Syrian Refugees Find A Home In The U.S.

As the Syrian crisis enters its fifth year, an estimated 4 million people have fled the country due to fighting. The United States has taken in 584 refugees as of March 11, 2015. AJ+’s Dena Takruri talked to Um and Abu Gasem in Sacramento, California, about their new lives in the U.S. and the memories they left behind in Syria.

“After 9/11 of course, the whole nation pretty much stopped taking refugees for a time,” says the director of the Seattle office of the International Rescue Committee. “In 1975 a bunch of the states refused to take in any of the Vietnamese fleeing that war…

It takes a minimum of two years living in a refugee camp, and then you’re vetted, interviewed and fingerprinted by the FBI, Homeland Security and the State Department,” he said. “It’s an incredibly arduous process to get here. “..What’s the process for them to come to the United States?

It can take 18 months or longer for a refugee to be accepted for resettlement in the United States. Most refugees are referred to the U.S. government by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. Their cases are prioritized based on need.

The refugees go through a lengthy process, involving in-person interviews with officials from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services agency, health screenings and security background checks. State Department officials say the security checks are extensive and involve many U.S. agencies, but the precise details of how the process works are classified.

Once the refugees are accepted, their flights to the United States are initially paid for by the U.S. government. Refugees sign a promissory note to repay the government.

Whether the United States should accept Syrian refugees has become an urgent debate in the days since the terror attacks in Paris. At least 30 governors have said they’re against letting refugees into their states because of fears that terrorists could hide among those seeking political asylum.

Civilians are fleeing Syria — where more than 200,000 people have been killed in the conflict — by the thousands. Some have called their migration the largest humanitarian crisis since World War II.

The unrest began in 2011 with protests against President Bashar al-Assad, in the wake of the pro-democracy Arab Spring. Assad’s regime responded with violence, and the country spiraled into a civil war. But it isn’t just pro-Assad vs. anti-Assad groups. There are several sects fighting one another, one of which is the terrorist group the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria, also known as ISIS or ISIL.

Some have questioned whether one of the ISIS terrorists who participated in the Nov. 13 Paris attacks was a Syrian refugee who resettled in Europe. That fact remains unconfirmed; authorities are still investigating. The six Paris attackers identified so far were French and Belgian nationals. Nonetheless, many American politicians are concerned that allowing Syrian refugees to settle in the United States would leave the country vulnerable.

There are a lot of questions about Syrian refugees coming to the United States. Here are some answers…”

Something Christian Millennials “Don’t get” lifeinprogressministries.org

“..These themes are all over the Bible. “Be strong and courageous,” God told Joshua. “Perhaps you are here for such a time as this,” Esther’s uncle said. “Do not fear those who can kill the body,” Jesus said. Jesus also told a story that would be, on the danger scale, the equivalent of a Native American carrying a bloodied and beaten white man into an Old West town saloon for help in the pioneer days. (The Good Samaritan)

And the stories didn’t just include Bible stories. Just about every evangelical (especially Baptists) know and praise the Jim Elliots of the world and their wives. If you don’t know, Jim Elliot was a missionary to somewhere in the Amazon. He and several others were killed by the natives. Later, their wives evangelized the same people who killed their husbands!

We were taught to admire people like that. The idea that nothing, and I mean absolutely NOTHING in this world is more important than expanding the Kingdom of God — not even my own life — has been drilled into me since I was a small child. And, you know what? I believe it’s the truth still!

Am I not supposed to actually believe all that stuff? I find myself today witnessing some Christians who seem to want to be as not like Jim Elliot as possible. I do not understand this. This is what I do not “get.”

For years and years and years it has been nearly impossible to get missionaries (even sneakily) into parts of the Middle East. It’s so dangerous, some, assuming they can even get in, are likely to be killed so quickly they can’t do much evangelizing. And now, hundreds of thousands of beaten, hurting, orphaned, widowed (google “pure and undefiled religion) and broken people are trying to come to US.

Is it possible that a small percentage of them want to kill us? — Let me counter that question with another question:

Syrian refugees pose low risk, but no reason to rush process, experts say

By Mark Gollom, CBC News Posted: Nov 18, 2015 5:00 AM ET| Last Updated: Nov 18, 2015 5:00 AM ET cbc.ca

Hasty approach to meet Dec. 31 deadline could be a mistake, say security experts

“..While Trudeau has dismissed such concerns, some security experts suggest that trying to process that many refugees in such short time is not without risk, however slight, and that the prime minister doesn’t need to rush the effort.

