and bondage, still has a presence in the U.S., and while many members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK) aren’t as easily identifiable as they once were, they are still having an impact by being clothed with “invisible robes of injustice.”

..While many KKK members still wear the traditional robes and costumes, many of them do not. There are many elected officials, police, community leaders and business people who wear “invisible robes of injustice” every day; hiding their true identity and their true beliefs. Sadly, behind closed doors, and in the dark of night, many of them are plotting and planning to execute strategies that are intended to disenfranchise and harm Black people….

..When you look at today’s Congress, elected officials, the prison system, judicial system, the educational system, law enforcement policies and other issues affecting Blacks, there are many glaring examples of how Blacks have been disenfranchised based on the actions and decisions of people with the authority or with the capacity to do so. Many of those actions and decisions are reminiscent to the way the Klan operated and executed their level of terror on Black people in this country without wanting to be identified; they have become unofficial members without the robes and sheets.

What About Hypocrites in the Church? By Robert Velarde focusonthefamily.com

“”Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye? How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye? You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”

–Matthew 7:3-5 (NIV)

“With these witty but also biting words, Jesus causes his listeners – then and today – to carefully examine their own lives. Are we going about accusing others of minor shortcomings when, in fact, we ourselves are ignoring our own behavior? If so, we are hypocrites. Once our hypocrisy is removed, then we are in a position to help others.

Unfortunately, one obstacle to the acceptance of Christianity that is often raised is provided by Christians themselves. Phrased in many ways, the core of the objection is, “If Christianity is true, why are there hypocrites in the church?” In other words, if Christianity is really supposed to change people, then why do some who profess to believe in Jesus set such bad examples? This article will answer the “hypocrisy objection” to Christianity. But first, let’s explore the definition of hypocrisy in general, as well as in a biblical sense…”