“I very much hope that in the end, that they will have removed Dec. 31 as part of the plan and say, ‘We”re going to do it and we’ll get it done when we get it done,'” said Peter Showler, the former head of Canada’s Immigration and Refugee Board.

As for whether Canadians should be concerned about security risks from Syrian refugees, Showler said, “I would say no — until you put in ‘[coming] by the end of the year,’ and then I would say I don’t know.”

The evidence, so far, that refugees pose risks in North America has been scant. A recent article in the Economist points out that of the 745,000 refugees resettled in the U.S. since Sept. 11, only two have been arrested on terrorism-related charges, and those had not planned any kind of attack. Meanwhile, Canada has taken in nearly 265,000 refugees from 2005 to 2014.

However, those refugees underwent a rigorous screening process, one that can take years. Trudeau is hoping to resettle 25,000 refugees in a matter of weeks.

But while we agree with the Guardian that this shift in narrative will have an impact against the future flow of refugees into Europe, an even more acute consequence will from the “Syrian” angle will be to “incept” the idea that the entire Paris massacre was the result of events in Syria (and hence, al Assad is directly and indirectly responsible) thus generating goodwill toward a military operation that include a French ground force. In fact, the wheels are already in motion:..

This is the De-Christianization of Europe. The make up of European populations willchaange in a generation or 2, making Christians virtually a minority in their own regions, exactly as the Hungarian PM warned last week.
History teaches us from the example of Constantinople (today’s Istanbul, Turkey) and the Fall of Byzantium in 1453 when the Greeks came into slavery to the Turks for over 400 years (until about 1864).
This also means the end of religious freedom, if Muslim/Islamic dominance overtakes the Christian European philosophy of life, meaning no more Christianity.

The Islamic State is no mere collection of psychopaths. It is a religious group with carefully considered beliefs, among them that it is a key agent of the coming apocalypse. Here’s what that means for its strategy—and for how to stop it.
“…To take one example: In September, Sheikh Abu Muhammad al-Adnani, the Islamic State’s chief spokesman, called on Muslims in Western countries such as France and Canada to find an infidel and “smash his head with a rock,” poison him, run him over with a car, or “destroy his crops.” To Western ears, the biblical-sounding punishments—the stoning and crop destruction—juxtaposed strangely with his more modern-sounding call to vehicular homicide. (As if to show that he could terrorize by imagery alone, Adnani also referred to Secretary of State John Kerry as an “uncircumcised geezer.”)..

Many mainstream Muslim organizations have gone so far as to say the Islamic State is, in fact, un-Islamic. It is, of course, reassuring to know that the vast majority of Muslims have zero interest in replacing Hollywood movies with public executions as evening entertainment. But Muslims who call the Islamic State un-Islamic are typically, as the Princeton scholar Bernard Haykel, the leading expert on the group’s theology, told me, “embarrassed and politically correct, with a cotton-candy view of their own religion” that neglects “what their religion has historically and legally required.” Many denials of the Islamic State’s religious nature, he said, are rooted in an “interfaith-Christian-nonsense tradition.”

All Muslims acknowledge that Muhammad’s earliest conquests were not tidy affairs, and that the laws of war passed down in the Koran and in the narrations of the Prophet’s rule were calibrated to fit a turbulent and violent time. In Haykel’s estimation, the fighters of the Islamic State are authentic throwbacks to early Islam and are faithfully reproducing its norms of war. This behavior includes a number of practices that modern Muslims tend to prefer not to acknowledge as integral to their sacred texts. “Slavery, crucifixion, and beheadings are not something that freakish [jihadists] are cherry-picking from the medieval tradition,” Haykel said. Islamic State fighters “are smack in the middle of the medieval tradition and are bringing it wholesale into the present day.”

..The Koran specifies crucifixion as one of the only punishments permitted for enemies of Islam. The tax on Christians finds clear endorsement in the Surah Al-Tawba, the Koran’s ninth chapter, which instructs Muslims to fight Christians and Jews “until they pay the jizya with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued.” The Prophet, whom all Muslims consider exemplary, imposed these rules and owned slaves.

..In London, a week before my meal with Cerantonio, I met with three ex-members of a banned Islamist group called Al Muhajiroun (The Emigrants): Anjem Choudary, Abu Baraa, and Abdul Muhid. They all expressed desire to emigrate to the Islamic State, as many of their colleagues already had, but the authorities had confiscated their passports. Like Cerantonio, they regarded the caliphate as the only righteous government on Earth, though none would confess having pledged allegiance. Their principal goal in meeting me was to explain what the Islamic State stands for, and how its policies reflect God’s law…

IV. The Fight

In London, Choudary and his students provided detailed descriptions of how the Islamic State must conduct its foreign policy, now that it is a caliphate. It has already taken up what Islamic law refers to as “offensive jihad,” the forcible expansion into countries that are ruled by non-Muslims. “Hitherto, we were just defending ourselves,” Choudary said; without a caliphate, offensive jihad is an inapplicable concept. But the waging of war to expand the caliphate is an essential duty of the caliph.

Non-muslims cannot tell Muslims how to practice their religion properly. But Muslims have long since begun this debate within their own ranks. “You have to have standards,” Anjem Choudary told me. “Somebody could claim to be a Muslim, but if he believes in homosexuality or drinking alcohol, then he is not a Muslim. There is no such thing as a nonpracticing vegetarian.”..

Instead, Pocius—like a majority of Salafis—believes that Muslims should remove themselves from politics. These quietist Salafis, as they are known, agree with the Islamic State that God’s law is the only law, and they eschew practices like voting and the creation of political parties. But they interpret the Koran’s hatred of discord and chaos as requiring them to fall into line with just about any leader, including some manifestly sinful ones. “The Prophet said: as long as the ruler does not enter into clear kufr [disbelief], give him general obedience,” Pocius told me, and the classic “books of creed” all warn against causing social upheaval. Quietist Salafis are strictly forbidden from dividing Muslims from one another—for example, by mass excommunication. Living without baya’a, Pocius said, does indeed make one ignorant, or benighted. But baya’a need not mean direct allegiance to a caliph, and certainly not to Abu Bakr al‑Baghdadi. It can mean, more broadly, allegiance to a religious social contract and commitment to a society of Muslims, whether ruled by a caliph or not.

Quietist Salafis believe that Muslims should direct their energies toward perfecting their personal life, including prayer, ritual, and hygiene.

..Western officials would probably do best to refrain from weighing in on matters of Islamic theological debate altogether. Barack Obama himself drifted into takfiri waters when he claimed that the Islamic State was “not Islamic”—the irony being that he, as the non-Muslim son of a Muslim, may himself be classified as an apostate, and yet is now practicing takfir against Muslims. Non-Muslims’ practicing takfir elicits chuckles from jihadists (“Like a pig covered in feces giving hygiene advice to others,” one tweeted).

“..During an official visit to Kosovo, Abdullah said both Europe and Islam were under attack from the “scourge” of terrorism that could strike anywhere and at any time.

“We are facing a third world war against humanity and this is what brings us all together,” he told a press conference.

“This is a war, as I’ve said repeatedly, within Islam,” he said, stressing the high number of Muslim victims of the Islamic State (IS) group.

Abdullah said groups such as IS “expose themselves daily as savage outlaws of religion, devoid of humanity, respecting no laws and no boundaries”.

“So therefore we must act fast and holistically to tackle and respond to the interconnected threats whether it is in this region, Africa, Asia or in Europe,” he said.

In France’s worst-ever terror attacks, IS gunmen and suicide bombers murdered 129 people in coordinated onslaughts in Paris on Friday night.

Muslim-majority Jordan is, like France, a member of the US-led coalition battling the group, which controls swathes of land in its neighbours Iraq and Syria.

On Sunday, Abdullah said fighting extremism was “our fight as Muslims against those who aim to turn our societies and future generations towards fanaticism and extremism”.

Jordan says it has taken in 1.4 million Syrians fleeing the war there since it broke out in 2011, but the UNHCR puts the figure at 600,000.

At least 250,000 people have died in more than four years of conflict in Syria.

ISIS: The first terror group to build an Islamic state?

By Tim Lister, CNN

Updated 11:25 PM ET, Thu June 12, 2014 cnn.com
“…What are its origins?

In 2006, al Qaeda in Iraq — under the ruthless leadership of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi — embarked on seemingly arbitrary and brutal treatment of civilians as it tried to ignite a sectarian war against the majority Shia community.

It came close to succeeding, especially after the bombing of the Al-Askariya Mosque, an important Shia shrine in Samarra, which sparked retaliatory attacks.

But the killing of al-Zarqawi by American forces, the vicious treatment of civilians and the emergence of the Sahwa (Awakening) Fronts under moderate Sunni tribal leaders nearly destroyed the group.

Nearly, but not quite.

When U.S. forces left Iraq, they took much of their intelligence-gathering expertise with them.

Iraqi officials began to speak of a “third generation” of al Qaeda in Iraq. ..”
ISIS: A Short History:
The terrorist group’s evolution from fervid fantasy to death cult
Bobby Ghosh Aug 14, 2014 theatlantic.com
“..By 2004, Zarqawi’s campaign of suicide bombings across Iraq had made him a superstar of the international “jihadi” movement, and won the endorsement of bin Laden himself. Zarqawi now joined his group to bin Laden’s, rebranding it al-Qaeda in Iraq, or AQI. (It is also sometimes called al-Qaeda in Mesopotamia, but don’t confuse that with AQIM, which refers to the Algerian franchise, al-Qaeda in the Maghreb.)

Soon, however, Zarqawi’s targeting of civilians created misgivings among the core al-Qaeda leadership. In 2005, bin Laden’s right-hand man, Ayman al-Zawahiri, wrote a letter chiding the Jordanian for his tactics. Zarqawi paid it no heed. Last year Zawahiri likewise took ISIS’s new leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, to task for his excessive ferocity—and was again ignored….

ISI/ISIS: First Iraq, then Syria

By 2011, when the U.S. troop withdrawal was complete, AQI was being run by Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, and had morphed from a largely foreign to a largely Iraqi operation. Baghdadi himself, as his name suggests, is local. The absence of foreigners made it easier for the Sons of Iraq and their kin to ignore previous resentments against the group. There was also another rebranding: AQI was now better known as the Islamic State of Iraq, or ISI.

Baghdadi took Zarqawi’s tactics and supercharged them. The Shiites were still his main targets, but now he sent suicide bombers to attack police and military offices, checkpoints, and recruiting stations. (Civilian targets remained fair game.) ISI’s ranks were swelled by former Sons of Iraq, many of whom had previously been commanders and soldiers in Saddam’s military. This gave Baghdadi’s fighters the air of an army, rather than a rag-tag militant outfit…”

Tawhid later joined the “Revolutionary Military Council in Aleppo and its countryside,” which is led by Col. Abdul Jabbar al-Aqidi. It was a purely organizational council and didn’t have its own forces on the ground. Tawhid also played a key role in forming the Aleppo Sharia Council in an alliance with Jabhat al-Nusra and the Ahrar al-Sham Movement. But Jabhat al-Nusra later withdrew from that council.

Tawhid’s formation is mainly linked with a decision to make opposition gunmen enter Aleppo. Accurate accounts confirm that the decision was at the behest of Turkey directly. According to the accounts, Turkish intelligence coordinated with the head of the Military Security branch (then Mohammed Mefleh) to facilitate the entry of the gunmen to Aleppo and that Tawhid be the first organized armed faction to enter the city via the so-called al-Furqan battle on July 20, 2012.

Syrian Opposition Factions in the Syrian Civil War Cody Roche Documenting the Syrian Revolution [م/د] Aug 10 medium.com
“..The Syrian rebellion began in early March 2011 as a protest movement demanding an end to corruption, political liberalization and economic reforms. Unlike similar uprisings throughout the Arab world, Syria’s government remained cohesive, focused and largely intransigent, launching a bloody crackdown that killed thousands of protesters and other civilians. The deployment of the Syrian Arab Army, in addition to various paramilitaries of significant local variation (generally called “shabiha” by the Opposition) intensified the crackdown, and caused the conflict to militarize. From around April 2011 to Summer 2012, the SAA experienced a massive wave of desertions and defections, losing approximately half its active personnel, as soldiers refused to fire on demonstrators and otherwise suppress their countrymen. These defectors, estimated to number between 30–40k, formed the nucleus of the armed Opposition, which emerged in June 2011 and became organized enough to declare the “Free Syrian Army” in August…”

Why Syria’s Bashar al-Assad is still in power Middle EastNews4 October 2016 aljazeera.com
“…A new clique of business owners began forming under Assad’s neoliberal policies. Benefiting from the regime’s crony capitalism, these families often lived in major cities and held close family or social ties to the Assads.

They concentrated ownership of major telecommunications, energy and construction industries among a sliver of no more than 200 people, according to some estimates. In 2011, the Financial Times estimated that Assad’s cousin, Remi Makhlouf, owned up to 60 percent of the national economy.

Though media narratives often maintain that Assad’s support comes from his Alawite sect, today many of the regime’s core backers reside in this generation of technocrats – some of them Sunnis – who found economic prosperity under his regime.

Beyond this super elite is also a swath of medium-sized business owners and merchants. Many of them had also seen their livelihoods improve under Assad, and had no interest in changing the status quo when the uprising began…”

“…However, little was said about the identity or the ideological leanings of these Libyan rebels. Not surprising, considering the fact that the leader of the Libyan rebels later admitted that his fighters included Al-Qaeda linked jihadists who fought against allied troops in Iraq. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/africaandindianocean/libya/8407047/Libyan-rebel-commander-admits-his-fighters-have-al-Qaeda-links.html

These jihadist militants from Iraq were part of what national security analysts commonly referred to as Al-Qaeda in Iraq. Remember Al-Qaeda in Iraq was ISIS before it was rebranded.

With the assistance of U.S. and NATO intelligence and air support, the Libyan rebels captured Gaddafi and summarily executed him in the street, all the while enthusiastically chanting “Allah Akbar”. For many of those who had bought the official line about how these rebels were freedom fighters aiming to establish a liberal democracy in Libya, this was the beginning of the end of their illusions. Prior to the U.S. and NATO backed intervention, Libya had the highest standard of living of any country in Africa. This according to the U.N.’s Human Development Index rankings for 2010. ..”

ISIS : A CIA Creation to Justify War Abroad and Repression at Home 314
By VC on October 10, 2014 vigilantcitizen.com
“…Ever since the creation of democratic nations – where public opinion somewhat matters – the political class is faced with a dilemma: War is needed to gain power, riches, and control, but the general public has a tendency to be against it. What to do? The answer was found decades ago and is still used successfully today: Create an enemy so terrifying that the masses will beg their government to go to war.

This is why ISIS exists. This is why the beheading videos are so “well-produced” and publicized worldwide through mainstream media. This is why news sources regularly come up with alarmist headlines about ISIS. They are used to serve the best interests of the world elite. The current objectives are: Sway public opinion to favor the invasion of countries in the Middle East, provide a pretext for “coalition” intervention across the world, and manufacture a domestic threat that will be used to take away rights and increase surveillance. In short, ISIS is yet another instance of the age-old tactic of creating a terrifying enemy to scare the masses…”

“Friday the 13th Paris France Massacre” (November 2015)
9 Reasons the Terrorist Attacks in Paris Could Be a False Flag Event
Saturday, November 14, 2015 2:59
“…WOW! In the second video, adding fuel to the fire that Paris might have been a false flag, is the who’s who of the intelligence world that was just in Paris. CIA Director Brennan Met With French Secuity Chief Before Paris Attacks – Report | 13 Nov 2015 | The White House correspondent for French television network Canal+, Laura Haim, reported an interesting tidbit during a live report with MSNBC’s Brian Williams Friday evening. Haim stated that Central Intelligence Agency director, John O. Brennan, recently met with his counterpart, French intelligence (DGSE) director Bernard Bajolet. The French equivalent of MI6 and CIA is the Direction générale de la sécurité extérieure. 4.) Gunmen connected to ISIS, gunmen connected to Syria – Along with the very convenient and immediate statement by an allegedly arrested suspect that he was from ISIS, we also have screams of a shooter that “This is for Syria!” This gives us all the information that we need regarding the motivation of the alleged attackers. They are from ISIS. They hate the French because the French are “attacking” ISIS and because somewhere in France in a very darkened corner, under the sofa, there are freedoms. ISIS hates freedoms. This is quite coincidental considering the fact that a Russian airliner was recently bombed, allegedly by ISIS – at least according to the West.

5.) The timing of the event – Aside from the obvious connotations derived from the attacks occurring on Friday the 13th, the Paris massacre has taken place shortly before a major climate summit that was set to take place in France. The French government was expecting massive protests they alleged could potentially become violent, by activists opposed to globalization and energy austerity. Interestingly enough, France had already planned to impose border controls starting on November 30th in anticipation of the U.N. Conference on Climate Change in Paris “because of the terrorist threat or risk of public disorder.” Needless to say, there will be no massive protest now considering the fact that 2015 France resembles the 1943 version of itself more than anything else.”

Paris Terror Attacks: Blowback or False Flag? France Declares a State of Emergency
By Stephen Lendman
Global Research, November 14, 2015 globalresearch.ca

“…Friday Paris attacks were either blowback for Western wars on Islam or a state-sponsored false flag. Odds strongly favor the latter. Western history of false flags for subsequent planned events suggests it.

On September 20, 2001, George Bush lied to Congress and the public, claiming America was attacked because we are “a beacon of freedom.” The attackers were “evil. This is civilization’s fight.” He suppressed Washington’s direct responsibility for what happened, perhaps complicit with Israel’s Mossad.

The aftermath of 9/11 is clear – endless US-led imperial wars, a phony Global War on Terrorism (GWOT), an assault on fundamental human and civil rights, police state harshness replacing them, an America unfit to live in.

Will France and other European countries become more belligerent and repressive than already in response to Friday’s incident?

Were Washington and perhaps Israel’s dirty hands involved in what happened?

Daesh (ISIS/ISIL/IS) is such an easy target to blame. It’s simple getting most people to believe it unquestionably.

The Big Lie repeated often enough works the same way every time. ISIS is the new “Enemy Number One.” Its creation by Washington and use as proxy foot soldiers is suppressed.

Was Friday’s Paris incident prelude to something similar planned for New York, Washington, and/or other US cities?..”

=>Which claims by ISIS are true and false?

What Does It Mean When ISIS Claims Responsibility For An Attack? May 24, 2017·7:00 AM ET npr.org
“…It’s a simple, frequently recurring phrase: “The Islamic State has claimed responsibility for the attack.” But it raises some questions: Is the claim credible or just an empty assertion, and if it’s true, what does “responsibility” actually entail?..

Joscelyn said he can’t think of an example of an outright false claim by ISIS in the U.S. and western Europe. There are plenty of exaggerations — on death tolls, for instance — and the statements shouldn’t be assumed to be true. (For instance, the ISIS claim for the attack on a concert in Manchester didn’t describe a suicide bomber, and had slightly inflated numbers of the dead and wounded.)…

What does it mean for a claim to be “unconfirmed”?

Needless to say, investigators won’t just take the Islamic State at its word when it claims responsibility. They’ll look for statements by the attacker, communication with ISIS online, evidence that the attacker consumed Islamic State propaganda — “real connective tissue,” Joscelyn said.

It can take weeks to get sense of ISIS’ involvement, and months for the full picture of what happened to be uncovered by authorities. That work is necessary not just to confirm an ISIS link, but to determine what kind of link it is.

That’s why early reporting will say that ISIS “claimed responsibility,” but stories published later might note that the group either “carried out” or “inspired” an attack.

Trump wrongly labels Manila shooting a terror attack (philstar.com) | Updated June 2, 2017 – 10:05am philstar.com
“…MANILA, Philippines — US President Donald Trump incorrectly and prematurely labeled the attack on a hotel and casino complex in Manila as an act of terror.

“It is really very sad as to what’s going on throughout the world with terror,” Trump said at the White House before announcing that the US was leaving the Paris climate accord. “Our thoughts and our prayers and with all of those affected.”

The Philippine National Police said that there was no indication of terrorism and suggested that the motive could have been robbery.

According to the police, the English-speaking suspect was found dead with his rifle on the fifth floor of the Resorts World Manila complex. The gunman apparently killed himself.

The suspect took P113 million worth of gambling chips which were found in a bag he was carrying.

ISIS reveal identity of their ‘lone wolf’ gunman in Manila who killed 36 after police insisted he was just a ‘white gambler’ with a vendetta against casino By Rachel Burford and Julian Robinson for MailOnline

Published: 08:35 EDT, 2 June 2017 | Updated: 14:18 EDT, 2 June 2017 .dailymail.co.uk

“…ISIS fanatics have again claimed responsibility for an attack on a Manila casino that left dozens dead – despite police declaring almost immediately that it was a robbery gone wrong.

At least 36 people were killed last night after a ‘white, English-speaking’ masked gunman attacked a casino in Manila, stole £1.7million ($2.3million) worth of betting chips and set fire to tables before he ‘burned himself to death’.

It is understood many of the victims were women who suffocated due to smoke inhalation as crowds battled to get to the exits.

The Philippines is battling ISIS and the terror group claimed responsibility early on for the attack – but national police were quick to insist that the deadly raid was a robbery gone wrong.

However, ISIS has today insisted for a second time that the attack was carried out by one of its jihadists named Abul-Khayr al-Arkhabili.

This incident comes on the heels of the Turkish Air Force shooting down a Russian plane engaged in operations against the Islamic State. Ten days ago, Turkey invaded Iraq briefly. It sent its troops to within a few hundred miles of where the phone was recovered. Turkish artillery has also rained shells down on the Kurdish community of Kobane….”
